Natarajan Shanmugam, Rishi Pugazhendhi, Rajvikram Madurai Elavarasan, Pitchandi Kasiviswanathan, Narottam Das
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: antireflection coatings (ARCs), fabrication techniques, light trapping structures, nanostructures, nanotechnology, photovoltaics (PVs), power conversion efficiency
The solar photovoltaic (PV) cell is a prominent energy harvesting device that reduces the strain in the conventional energy generation approach and endorses the prospectiveness of renewable energy. Thus, the exploration in this ever-green field is worth the effort. From the power conversion efficiency standpoint of view, PVs are consistently improving, and when analyzing the potential areas that can be advanced, more and more exciting challenges are encountered. One such crucial challenge is to increase the photon availability for PV conversion. This challenge is solved using two ways. First, by suppressing the reflection at the interface of the solar cell, and the other way is to enhance the optical pathlength inside the cell for adequate absorption of the photons. Our review addresses this challenge by emphasizing the various strategies that aid in trapping the light in the solar cells. These strategies include the usage of antireflection coatings (ARCs) and light-trapping structures... [more]
The Flow Characteristics of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide (SC-CO2) Jet Fracturing in Limited Perforation Scenarios
Can Cai, Song Xie, Qingren Liu, Yong Kang, Dong Lian, Banrun Li
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flow field, jet fracturing, limited perforation, supercritical carbon dioxide
Supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) jet fracturing is a promising alternative for shale gas fracturing instead of water. However, most studies pay more attention to the fracture generation and ignore the flow characteristic of SC-CO2 jet fracturing in limited perforation scenarios. To accurately explore the flow field in a limited perforation tunnel, a numerical model of a SC-CO2 jet in a limited perforation tunnel before fracture initiation is established based on the corresponding engineering background. The comparison between the numerical simulation and experiments has proved that the model is viable for this type of analysis. By using the numerical method, the flow field of the SC-CO2 jet fracturing is analyzed, and influencing factors are discussed later. The verification and validation show that the numerical model is both reliable and accurate. With the dramatic fluctuating of turbulent mixing in a fully developed region, there is an apparent increase in the CO2 density and t... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: fly ash geopolymer, GGBFS, rheology, strength, Sustainability, viscosity
Geopolymers are less energy-demanding alternatives to Portland cement binders. The subject of geopolymer rheology has not yet been fully explored, and the available literature is limited to a narrow range of material compositions. This paper presents the rheological and mechanical response of fly-ash based geopolymer mortars. Investigations were made of the effect of different levels of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) addition levels on the rheological properties of fresh geopolymers as well as their mechanical performances at 2, 14 and 28 days. The aim of the study was to obtain flow curves and to establish the correlation between shear stress and shear rate. The results have shown that geopolymer mortar is a pseudoplastic liquid presenting shear thinning behavior, moreover, with the increase of GGBFS content, higher material strengths were obtained and the total porosity was reduced.

Zhaoyong Mao, Guangyong Yang, Tianqi Zhang, Wenlong Tian
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building, Computational Fluid Dynamics, performance, Savonius, wind turbine
The building-integrated wind turbine is a new technology for the utilization of wind energy in cities. Previous studies mainly focused on the wind turbines mounted on the roofs of buildings. This paper discusses the performance of Savonius wind turbines which are mounted on the edges of a high-rise building. A transient CFD method is used to investigate the performance of the turbine and the interaction flows between the turbine and the building. The influence of three main parameters, including the turbine gap, wind angle, and adjacent turbines, are considered. The variations of the turbine torque and power under different operating conditions are evaluated and explained in depth. It is found that the edge-mounted Savonius turbine has a higher coefficient of power than that operating in uniform flows; the average Cp of the turbine under 360-degree wind angles is 92.5% higher than the turbine operating in uniform flows. It is also found that the flow around the building has a great imp... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: chip integration, microfluidics, microwave heating, silicon
This paper presents a novel concept for the co-design of microwave heaters and microfluidic channels for sub-microliter volumes in continuous flow microfluidics. Based on the novel co-design concept, two types of heaters are presented, co-designed and manufactured in high-resistivity silicon-glass technology, resulting in a building block for consumable and mass-producible micro total analysis systems. Resonant and non-resonant co-planar waveguide transmission line heaters are investigated for heating of sub-micro-liter liquid volumes in a channel section at 25 GHz. The heating rates of 16 and 24 °C/s are obtained with power levels of 32 dBm for the through line and the open-ended line microwave heater, respectively. The heating uniformity of developed devices is evaluated with a Rhodamine B and deionized water mixture on a micrometer scale using the microwave-optical measurement setup. Measurement results showed a good agreement with simulations and demonstrated the potential of micro... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biomass, boiler efficiency, characteristics, co-firing, decision parameters, GHG emissions, result parameters, steam boilers, structural parameters
One of the ways used to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide and other harmful substances is the implementation of biomass co-firing processes with coals. Such processes have been implemented for many years throughout many countries of the world, and have included using existing high-power coal boilers. Despite numerous experiments, there are still no analyses in the literature allowing for their generalization. The purpose of this paper is to determine the generalized energy and ecological characteristics of dust steam boilers co-firing hard coal with biomass. The energy characteristics determined in the paper are the dependence of the gross energy efficiency of boilers on such decision parameters as their efficiency and the share of biomass chemical energy in fuel. However, the ecological characteristics are the dependence of emission streams: CO, NO, SO2, and dust on the same decision parameters. From a mathematical point of view, the characteristics are approximation functions bet... [more]

Dongkyoung Lee, Jungdon Suk
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: absorption coefficient measurement, laser cutting, laser material interaction, lithium-ion battery, multi-physical phenomena, uncompressed anode
Lithium-ion batteries are actively used for many applications due to many advantages. Although electrodes are important during laser cutting, most laser cutting studies use commercially available electrodes. Thus, effects of electrodes characteristics on laser cutting have not been effectively studied. Since the electrodes’ characteristics can be manipulated in the laboratory, this study uses an uncompressed anode on laser cutting for the first time. Using the lab-made anode, this study identifies laser cutting characteristics of the uncompressed anode. First, the absorption coefficients of graphite and copper in the ultraviolet, visible, and infrared range are measured. The measured absorptivity of the graphite and copper at the wavelength of 1070 nm is 88.25% and 1.92%, respectively. In addition, cutting phenomena can be categorized in five regions: excessive cutting, proper cutting, defective cutting, excessive ablation, and proper ablation. The five regions are composed of a combin... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: breather vent valve, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Petroleum, road tanker, sloshing, vapor loss
This study attempts to uncover the most common issue of fuel shortage faced by the oil and transportation industry worldwide. In Pakistan, petroleum is transported to the northern areas from the south coast. Currently, this is done using road tankers as a pipeline is still under construction. However, even after the pipeline becomes operative, road tankers would still be used for intra-city transport. Findings from this study can be used to determine the inter-city transport losses faced by oil companies. This study determines the hydrocarbons lost to the environment during inter-city road transport of petroleum. It takes nearly 2−3 days to complete a one-way trip with the fully loaded tank. Much work has been reported worldwide on hydrocarbon emissions, but nearly all of it has been done either for storage tanks/vessels or fuel tanks in rails/cars. The aim of this study was to investigate the actual amount of fuel lost to the environment due to the sloshing of liquid. Also, the result... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cascode configuration, device degradation, electronic trapping effects, failure mechanisms, gallium nitride HEMT, off-state gate bias stress
We present a detailed study of dynamic switching instability and static reliability of a Gallium Nitride (GaN) Metal-Insulator-Semiconductor High-Electron-Mobility-Transistor (MIS-HEMT) based cascode switch under off-state (negative bias) Gate bias stress (VGS, OFF). We have investigated drain channel current (IDS, Max) collapse/degradation and turn-on and rise-time (tR) delay, on-state resistance (RDS-ON) and maximum transconductance (Gm, max) degradation and threshold voltage (VTH) shift for pulsed and prolonged off-state gate bias stress VGS, OFF. We have found that as stress voltage magnitude and stress duration increases, similarly IDS, Max and RDS-ON degradation, VTH shift and turn-on/rise time (tR) delay, and Gm, max degradation increases. In a pulsed off-state VGS, OFF stress experiment, the device instabilities and degradation with electron trapping effects are studied through two regimes of stress voltages. Under low stress, VTH shift, IDS collapse, RDS-ON degradation has ver... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: amine concentration, Carbon Dioxide Capture, CO2 loading, corrosivity, tertiary amines, thermal stability
In this study, the thermal stability and corrosivity of various CO2-loaded tertiary amine blends in both aqueous and non-aqueous form in stainless steel cylinders were studied for combined acid gas and water removal. The thermal stability was measured from the remaining amine concentration and the corrosivity was measured from the amount of various metals in blends using titration and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), respectively. The experimental data were used to calculate the rate constants of amine group loss. The developed model represented the experimental data very well. Solvent change from H2O to triethylene glycol (TEG) in blends decreased the thermal stability and vice versa for corrosivity. The amine stability was increased when contact with stainless steel was reduced. An increase in the amine concentration or CO2 loading at constant temperature decreased the thermal stability and vice versa for corrosivity.

Keywords: FPGA implementation, homotopic continuation method, homotopy path planning method, mobile robotics, repulsion parameter
In recent times, autonomous robots have become more relevant, aiming not only to be an extension of mobility and human performance but also allowing them to independently solve specific problems such as finding free-collision paths within some defined environments. In order to achieve this, several techniques have been developed, like action-reaction algorithms, sampling-based algorithms, and deterministic algorithms such as the Homotopy Path Planning Method (HPPM). This work presents, for the first time, a complete deterministic collision-free path planning scheme implemented in FPGA, which is mounted on a Scribbler 2 robot from Parallax. Then, an automatic algorithm of the repulsion parameter for the HPPM method is presented, using as a reference the minimum distance between the center of each obstacle with respect to the homotopic ideal path; furthermore, an algorithm is proposed for discriminating dead-end routes and collision risk trajectories, which allows us to obtain a feasible... March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: DC-link capacitor sizing, drone battery charging, inductive-coupled resonant circuit, opportunity charging, series-series architecture, wireless power transfer
Wireless inductive-coupled power transfer and opportunity battery charging are very appealing techniques in drone applications. Weight and size are very critical constraints in drones, so the battery and the on-board electronics must be as light and small as possible. The on-board components involved in the resonant inductive-coupled wireless power transfer usually consist of the secondary coil, the compensation capacitor, the bridge rectifier, the LC-filter and the battery. This paper suggests a sizing of the LC-filter capacitor that improves the charging power of the battery. In addition, further on-board space and size is saved by using the stray inductance of the battery as filtering inductor. LTSpice simulations and experimental tests carried out on the prototype of a wireless power transfer circuit shows the dependency of the power delivered to the battery on the filter capacitor size. Finally, it is found that the power transfer to the battery is maximized by choosing the capaci... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: degradation characteristics, impulse current, microscopic, multiple lightning, ZnO varistors
In view of the problem that ZnO varistors are often subjected to thermal breakdown and deterioration due to lightning strikes in low-voltage power distribution systems, this article used a 8/20 µs multi-pulse surge current with a pulse time interval of 50 ms to perform shock experiments on ZnO varistors. SEM scanning electron microscope and an XRD diffractometer were used to analyze the structure of the grain boundary layer and the change of the crystalline phase material of ZnO varistor under the action of a multi-pulse current. The damage mechanism of ZnO varistor under the multi-pulse current was studied at the micro level. The results show that the average impact life of different types of ZnO varistor is significantly different. It was found that the types of trace elements and grain size in the grain boundary layer will affect the ability of ZnO varistor to withstand multi-pulse current. As the number of impulses increases, the grain structure of the ZnO varistor continues to deg... [more]

Keywords: cyberphysical systems, deep feature learning, SCADA Anomaly Detection, semi-supervised anomaly detection, sparse stacked autoencoders
Autonomous fault detection plays a major role in the Critical Energy Infrastructure (CEI) domain, since sensor faults cause irreparable damage and lead to incorrect results on the condition monitoring of Cyber-Physical (CP) systems. This paper focuses on the challenging application of wind turbine (WT) monitoring. Specifically, we propose the two challenging architectures based on learning deep features, namely—Long Short Term Memory-Stacked Autoencoders (LSTM-SAE), and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN-SAE), for semi-supervised fault detection in wind CPs. The internal learnt features will facilitate the classification task by assigning each upcoming measurement into its corresponding faulty/normal operation status. To illustrate the quality of our schemes, their performance is evaluated against real-world’s wind turbine data. From the experimental section we are able to validate that both LSTM-SAE and CNN-SAE schemes provide high classification scores, indicating the high detection r... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: control system, distributed renewable energy source, grid integration, modular multilevel converter, photovoltaic power system
The direct integration of Photovoltaic (PV) to the three-phase Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) without dc−dc converters results in high-efficiency PV power plant with increased energy yield. The arm power control method for the MMC further improves the extraction of available power under uneven irradiance across different phases of the MMC. However, the uneven irradiance between the sub-modules results in residual voltage that results in harmonics and unbalance components. In this paper, the effect of uneven irradiance across the sub-module of the MMC is investigated with arm power control method. A modified balancing algorithm for the arm power control of the MMC is proposed which enables balanced power to be injected into ac grid despite uneven irradiance across the sub-modules in the MMC. The modified balancing algorithm enables to keep the unbalance in the phase currents below 10% and the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) is confined as per IEEE 519 standard.

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: BJT, Modelling, self-heating, silicon carbide, SPICE
This paper refers to the issue of modelling characteristics of SiC power bipolar junction transistor (BJT), including the self-heating phenomenon. The electrothermal model of the tested device is demonstrated and experimentally verified. The electrical model is based on the isothermal Gummel−Poon model, but several modifications were made including the improved current gain factor (β) model and the modified model of the quasi-saturation region. The accuracy of the presented model was assessed by comparison of measurement and simulation results of selected characteristics of the BT1206-AC SiC BJT manufactured by TranSiC. In this paper, a single device characterization has only been performed. The demonstrated results of research show the evident temperature impact on the transistor d.c. characteristics. A good compliance between the measured and calculated characteristics of the considered transistor is observed even in quasi-saturation mode.

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: argumentative discourse analysis, clean energy technologies, innovation policy, socio-technical transition, strateg0ic niche management
In this paper, we investigate the transition to clean energy technologies in the Boston area, as perceived through the lens of strategic niche management. The main goal of the study was to assess the role of policy in fostering/hindering the development of the clean energy niche and the complete deployment of clean energy technologies in this area. Using argumentative discourse analysis, our research showed that the clean energy niche in the Boston area is generally perceived as strong and dynamic. However, the public de-legitimizing narrative identified gaps at the policy level that include, among others, the limited engagement of the local and federal government in breaking through well-established practices and regulatory frameworks, funding, and infrastructure. These gaps are likely to delay the market uptake of clean energies in this area.

Keywords: eddy current pulsed thermography (ECPT), joint degradation, non-contact evaluation, transient thermal response curves
In this paper, a non-contact degradation evaluation method for insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) modules is proposed based on eddy current pulsed thermography approach. In non-contact heat excitation procedures, a high-power induction heater is introduced to generate heat excitation in IGBT modules. The thermographs of the whole temperature mapping are recorded non-invasively by an IR camera. As a result, the joint degradation of IGBT modules can be evaluated by the transient thermal response curves derived from the recorded thermographs. Firstly, the non-destructive evaluation principle of the eddy current pulsed thermography (ECPT) system for an IGBT module with a heat sink is introduced. A 3D simulation module is built with physical parameters in ANSYS simulations, and then thermal propagation behavior considering the degradation impact is investigated. An experimental ECPT system is set up to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The experimental results show that... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: ecology, economy, equity, provincial carbon emission and sink, spatial pattern
China has committed to ambitious targets to reduce its carbon emissions in the next decades, in order to combat climate change and improve the environment. The realization of the targets depends on the fair and effective mitigation plans of all provinces. However, with varying ecological and environmental conditions and social-economic development, it is a critical issue to quantify the provinces’ efforts equally. This paper proposed a comprehensive fE index in coordinating ecology, equity and economy, by accounting for carbon emissions and sinks to characterize provincial carbon emission status in China, from 2000 to 2017, which shows a spatial pattern of “boundary high, central low”. The provinces with higher fE value (>1.5) in boundary areas can be seen as “relative equality” provinces with good ecology circulation, equity and economic efficiency. The provinces with lower fE value (<0.7) in central areas around Bohai Bay are regarded as “severe inequality” provinces, and are iden... [more]
Electrical Damping Assessment and Stability Considerations for a Highly Electrified Liquefied Natural Gas Plant

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrical damping estimation, electrical generators, LNG plants, small-signal modeling, stability analysis, thyristor variable frequency drives
In recent years, the Oil & Gas industry has been subjected to a progressive electrification process aiming to comply with global environmental requirements on CO2 emissions reduction. High-power electric motors fed by Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) have replaced gas turbines as drivers for gas compression applications. In Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants, unexpected downturns could be experienced in case of high torsional vibrations of power generations units. These torsional vibrations derive from the interaction among turbine-generator (TG) units and VFDs and are known as Sub-Synchronous Torsional Interactions (SSTIs). SSTIs can lead to instability when the overall electromechanical system lacks sufficient damping. In this scenario, electrical damping assessment is fundamental in order to ensure stability and reliable operation of an LNG plant. Negative electrical damping is strictly related to the negative incremental resistance behavior of the power converters and it is influen... [more]
A Study on Application of Recloser Operation Algorithm for Mixed Transmission System Based on Travelling Wave Method
Seung-Hyun Sohn, Gyu-Jung Cho, Chul-Hwan Kim
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: auto reclosing, combined transmission system, mixed transmission system, recloser operation algorithm, travelling wave
Recently, the operation of a mixed transmission system has increased due to rapid urbanization and the purpose of a good view. Therefore, a proper protection scheme for a mixed transmission system is required. Generally, when a fault occurs on a transmission line, auto reclosing is performed for the purpose of improving the continuity of service by clearing the fault and restoring the power system. However, the auto reclosing scheme should be applied to a mixed transmission system carefully because the mixed transmission system involves underground cable sections. When a fault occurs in the underground cable section, it is mostly a permanent fault. If auto reclosing is performed on a permanent fault condition, it may cause excessive overcurrent and switching surge, which can generate a serious impact on the whole transmission system and even cause an explosion. Due to this, many utilities worldwide do not allow auto reclosing or only apply it very restrictively on a mixed transmission... [more]
