Nikunj Gangar, Sandro Macchietto, Christos N. Markides
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat engine, heat pump, industrial energy efficiency, low-grade heat, ORC, organic Rankine cycle, Refining, technoeconomic feasibility, vapour compression, waste heat recovery
We assess the technoeconomic feasibility of onsite electricity and steam generation from recovered low-grade thermal energy in oil refineries using organic Rankine cycle (ORC) engines and mechanical vapour compression (MVC) heat pumps in various countries. The efficiencies of 34 ORC and 20 MVC current commercial systems are regressed against modified theoretical models. The resulting theoretical relations predict the thermal efficiency of commercial ORC engines within 4−5% and the coefficient of performance (COP) of commercial MVC heat pumps within 10−15%, on average. Using these models, the economic viability of ORC engines and MVC heat pumps is then assessed for 19 refinery streams as a function of heat source and sink temperatures, and the available stream thermal energy, for gas and electricity prices in selected countries. Results show that: (i) conversion to electrical power with ORC engines is, in general, economically feasible for heat-source temperatures >70 °C, however with h... [more]

Joanna Rucińska, Adrian Trząski
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: daylighting, dynamic daylight metrics, energy conservation, Energy Efficiency, lighting control, windows
This paper deals with the impact of the use of daylight on the overall energy demand for heating, cooling, and lighting in educational buildings. The energy performance of buildings is currently of the utmost importance as current European regulations, starting from 31st December 2020 impose that all new buildings must meet nearly zero-energy building requirements. This paper presents a study of the illuminance distribution in an educational room obtained from measurements and simulation results using two different models. One of the models, integrated with a thermal simulation software, was used to estimate the impact of daylight on the energy demand. The analysis included the use of various window types, lighting control system, reference point location, and daylight calculation model for a sample room in an educational building. Results of the analysis indicate that, due to the high share of lighting demand (reaching up to 78% of the primary energy balance), there is a need to take... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, energy intensity, energy management system, maritime transport, port
A container terminal is a high energy demanding organization. Giving priority to the investments that have a better impact on the minimization of energy consumption is a prime concern of the management board of the Port Authority and container terminals. This study presents a tool for the classification of the processes that take place in the port. The Relevant Use of Energy (RUE) index is described and applied to a case study, the Port Authority of Valencia, which is the main port of the Mediterranean in container traffic. Three different functional units have been discussed for the assessment: Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEU), cargo handled, and several container ships that operate in the port. The implementation of specific projects following the recommendation of the RUE Index validated the tool and allowed a reduction of the energy intensity of 29.5%, and a 40% reduction of the cost of energy per TEU between 2008 and 2016. However, there is still room for improvement, and projec... [more]

Josef Franko, Shengzhi Du, Stephan Kallweit, Enno Duelberg, Heiko Engemann
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: climbing robot, condition monitoring, low cost, odometry on wind turbines, weather independent operations, wind turbine maintenance
The maintenance of wind turbines is of growing importance considering the transition to renewable energy. This paper presents a multi-robot-approach for automated wind turbine maintenance including a novel climbing robot. Currently, wind turbine maintenance remains a manual task, which is monotonous, dangerous, and also physically demanding due to the large scale of wind turbines. Technical climbers are required to work at significant heights, even in bad weather conditions. Furthermore, a skilled labor force with sufficient knowledge in repairing fiber composite material is rare. Autonomous mobile systems enable the digitization of the maintenance process. They can be designed for weather-independent operations. This work contributes to the development and experimental validation of a maintenance system consisting of multiple robotic platforms for a variety of tasks, such as wind turbine tower and rotor blade service. In this work, multicopters with vision and LiDAR sensors for global... [more]
Renewable Energy Entrepreneurs: A Conceptual Framework
Avri Eitan, Gillad Rosen, Lior Herman, Itay Fishhendler
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: energy transition, entrepreneurial heterogeneity, entrepreneurs, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The adoption of renewable energies contributes to sustainable development worldwide. Entrepreneurs are key agents in facilitating their promotion, as they improve the mix of the means of production and thus transform renewable energy technologies into viable energy systems. Nonetheless, the literature tends to treat entrepreneurs as a homogeneous group, thus preventing comprehensive understanding of their motivations, behaviors, capabilities, and effects. This study addresses this research gap by identifying and categorizing the various characteristics of these entrepreneurs and developing an integrated classification method. Four examples of renewable energy entrepreneurs, in China, Denmark, Germany, and India, are analyzed according to the proposed classification method, while demonstrating their differences. Thus, through proposing a new analytical typology, this study improves our understanding of renewable energy entrepreneurs and their significant role in the promotion of renewab... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adsorbent, adsorption chiller, coefficient of performance, cooling capacity, isotherm characteristics, low quality waste heat, metal organic frameworks, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Simulation
In this study, the performance evaluation of an adsorption chiller (AD) system with three different adsorbents—silica-gel, aluminum fumarate, and FAM-Z01—was conducted to investigate the effects of adsorption isotherms and physical properties on the system’s performance. In addition, the performance evaluation of the AD system for a low inlet hot-water temperature of 60 °C was performed to estimate the performance of the system when operated by low quality waste heat or sustainable energy sources. For the simulation work, a two-bed type AD system is considered, and silica-gel, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), and ferro-aluminophosphate (FAPO, FAM-Z01) were employed as adsorbents. The simulation results were well matched with the laboratory-scale experimental results and the maximum coefficient of performance (COP) difference was 7%. The cooling capacity and COP of the AD system were investigated at different operating conditions to discuss the influences of the adsorbents on the system... [more]
Comparative and Relational Trajectory of Economic Growth and Greenhouse Gas Emission: Coupled or Decoupled?
Taewook Huh
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: CO2 emission, Fuzzy-set Ideal Type Analysis, GDP, international comparative level, low-carbon economy
This study looks at the global trajectory of the relationship between GDP (gross domestic product) and CO2 (carbon dioxide) emission in the time-series, comparative, and transitional point of view (from Y1992 to Y2014). It sets up a measurement framework and compares thirty-seven countries (thirty-six OECD countries and China) through the fuzzy-set ideal type analysis while focusing on the comparative and relational types. This research found that economic growth (GDP) and environmental problems (CO2 emissions) are tied together in a very solid path-dependent relationship. Particularly, the analysis of comparisons among OECD countries and China shows that the relationship between GDP and CO2 emissions is very firmly coupled, unlike the previous non-combination of one-dimensional statistics that are based on the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis. In short, it draws out and highlights the research implications that the existing conventions regarding the relationship between su... [more]
Efficient Routines for Obtaining Radiation View-Factor for Non-Uniform Horizons
Tariq Muneer, Stoyanka Ivanova
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: finite element analysis, reflected radiation, solar energy, view factor
There are a large number of engineering applications wherein estimation of radiation exchange between surfaces is required. One important part of the latter procedure is to obtain the so-called ‘view factor’ of the emitter−receiver combination. The principal aim of this article is to present finite-element based procedures to obtain view factor with good time efficiency. As such routines presented here compute the view factor between a non-uniform emitter field and the receiving surface. An example of this is ground-reflected solar radiation to thermal or photovoltaic collectors, the foreground itself being composed of surfaces that have wide-ranging reflectivities. Four routines have been presented here: one based on a uniform grid for emitting and receiving surfaces using a brute force approach (Uniform Populous Grid (UPG)), and another that used non-uniform grid for the receiving surface, where cells’ sizes increased in arithmetic progression as one withdraws from the common edge (N... March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), energy audit, photovoltaic (PV) demand for electricity and heat, thermal resistance
Based on a method to reduce energy consumption suggested in a real energy audit carried out in an industrial plant located in Poznań (city in Poland), the potential of using photovoltaic (PV) panels as wall cladding was analyzed, in order to reduce energy (electric and thermal) consumption and financial expenditure. The authors’ concept of using building integrated photovoltaic installation (BIPV) was presented and tested. This study checked whether the presence of PV modules would also affect heat transfer through the external wall of the building on which the installation is located. The analysis consisted of determining, for two variants, the heat transfer coefficients across the partition, in order to estimate the potential thermal energy savings. The first variant concerned the existing state, i.e., heat transfer through the external wall of the building, while the second included an additional partition layer in the form of photovoltaic panels. As a result, the use of panels as w... [more]
A Method for the Combined Estimation of Battery State of Charge and State of Health Based on Artificial Neural Networks
Angelo Bonfitto
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, artificial neural networks, battery, electric vehicles, estimation, hybrid vehicles, state of charge, state of health
This paper proposes a method for the combined estimation of the state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH) of batteries in hybrid and full electric vehicles. The technique is based on a set of five artificial neural networks that are used to tackle a regression and a classification task. In the method, the estimation of the SOC relies on the identification of the ageing of the battery and the estimation of the SOH depends on the behavior of the SOC in a recursive closed-loop. The networks are designed by means of training datasets collected during the experimental characterizations conducted in a laboratory environment. The lithium battery pack adopted during the study is designed to supply and store energy in a mild hybrid electric vehicle. The validation of the estimation method is performed by using real driving profiles acquired on-board of a vehicle. The obtained accuracy of the combined SOC and SOH estimator is around 97%, in line with the industrial requirements in the auto... [more]

Sebastian Gutierrez, Pedro M. Rodrigo, Jeronimo Alvarez, Arturo Acero, Alejandro Montoya
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building integration, Internet of Things, Mexico, photovoltaics, single-axis, sun tracker
Solar tracking systems enable increased efficiency of a photovoltaic system through a continuous adjustment of its position with respect to the sun, thus increasing the generation of electrical energy. The integration of photovoltaic solar tracking systems in buildings and houses enables the energy needs of users in a broader way to be covered. This integration is facilitated through the existence of technologies such as access to the Internet through Wi-Fi, which allows developing systems to be encompassed within the domain of the “Internet of Things” (IoT). In this study, a first-of-its-kind “open-loop” solar tracker was designed and developed, which executes the tracking algorithm in the Firebase web service and allows the exchange of data with said service through a NodeMCU development board, which has an integrated Wi-Fi module. After an experimental campaign in Aguascalientes, central Mexico, gains in terms of collected energy on average were measured at 29.9% in May compared to... [more]

Chin-Tan Lee, Shih-Cheng Horng
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: abnormal defects, cast-resin transformers, decision tree, hierarchical clustering, partial discharge, pattern recognition
Failures of cast-resin transformers not only reduce the reliability of power systems, but also have great effects on power quality. Partial discharges (PD) occurring in epoxy resin insulators of high-voltage electrical equipment will result in harmful effects on insulation and can cause power system blackouts. Pattern recognition of PD is a useful tool for improving the reliability of high-voltage electrical equipment. In this work, a fuzzy logic clustering decision tree (FLCDT) is proposed to diagnose the PD concerning the abnormal defects of cast-resin transformers. The FLCDT integrates a hierarchical clustering scheme with the decision tree. The hierarchical clustering scheme uses splitting attributes to divide the data set into suspended clusters according to separation matrices. The hierarchical clustering scheme is regarded as a preprocessing stage for classification using a decision tree. The whole data set is divided by the hierarchical clustering scheme into some suspended clu... [more]
Energy, Environmental and Economic Performance of an Urban Community Hybrid Distributed Energy System
Alberto Fichera, Elisa Marrasso, Maurizio Sasso, Rosaria Volpe
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: agent-based model, carbon dioxide emissions, distribution microgrid, primary energy saving
Energy systems face great challenges from both the supply and demand sides. Strong efforts have been devoted to investigate technological solutions aiming at overcoming the problems of fossil fuel depletion and the environmental issues due to the carbon emissions. Hybrid (activated by both renewables and fossil fuels) distributed energy systems can be considered a very effective and promising technology to replace traditional centralized energy systems. As a most peculiar characteristic, they reduce the use of fossil sources and transmission and distribution losses along the main power grid and contribute to electric peak shaving and partial-loads losses reduction. As a direct consequence, the transition from centralized towards hybrid decentralized energy systems leads to a new role for citizens, shifting from a passive energy consumer to active prosumers able to produce energy and distribute energy. Such a complex system needs to be carefully modelled to account for the energy intera... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: agricultural waste, enthalpy-entropy compensation theory, mathematical modeling, sorption isotherms, thermodynamic properties, woody biomass
Experimental and mathematical modeling of the moisture sorption isotherms for biomass pellets during storage is performed in this study. The tested pellets are a mixture of 50% wood: spruce or pine, and 50% switchgrass agricultural biomass. Storage conditions, i.e., temperature and humidity, are tested by varying the environment conditions in a conditioning chamber. The experimental results show that the moisture sorption isotherms are not affected by the temperature. Nevertheless, the equilibrium moisture content depends on the kind of the tested pellets. Mathematical modeling of the experimental isotherms is performed using four common models: the Oswin, GAB, Henderson and Peleg models. The Oswin model is defined as the most appropriate model to predict the moisture sorption isotherms of the spruce−switchgrass pellets. It presents a coefficient of determination equal to 0.998, a standard error around 0.049 and a chi-square approaching 0.007. On the other hand, Henderson and GAB model... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: battery aging, energy management, Genetic Algorithm, global optimization, particle swarm algorithm, plug-in electric vehicles, state of health
The performance of lithium-ion batteries will inevitably degrade during the high frequently charging/discharging load applied in electric vehicles. For hybrid electric vehicles, battery aging not only declines the performance and reliability of the battery itself, but it also affects the whole energy efficiency of the vehicle since the engine has to participate more. Therefore, the energy management strategy is required to be adjusted during the entire lifespan of lithium-ion batteries to maintain the optimality of energy economy. In this study, tests of the battery performances under thirteen different aging stages are involved and a parameters-varying battery model that represents the battery degradation is established. The influences of battery aging on energy consumption of a given plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) are analyzed quantitatively. The results indicate that the variations of capacity and internal resistance are the main factors while the polarization and open circu... [more]

Keywords: biomass densification, briquette durability, mechanical compaction, multivariate tests of significance, processing factors
Using the uniaxial compression process, the mechanical behaviour of densified briquettes from ground sunflower stalks and hazelnut husks was studied under different forces (100, 200, 300, and 400 kN), particle sizes (0, 3, 6, and 10 mm), and moisture contents (sunflower; 11.23%, 14.44%, and 16.89% w.b.) and (hazelnut; 12.64%, 14.83%, and 17.34% w.b.) at a constant speed of 5 mm min−1. For each test, the biomass material was compacted at a constant volume of 28.27 × 10−5 m3 using a 60 mm-diameter vessel. Determined parameters included densification energy (J), hardness (kN·mm−1), analytical densification energy (J), briquette volume (m3), bulk density of materials (kg·m−3), briquette bulk density (kg·m−3), and briquette volume energy (J·m−3). The ANOVA multivariate tests of significance results showed that for ground sunflower stalk briquettes, the force and particle size interactions had no significant effect (p > 0.05) on the above-mentioned parameters compared to the categorical fact... March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: higher order harmonics, idling, inductance, magnetic biasing, magnetic flux, motor resistance, suspended rotor, winding
The control methods of asynchronous motors have changed during past decades. In the past, asynchronous motors were connected to grid directly. Later, thyristors as switching element-based frequency converters for asynchronous motors have appeared. Today, asynchronous motors are controlled with variable speed drives that are frequency converters consisting of IGBT power modules as switching elements that form the output voltage for asynchronous motors. Because of IGBT’s high switching speed of around few kilohertz, higher order harmonics appear in the output voltage. Their influence was not analyzed in the past as the methodology of asynchronous motor winding resistance measurement was under development. In this article, a new methodology of motor resistance measurement for mass production is introduced. The resistance—compared to higher order harmonics values between the windings of benchmark and tested motors—gives an ability to faster and more accurately determine a motor’s character... [more]

Electric Vehicles (EVs) play a significant role in the reduction of CO2 emissions and other health-threatening air pollutants Accordingly, several research studies are introduced owing to replacing conventional gasoline-powered vehicles with battery-powered EVs. However, the ultra-fast charging (UFC) of the battery pack or the rapid recharging of the battery requires specific demands, including both: the EV battery and the influence on the power grid. In this regard, advanced power electronics technologies are emerging significantly to replace the currently existing gas station infrastructures with the EV charging stations to move from conventional charging (range of hours) to UFC (range of minutes). Among these power electronics conversion systems, the DC-DC conversion stage plays an essential role in supplying energy to the EV via charging the EV’s battery. Accordingly, this paper aims to present possible architectures of connecting multiple Dual Active Bridge (DAB) units as the DC-D... [more]
Forecasting the Structure of Energy Production from Renewable Energy Sources and Biofuels in Poland

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: climate policy, Energy, forecast, renewable energy sources, the European Green Deal
The world’s economic development depends on access to cheap energy sources. So far, energy has been obtained mainly from conventional sources like coal, gas and oil. Negative climate changes related to the high emissions of the economy based on the combustion of hydrocarbons and the growing public awareness have made it necessary to look for new ecological energy sources. This condition can be met by renewable energy sources. Both social pressure and international activities force changes in the structure of sources from which energy is produced. This also applies to the European Union countries, including Poland. There are no scientific studies in the area of forecasting energy production from renewable energy sources for Poland. Therefore, it is reasonable to investigate this subject since such a forecast can have a significant impact on investment decisions in the energy sector. At the same time, it must be as reliable as possible. That is why a modern method was used for this purpo... [more]

Keywords: Finite difference method, Finned heat sink, Heater, Natural convection, Passive cooling system, Porous medium
Cooling of heat-generating elements is a challenging problem in engineering. In this article, the transient free convection of a temperature-dependent viscosity liquid inside the porous cavity with copper radiator and the heat-generating element is studied using mathematical modeling techniques. The vertical and top walls of the chamber are kept at low constant temperature, while the bottom wall is kept adiabatic. The working fluid is a heat-conducting liquid with temperature-dependent viscosity. A mathematical model is developed based on dimensionless stream function, vorticity, and temperature variables. The governing properties are the variable viscosity, geometric parameters of the radiator, and size of thermally insulated strip on vertical surfaces of the cavity. The effect of these parameters on the energy transport and circulation patterns are analyzed numerically. Based on the numerical results obtained, recommendations are given on the optimal values of the governing parameter... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: high step-up DC–DC converter, interleaved operation, three-winding coupled inductor
A novel interleaved high step-up DC−DC converter applied for applications in photovoltaic systems is proposed in this paper. The proposed configuration is composed of three-winding coupled inductors, voltage multiplier cells and a clamp circuit. The step-up voltage gain is effectively increased, owing to the voltage-stack and voltage-lift techniques using the voltage multiplier cells. The leakage inductor energy is recycled by the clamp circuit to avoid the voltage surge on a power switch. The low-voltage-rated power switches with low on-state resistances and costs can be used to decrease the conduction losses and increase the conversion efficiency when the voltage stresses of power switches for the converter are considerably lower than the high output voltage. The reverse-recovery problems of diodes are mitigated by the leakage inductances of the coupled inductors. Moreover, both the input current ripple and the current stress on each power switch are reduced, owing to the interleaved... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: agent quantity, discharge rate, gas fire suppression, inert gas agents, ventilation rate
Inert gas agents have the potential to be widely used in fire suppression systems due to health and safety concerns associated with active chemicals. To suppress fire while minimizing hypoxic effects in an occupied area, the discharge quantity of inert gas agents should be carefully designed to dilute the oxygen concentration to a specific threshold level. In this study, the general expressions between oxygen concentration, the discharge rate of inert gas agents, and the ventilation rate of the air-agent mixture are derived first. Then, explicit formulas to calculate the discharge/ventilation rate and the required quantity of inert gas agents are given if the discharge rate and ventilation rate both are constants. To investigate the dilution and fire extinguishing efficiencies of inert gas agents, two scenarios with a discharge of inert gas agents into an enclosure are modeled using the Fire Dynamic Simulator (FDS). The simulation results show that the average oxygen mass fraction appr... [more]
Effect of Single-Row and Double-Row Passive Vortex Generators on the Deep Dynamic Stall of a Wind Turbine Airfoil
Chengyong Zhu, Tongguang Wang, Jie Chen, Wei Zhong
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep dynamic stall, passive vortex generators, URANS simulations, wind turbine airfoil
Passive vortex generators (VGs) have been widely applied on wind turbines to boost the aerodynamic performance. Although VGs can delay the onset of static stall, the effect of VGs on dynamic stall is still incompletely understood. Therefore, this paper aims at investigating the deep dynamic stall of NREL S809 airfoil controlled by single-row and double-row VGs. The URANS method with VGs fully resolved is used to simulate the unsteady airfoil flow. Firstly, both single-row and double-row VGs effectively suppress the flow separation and reduce the fluctuations in aerodynamic forces when the airfoil pitches up. The maximum lift coefficient is therefore increased beyond 40%, and the onset of deep dynamic stall is also delayed. This suggests that deep dynamic-stall behaviors can be properly controlled by VGs. Secondly, there is a great difference in aerodynamic performance between single-row and double-row VGs when the airfoil pitches down. Single-row VGs severely reduce the aerodynamic pit... [more]
Current Harmonics Controller for Reduction of Acoustic Noise, Vibrations and Torque Ripple Caused by Cogging Torque in PM Motors under FOC Operation

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acoustic noise, cogging torque, cogging torque reduction, current harmonics controller, PM motor, torque ripple, vibrations
This article presents an effective algorithm to reduce acoustic noise, vibrations and torque ripple caused by cogging torque in three-phase Permanent Magnet (PM) motors under Field Oriented Control (FOC) operation. Cogging torque profile is suitably included into q-axis current reference, which must be then precisely tracked in order to mitigate acoustic noise, vibrations, torque ripple and speed ripple caused by cogging torque. Conventional FOC structure has been extended by a Current Harmonics Controller (CHC) to achieve precise control of dq current harmonics for all operation speeds, which is crucial to reduce impact of cogging torque and increase performance of electric drive with PM motor. Effectiveness of proposed control technique is experimentally verified by vibrations and acoustic noise measurements.

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: deflection, magnetic field and torque, permanent magnet motor, three-degree-of-freedom
This paper proposes a novel layered permanent magnet motor (N-LPM), which is based on a three-degree-of-freedom (3-DOF) permanent magnet motor. Compared with the former, the improved N-LPM air gap magnetic density, torque and structure stability have been significantly improved. The proposed N-LPM has three layers of stator along the axis direction, and each layer of stator has three-phase winding. In order to calculate the magnetic field and torque distribution of the N-LPM, an analytical method (AM) is proposed. For performance verification and accurate calculation, finite-element analysis (FEA) is adopted. The two kinds of motors before and after the improvement are compared, and their magnetic field, torque and stability are analyzed. The optimization rate is defined to evaluate the performance of the motor before and after improvement. The results show that the radial flux density, rotation torque, deflection torque and the volume optimization rate of the permanent magnet of the i... [more]
