Energy Savings of Simultaneous Heating and Cooling System According to Indoor Set Temperature Changes in the Comfort Range
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: energy savings, indoor set temperature, load balancing, simultaneous heating and cooling, thermal comfort
This study was conducted to derive the amount of energy savings when applying the method of making the load similar by changing the set temperature of the room in the building to which the simultaneous heating and cooling (SHC) system is applied. Energy savings were derived through theoretical analysis and comparisons through static simulations were performed to verify the proposed method. As a result, the energy savings are proportional to the energy limit that can be additionally input to the SHC and is proportional to the ratio of the coefficient of performance (COP) difference between the SHC and auxiliary heat source and the auxiliary heat source COP. That is, to increase the amount of energy savings, the maximum possible energy should be input for the SHC, or the SHC COP must be greater than the auxiliary heat source COP. In addition, comfort can be achieved stably by varying the set room temperature in a room with a small load. When a heat storage tank is installed or changing t... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biofuel, lipid enhancement, microalgae, wastewater treatment
Microalgae are unicellular photosynthetic eukaryotes that can treat wastewater and provide us with biofuel. Microalgae cultivation utilizing wastewater is a promising approach for synchronous wastewater treatment and biofuel production. However, previous studies suggest that high microalgae biomass production reduces lipid production and vice versa. For cost-effective biofuel production from microalgae, synchronous lipid and biomass enhancement utilizing wastewater is necessary. Therefore, this study brings forth a comprehensive review of synchronous microalgal lipid and biomass enhancement strategies for biofuel production and wastewater treatment. The review emphasizes the appropriate synergy of the microalgae species, culture media, and synchronous lipid and biomass enhancement conditions as a sustainable, efficient solution.

A Novel Approach to Transverse Flux Machine Construction
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: induction motor, permanent magnet synchronous motor, transverse flux machine
The article presents a concept for a new design of the well-known Transverse Flux Machine (TFM) made with the use of a flat core used in classical electrical machines. The proposed design was first analytically verified and was subsequently verified using the finite element method, which fully corroborated the results. The simulations show that a set of three single-phase TFM machines with slotted flat rotor yokes generates a torque over three times greater than that of an induction motor and twice as large as Fractional Slot Concentrated Winding—Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines (FSCW-PMSM). The performed comparative calculations confirmed that the torque generated by machines operating on principles similar to TFM can generate a torque much greater than those currently in common use.

Analysis of the Effects of Failure of a Gas Pipeline Caused by a Mechanical Damage
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: excavator, failure, gas pipeline, hazard
Natural gas continues to be one of the basic energy sources used as fuel in the power sector, in industries and in households. The potential and attractiveness of this fuel is gaining special significance in the current energy transitions from coal-based power engineering to power generation based on renewable energy sources. Natural gas is supplied to consumers mainly through a network of pipelines, which ensures a relatively high reliability of the supply. Still, failures occur due to the corrosion of pipeline walls, material defects or human errors, which can result in uncontrolled release of gas. The released gas can trigger dangerous phenomena, such as fires and explosions. This paper presents an analysis of the causes and effects of damage to a medium-pressure pipeline caused by earthworks carried out within an area where a pipeline is located. Holes in the pipeline due to the impact of an excavator bucket are analysed. The impact of the excavator bucket may cause a rupture equal... [more]

Recurrence of Sub-Synchronous Oscillation Accident of Hornsea Wind Farm in UK and Its Suppression Strategy
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: asymmetric fault, grid-side converter, Hornsea wind farm, positive sequence voltage, sub-synchronous oscillations
A large-scale power system breakdown in the United Kingdom caused blackouts in several important cities, losing about 3.2 percent of the load and affecting nearly 1 million power users on 9 August 2019. On the basis of the accident investigation report provided by the UK National Grid, the specific reasons for the sub-synchronous oscillation of Hornsea wind farm were analyzed. The Hornsea wind power system model was established by MATLAB simulation software to reproduce the accident. To solve this problem, based on the positive and negative sequence decomposition, the control strategy of grid-side converter of doubly-fed induction generator is improved to control the positive sequence voltage of the generator terminal, which can quickly recover the voltage by compensating the reactive power at the grid side. Consequently, the influence of the fault is weakened on the Hornsea wind farm system, and the sub-synchronous oscillation of the system is suppressed. The simulation results verify... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: doped nanocrystalline silicon oxide, monolithic perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells, silicon heterojunction, triple cation perovskite, tunnel recombination junction
Perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells have strong potential for high efficiency and low cost photovoltaics. In monolithic (two-terminal) configurations, one key element is the interconnection region of the two subcells, which should be designed for optimal light management and prevention of parasitic p/n junctions. We investigated monolithic perovskite/silicon-heterojunction (SHJ) tandem solar cells with a p/n nanocrystalline silicon/silicon-oxide recombination junction for improved infrared light management. This design can additionally provide for resilience to shunts and simplified cell processing. We probed modified SHJ solar cells, made from double-side polished n-type Si wafers, which included the proposed front-side p/n tunnel junction with the p-type film simultaneously functioning as selective charge transport layer for the SHJ bottom cell, trying different thicknesses for the n-type layer. Full tandem devices were then tested, by applying a planar n-i-p mixed-cation mixed-hal... [more]

The Economics of Coking Coal Mining: A Fossil Fuel Still Needed for Steel Production
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: coking coal, critical raw material, Dębieńsko project, mining investment
Coking coal has been on the European list of critical raw materials since 2014 due to its high economic importance and high supply risk. In 2017, coking coal narrowly missed passing the threshold of economic importance. However, out of caution, it remained on the list of critical raw materials, as the steel industry still needs it. It is likely to be phased out of the list below when it does not fully meet the required criteria. As there are no significant alternatives for this energy intensive industry and neither electrification nor material or energy efficiency improvements are yet available at a sufficient level of technological readiness, the European Union remains dependent on coking coal imports. Therefore, any coking coal mining project in Europe is of great importance and an important alternative to solving the problems of providing this raw material. In this study, the Dębieńsko coking coal project in Poland is analyzed using a scientifically proven methodology based on world... [more]

Effects of Experimental Parameters on Condensation Heat Transfer in Plate Fin Heat Exchanger
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: condensation heat transfer, heat transfer correlation, multi-stream PFHE, plate–fin heat exchanger (PFHE), Wilson plot method
This study aims to provide an experimental investigation and comparison of the condensation heat transfer characteristics in a plate−fin heat exchanger (PFHE). The heat flux, mass flux, and saturation pressure were adjusted as experimental parameters to verify the effects on the condensation heat transfer. In addition, condensation heat transfer correlation of two-stream PFHEs was provided based on the experimental data for utilization as a design reference for the heat exchanger. The turbulence is the most influential in heat transfer. One of the ways to foster turbulence is to increase shear stress. The higher flow velocity results in the higher shear stress. That was why increasing mass flux or the flow with higher vapor quality showed the higher heat transfer coefficient (HTC). Refrigerant properties such as viscosity and specific volume of vapor changed according to the saturation pressure. It is expected they affect the degree of turbulence too in similar manners. The mass flux w... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy system simulation, gas network simulation, Hydrogen, multi-energy system, power-to-gas
Due to the increasing share of renewable energy sources in the electrical network, the focus on decarbonization has extended into other energy sectors. The gas sector is of special interest because it can offer seasonal storage capacity and additional flexibility to the electricity sector. In this paper, we present a new simulation method designed for hydrogen-enriched natural gas network simulation. It can handle different gas compositions and is thus able to accurately analyze the impact of hydrogen injections into natural gas pipelines. After describing the newly defined simulation method, we demonstrate how the simulation tool can be used to analyze a hydrogen-enriched gas pipeline network. An exemplary co-simulation of coupled power and gas networks shows that hydrogen injections are severely constrained by the gas pipeline network, highlighting the importance and necessity of considering different gas compositions in the simulation.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbon dioxide emission, grants, LCA, My Electricity, photovoltaic (PV), Poland, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
One way to reduce CO2 emissions is to replace conventional energy sources with renewable ones. In order to encourage prosumers to invest in renewable energy, EU Member States are developing renewable energy subsidy programs. In Poland, in the years 2019−2020, the “My Electricity” program was implemented, co-financing was up to 50% of eligible costs (max PLN 5000, i.e., EUR 1111), and the total cost of the program was 251 million euro. During this period, around 400,000 prosumer installations were created in Poland, including over 220,000 prosumer PV Installations under the My Electricity program. The total power of the installation under the “My Electricity” program was 1.295 GWp with an average installation power of 5.72 kWp. It is estimated that the micro-installations will produce approx. 1.4 TWh of electricity annually. Depending on the replaced source of electricity (coal, gas, mix), in the next 30 years, it will help to avoid 26.2−42.7 million Mg of greenhouse gases calculated as... [more]

Comparison of the Reactive Scalar Gradient Evolution between Homogeneous MILD Combustion and Premixed Turbulent Flames
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: MILD combustion, premixed combustion, surface density function (SDF)
Moderate or intense low-oxygen dilution (MILD) combustion is a novel combustion technique that can simultaneously improve thermal efficiency and reduce emissions. This paper focuses on the differences in statistical behaviours of the surface density function (SDF = magnitude of the reaction progress variable gradient) between conventional premixed flames and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) type homogeneous-mixture combustion under MILD conditions using direct numerical simulations (DNS) data. The mean values of the SDF in the MILD combustion cases were found to be significantly smaller than those in the corresponding premixed flame cases. Moreover, the mean behaviour of the SDF in response to the variations of turbulence intensity were compared between MILD and premixed flame cases, and the differences are explained in terms of the strain rates induced by fluid motion and the ones arising from flame displacement speed. It was found that the effects of dilatation rate were much weaker i... [more]

Accurately identifying the types of insulation defects inside a gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) is of great significance for guiding maintenance work as well as ensuring the safe and stable operation of GIS. By building a set of 220 kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) GIS experiment platforms and manufacturing four different types of insulation defects (including multiple sizes and positions), 180,828 pulse current signals under multiple voltage levels are successfully measured. Then, the apparent discharge quantity and the discharge time, two inherent physical quantities unaffected by the experimental platform and measurement system, are obtained after the pulse current signal is denoised, according to which 70 statistical features are extracted. In this paper, a pattern recognition method based on generalized discriminant component analysis driven support vector machine (SVM) is detailed and the corresponding selection criterion of involved parameters is established. A Dual Resonance Electromagnetic Vibration Energy Harvester for Wide Harvested Frequency Range with Enhanced Output Power
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: dual resonance frequencies, enhanced “band-pass” harvested power, independent resonant frequencies, vibration electromagnetic energy harvester, wide harvested frequency range
A dual resonance vibration electromagnetic energy harvester (EMEH) is proposed in this paper to extend frequency range. Compared with the conventional dual resonance harvester, the proposed system realizes an enhanced “band-pass” harvesting characteristic by increasing the relative displacement between magnet and coil among two resonance frequencies with a significant improvement in the average harvested power. Furthermore, two resonant frequencies are decoupled in the proposed system, which leads to a more straightforward design. The proposed dual resonance EMEH is constructed with a tubular dual spring-mass structure. It is designed with a serpentine planar spring and the coil position is optimized for higher power density with an overall size of 53.9 cm3 for the dual resonance EMEH. It realizes an output power of 11 mW at the first resonant frequency of 58 Hz, 14.9 mW at the second resonant frequency of 74.5 Hz, and 0.52 mW at 65 Hz, which is in the middle of the two resonance frequ... Series Architecture on Hybrid Electric Vehicles: A Review
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Fuel Economy, Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV), Powertrain Efficiency, Series Architecture, Silicon Carbide (SiC), Supercapacitor, Turbocompound
The use of series architecture nowadays is mainly on hybrid buses. In comparison with series-parallel and parallel architectures, which are usually exploited on medium-size cars, the series architecture allows achieving internal combustion engine higher efficiency. The downside of this architecture, due to a double energy conversion (i.e., mechanical energy converted in electrical energy and electrical energy converted again in mechanical energy), is that additional losses are introduced. For this reason, the parallel and the series/parallel architectures were considered more suitable for hybrid medium-size cars. Nevertheless, the use of new technologies can change this scenario. Regarding storage systems, supercapacitors achieved a significant energy density, and they guarantee much higher efficiency than battery storage. Moreover, the use of wide-bandgap components for power electronic converters, such as silicon carbide devices, assure lower losses. In this scenario, the series arch... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: AC/DC converter, fault diagnosis, FDI, IFDI, predictive maintenance
The reliability of systems and components is a fundamental need for the efficient development of a smart distribution grid. In fact, the presence of a fault in one component of the grid could potentially lead to a service interruption and loss of profit. Since faults cannot be avoided, the introduction of a diagnostic scheme could predict the fault of a component in order to carry out predictive maintenance. In this framework, this paper proposes a novel Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) scheme for AC/DC converters in MV/LV substations. In order to improve the reliability of the FDI procedure, the system architecture includes also an Instrument Fault Detection and Isolation section for identifying faults that could occur on the instruments and sensors involved in the monitoring process of the AC/DC converter.
