Energy Consumption Depending on the Durability of Pellets Formed from Sawdust with an Admixture of FFP2 Masks
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: COVID-19, energy consumption, mechanical durability, particle density, wood pellets
At present, we are still feeling the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in connection with the huge amount of waste generated. However, the reuse of the produced waste in other processes requires energy consumption. This article deals with the reuse of face masks FFP2, which were added as an admixture to spruce or beech sawdust and then processed into pellets. During the production process of the pellets, energy consumption was measured and further converted to one ton of pellets, and also the consumption was reflected in the price of electricity. After storage, the mechanical durability and dimensions of the individual pellets were measured, and their density was calculated. Based on the results, it can be concluded that spruce pellets with 10% face masks FFP2 (consumption 747.41 kWh; durability 97.53%) and beech pellets with 5% face masks FFP2 (consumption 721.27 kWh; durability 97.38%) achieved higher values of mechanical durability and also consumed more energy than the remaining sam... Augmentation of DFIG and PMSG Wind Turbines Transient Performance Using Different Fault Current Limiters
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DFIG, fault current limiters, fault ride through, grid fault, PMSG, wind energy
The technology of variable speed wind turbines is very promising in renewable power generation. It is imperative for wind turbines to gain control after grid disturbances and contribute to the stability of power grids as part of the requirements of grid codes set by grid operators in operating wind farms. Fault current limiters (FCLs) are capable of augmenting the performance of wind turbines during grid disturbances. In this article, the augmentation of the Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) and the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) wind turbines, which are the two most popular variable speed wind turbines, is presented. The evaluation of both wind turbines was performed considering the Series Dynamic Braking Resistor (SDBR), Bridge Fault Current Limiter (BFCL) and the Capacitive Bridge Fault Current Limiter (CBFCL). The modeling of the FCLs in the wind turbines was derived for steady state and grid disturbances so that their dynamic behavior could be understood. The gr... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bearing diagnostics, cyclo-non-stationary signal, envelope analysis, resampling, rolling-element bearing modelling
The generation of synthetic vibration signals enables the testing of novel machine diagnostic methods without the costly introduction of real failures. One of major goals of vibration-based condition monitoring is the early detection of bearing faults. This paper presents a novel modeling technique based on the combination of the known mechanical properties of a modeled object (phenomenological part) and observation of a real object (behavioral part). The model uses the real pulse response of bearing housing, along with the external instantaneous machine speed profile. The presented method is object-oriented, so it is applicable to a large group of machinery.

Measurement of the Convective Heat Transfer Coefficient and Temperature of Vehicle-Integrated Photovoltaic Modules
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: convective heat transfer coefficient, temperature change rate, vehicle-integrated photovoltaics
To improve the thermal design of vehicle-integrated photovoltaic (VIPV) modules, this study clarifies the characteristics of the convective heat transfer coefficient h between the vehicle roof surface and the surrounding air with respect to vehicle speed. Experiments on two types of vehicles with different body shapes indicate that h is strongly affected by vehicle speed, and it is also affected by body shape depending on the position on the roof. Empirical equations for approximating h as a function of vehicle speed and position on the vehicle roof are derived from the experimental datasets, and the differences between the equations derived herein and traditional equations that have been used for the heat transfer analysis of conventional stationary photovoltaic (PV) modules are clarified. Furthermore, the temperature change characteristics of the VIPV module were measured experimentally, confirming that h is the dominant factor causing the high temperature change rate of the VIPV mod... Steam Cavity Expansion Model for Steam Flooding in Deep Heavy Oil Reservoirs
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: deep heavy oil reservoir, heat energy loss, steam cavity expansion model, vertical well steam flooding, wellbore heat loss
Steam flooding is crucial for the development of heavy oil reservoirs, and the development of the steam cavity significantly determines the efficiency of steam flooding. Previous studies have elucidated the concept of steam overburden and pseudomobility ratio; however, the thermal energy loss in deep heavy oil reservoirs during steam injection needs further investigation. Therefore, in this study, the vapour−liquid interface theory and mathematical integration were used to establish a steam cavity expansion model. The wellbore heat loss rate coefficient, steam overlay, and pseudomobility ratio were used to accurately describe the development of the steam cavity in deep heavy oil reservoirs. The proposed model was experimentally validated, and it was observed that the model could accurately reflect the actual mine conditions. In addition, the pressure gradient distribution of the steam belt and the heat dissipation areas of the top and bottom layers of the steam cavity were evaluated. T... [more]

A Comparative Study of Robust MPC and Stochastic MPC of Wind Power Generation System
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: nonlinear system, predictive control, probabilistic constraint, uncertain system, wind power generation system
In this paper, a complete comparison analysis of two advanced control algorithms, namely robust model predictive control (MPC) and stochastic MPC, is performed in order to optimize the operation of a wind power generation system (WPGS). The power maximization often conflicts with the mechanical load experienced by the turbine in the full-load region (i.e., the higher the power extracted, the higher the load) under the wind speed disturbance, thereby leading to high maintenance cost resulting from the fatigue damage. Thus, a typical 5 MW wind turbine operating in a high-speed region is considered to guarantee system security and economy. The robust MPC is designed by utilizing the min−max framework to track steady-state optimum operating reference trajectory with the deterministic constraint of output power, while the stochastic MPC is constructed by incorporating the invariant set theory to also ensure the system security subjecting to the probabilistic constraint of output power. Experimental Studies of the Effect of Air Filter Pressure Drop on the Composition and Emission Changes of a Compression Ignition Internal Combustion Engine
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air filter pressure drop, emission of toxic exhaust components, engine power, exhaust components, internal combustion engines
This paper presents an experimental evaluation of the effect of air filter pressure drop on the composition of exhaust gases and the operating parameters of a modern internal combustion Diesel engine. A literature analysis of the methods of reducing the emission of toxic components of exhaust gases from SI engines was conducted. It has been shown that the air filter pressure drop, increasing during the engine operation, causes a significant decrease in power output and an increase in fuel consumption, as well as smoke emission of Diesel engines with the classical injection system with a piston (sectional) in-line injection pump. It has also been shown, on the basis of a few literature studies, that the increase in the resistance of air filter flow causes a change in the composition of car combustion engines, with the effect of the air filter pressure drop on turbocharged engines being insignificant. Multi-Model-Based Predictive Control for Divisional Regulation in the Direct Air-Cooling Condenser
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: backpressure, direct air-cooling condenser, divisional regulation, multi-model, plume recirculation
Flow distortions caused by ambient wind can have complex negative effects on the performance of direct air-cooling condensers, which use air as their cooling medium. A control-oriented model of the direct air-cooling condenser model, considering fan volumetric effectiveness and plume recirculation rate, was developed, and its linearization model was derived. The influences of fan volumetric effectiveness and plume recirculation rate on backpressure were analyzed, and the optimal backpressure was calculated. To improve both the transient performance and steady-state energy saving of the condenser, a multi-model-based predictive control strategy was proposed to divisionally adjust the fan array. Four division schemes of the direct air-cooling fan array constituted the local models, and in each division scheme, axial fans were divided into three groups according to the wind direction: windward fans, leeward fans, and other fans. The simulation results showed that the turbine backpressure... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: acoustic emission, mesoscopic crack propagation, rock fatigue life, sandstone
Even when the maximum stress is less than the peak stress under conventional loading, fatigue failure of rock is likely to occur, thereby showing its unique characteristics. The present study summarized the factors affecting rock fatigue life from the perspective of phenomenology and studied the fatigue damage process of rock from the microscopic perspective. However, the meso-mechanical mechanism of fatigue−tension failure of rocks is still not very clear, and there are few studies on rock fatigue life that use meso-crack propagation models. In this paper, a mesoscopic model considering wing crack propagation is introduced to examine the fatigue failure of sandstone. A fatigue life prediction formula of sandstone was deduced via a combination with the Paris formula. This formula can quantitatively characterize the impact of upper limit stress and lower limit stress on the fatigue life of sandstone and explain the reason why upper limit stress has a greater influence on the fatigue pro... February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: axial flux permanent magnet motor, finite-element method, Genetic Algorithm, multi-objective optimization, response surface method
The stator coreless axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) motor with a compact structure, low torque ripple, and high efficiency is particularly suitable as a motor for electric propulsion systems. However, it still requires great effort to design an AFPM motor with higher torque density and lower torque ripple. In this paper, a stator coreless multidisc AFPM (SCM-AFPM) motor with a three-rotor and two-stator topology is proposed. To reduce rotor mass and increase torque density, the proposed SCM-AFPM motor adopts the hybrid permanent magnets (PMs) array with Halbach PMs in the two-terminal rotor and the conventional PMs array in the middle rotor. In addition, a multi-objective optimization model combining response surface method (RSM) and genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed and applied to the proposed SCM-AFPM motor. With the help of the three-dimensional finite-element analysis (3-D FEA), it is found that the torque ripple of the optimized SCM-AFPM motor is 4.73%, while it is 6.21% for t... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: economic growth, productivity, renewables energy
The threat of the negative consequences of global warming makes the discussion about the relationship between economic growth, productivity, and increasing renewable energy involvement an important topic. Hence, the aim of this study is to analyze the impact of renewable energy and energy supply on economic growth and productivity at the national level using stochastic frontier analysis and the aggregate production function framework. In doing so, we analyzed a panel of annual data from 133 countries from 2008 to 2014. We apply a generalized stochastic frontier model, which allows us to differentiate between persistent and transient inefficiency, as well as individual effects. Our results indicate a threshold level in terms of a country’s development that needs to be obtained to benefit from increasing renewable energy involvement over time. However, if this threshold level is obtained, productivity gains are evident. We also found that the role of the energy supply in aggregate produc... [more]

Energy-Efficient Electro-Hydraulic Power Source Driven by Variable-Speed Motor
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cleaner production of industry, electro-hydraulic, pressure control, variable-speed drives
Hydraulic systems are widely used in industry due to their small size-to-power ratios and their ability to produce very large linear force and torque. In traditional hydraulic systems, a variable pump driven by an electric motor is often used as power source. In these systems, the electro-hydraulic power source always operates at its rated speed, causing lots of noise and low energy consumption, especially in no-load and light-load conditions. These problems can be solved by changing the speed of the electric motor according to the load state of the electro-hydraulic power source. In order to improve the energy efficiency of the electro-hydraulic power source and realize pressure and flow control on the basis of low cost, this paper presents the power-source structure of a variable-displacement pressure-compensated pump driven by a variable-speed electric motor; this controls the flow by adjusting the electric motor speed and controls the pressure with the variable-displacement pressur... Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: flexible FC, Grasshopper project, MW-scale PEM FC, partial load, scale-up, warm-up
The transition toward high shares of non-programmable renewable energy sources in the power grid requires an increase in the grid flexibility to guarantee grid reliability and stability. This work, developed within the EU project Grasshopper, identifies hydrogen Fuel Cell (FC) power plants, based on low temperature PEM cells, as a source of flexibility for the power grid. A dynamic numerical model of the flexible FC system is developed and tested against experimental data from a 100-kW pilot plant, built within the Grasshopper project. The model is then applied to assess the flexible performance of a 1 MW system in order to optimize the scale-up of the pilot plant to the MW-size. Simulations of load-following operation show the flexibility of the plant, which can ramp up and down with a ramp rate depending only on an externally imposed limit. Keywords: directional pilot protection, line-commutated converter and modular multilevel converter high-voltage direct-current, S-transform, traveling wave
In this paper, the traveling wave protection issue of a hybrid high-voltage direct-current transmission line based on the line-commutated converter and modular multilevel converter is investigated. Generally, traveling wave protection based on voltage variation criterion, voltage variation rate criterion and current variation rate criterion is applied on hybrid high-voltage direct-current transmission lines as primary protection. There are two issues that should be addressed: (i) it has no fault direction identification capability which may cause wrong operation regarding external faults; and (ii) it does not consider the difference between line-commutated converter based rectifier station topology and modular multilevel converter based inverter station topology. Therefore, a novel traveling wave directional pilot protection principle for the hybrid high-voltage direct-current transmission line is proposed based on the S-transform. February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: biomass gasifier, fluidized bed, gas–solid flow, Syngas, two-fluid model
The efficient use of renewable energy is receiving more and more attention in the context of “carbon neutrality” and “carbon peaking”. For a long time, biomass has been used less efficiently as a renewable energy source, but with the development of fluidized biomass gasification technology, it can play an increasing role in industrial production. A fluidized bed biomass gasifier has a strong nonstationary process due to its complex energy−mass exchange, and analysis of its complex reaction process and products has relied on experiments for a long time. This paper uses a Euler−Euler two-fluid model to establish a three-dimensional CFD model of the fluidized bed biomass gasifier, on which factors affecting syngas generation are analyzed. The simulation shows that increasing the initial bed temperature can effectively improve syngas production, while increasing the air equivalent is not beneficial for syngas production.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dragonfly algorithm, MLPE, MPPT, partial shading condition, photovoltaic, uniform irradiance condition
Photovoltaic (PV) solar energy is a very promising renewable energy technology, as solar PV systems are less efficient because of climate conditions, temperature, and irradiance change. So, to resolve this problem, two PV topologies are used, i.e., centralized and distributed PV systems. The centralized technique is quicker than the distributed technique in terms of convergence speed and a faster power tracking approach. In the event of uniform irradiance, the centralized system also has the benefit of supplying superior energy, but in PS scenarios, a huge amount of energy is lost. However, the distributed approach requires current and voltage measurements at each panel, resulting in a massive data set. Nevertheless, in the event of shading circumstances, the distributed technique is highly effective because a modular level power electronics (MLPE) converter is used. While in a centralized PV system, there is only a single DC-DC converter for the whole PV system. In this research work,... [more]
