A Backcasting Analysis toward a 100% Renewable Energy Transition by 2040 for Off-Grid Islands
Khrisydel Rhea M. Supapo, Lorafe Lozano, Ian Dominic F. Tabañag, Edward M. Querikiol
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: backcasting analysis, HOMER, hybrid renewable energy, simulation optimization, techno-enviro-economic analysis
The rapid increase in energy consumption results from population growth and technological advancement, while economic growth also relies heavily on the availability of energy. As fossil fuels become scarcer and greenhouse gas emissions increase, renewable energy sources are regarded as practical solutions to meet increasing energy demands. This study aims to develop a sustainable energy transition pathway for off-grid island communities in the Philippines. It adopts the concept of backcasting analysis, focusing on the demand and supply side of the energy transition. The transition considers three milestones: business as usual (BAU), minimal transition scenario (MTS), and absolute transition scenario (ATS). The techno-enviro-economic analysis is performed for each milestone to determine the optimal energy resource mix while addressing the three dimensions of the Energy Trilemma: energy security, energy equity, and environmental sustainability. The approach is implemented in three off-gr... [more]

Rafał Kuźniak, Artur Pawelec, Artur Bartosik, Marek Pawełczyk
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery energy storage system, BESS management, Energy Efficiency, microgrid, peak shaving
The capacity limitations of distribution networks, the increasing demands for electricity installation in terms of electricity quality parameters, and the development of electromobility all increase the need to implement systems in order to stabilize and regulate loads for end users. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs), that operate in internal microgrids of enterprises, allow smoothing of electrical power consumption profiles by actively reducing peak demand power. By using BESSs to implement a peak shaving strategy to reduce the peak power consumption of a company in an external network, energy efficiency can be improved by reducing contractual capacity. The aim of this study is to determine the conditions for the use of energy storage, in order to implement a peak shaving strategy for which the installation of the enterprise microgrid is economically efficient. The analysis of the operating conditions of the BESS should take into account the size of the energy storage, the charac... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, Coal, electricity generation, natural gas (NG), reduction scenario
The main purpose of this paper is to develop possible scenarios for reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in Serbia by switching from coal-fired to natural gas-fired electricity generation by the end of 2050. Accordingly, the challenges are to establish scenarios and identify measures that are best suited to all Western Balkan countries. In particular, this paper proposes a number of energy mix scenarios that offer some options for reducing CO2 emissions while maintaining an economic way of consumption. Projections of these reduction scenarios are obtained by combining the Kaya identity with the emission factor method. A simplified methodology based on sensitivity analysis is used as a source of data to estimate the nonstatistical uncertainty limits for the projections of the reduction scenarios. The sensitivity analysis is carried out using historical data from Serbia for the period from 1990 to 2019. In addition, a direct verification of the proposed methodology is performed based... [more]

Alexandre Lucas, Salvador Carvalhosa
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: clustering, community participation, dynamic time warping, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, renewable energy communities, social engagement
Renewable energy communities (REC) are bound to play a crucial role in the energy transition, as their role, activities, and legal forms become clearer, and their dissemination becomes larger. Even though their mass grid integration, is regarded with high expectations, their diffusion, however, has not been an easy task. Its legal form and success, entail responsibilities, prospects, trust, and synergies to be explored between its members, whose collective dynamics should aim for optimal operation. In this regard, the pairing methodology of potential participants ahead of asset dimensioning seems to have been overlooked. This article presents a methodology for pairing consumers, based on their georeferenced load consumptions. A case study in an area of Porto (Asprela) was used to test the methodology. QGIS is used as a geo-representation tool and its PlanHeat plugin for district characterization support. A supervised statistical learning approach is used to identify the feature importa... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fuel efficiency, heavy-duty vehicles, onboard electricity production, thermal control, thermoelectric generators, vapour chambers, variable conductance heat pipes, waste heat recovery
The road transport industry faces the need to develop its fleet for lower energy consumption, pollutants and CO2 emissions. Waste heat recovery systems with Thermoelectric Generators (TEGs) can directly convert the exhaust heat into electric energy, aiding the electrical needs of the vehicle, thus reducing its dependency on fuel energy. The present work assesses the optimisation and evaluation of a temperature-controlled thermoelectric generator (TCTG) concept to be used in a commercial heavy-duty vehicle (HDV). The system consists of a heat exchanger with wavy fins (WFs) embedded in an aluminium matrix along with vapour chambers (VCs), machined directly into the matrix, that grant the thermal control based on the spreading of local excess heat by phase change, as proposed by the authors in previous publications and patents. The TCTG concept behaviour was analysed under realistic driving conditions. An HDV with a 16 L Diesel engine was simulated in AVL Cruise to obtain the exhaust gas... [more]
Hierarchical Diagnostics and Risk Assessment for Energy Supply in Military Vehicles
Péter Földesi, László T. Kóczy, Ferenc Szauter, Dániel Csikor, Szabolcs Kocsis Szürke
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery, energy supply, military vehicles, risk assessment
Hybrid vehicles are gaining increasing global prominence, especially in the military, where unexpected breakdowns or even power deficits are not only associated with greater expense but can also cost the lives of military personnel. In some cases, it is extremely important that all battery cells and modules deliver the specified amount of capacity. Therefore, it is recommended to introduce a new measurement line of rapid diagnostics before deployment, in addition to the usual procedures. Using the results of rapid testing, we recommend the introduction of a hierarchical three-step diagnostics and assessment procedure. In this procedure, the key factor is the building up of a hierarchical tree-structured fuzzy signature that expresses the partial interdependence or redundancy of the uncertain descriptors obtained from the rapid tests. The fuzzy signature structure has two main important components: the tree structure itself, and the aggregations assigned to the internal nodes. The fuzzy... [more]
Recent Advances on CO2 Mitigation Technologies: On the Role of Hydrogenation Route via Green H2
Georgios Varvoutis, Athanasios Lampropoulos, Evridiki Mandela, Michalis Konsolakis, George E. Marnellos
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon capture and utilization, CO2 hydrogenation, green H2, power-to-X
The increasing trend in global energy demand has led to an extensive use of fossil fuels and subsequently in a marked increase in atmospheric CO2 content, which is the main culprit for the greenhouse effect. In order to successfully reverse this trend, many schemes for CO2 mitigation have been proposed, taking into consideration that large-scale decarbonization is still infeasible. At the same time, the projected increase in the share of variable renewables in the future energy mix will necessitate large-scale curtailment of excess energy. Collectively, the above crucial problems can be addressed by the general scheme of CO2 hydrogenation. This refers to the conversion of both captured CO2 and green H2 produced by RES-powered water electrolysis for the production of added-value chemicals and fuels, which are a great alternative to CO2 sequestration and the use of green H2 as a standalone fuel. Indeed, direct utilization of both CO2 and H2 via CO2 hydrogenation offers, on the one hand,... [more]

Dian Li, Ziheng Shangguan, Malan Huang, Xinyue Zhang, Lu Tang
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: green development efficiency, Super-SBM model, Tobit model, urban development
Green development is a significant concept that cannot be ignored in contemporary society. However, in the context of China’s transition from high-speed growth to high-quality development, the complex impact of urban development has brought great challenges to the urban green environment. In this paper, the impact of urban development on green development efficiency (GDE) was studied. First and foremost, a Super-SBM model was introduced to measure the GDE of 41 cities in the Yangtze River Delta during 2009−2018. Moreover, a Tobit model was used to analyze the correlation between four urban development factors, including economic development and GDE. According to the results, the mean GDE of the Yangtze River Delta is 0.824, and the GDE in most cities there has shown a fluctuating growth trend in this decade. By comparison, the GDEs of coastal cities and cities in the southeast of the Yangtze River Delta were generally higher than those of cities in the north, indicating that the green... [more]
Selecting Surface Inclination for Maximum Solar Power
Ioannis-Panagiotis Raptis, Anna Moustaka, Panagiotis Kosmopoulos, Stelios Kazadzis
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aerosols, clouds, Europe, inclination, North Africa, solar energy, tilt angle
Maximum efficiency of surfaces that exploit solar energy, including Photovoltaic Panels and Thermal collectors, is achieved by installing them in a certain inclination (tilt). Most common approach is to select an inclination angle equal to the location’s latitude. This is based on the astronomical calculations of the sun’s position throughout the year but ignores meteorological factors. Cloud coverage and aerosols tend to change the direct irradiance but also the radiance sky distribution, thus horizontal surfaces receive larger amounts than tilted ones in specific atmospheric conditions (e.g., cases of cloud presence). In the present study we used 15 years of data, from 25 cities in Europe and North Africa in order to estimate the optimal tilt angle and the related energy benefits based in real atmospheric conditions. Data were retrieved from Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service (CAMS). Four diffuse irradiance, various models are compared, and their differences are evaluated. Equ... [more]
The Measurement and SPICE Modelling of Schottky Barrier Diodes Appropriate for Use as Bypass Diodes within Photovoltaic Modules

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bypass diode, electromagnetic compatibility, measurement, photovoltaic, Schottky diode, SPICE, transient simulation
The modelling of surges within PV (photovoltaic) installations has been the subject of much research in recent years. However, accurate simulations cannot be performed unless each and every component within a PV installation is modelled in sufficient detail. The bypass diodes within a PV module are frequently omitted from such simulations. When included, they are often represented by oversimplified models. This article addresses this need by presenting SPICE (Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis) models for three Schottky diodes, chosen due to their suitability for use as bypass diodes. These models are the combination of DC (direct current) large-signal and AC (alternating current) small-signal sub-models, which are integrated such that the resulting full circuital models allow for accurate simulations involving large-signal transient stimuli. Two types of experimental setups, one incorporating a DC current−voltage curve sweep, and the other involving VNA-based (vector... [more]
Fatigue Assessment of Wind Turbine Towers: Review of Processing Strategies with Illustrative Case Study
João Pacheco, Francisco Pimenta, Sérgio Pereira, Álvaro Cunha, Filipe Magalhães
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic monitoring, fatigue assessment, strain gauges, wind turbine
Wind turbines are structures predominantly subjected to dynamic loads throughout their period of life. In that sense, fatigue design plays a central role. Particularly, support structure design might be conservative with respect to fatigue, which may lead to a real fatigue life of considerably more than 20 years. For these reasons, the implementation of a fatigue monitoring system can be an important advantage for the management of wind farms, providing the following outputs: (i) estimation of the evolution of real fatigue condition; (ii) since the real condition of fatigue damage is known, these results could be an essential element for a decision about extending the lifespan of the structure and the possibility of repowering or overpowering; and (iii) the results of the instrumented wind turbines can be extrapolated to other wind turbines of the same wind farm. This paper reviews the procedures for calculating the fatigue damage of wind turbine towers using strain measurements. The a... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: deformation characteristics, field-scale experiment, tunnel-type anchorage, ultimate bearing capacity
The suspension pipe bridge has become the main span type due to its large span, light structure, and other characteristics, playing an important role in the construction of the oil and gas backbone network and energy layout. Tunnel-type anchorage (TTA) is a special underground structure that provides anchorage tension for the suspension bridge. Since its form and bearing mechanism are complex, there is no general design method for tunnel-type anchorage so far, and the theoretical and normative research is not mature. In this paper, a field-scale experiment was carried out to study the north side tunnel of Wujiagang Bridge in Yichang, China. According to the similarity principle, the 1:12 tunnel anchor scale model was established. The tunnel anchor scale model is selected in the area adjacent to the actual project site to ensure the similarity of stratigraphic conditions. Through the use of a displacement meter, inclinometer hole, strain gauge, micrometers, and other comprehensive monit... [more]

Chunning Song, Yu Zhang, Qijin Ling, Shaogeng Zheng
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: double unscented Kalman Filter, improved Harris hawk optimization algorithm, single-flow zinc–nickel battery, state of charge, state of health
The single-flow zinc−nickel battery (ZNB) is a new type of flow battery with a simple structure, large-scale energy storage, and low cost, and thus has attracted much attention in the battery field recently. The state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH) are key indicators of the battery, and their inaccurate estimation can damage the battery. However, little has been done so far to study how to jointly estimate SOC and SOH for the ZNB. In this paper, the method of adaptive IDUKF is proposed. A second-order equivalent circuit model is applied to improve the accuracy. At the same time, the double unscented Kalman filter (DUKF), which is optimized by the improved Harris hawk optimization (IHHO) algorithm, is used to estimate the SOC and parameters online. Then, the capacity update model is introduced to simulate the change in SOH. Finally, the proposed method is applied to a 16 Ah ZNB, and the experimental results confirm the validity of the proposed method.

Keywords: battery storage plants, carbon emission-free, Energy Storage, generation mix, lithium-ion battery, power systems, pumped storage generation, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar power generation
Climate change motivated by human activities constitutes one of the main challenges of this century. To cut carbon emissions in order to mitigate carbon’s dangerous effects, the current energy generation mix should be shifted to renewable sources. The main drawback of these technologies is their intermittency, which will require energy storage systems to be fully integrated into the generation mix, allowing them to be more controllable. In recent years, great progress to develop an effective and economically feasible energy storage systems, particularly motivated by the recent rise of demand for electric transportation, has been made. Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery prices have fallen near 90% over the past decade, making possible the affordability of electric vehicles and transforming the economics of renewable energy. In this work, a study on storage capacity demand previously presented as conference paper is expanded, including a deep analysis of the Spanish generation mix, the evaluat... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep learning (DL), forecasting, neural network, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sky image, solar power generation
Solar photovoltaic (PV) power generation is prone to drastic changes due to cloud cover. The power is easily affected within a very short period of time. Thus, the accuracy of grasping cloud distribution is important for PV power forecasting. This study proposes a novel sky image method to obtain the cloud coverage rate used for short-term PV power forecasting. The authors developed an image analysis algorithm from the sky images obtained by an on-site whole sky imager (WSI). To verify the effectiveness of cloud coverage rate as the parameter for PV power forecast, four different combinations of weather features were used to compare the accuracy of short-term PV power forecasting. In addition to the artificial neural network (ANN) model, long short-term memory (LSTM) and the gated recurrent unit (GRU) were also introduced to compare their applicability conditions. After a comprehensive analysis, the coverage rate is the key weather feature, which can improve the accuracy by about 2% co... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: heterogeneous WSN, hybrid-based TEEN, IoT, multipath link routing protocol (MLRP), ubiquitous data storage protocol (U-DSP), WSNs
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and the Internet of Things (IoT) are increasingly making an impact in a wide range of domain-specific applications. In IoT-integrated WSNs, nodes generally function with limited battery units and, hence, energy efficiency is considered as the main design challenge. For homogeneous WSNs, several routing techniques based on clusters are available, but only a few of them are focused on energy-efficient heterogeneous WSNs (HWSNs). However, security provisioning in end-to-end communication is the main design challenge in HWSNs. This research work presents an energy optimizing secure routing scheme for IoT application in heterogeneous WSNs. In our proposed scheme, secure routing is established for confidential data of the IoT through sensor nodes with heterogeneous energy using the multipath link routing protocol (MLRP). After establishing the secure routing, the energy and network lifetime is improved using the hybrid-based TEEN (H-TEEN) protocol, which also... [more]

Keywords: Concentrated Solar Power, Cross-Entropy, efficiency, optimization method, Parabolic Trough Collector, Seebeck effect
In this research, a Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) as a Parabolic Trough Collector (PTC), using Peltier cooling modules for power generation was analyzed by the Cross-Entropy method. When comparing conventional solar electric generators with this system, we have the advantage that it is compact and lightweight and can be easily assembled and used as low-cost power generation equipment. For this system, we perform I(V) measurements and use fit models to accurately extract the model parameters. This is all in a standalone, robust, and simultaneous fit of three equations, through the global optimization method called Cross-Entropy. This is a robust method that had never been applied to extract parameters in a thermoelectric generation.

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biomass, carbonization, charcoal, gas, kiln, pyrolysis, wood
Charcoal is produced in large quantities in the Portuguese region of Alentejo mainly using traditional brick kilns. Information about this type of carbonization technology is scarce, which makes it urgent to characterize the process as a starting point for performance improvements. In this context, this study aims to characterize the operation of a cylindrical brick kiln (≈80 m3) during regular wood carbonization cycles. Relevant process parameters were monitored along with the yields and/or composition of the main products (carbonization gas, charcoal, and charcoal fines) to evaluate the mass balance of the process. The results show that the bulk of the kiln operates at temperatures below 300 °C, which greatly limits the quality of the charcoal. For instance, the fixed carbon content of charcoal can easily be as low as 60 wt.%. The yield of charcoal is also low, with values below 25 wt.% of dry wood feed. This means that significant quantities of by-products are generated in the proce... [more]

Keywords: CPSOGSA, HTGS, mixed H2/H∞ controller, T-S fuzzy, wind power disturbances
The hydraulic turbine governing system (HTGS) is a complex nonlinear system that regulates the rotational speed and power of a hydro-generator set. In this work, an incremental form of an HTGS nonlinear model was established and the Takagi−Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy linearization and mixed H2/H∞ robust control theory was applied to the design of an HTGS controller. A T-S fuzzy H2/H∞ controller for an HTGS based on modified hybrid particle swarm optimization and gravitational search algorithm integrated with chaotic maps (CPSOGSA) is proposed in this paper. The T-S fuzzy model of an HTGS that integrates multiple-state space equations was established by linearizing numerous equilibrium points. The linear matrix inequality (LMI) toolbox in MATLAB was used to solve the mixed H2/H∞ feedback coefficients using the CPSOGSA intelligent algorithm to optimize the weighting matrix in the process so that each mixed H2/H∞ feedback coefficients in the fuzzy control were optimized under the constraints to im... Keywords: control tap-changer, evolution algorithm, multi-criteria optimization, power system, voltage control
The quality of electricity is a very important indicator. The durability and reliable operation of all connected devices depend on the quality of the network voltage. Rapid changes in loads, changes in network connections and the presence of uncontrolled energy sources require the development of new voltage regulation systems. This requires voltage regulation systems capable of responding quickly to sudden voltage changes. In substations with control transformers, it is possible thanks to the use of semiconductor tap changers. Moreover, voltage regulation and reactive power compensation systems should be built as one system. This is due to the close dependence of voltage and reactive power in the network node. Therefore, it was proposed to use artificial intelligence methods to build a new voltage regulation and reactive power compensation system using all measurement voltages of network nodes. In the first stage of the research, active and reactive powers, as well as the voltage of th... [more]
