March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: anthocyanins, energy consumption, Energy Conversion, polyphenols, pulsed ultrasound, yield of extraction
This study investigated the impact of sonication parameters on the efficiency of the extraction of bioactive substances from hawthorn berries. The ultrasonic treatment was performed in two modes: continuous and pulse. In the pulse mode, the samples were sonicated with the following processor settings: 1 s on-2 s off. The effective ultrasonic processor times were 5, 10, and 15 min, and the total extraction times were 15 min, 30 min, and 45 min. The content of total polyphenols and total anthocyanins was determined by a spectrophotometric method. We show that the operating mode of the processor affects extraction efficiency, energy consumption and unit energy inputs. Extraction supported by a pulsating ultrasonic field allowed saving from 20% to 51% of energy with a simultaneous higher efficiency of the process. In addition, we show that the unit energy consumption in the pulsed mode was about 40% to 68% lower than the energy consumption in the case of continuous operation.
Energy Poverty and Sustainable Economic Development: An Exploration of Correlations and Interdependencies in European Countries
Blanka Tundys, Agnieszka Bretyn, Maciej Urbaniak
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: correlation and indexes, energy poverty, sustainable development
The problem of energy poverty exists in practically every European country. Its size and scope are determined by a variety of factors, ranging from economic development to the direction of energy and climate policy implementation to cultural factors. Our aim in this paper was to carry out a comparative analysis of indicators related to energy poverty and sustainable development to identify correlations and links between the two issues and determine how they are related. The fact that the analysis was performed for most European countries is new and represents a broad spectrum of research; we were not limited to studies of countries bound by formal political-economic arrangements or by consideration of the degree of economic development. This approach enabled explication of how diverse the situation is in Europe. The research methods used included a critical analysis of the literature and the use of descriptive and mathematical-statistical tools. The main conclusions and findings of the... [more]
Dependence of the Equivalent Circulation Density of Formate Drilling Fluids on the Molecular Mass of the Polymer Reagent

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: drilling fluid, equivalent circulation density, formate fluid, polymer reagent, preservation of formation permeability, weighted mud
Construction of offshore gas wells is characterized by increased requirements for both the technological process in general and the technological parameters of drilling fluids in particular. Parameters and properties of the used drilling muds must meet a large number of requirements. The main one is the preservation of the permeability of the reservoirs, in addition to the environmental and technological concerns. At the same time, pressures in the productive formation at offshore fields are often high; the anomaly coefficient is 1.2 and higher. The use of barite in such conditions can lead to contamination of the formation and a decrease in future well flow rates. In this regard, the development and study of the compositions for weighted drilling muds is necessary and relevant. The paper presents investigations on the development of such a composition based on salts of formic acid (formates) and evaluates the effect of the molecular weight of the polymer reagent (partially hydrolyzed... March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: jet-assisted drilling, organ-pipe nozzle, rock erosion, self-excited oscillation, supercritical carbon dioxide jet, unconventional energy resources
Supercritical carbon dioxide (SCO2) jets are a promising method to assist drilling, enhance oil−gas production, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To further improve the drilling efficiency of SCO2 jet-assisted drilling, organ-pipe nozzles were applied to generate a self-excited oscillation SCO2 jet (SEOSJ). The impact pressure oscillation and rock erosion capability of SEOSJs under both supercritical and gaseous CO2 (GCO2) ambient conditions were experimentally investigated. It was found that the impact pressure oscillation characteristics of SEOSJs produced by organ-pipe nozzles are dramatically affected by the oscillation chamber length. The optimum range of the dimensionless chamber length to generate the highest impact pressure peak and the strongest pressure oscillation is within 7−9. The dimensionless pressure peak and the pressure ratio decreases gradually with increasing pressure difference, whereas the pressure oscillation intensity increases with increasing pressure differ... Why Low-Carbon Publicity Effect Limits? The Role of Heterogeneous Intention in Reducing Household Energy Consumption
Jin Zhang, Lianrui Ma, Jinkai Li
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: household energy behavior, rapid urbanization areas, structural equation model
Low-carbon knowledge is seen as having a key role in interfering with household energy consumption behaviors by wide consensus from political and academic areas. Whether low-carbon publicity will help to reduce household energy consumption is still in dispute. By constructing an integrated knowledge-intention-behavior model and using 1335 detailed survey questionnaires of household energy behavior in Henan Province, the central area in China, this paper finds that in the developing area low-carbon knowledge or publicity cannot positively impact household energy-saving behavior even if mediated by energy awareness and energy-saving attitudes. Low-carbon knowledge does improve energy-saving attitude and attitude does not decrease household energy consumption directly. Familiarity with particular energy-saving knowledge would decrease the household energy consumption but not significantly in the statistics. Path analysis unfolds the reason that the heterogeneous effects of purchase-based... [more]
Design and Operation of a Polygeneration System in Spanish Climate Buildings under an Exergetic Perspective
Ana Picallo-Perez, Jose Maria Sala-Lizarraga
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AHU exergy analysis, exergy in office buildings, exergy polygeneration indicators
This work defines and analyzes the performance of a polygeneration system in five different locations in Spain to maintain the thermal comfort and air quality of an office building. The facility is based on a chiller and a CHP engine with PV panels that provide almost all the electricity demand of the chiller. According to the energy performance analysis results, the installation working in Bilbao is a full polygeneration system since no electricity needs to be imported from the grid in summer. To quantify the energy savings related to a separated production facility, polygeneration indicators (percentage of savings PES/PExS and equivalent electric efficiency EEE/EExE) have been calculated in energy and exergy terms. The main motivation for using exergy is based on the ambiguity that can arise from the point of view of the First Law. As expected, the exergetic indicators have lower values than the energetic ones. In addition, an in-depth analysis was conducted for the air-handling unit... [more]

Chengzao Han, Yun Long, Mohan Xu, Bin Ji
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cavitation, entropy production, large eddy simulation (LES), verification and validation (V&V), vorticity transport equation, waterjet pump
In this paper, large eddy simulation (LES) was adopted to simulate the cavitating flow in a waterjet pump with emphasis on the tip clearance flow. The numerical results agree well with the experimental observations, which indicates that the LES method can make good predictions of the unsteady cavitating flows around a rotor blade. The LES verification and validation (LES V&V) analysis was used to reveal the influence of cavitation on the flow structures. It can be found that the LES errors in cavitating region are larger than those in the non-cavitating area, which is mainly caused by more complicated cavitating and tip clearance flow structures. Further analysis of the interaction between the cavitating and vortex flow by the relative vorticity transport equation shows that the stretching, dilatation and baroclinic torque terms have major effects on the generation and transport of vortex structure. Meanwhile the Coriolis force term and viscosity term also exacerbate the vorticity tran... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: activated carbon, carbon coating, conductive additive-free, nitrogen-doped, supercapacitors
The development of supercapacitors with high volumetric capacitance and high-rate performance has been an important research topic. Activated carbon (AC), which is a widely used material for supercapacitor electrodes, has different surface structures, porosities, and electrochemical properties. However, the low conductivity of the electrode material is a major problem for the efficient use of AC in supercapacitors. To tackle this challenge, we prepared conductive, additive-free electrodes for supercapacitors by a simple one-pot treatment of AC with melamine (nitrogen source), pitch, and sucrose (both carbon source). Nitrogen-doped and carbon-coated AC was successfully generated after high-temperature heat treatment. The AC was doped with approximately 0.5 at.% nitrogen, and coated with carbon leading to a decreased oxygen content. Thin carbon layers (~10 nm) were coated onto the outer surface of the AC, as shown in TEM images. The modification of the AC surface with a sucrose source is... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: anisotropy of roughness, Barton ten standard profiles, correlation, joint roughness coefficients, novel discontinuity roughness parameter
Joint roughness determination is a fundamental issue in many areas of rock engineering, because joint roughness has significant influences on mechanical properties and deformation behavior of rock masses. Available models suggested in the literature neglected combined effects of shear direction, scale of rock discontinuities, inclination angle, and amplitude of asperities during the roughness calculations. The main goals of this paper are to establish a comprehensive parameter that considers the characteristics of the size effect, anisotropy, and point spacing effect of the discontinuity roughness, and to investigate the correlation between the proposed comprehensive parameter and joint roughness coefficients. In this work, the Barton ten standard profiles are digitally represented, then the morphological characteristics of the discontinuity profiles are extracted. A comprehensive parameter that considers the characteristics of the size effect, anisotropy, and point spacing effect of t... [more]

Keywords: Gramian angular field, multistate appliances, nonintrusive load monitoring, overlapping sliding window, recurrence plot
In this paper, a time-lapse image method is proposed to improve the classification accuracy for multistate appliances with complex patterns based on nonintrusive load monitoring (NILM). A log-likelihood ratio detector with a maxima algorithm was applied to construct a real-time event detection of home appliances. Moreover, a novel image-combining method was employed to extract information from the data based on the Gramian angular field (GAF) and recurrence plot (RP) transformations. From the simulation results, it was confirmed that the classification accuracy can be increased by up to 30% with the proposed method compared with the conventional approaches in classifying multistate appliances.

Subject: Environment
Keywords: active balancing system, battery management system, lithium-iron-phosphorous cell, mine application
To use lithium-iron-phosphate battery packs in the supply systems of any electric mining equipment and/or machines, the required conditions of work safety must be met. This applies in particular to coal mines endangered by fire and/or explosion. To meet the spark-safety conditions, the cells (together with the battery management system—BMS) must be isolated from the influence of the environment, and therefore placed in special fire-tight housings. This significantly degrades the heat dissipation, thus affecting the operating conditions of the cell-packs. Therefore, their usage without the so-called BMS is not recommended, as shown in the authors’ preliminary research. In practice, various BMS are used, most often with the so-called passive balancing. However, their application in mines is uncertain, due to the effect of heating under operation. When it comes to active BMS, they usually possess a quite complex structure and hence, are relatively expensive. Therefore, the authors conduct... [more]
Thermal Performance Characteristics of a Microchannel Gas Heater for Solar Heating Applications

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: convective heat transfer, microchannel, solar receiver, thermal performance
In the present article, the heat transfer and fluid flow of the air in a compact microchannel gas heater (MCGH) was experimentally quantified. To understand the effect of heat flux value (HFV), and inlet velocity on the heat transfer coefficient (HTC), wall temperature, friction factor, Nusselt number, average pressure-drop value (PDV) and performance index (PI), a microchannel gas heater was constructed and tested with pressurized air. The results showed that the HTC was 20 W/(sqmK) to 70 W/(sqmK), corresponding to inlet velocities 6.7 m/s and 16.7 m/s, respectively within HFV < 1 kW/m2. Also, the highest PI was 1.19 meaning that the HT rate can be increased by 19% at u = 15 m/s in comparison with the reference case (at u = 13.3 m/s). Likewise, the HTC was intensified once the inlet velocity is increased. It was also identified that increasing the HFV has a strong effect on wall temperature, however, slightly changes the HTC. By increasing the heat flux value from 200 W/sqm to 1000... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 EOR, CO2 storage, injection optimization, Machine Learning, proxy modelling, reservoir management, waterflooding
Optimal injector selection is a key oilfield development endeavor that can be computationally costly. Methods proposed in the literature to reduce the number of function evaluations are often designed for pattern level analysis and do not scale easily to full field analysis. These methods are rarely applied to both water and miscible gas floods with carbon storage objectives; reservoir management decision making under geological uncertainty is also relatively underexplored. In this work, several innovations are proposed to efficiently determine the optimal injector location under geological uncertainty. A geomodel ensemble is prepared in order to capture the range of geological uncertainty. In these models, the reservoir is divided into multiple well regions that are delineated through spatial clustering. Streamline simulation results are used to train a meta-learner proxy. A posterior sampling algorithm evaluates injector locations across multiple geological realizations. The proposed... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: air pollution, clean energy, Energy Efficiency, health benefits
Meeting the Paris Agreement on climate change requires substantial investments in low-emissions energy and significant improvements in end-use energy efficiency. These measures can also deliver improved air quality and there is broad recognition of the health benefits of decarbonising energy. Monetising these health benefits is an important part of a robust assessment of the costs and benefits of renewable energy and energy efficiency programs (clean energy programs (CEP)) and a variety of methods have been used to estimate health benefits at national, regional, continental and global scales. Approaches, such as unit damage cost estimates and impact pathways, differ in complexity and spatial coverage and can deliver different estimates for air pollution costs/benefits. To date, the monetised health benefits of CEP in Australia have applied international and global estimates that can range from 2−229USD/tCO2 (USD 2016). Here, we calculate the current health damage costs of coal-fired po... [more]

Keywords: CO2 emissions, economic feasibility indicators, grid-connected, Near East University Hospital, Northern Cyprus, orientation angles, PV system
The growth of populations and economy in Northern Cyprus has led to continuing utilization of fossil fuels as the primary source of electricity, which will raise environmental pollution. Thus, utilizing renewable energy, particularly solar energy, might be a solution to minimize this issue. This paper presents the potential of grid-connected solar PV power generation at Near East University Hospital (NEU Hospital), one of the largest and leading medical facilities in Northern Cyprus, to meet the energy demand during the daytime to reduce energy bills. For this purpose, the first objective of the study is to evaluate the solar energy potential as a power source for the NEU Hospital based on four datasets (actual measurement, Satellite Application Facility on Climate Monitoring (CMSAF), Surface Radiation Data Set-Heliosat (SARAH), and ERA-5, produced by the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecast). The results showed that the solar resource of the selected location is categoriz... [more]

Keywords: Francis turbine, large-eddy simulation (LES), Liutex, Q criterion, small guide vane opening, vortex identification
The inter-blade passage vortex, the vortex rope of the draft tube, and the vortex in the guide apparatus are the characteristics of flow instability of the Francis turbine, which may lead to fatigue failure in serious cases. In the current study, in order to accurately capture the transient turbulent characteristics of flow under different conditions and fully understand the flow field and vortex structure, we conduct a simulation that adopts sliding grid technology and the large-eddy simulation (LES) method based on the wall-adapting local eddy viscosity (WALE) model. Using the pressure iso-surface method, the Q criterion, and the latest third-generation Liutex vortex identification method, this study analyzes and compares the inter-blade passage vortex, the vortex rope of the draft tube, and the outflow and vortex in the guide apparatus, focusing on the capture ability of flow field information by various vortex identification methods and the unique vortex structure under the conditi... Keywords: composite electrode, dispersibility, hydrophobic/hydrophilic properties, nanofiber support, supercapacitor
Concerns associated with global warming and the depleting reserves of fossil fuels have highlighted the importance of high−performance energy storage systems (ESSs) for efficient energy usage. ESSs such as supercapacitors can contribute to improved power quality of an energy generation system, which is characterized by a slow load response. Composite materials are primarily used as supercapacitor electrodes because they can compensate for the disadvantages of carbon or metal oxide electrode materials. In this study, a composite of oxide nanoparticles loaded on a carbon nanofiber support was used as an electrode material for a hybrid supercapacitor. The addition of a small amount of hydrophilic FeN@GnP (Fe− and N−doped graphene nanoplates) modified the surface properties of carbon nanofibers prepared by electrospinning. Accordingly, the effects of the hydrophobic/hydrophilic surface properties of the nanofiber support on the morphology of Co3O4 nanoparticles loaded on the nanofiber, as... [more]

Keywords: electrical tomography, long short-term memory (LSTM), Machine Learning, moisture detection, neural networks
This paper refers to an original concept of tomographic measurement of brick wall humidity using an algorithm based on long short-term memory (LSTM) neural networks. The measurement vector was treated as a data sequence with a single time step in the presented study. This approach enabled the use of an algorithm utilising a recurrent deep neural network of the LSTM type as a system for converting the measurement vector into output images. A prototype electrical impedance tomograph was used in the research. The LSTM network, which is often employed for time series classification, was used to tackle the inverse problem. The task of the LSTM network was to convert 448 voltage measurements into spatial images of a selected section of a historical building’s brick wall. The 3D tomographic image mesh consisted of 11,297 finite elements. A novelty is using the measurement vector as a single time step sequence consisting of 448 features (channels). Through the appropriate selection of network... [more]
Electric Vehicle Fleets as Balancing Instrument in Micro-Grids

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrical vehicles, Energy Storage, flexible programming, micro-grid planning
Micro-grids have become the building block of modern energy systems, where distributed resources are the characterizing feature. The charging operation of electric vehicles can be exploited as a flexible load to achieve operational goals of the micro-grid. In the particular case of car-sharing fleets, the degrees of freedom in the charging procedures are reduced when compared to private users. In this work, we illustrate how a car sharing fleet can be incorporated as a flexible load in the micro-grid management system. A linear optimization problem is formulated, where the cost function makes a trade-off between the gain in flexibility in the micro-grid and the loss incurred by the car-sharing service for delaying the recharging procedure of the EV. The proposed approach is evaluated on a data set of charging events generated by a real car-sharing fleet showing that the EMS allows reducing the daily peak demand requested to the public grid and diminishes the operational costs.

Keywords: chemical bath deposition, perovskite/silicon, tandem solar cells, tin oxide
Tandem solar cells, based on perovskite and crystalline silicon absorbers, are promising candidates for commercial applications. Tin oxide (SnO2), applied via the spin-coating method, has been among the most used electron transfer layers in normal (n-i-p) perovskite/silicon tandem cells. SnO2 synthesized by chemical bath deposition (CBD) has not yet been applied in tandem devices. This method shows improved efficiency in perovskite single cells and allows for deposition over a larger area. Our study is the first to apply low-temperature processed SnO2 via CBD to a homojunction silicon solar cell without additional deposition of a recombination layer. By controlling the reaction time, a tandem efficiency of 16.9% was achieved. This study shows that tandem implementation is possible through the CBD method, and demonstrates the potential of this method in commercial application to textured silicon surfaces with large areas.
