The Effect of Single Sandstone Stacking Pattern on the Sandstone Reservoir Physical Properties—A Case Study from the Shanxi Formation in the Daniudi Area, Northeastern Ordos Basin
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: compaction, dissolution, lithofacies, Ordos Basin, sandstone stacking pattern, Shanxi Formation
The role of the single sandstone stacking pattern in controlling the physical properties of the sandstones deposited in the distribution channels of the deltaic plain is unclear. This study aims to reveal the effect of the single sandstone packing patterns on the reservoir qualities of sandstones from the Shanxi Formation in the Daniudi gas field of Ordos Basin. Based on the core observation, 2D-image analysis, and thin section identification, the lithofacies were identified, the stacking patterns of the single sandbody were divided, and the differences in minerals composition and diagenesis of different sandstone stacking patterns were analyzed. According to the sedimentary facies analysis, 10 types of lithofacies have been identified in the Shanxi Formation in the study area. The single sandstone stacking patterns include mixed stacking patterns of coarse to medium-grained sandstone, fining upwards stacking patterns of coarse- to medium-grained sandstone, and coarsening upwards stack... Nickel Hydroxide Nanofluid Cathodes with High Solid Loadings and Low Viscosity for Energy Storage Applications
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flow battery, low viscosity, nanoelectrofuels, nanofluids, nickel hydroxide
Nanofluid electrodes with high loading of active solid materials have significant potential as high energy density flow battery electrolytes; however, two key criteria need to be met: they must have a manageable viscosity for pumping and simultaneously exhibit good electrochemical activity. A typical dispersion of nickel hydroxide nanoparticles (~100 nm) is limited to 5−10 wt.% of solids, above which it has a paste-like consistency, incompatible with flow applications. We report on the successful formulation of stable dispersions of a nano-scale nickel hydroxide cathode (β-Ni(OH)2) with up to 60 wt.% of solids and low viscosity (32 cP at 25 °C), utilizing a surface graft of small organic molecules. The fraction of grafting moiety is less than 3 wt.% of the nanoparticle weight, and its presence is crucial for the colloidal stability and low viscosity of suspensions. Electrochemical testing of the pristine and modified β-Ni(OH)2 nanoparticles in the form of solid casted electrodes were f... [more]

Coordinated Reactive Power Control with a Variable Shunt Reactor and an Inverter-Based Wind Power Plant
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coordinated control, reactive power control, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, variable shunt reactor, voltage regulation
Underground or submarine cables have a higher capacitance component than overhead lines, and they inject a large amount of capacitive reactive power into the system. A separate reactive power compensation device is required in order for a wind power plant (WPP) connected to the public network with a cable to meet the reactive power requirements required by the grid code. In this paper, a reactive power control using a variable shunt reactor (VSR) was proposed to satisfy the reactive power requirement required by the grid code for a WPP connected to the grid through a cable. The proposed reactive power control method compensates for the capacitive reactive power of the cable by using a VSR, and it follows the reactive power command through the reactive power control of a WPP. In the section where it is difficult to follow the WPP reactive power command only with the reactive power capacity of a WPP due to cable losses or a cable reactive power compensation error of the VSR, the reactive... Economic Analysis of Heat Distribution Concepts for a Small Solar District Heating System
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: 4GDH, district heat, GRUDIS, hot water circulation, Solar Thermal, TRNSYS
One challenge in today’s district heating systems is the relatively high distribution heat loss. Lowering distribution temperatures is one way to reduce operational costs resulting from high heat losses, while changing the distribution system from steel pipes to plastic pipes and changing the heat distribution concept can reduce investment costs. The result is that the overall life cycle cost of the district heating system is reduced, leading to the improved cost competitiveness of district heating versus individual heating options. The main aim of this study was to determine the most cost-efficient distribution system for a theoretical solar district heating system, by comparing the marginal life cycle cost of two different distribution systems. A secondary aim was to determine the influence of the employed pipe type and insulation level on the marginal life cycle cost by comparing detailed economic calculations, including differences in pipe installation costs and construction costs,... Convolutional Neural Network and Support Vector Machine for Prediction of Damage Intensity to Multi-Storey Prefabricated RC Buildings
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: building damage, Convolutional Neural Network, damage intensity, RC structures, Support Vector Machine
This paper presents the results of a comparative analysis of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) models created for the prediction of the extent and intensity of damage caused to multi-storey reinforced concrete (RC) buildings. The research was conducted on a group of residential buildings, which were subjected to mining impacts in the form of surface deformations and rock mass tremors during their technical life cycle. Damage to buildings poses a significant threat to the safety of the structure and the serviceability of the buildings. They are often the cause of breaks in thermal insulation, which leads to excessive consumption of thermal energy used for space heating, which in turn contributes to over-emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere. Therefore, this problem is important, not only from a technical dimension, but also includes social, economic, and environmental aspects, which allows it to be classified as an issue of sustainable development in the... The Effect of a Metal Particle on Surface Charge Accumulation Behavior of Epoxy Insulator with Zoning Coating
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: GIL, metal particle, surface charge accumulation, zoning coating
Epoxy insulators are widely used in Gas-Insulated Transmission Lines (GILs), playing a significant role in electrical insulation and mechanical support. The metal particles generated during the production and operation of the equipment aggravate surface charge accumulation on the insulator, causing surface flashover. Therefore, it is necessary to study the suppression strategy of charge accumulation. In this paper, a downsized disc insulator was taken as the research object to investigate the effect of zoning coating on charge suppression with the presence of a linear aluminum metal particle under negative DC voltage. The zoning coating method was achieved by painting coatings with different conductivities in three areas on the insulator surface to regulate the charge. The inhibition mechanism of zoning coating on the charge accumulation in the presence of a linear metal particle was analyzed with the assistance of numerical simulation. The results showed that negative charges were acc... [more]

Energy and Mineral Resources Exploitation in the Delignitization Era: The Case of Greek Peripheries
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: Bayesian VAR, energy GDP, energy policy, energy transition, Greece, regional convergence
The efficient and sustainable exploitation of energy resources may secure a sustainable economic growth for different regions. However, the peripheries are subject to social, economic, and political constraints, with limited power over energy management. The present work examines regional convergence in exploitation efficiency as synopsized in the GDP generated by energy and minerals in an era of the country’s efforts to shut down the lignite-run power production. With the assistance of panel unit root tests, we confirm non convergence of the variables employed, an expected result given the fact that different energy sources are being used for energy production by each different periphery, generating different economic results. In the second stage the methodology employed is a Bayesian vector auto-regressive model (BVAR) with an informative prior on the steady state. The particular methodology outperforms the conventional VAR methodology due to limited degrees of freedom. The Impulse r... [more]

Overview of the Role of Energy Resources in Algeria’s Energy Transition
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Algeria is a wealthy country with natural resources, namely, nuclear, renewable, and non-renewable sources. The non-renewable energy sources are considered the lion’s share for energy production (98%). Algeria’s efforts to ensure and strengthen its energy security will take an important step in the coming decades by commissioning new energy infrastructure based on intensive use of water, coal, nuclear, non-renewable, and renewable sources. The implementation of new power infrastructure is expected to be operational from 2030. The renewable power realization in Algeria is relatively less compared to other African countries, i.e., Morocco, Egypt, South Africa, etc. The total renewable power installed capacity in Algeria reached 686 MW in 2020, as part of its national energy portfolio, although the Algerian government has spent tremendous efforts on introducing new sustainable technologies to enable the transition towards a cleaner and sustainable energy system. February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: back-calculation in geomechanics, non-linear regression, numerical modeling, rock mechanics, room and pillar mining system
An important element of numerical modeling for specific mining issues is the selection of model parameters. The incorrect determination of geomechanical parameters can result in significant calculation errors carried throughout the entire problem. This paper presents a method for determining effective geomechanical parameters for technological and residual pillars through the use of numerical modeling, specifically, back-calculation. This is based on the results of numerical simulations, measurement data (e.g., excavation convergence measurements), and statistical methods (a non-linear regression model with “dummy” variables). The result is that appropriate parameters of pillars are set out iteratively so that the displacements of selected points in the numerical model correspond (with some approximation) to the results of mine measurements. The procedure of determining pillar parameters is presented using a case study of one mining field in an underground copper mine, where the deposi... [more]

Latest Energy Storage Trends in Multi-Energy Standalone Electric Vehicle Charging Stations: A Comprehensive Study
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric vehicle charging, energy storage configurations, future energy storage, multi-energy systems, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, standalone charging stations
The popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) is increasing day by day due to their environmentally friendly operation and high milage as compared to conventional fossil fuel vehicles. Almost all leading manufacturers are working on the development of EVs. The main problem associated with EVs is that charging many of these vehicles from the grid supply system imposes an extra burden on them, especially during peak hours, which results in high per-unit costs. As a solution, EV charging stations integrated with hybrid renewable energy resources (HREs) are being preferred, which utilize multi-energy systems to produce electricity. These charging stations can either be grid-tied or isolated. Isolated EV charging stations are operated without any interconnection to the main grid. These stations are also termed standalone or remote EV charging stations, and due to the absence of a grid supply, storage becomes compulsory for these systems. To attain maximum benefits from a storage system, it must... [more]

An Adaptive Hybrid Control of Grid Tied Inverter for the Reduction of Total Harmonic Distortion and Improvement of Robustness against Grid Impedance Variation
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive control, grid-tied inverter, hybrid control, stability performance, total harmonic distortion
Grid-tied inverters play an efficient role in the integration of renewable energy resources with utility grids. Motivation: However, the interconnection between power converters and the grid has been seen to be responsible for various stability issues such as weak grid, and under weak grid conditions the injection of power to the grid becomes a challenging task due to continuously varying grid impedance affecting the stability margins as a result. Additionally, the grid impedance-related issues boost the voltage harmonics which further devalue its performance. These voltage harmonics propagate through the Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) circuit to the control unit of the inverter which in turn amplifies the low order harmonics of the inverter. Method: The aim of this research is to introduce a novel strategy that decreases the effect of grid impedance-variations on the performance and stability of an inverter. Hence, an adaptive hybrid mode control technique consisting of two parts is proposed... [more]

Interaction of Consumer Heterogeneity and Technological Progress in the US Electric Vehicle Market
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cascading diffusion, electromobility, EV adoption, heterogeneity, learning rate, technological progress
Electric Technology Vehicles (ETVs: hybrid, electric, and plug-in hybrid) may reach price parity with incumbent internal combustion vehicles (ICEVs) in the near future. Climate policy for transportation will depend on the degree to which consumers prefer ETVs, and price parity is a key factor. In this study, we explore the interaction between future cost reductions and the economically motivated adoption of ETVs. We construct a model of the U.S. personal vehicle market accounting for heterogenous use and vehicle preferences, in which adoption induces cost reductions that increase future market share. Model results indicate that price parity is reached for most consumers in a number of cost scenarios, but not with constant ICEV costs and modest ETV cost declines. A price parity future suggests that government support could be temporary and phased out after a successful market transition. However, if ETVs continue to be more expensive than ICEVs, then lasting government support is needed... [more]

Load Flow and Short-Circuit Methods for Grids Dominated by Inverter-Based Distributed Generation
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: distribution systems, inverter-based generation, operation modes, power flow, short-circuit
The use of power-electronics-based devices in distribution generation seeks to improve energy quality and reduce costs. The inverter-based distributed generator, that works in different operation modes, has emerged as a promising technology. In a high distributed generation penetration scenario it is important to know the voltage profile and fault information due to the uncertainty in the generator operation and the impact that have on the network. This study aims to use two proposed methods of analysis: for power flow, based on backward/forward sweep method, and short-circuit, based on hybrid impedance matrix, that considers the inverter operation modes and represents each generator as a voltage-controlled current source. The chosen network is the IEEE 34-Node Test Feeder with a generator on each load per phase. The voltage profiles obtained will be validated with a Simulink/Matlab phasorial model. A Real-Time Fault-Tolerant Control Approach to Ensure the Resiliency of a Self-Healing Multilevel Converter
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: converter resiliency, fault-tolerant control, multilevel converter, neutral-point-clamped, self-healing
Ensuring service continuity in safety critical applications is crucial. In some of these applications, multilevel converters play a vital role. In this regard, this research work presents a self-healing fault-tolerant control approach to ensure the resiliency of a neutral-point clamped converter when a semiconductor component encounters an open circuit fault. The defective semiconductor can be a power switch or a clamping diode. By applying the proposed real-time fault-tolerance control, the rated output voltage and output current are restored during post-fault operation. Furthermore, the total harmonic distortion value of the output voltage during application of the real time self-healing control does not increase when compared with that during healthy operation. Since the realization of the proposed control strategy does not require any bidirectional switch, a fast transition between the healthy and fault-tolerant operation is accomplished. Moreover, the proposed structure can ensure... [more]

Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: decarbonisation of neighbourhoods, district energy infrastructure, energy transition, GIS, positive energy district
Planning the required energy infrastructure for the energy transition is a crucial task for various neighbourhood concepts, such as positive energy districts. However, energy planning often comes with the challenges of data shortages and a lack of comparability among solutions for different districts. This work aims to enable this comparability by introducing an approach for categorising districts according to parameters that are relevant for the planning of neighbourhood energy infrastructures. Four parameters (climate, floor space index, heating demand and share of residential buildings) and their respective ranges (bands) were derived from the literature. Additionally, this work visualised the combination of all parameter bands across Europe to conveniently showcase districts that are comparable according to the selected parameters. Subject: Materials
Keywords: germanium, graphene, maximum entropy principle, moments method, silicon, thermal conductivity
In this paper, we review the application of a recent formula for the lattice thermal conductivity to silicon and germanium, which are two of the most commonly used materials in electronic devices, and to graphene, one the most promising new materials. The formula, which is based on a hierarchy of macroscopic models that generalize the Cattaneo equation, is capable of reproducing the results achieved by means of the well-known Callaway formula. In semiconductors, energy transport is largely due to acoustic phonons, therefore one can choose suitable moments of their occupation numbers as variables of the models. Equations determining the time evolution of these state variables are derived from the Boltzmann−Peierls transport equation by integration, while the maximum entropy principle (MEP) is used to obtain closure relations for the extra variables. All relevant phonon scattering mechanisms are taken into account. We present numerical results regarding the steady-state and dynamical the... [more]
