Flexibility Assessment of Multi-Energy Residential and Commercial Buildings
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: CO2 emissions, commercial buildings, flexibility optimization, flexibility quantification, HVAC systems, multi-energy systems, network operation, residential buildings
With the growing concern about decreasing CO 2 emissions, renewable energy sources are being vastly integrated in the energy systems worldwide. This will bring new challenges to the network operators, which will need to find sources of flexibility to cope with the variable-output nature of these technologies. Demand response and multi-energy systems are being widely studied and considered as a promising solution to mitigate possible problems that may occur in the energy systems due to the large-scale integration of renewables. In this work, an optimal model to manage the resources and loads within residential and commercial buildings was developed, considering consumers preferences, electrical network restrictions and CO 2 emissions. The flexibility that these buildings can provide was analyzed and quantified. Additionally, it was shown how this model can be used to solve technical problems in electrical networks, comparing the performance of two scenarios of flexibilit... [more]

Modeling of the Anaerobic Digestion of Organic Wastes: Integration of Heat Transfer and Biochemical Aspects
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biogas, organic municipal solid wastes modeling, reactor operating temperature
The aim of this work is the development of a simulation model for the anaerobic digestion process of source-sorted organic fractions of municipal solid wastes. In particular, a detailed model simulating both biological and thermal behaviors of the process was developed. The biological model is based on the Anaerobic Digestion Model 1 (ADM1), which allows one to evaluate the dynamic trends of the concentrations of the main components and the biogas production as a function of the digester operating temperature. The work also includes a detailed thermal model which is developed considering the geometrical and structural features of the digester. The thermal behavior of the digester was also modeled, considering a purposely designed heat exchanger immersed inside the digester. Therefore, the thermal behavior of the process was evaluated by the well-known heat exchange equations and thermal energy balances. The combination of these two models is used to analyze the different possible opera... [more]

CO2 Electrochemical Reduction by Exohedral N-Pyridine Decorated Metal-Free Carbon Nanotubes
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), exohedral chemical grafting, metal-free electrocatalysts, multi-walled carbon nanotubes, pyridine nuclei
Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to fuels and chemicals represents nowadays one of the most challenging solutions for renewable energy storage and utilization. Among the possible reaction pathways, CO2-to-CO conversion is the first (2e−) reduction step towards the production of a key-feedstock that holds great relevance for chemical industry. In this report we describe the electrocatalytic CO2-to-CO reduction by a series of tailored N-decorated carbon nanotubes to be employed as chemoselective metal-free electrocatalysts. The choice of an exohedral functionalization tool for the introduction of defined N-groups at the outer surface of carbon nanomaterials warrants a unique control on N-configuration and electronic charge density distribution at the dangling heterocycles. A comparative electrochemical screening of variably N-substituted carbon nanomaterials in CO2RR together with an analysis of the electronic charge density distribution at each heterocycle have suggested t... Analysis of Enhanced Pool Boiling Heat Transfer on Laser—Textured Surfaces
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: boiling heat transfer, enhancement, laser texturing
Enhancement of pool boiling heat transfer can be attained with a number of passive and active techniques. The paper experimentally analyses the impact of laser treatment of the copper surfaces on pool boiling heat transfer of distilled water and ethyl alcohol. The samples were modified with a laser beam to produce longitudinal grooves of highly developed microstructures in the laser textured area. Specimens of different groove depths, groove widths and micro-fin widths were produced. The results indicate a significant influence of laser processing on heat flux dissipated from the surfaces and heat transfer enhancement for all the samples tested. The experimental results have been generalized in the form of a heat flux correlation based on a modified model of enhanced pool boiling heat transfer.

A Microseismicity-Based Method of Rockburst Intensity Warning in Deep Tunnels in the Initial Period of Microseismic Monitoring
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: clustering analysis, deep tunnel, microseismicity, rock mechanics, rockburst intensity, warning
Rockburst disasters in deep tunnels cause serious casualties and economic losses. It is a great challenge to make a warning for rockbursts in geotechnical engineering. In this work, a microseismicity-based rockburst intensity warning method is proposed that is suitable for use in deep tunnels in the initial period of microseismic (MS) monitoring. The method first involves collecting information on a sample of no more than five cases. Then, the event to be analyzed is combined with the sample events and subjected to cluster analysis. Finally, a rockburst intensity warning is generated according to the results of the cluster analysis or after a second cluster analysis. It is a comprehensive, multi-parameter rockburst intensity warning method that only needs a few rockburst cases for input which makes it suitable in the initial period of MS monitoring. The method also incorporates the novel idea of a second cluster analysis. An engineering application based on deep tunnels in the Jinping... [more]

The Potential of Utilizing Buildings’ Foundations as Thermal Energy Storage (TES) Units from Solar Plate Collectors
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: building foundation TES, building heating load, COMSOL Multiphysics, solar collectors, thermal energy storage (TES), TRNSYS
Underfloor heating systems provide comfort due to the natural heat flow distribution by a network of pipes, conventionally connected to a heat pump operating at low temperatures. To this extent, a renewable energy source could be an alternative solution. Acting as a case to investigate such systems, the Mediterranean island of Cyprus with a plethora of sunny days points to solar energy as the obvious solution. In this study, solar collector systems are recruited to supply the required heat for a typical Cypriot house, with the building’s foundation acting as a thermal energy system (TES) unit. The heat supply to the building can then be distributed with natural convection from the TES. The solar collectors and the building’s foundation system are studied with the aid of two software programs, namely TRNSYS and COMSOL Multiphysics. The former is used for the calculation of the heating and cooling load of the house as well as to estimate the energy provided by the flat plate solar collec... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: classifications, coal-bearing tight sandstone, formation mechanisms, occurrence, Ordos Basin, organic-rich clasts
The detailed characteristics and formation mechanisms of organic-rich clasts (ORCs) in the Upper Paleozoic tight sandstone in the northeastern margin of the Ordos Basin were analyzed through 818-m-long drilling cores and logging data from 28 wells. In general, compared with soft-sediment clasts documented in other sedimentary environments, organic-rich clasts in coal-bearing tight sandstone have not been adequately investigated in the literature. ORCs are widely developed in various sedimentary environments of coal-bearing sandstone, including fluvial channels, crevasse splays, tidal channels, sand flats, and subaqueous debris flow deposits. In addition to being controlled by the water flow energy and transportation processes, the fragmentation degree and morphology of ORCs are also related to their content of higher plants organic matter. The change in water flow energy during transportation makes the ORCs show obvious mechanical depositional differentiation. Four main types of ORC ca... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: distribution systems, fault location, state estimation
This paper presents a new linear state estimation model based on a current summation load flow method for three-phase distribution systems. The developed estimator may be applied to both the supervision of distribution systems under normal operating conditions and the fault location in cases of low and high impedance faults. Our studies were conducted using a real distribution feeder. For fault location analysis, the system was modeled using the ATP (alternative transient program) in order to emulate measurements of voltages and currents at the substation, and voltage magnitudes registered by other meters during the fault. We used the MATLAB™ software to process the algorithms. The main contributions that arose after integrating the current method into system supervision in case of network failures under normal operating conditions and the fault location are as follows: (i) estimation of system losses; (ii) modeling of loads in real time to consider their contributions in the fault loc... A Passive Control Method of Hub Corner Stall in a 1.5-Stage Axial Compressor under Low-Speed Conditions
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: compressor margin, hub corner stall, off-design speed, partial clearance
Since the use of the compressor of a ship gas turbine is unavoidable at a low-speed operation, the flow field characteristics and stall mechanism at off-design speeds are important aspects for compressor designers. In this study, the first 1.5 stages of an eight-stage compressor are numerically simulated. The mechanism of compressor rotor instability at lower speeds is identified. The characteristic lines of compressors with various partial clearance are calculated at low speed (0.6 N). The flow field of the same outlet pressure (near stall point of the original compressor without clearance) is compared and analyzed. The results show that, at the near stall point, the suction surface separation and backflow occur in the main flow of the rotor top. It develops along the blade span and finally blocks the flow passage of the rotor, which results in the compressor stall. At the same time, the stall also occurs at the corner of the stator hub. In this paper, the characteristics of partial c... [more]

Magnetron Sputtered Electron Blocking Layer as an Efficient Method to Improve Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell Performance
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dye-sensitized solar cells, electron blocking layer, magnetron sputtering, photovoltaics, solar cells
The main efficiency loss is caused by an intensive recombination process at the interface of fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) and electrolyte in dye-sensitized solar cells. Electrons from the photoanode can be injected back to the redox electrolyte and, thus, can reduce the short circuit current. To avoid this, the effect of the electron blocking layer (EBL) was studied. An additional thin film of magnetron sputtered TiO2 was deposited directly onto the FTO glass. The obtained EBL was characterized by atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, optical profilometry, energy dispersive spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometry. The results of the current−voltage characteristics showed that both the short circuit current (Isc) and fill factor (FF) increased. Compared to traditional dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) architecture, the power conversion efficiency (η) increased from 4.67% to 6.07% for samples with a 7 × 7 mm2 active area and from 2.62% to 3.06%... Flow Boiling of Low-Pressure Water in Microchannels of Large Aspect Ratio
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: flow boiling, heat sink, microchannel, numerical simulation
Flow boiling heat transfer in microchannels can provide a high cooling rate, while maintaining a uniform wall temperature, which has been extensively studied as an attractive solution for the thermal management of high-power electronics. The depth-to-width ratio of the microchannel is an important parameter, which not only determines the heat transfer area but also has dominant effect on the heat transfer mechanisms. In the present study, numerical simulations based on the volume of fraction models are performed on the flow boiling in very deep microchannels. The effects of the depth-to-width ratio on the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop are discussed. The bubble behavior and heat transfer characteristics are analyzed to explain the mechanism of heat transfer enhancement. The results show the very deep microchannels can effectively enhance the heat transfer, lower the temperature rise and show promising applications in the thermal management of high-power electronics.

Subject: System Identification
Keywords: cloud computing, edge intelligence, fault identification, fault localization, IoT, MQTT, power distribution systems
Power restoring time in power distribution systems (PDS) can be minimized by using efficient fault localization techniques. This paper proposes a novel, robust and scalable cloud based internet of things (IoT) solution for identification and localization of faults in PDS. For this purpose, a new algorithm is developed that can detect single and multiple simultaneous faults in the presence of single and multiple device or sensor failures. The algorithm has utilized a zone based approach that divides a PDS into different zones. A current sensing device (CSD) was deployed at the boundary of a zone. The function of CSD is to provide time synchronized current measurements and communicate with a cloud server through an edge device (ED). Another contribution of this research work is the unique implementation of context aware policy (CAP) in ED. Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: agglomeration effects, energy policy, location, national and regional economic effects, nuclear power station, Poland, spatial Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) modelling
Poland is the most coal-dependent economy and one of the biggest polluters in the EU. In order to alleviate this problem, meet CO2 emission requirements set by EU, and improve the country’s energy security, Poland decided to introduce nuclear power to its energy mix. So far, several potential locations for nuclear power plants have been officially proposed, mainly based on technical parameters, but no comparisons of the economic impact of such locations have been considered. Consequently, the main goal of this paper is to compare the national and regional economic effects of investments in nuclear power plants—for both the construction and exploitation phases—in the four most probable locations, which are similarly beneficial from a technical point of view. In order to simulate these effects, the spatial recursive dynamic Computable General Equilibrium model was calibrated until 2050 including agglomeration effects and featuring the regional economies of all Polish regions. March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: cellulase, coffee husk, life cycle assessment (LCA), solid-state fermentation (SSF), submerged fermentation (SmF), waste
This article studies the environmental impacts of cellulase production by using a comparative attributional life cycle assessment (LCA) of two different scenarios of production. The first one is the commonly used submerged fermentation (SmF) using a pure substrate (cellulose powder) and a specific microorganism (Trichoderma reesei). The second scenario considers a novel system to produce enzymes and simultaneously treat a waste using the solid-state fermentation (SSF) process of coffee husk (CH) used as substrate. Experimental data were used in this scenario. The complete production process was studied for these two technologies including the fermentation phase and the complete downstream of cellulase. Life cycle inventory (LCI) data were collected from the database EcoInvent v3 (SimaPro 8.5) modified by data from literature and pilot scale experiments. The environmental impacts of both production systems revealed that those of SmF were higher than those of SSF. A sensitivity analysis... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cyclic steam stimulation, edge-bottom water reservoirs, factor analysis, heavy oil, hydrochemical characteristics, source discrimination of produced water, weight coefficients
Heavy oil reservoirs with edge-bottom water represent a huge portion of the world’s reserves, and the effective development of such reservoirs with cyclic steam stimulation (CSS) is significant for the petroleum supply. However, the water cut of some CSS wells increases, and production decreases, with the increase of circulation turns. Discerning the source of the produced water is the basis of targeted treatment measures. In this paper, a new model is established for discriminating the source of produced water from CSS wells in edge-bottom water reservoirs. The model combines traditional hydrochemical characteristics analysis and factor analysis, and considers the quality change in injected water. The coefficient of formation water and injected water in produced water can thus be obtained. In addition, the normal distribution method is used to further divide interlayer water and edge-bottom water. A Novel Optimal Power Control for a City Transit Hybrid Bus Equipped with a Partitioned Hydrogen Fuel Cell Stack
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: flywheel energy storage system, hybrid power unit, partitioned hydrogen fuel cell, urban transit bus
The development of more sustainable and zero-emissions collective transport solutions could play a very important measure in the near future within smart city policies. This paper tries to give a contribution to this aim, proposing a novel approach to fuel cell vehicle design and operation. Traditional difficulties experienced in fuel cell transient operation are, in fact, normally solved in conventional vehicle prototypes, through the hybridization of the propulsion system and with the complete fulfillment of transients in road energy demand through a high-capacity onboard energy storage device. This makes it normally necessary to use Li-ion battery solutions, accepting their restrictions in terms of weight, costs, energy losses, limited lifetime, and environmental constraints.
