Hemant Ahuja, Arika Singh, Sachin Sharma, Gulshan Sharma, Pitshou N. Bokoro
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: converters, grid, induction generator, inverters, pitch angle, STATCOM, stationary reference frame, synchronous reference frame, wind energy
High penetration of wind power into the grid necessitates the coordinated action of wind energy conversion systems and the grid. A suitable generation control is required to fulfill the grid integration requirements, especially during faults. A system using a pair of voltage source converters with a squirrel cage induction generator coupled to a wind turbine is proposed to provide fault ride-through during grid faults. A threefold action is used for providing the effective fault ride-through via coordinated action of the machine side and the grid side converter. The entire wind energy conversion system is controlled such that the wind turbine remains connected even during the faults. To implement the threefold action: (i) A decoupled current controller is placed in the grid side converter, which separately controls the positive and negative sequence currents arising during faults. The grid side converter controller is capable of eliminating the double frequency oscillations at the dc-l... [more]

Keywords: bearing assembly, cluster single-coil eddy current sensor, gas turbine engine, oil system, power plant, prototype, real-time monitoring system, test results, wear particles
In the example of the aviation gas turbine engine the problem of monitoring metal wear particles of friction pairs in the oil systems of gas turbine power plants is considered. The solution based on using the multi-channel cluster single-coil eddy current sensor (CSCECS) with sensitive elements in the form of single circuits is proposed. The CSCECS provides the detection of ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic particles and their ranking by several size groups. The sensor is invariant to the size (inner diameter) of the monitored oil pipeline and has high throughput and identical sensitivity across all channels. Two variants of the hardware structure of the debris continuous monitoring system (DCMS) prototype implementing the proposed approach are suggested. The first variant is intended for engine bench tests and contains the CSCECS with integrated preamplifiers and forced air cooling of the electronic modules. The second variant of the DCMS prototype involves the use of the uncooled s... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: broadened TCN, data preprocessing, optimized recurrent BLS, wind speed forecast
A novel hybrid model is proposed to improve the accuracy of ultra-short-term wind speed prediction by combining the improved complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (ICEEMDAN), the sample entropy (SE), optimized recurrent broad learning system (ORBLS), and broadened temporal convolutional network (BTCN). First, ICEEMDAN is introduced to smooth the nonlinear part of the wind speed data by decomposing the raw wind speed data into a series of sequences. Second, SE is applied to quantitatively assess the complexity of each sequence. All sequences are divided into simple sequence set and complex sequence set based on the values of SE. Third, based on the typical broad learning system (BLS), we propose ORBLS with cyclically connected enhancement nodes, which can better capture the dynamic characteristics of the wind. The improved particle swarm optimization (PSO) is used to optimize the hyper-parameters of ORBLS. Fourth, we propose BTCN by adding a dilated causal c... [more]
Tower Models for Power Systems Transients: A Review
Erika Stracqualursi, Giuseppe Pelliccione, Salvatore Celozzi, Rodolfo Araneo
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: power system transients, tower model, tower surge impedance, transmission lines
Fast-front transients play an important role in the insulation design of any power system. When a stroke hits the shield wire or the tower of high-voltage overhead power lines, flashover may occur either along the span or across tower insulators, depending on the relevant voltages and insulation strength. As a result, backflashover may take place from the tower structure to the phase conductor whenever a huge impulse current flows along the tower towards considerably high footing impedances. For these reasons, tower modeling for transients studies is an important step in the insulation design, and also for lower voltage applications, where indirect lightning effects may play a predominant role. However, after decades of research on tower modeling, starting from the 1930s with the first model proposed by Jordan, no consensus has been reached neither on a widely accepted tower model nor on the quantitative effect of the tower models on insulation design. Moreover, the fundamental mechani... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Energy Storage, heat conductivity, LTESS, melting cycle, metal foam, phase change material, thermal homogeneity
In this work, a commercial paraffin PCM (RT35) characterized by a change range of the solid-liquid phase transition temperature Ts−l=29−36 °C and the low thermal conductivity λSL=0.2 W/m K is experimentally tested by submitting it to thermal charging/discharging cycles. The paraffin is contained in a case with a rectangular base and heated from the top due to electrical resistance. The aim of this research is to show the benefits that a 95% porous copper metal foam (pore density PD=20PPI) can bring to a PCM-based thermal storage system by simply loading it, due to the consequent increase in the effective thermal conductivity of the medium (λLOAD=7.03 W/m K). The experimental results highlight the positive effects of the copper foam presence, such as the heat conduction improvement throughout the system, and a significant reduction in time for the complete melting of the PCM. In addition, the experimental data highlight that in the copper-foam-loaded PCM the maximum temperature reached... [more]
Automatic Optimization of Input Split and Bias Voltage in Digitally Controlled Dual-Input Doherty RF PAs

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: digital input control, Doherty amplifier, dual-input power amplifiers, Optimization, parameter search, RF power amplifiers
Digitally controlled Dual-Input Doherty Power Amplifiers (DIDPAs) are becoming increasingly popular due to the flexible input signal splitting between the main and auxiliary stages. Nevertheless, the presence of many degrees of freedom, e.g., input amplitude split and phase displacement as well as biasing for multiple stages, often involves inefficient trial-and-error procedures to reach a suitable PA performance. This article presents automated parameter setting based on coordinate descent or Bayesian optimizations, demonstrating an improvement in the performance in terms of RF output power and power-added efficiency (PAE) in the presence of broadband-modulated signals, yet maintaining suitable linear behavior for, e.g., communications applications.

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon capture and storage (CCS), carbon dioxide (CO2), efficiency factors, offshore Atlantic, southeastern United States
The geological storage of CO2 in the Earth’s subsurface has the potential to significantly offset greenhouse gas emissions for safe, economical, and acceptable public use. Due to legal advantages and vast resource capacity, offshore CO2 storage provides an attractive alternative to onshore options. Although offshore Lower Cretaceous reservoirs have a vast expected storage capacity, there is a limited quantitative assessment of the offshore storage resource in the southeastern United States. This work is part of the Southeast Offshore Storage Resource Assessment (SOSRA) project, which presents a high-quality potential geological repository for CO2 in the Mid- and South Atlantic Planning Areas. This is the first comprehensive investigation and quantitative assessment of CO2 storage potential for the Lower Cretaceous section of the outer continental shelf that includes the Southeast Georgia Embayment and most of the Blake Plateau. An DPWM for Active DC-Link Type Quasi-Z-Source Inverter to Reduce Component Voltage Rating
Duc-Tri Do, Vinh-Thanh Tran, Khai Nguyen
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active quasi-Z-source inverter, DC-link type, discontinuous pulse width modulation, impedance-source inverter, switching commutation reduction
The conventional DC-link type quasi-Z-source inverter has been known as a buck−boost inverter with a low component voltage rating. This paper proposes an active DC-link type quasi-Z-source inverter by adding one active switch and one diode to the impedance-source network to enhance the voltage gain of the inverter. As a result, the component voltage rating of the inverter is significantly reduced, which is demonstrated through some comparisons between the proposed topology and others. A discontinuous pulse width modulation (DPWM) scheme is proposed to control the inverter, which reduces the number of commutations compared to the traditional strategy. Under this approach, the insertion of a shoot-through state does not cause any extra commutations compared to the conventional voltage-source inverter. Details about control implementation, steady-state analysis, and design guidelines are also presented in this paper. Simulation and a laboratory prototype have been built to test the propos... [more]
Deflection of Hydraulic Fractures and Shear Stress Disturbance Considering Thermal Effects: A Numerical Case Study
Nana Liu, Yongliang Wang
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deflection of hydraulic fractures, finite element-discrete element model, multistage hydrofracturing, shear stress disturbance, thermal effects
Quantitative characterization of propagation behaviors and morphology of hydraulic fractures is crucial for controlling and optimizing hydrofracturing effects. To study the disturbance deflection behaviors of multiple hydraulic fractures, a three-dimensional field-scale numerical model for multistage fracturing is established to study the shear stress disturbance and unstable propagation behavior of hydraulic fractures under different perforation cluster spacing. In the model, the thermal diffusion, fluid flow and deformation in reservoirs are considered to describe the thermal-hydro-mechanical coupling. In the numerical case study, the derived results show that the thermal effect between fracturing fluid and rock matrix is an important factor affecting fracture propagation, and thermal effects may increase the extent of fracture propagation. The size of stress shadow areas and the deflection of hydraulic fractures will increase with a decrease in multiple perforation cluster spacing i... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: constant torque, control system, field weakening, PMSM, two-region control of motor torque, vector control
This paper investigates the properties and design of energy conversion in an electric vehicle (EV) powertrain. Here, we combined the dynamics of vehicle motion with controlled electric propulsion, which is an EV powertrain. The control of two types of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) was considered. An algorithm was developed for the determination of the static characteristics of two-region motor torque control. A constant torque and a constant power region were used in the powertrain of the EV. The design of the control system for the PMSM was considered in the d,q reference frame. A precise mechanical model of the EV and the determination of road loads is shown. The main results of this study were the selection of the PI controller parameters (in analytical form), which was carried out for the simplified motor model and then extended for the d,q model, and energy consumption during the WLTP standard driving cycle. The presented simulation results of the proposed control sy... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: coating, electrochemical performance, lithium niobate, nickel-rich NMC, wet process
Due to their safety and high power density, one of the most promising types of all-solid-state lithium batteries is the one made with the argyrodite solid electrolyte (ASE). Although substantial efforts have been made toward the commercialization of this battery, it is still challenged by some technical issues. One of these issues is to prevent the side reactions at the interface of the ASE and the cathode active material (CAM). A solution to address this issue is to coat the CAM particles with a material that is compatible with both ASE and CAM. Prior studies show that the lithium niobate, LiNbO3, (LNO) is a promising material for coating CAM particles to reduce the interfacial side reactions. However, no systematic study is available in the literature to show the effect of coating LNO on CAM performance. This paper aims to quantify the effect of LNO coating on the electrochemical performance of a nickel-rich CAM. The electrochemical performance parameters that are studied are the cap... [more]
Forecasting Crude Oil Consumption in Poland Based on LSTM Recurrent Neural Network
Anna Manowska, Anna Bluszcz
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: crude oil consumption, crude oil trade, energy markets, LSTM, Machine Learning
Primary fuels, i.e., crude oil, natural gas, and power coal, dominate the total global demand for primary energy. Among them, crude oil plays a particularly important role due to the universality of applications and the practical lack of substitutes in transport. Crude oil is also one of the main sources of primary energy in Poland and accounts for around 30% of the energy consumed. Poland covers only 3% of its needs from domestic deposits. The rest is imported from Russia, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Great Britain, Kazakhstan, and Norway. Due to such a high import of raw material, Poland must anticipate future demand. On the one hand, this article aims to analyze the current (2020) and future (2040) crude oil consumption on the Polish market. The study analyzes the geopolitical and economic foundations of the functioning of the energy raw-materials market, the crude oil supply, the structure of Poland’s energy mix, and assumptions about the energy policy until 2040. On the other hand, conc... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: finite element method, multi-objective optimization, multi-physics, packaging insulation, power module
With the development of power modules for high voltage, high temperature, and high power density, their size is becoming smaller, and the packaging insulation experiences higher electrical, thermal, and mechanical stress. Packaging insulation needs to meet the requirement that internal electric field, temperature, and mechanical stress should be as low as possible. Focusing on the coupling principles and optimization design among electrical, thermal, and mechanical stresses in the power module packaging insulation, a multi-objective optimization design method based on Spice circuit, finite element field numerical calculation, and multi-objective gray wolf optimizer (MOGWO) is proposed. The packaging insulation optimal design of a 1.2 kV SiC MOSFET half-bridge power module is presented. First, the high field conductivity characteristics of the substrate ceramic and encapsulation silicone of the packaging insulation material were tested at different temperatures and external field streng... Keywords: diesel engine, flame temperature, fuel additives, kinetic and diffusion combustion, NOx, PM, synergy, two-colour method, visualisation
Research was conducted on fuels with additives that selectively affect the rate of kinetic (dQk/dα) and diffusion (dQd/dα) combustion in the diesel engine cylinder. In addition to the base fuel (DFB), DFKA fuel with an additive reducing dQk/dα, DFDA fuel with an additive increasing dQd/dα, and DFS fuel with both additives were tested. The main purpose of such dQ/dα course control in the engine cylinder was to simultaneously reduce the emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM), and to increase the efficiency of the combustion process. Similar to the course of the dQ/dα, the course of the combustion temperature (Tc(α)) affects the NOx produced and the number of afterburned solid particles; the influence of the fuel additives on the functional curves was analysed. In addition to analysis of the temperature Tc(α) calculated from the indicator diagrams, Tc(α) analysis was conducted using the two-colour method, which allows the analysis of the isotherm distributions loca... February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biaxial synchronous loading, fast moment-matching method, mechanical decoupling, wind turbine blades fatigue test
Wind power utilization is attracting worldwide attention in the renewable energy field, and as wind power develops from land to sea, the size of the blades is becoming incredibly larger. The fatigue test, especially the biaxial synchronous fatigue test for the blades, is becoming an indispensable step to ensure the blade’s quality before mass production, which means the biaxial independent test presently used may have difficulty reproducing the real damage for large-sized blades that oscillate simultaneously in flap-wise and edgewise directions in service conditions. The main point of the fatigue test is to carry out accelerated and reinforced oscillations on blades in the experimental plan. The target moments of critical blade sections are reached or not during the test are treated as one significant evaluation criterion. For independent tests, it is not hard to realize moment matching using additional masses fixed on certain critical blade sections, which may be not easy to put into... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, deep learning, energy consumption, forecasting, Korea, LSTM, neural network, random forest, Total Energy Supply, XGBoost
In predicting energy consumption, classic econometric and statistical models are used to forecast energy consumption. These models may have limitations in an increasingly fast-changing energy market, which requires big data analysis of energy consumption patterns and relevant variables using complex mathematical tools. In current literature, there are minimal comparison studies reviewing machine learning algorithms to predict energy consumption in Korea. To bridge this gap, this paper compared three different machine learning algorithms, namely the Random Forest (RF) model, XGBoost (XGB) model, and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model. These algorithms were applied in Period 1 (prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic) and Period 2 (after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic). Period 1 was characterized by an upward trend in energy consumption, while Period 2 showed a reduction in energy consumption. LSTM performed best in its prediction power specifically in Period 1, and RF outperfor... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: energy saving, metro, Optimization, regenerative braking, timetable, trial test
Rapid transit systems play a significant role in supporting rapid social and economic development in large cities all over the world. However, the systems consume a large amount of energy, which brings increasing environmental concerns. A number of energy-saving technologies have been studied on railways. However, few of the outcomes have been tested and evaluated in practice. This paper presents the development of a timetable optimization and trial test on a metro line to reach the full potential of the train regenerative braking system. To achieve this purpose, a timetable optimization algorithm has been developed, and a trial test of the optimal timetable has been arranged on a metro line for a whole day. In the test, all the trains running in the network were organized to operate in accordance with the optimal timetable. The trial test results indicate that by applying the optimal timetable, the regenerative braking energy utilization can be improved, thereby reducing the overall n... [more]

Keywords: alkaline pretreatment, bio-hydrogen, black liquor, dark fermentation, enzymatic hydrolysis, giant reed, pH
The perennial rhizomatous grass giant reed (Arundo donax L.) can be exploited to produce hydrogen by dark fermentation. This implies a high availability of simple sugars, like glucose and xylose, and, thus, a pre-treatment is necessary to remove lignin and expose the holocellulose to enzymatic attack. This study aimed at evaluating the hydrogen production from giant reed hydrolysates. Giant reed dry meal was pre-treated with diluted NaOH (1.2% weight/weight), then the solid fraction was separated from the alkaline black liquor by filtration, enzymatically hydrolyzed with a cellulase blend (Cellic CTec2), and fermented in mesophilic batch conditions with a microbial consortium derived from pig slurry. The impact on hydrogen yield of initial pH was evaluated by comparing the hydrogen production from hydrolysates with not adjusted (5.3) or adjusted initial pH (8.7) using NaOH or alkaline black liquor. The highest hydrogen yield, 2.0 mol/mol of hexoses, was obtained with alkaline initial p... [more]

Keywords: anomaly detection, auto-encoder, cyber security, deep learning, false data injection, smart grid
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems are essential for reliable communication and control of smart grids. However, in the cyber-physical realm, it becomes highly vulnerable to cyber-attacks like False Data Injection (FDI) into the measurement signal which can circumvent the conventional detection methods and interfere with the normal operation of grids, which in turn could potentially lead to huge financial losses and can have a large impact on public safety. It is imperative to have an accurate state estimation of power consumption for further operational decision-making.This work presents novel forecasting-aided anomaly detection using an CNN-LSTM based auto-encoder sequence to sequence architecture to combat against false data injection attacks. We further present an adaptive optimal threshold based on the consumption patterns to identify abnormal behaviour. Keywords: D-InSAR method, land subsidence assessment, Simulation, wind turbine location
Finding a suitable location is a key factor for long-term investment in wind turbine energy. It includes understanding the area of interest, such as the subsidence of the land. Land subsidence is a gradual decrease in the surface of the Earth due to natural and/or induced causes. It can cause damage, such as settlement problems in the ground near infrastructure including buildings and wind turbines, thus not being a suitable place for long-term investment. Here, we show a case study of land subsidence prediction and assessment of the Atsimo Andrefana region, the great south-western part of Madagascar, using theoretical simulation and satellite images from the Sentinel-1 mission using D-InSAR method. The predicted land subsidence related to the depletion of groundwater reservoirs in the Atsimo Andrefana region is around 12 mm. We found ~5 mm of subsidence related to the growing city of Toliary and with an average subsidence of 124 mm and the highest record of 167 mm in the most southern... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: molecular simulation, N2 adsorption experiment, pore connectivity, pore structure, shale gas
The N2 adsorption experiment is one of the most important methods for characterizing the pore structure of shale, as it covers the major pore size range present in such sediments. The goal of this work is to better understand both the mechanisms and application of low-pressure nitrogen adsorption experiments in pore structure characterization. To achieve this, the N2 adsorption molecular simulation method, low-pressure N2 adsorption experiments, total organic carbon (TOC) analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and a total of 196 shale samples from the Wufeng−Longmaxi formations in the Sichuan basin have been employed in this study. Based on the analytical data and the simulations, two parameters, the connectivity index and the large pore volume index, are proposed. These parameters are defined as the connectivity of the pore system and the volume of large nanopores (>10 nm) respectively, and they are calculated based on the N2 adsorption and des... [more]

Keywords: boundary layer separation, Computational Fluid Dynamics, flow control, turbulence, wind turbine
In this paper, we explore the improvement of the aerodynamic characteristics of wind turbine blades under stall conditions using passive flow control with slots. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Phase II rotor, for which detailed simulations and experimental data are available, served as a baseline for assessing the flow control system effects. The position and configuration of the slot used as a flow control system were determined using CFD analysis. The 3D-RANS equations are solved with ANSYS FLUENT using the k-ω SST turbulence closure model. The pressure coefficient for different wind speeds for the baseline configuration is compared to the available experimental data. The comparison shows that CFD results were better for the attached flow. The current work consists of a 3-D CFD modeling of a rotating blade equipped with different flow control systems: single-slot (S-S) and two-slots (T-S). The computation provides a better understanding of the influence of these flow... [more]

Keywords: co-located offshore renewable energies, piezoelectricity, tidal power, wind power
The ocean is approximately 71% of the Earth’s surface and has a lot of resources available. Nowadays, human beings are looking for renewable ways to obtain energy. Offshore power can be obtained in several different ways. Offshore wind power is the most used renewable offshore energy. Since 2017, offshore wind power has a competitive price in comparison with conventional sources. In the 2010s, offshore wind power grew at over 30% per year. Although it has remained less than one percent of the overall world electricity generation, offshore wind power becomes quite relevant on the northern European countries from 2020. However, there are other ways to obtain energy offshore such as using tides and the sun. These types of farms are expensive and difficult to install and, therefore, we propose a combination of several renewable energies in one farm. The main ambition of this work is to try to reduce the installation and maintenance costs of the two types of offshore renewable energies by c... [more]
