Lars Lindgren, Anders Grauers, Jonas Ranggård, Rikard Mäki
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery-electric vehicle, cost, drive cycle, electric road, electric vehicle, haul truck, heavy-duty vehicle, mining, mining truck, trolley
Transport of ore and overburden in open-pit mines is often performed with large haul trucks. Battery-electric operation of haul trucks can significantly reduce the CO2 emissions and the fossil fuel dependence of open-pit mining. This simulation study investigates the feasibility and economy of operating large haul trucks battery-electrically, charging from an electric road system in the form of overhead trolley lines. The used simulation model is verified against measurements on diesel-electric haul trucks in normal operation. The simulation model is then tested with five drive cycles representing typical operations in the Aitik copper mine in northern Sweden. This simulation study shows that battery-electric operation with an electric road is feasible. It is shown that battery-electric operation is much cheaper than diesel-electric operation under reasonable assumptions. It is also much cheaper than diesel-electric operation assisted by an electric road.

Sławomir Gryś, Waldemar Minkina
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active thermography, heat transfer theory, infrared thermography, non-destructive evaluation, non-destructive testing, thermovision measurements
The field of non-destructive testing using thermography (NDT—Non-Destructive Testing and NDE—Non Destructive Evaluation) was established in the 1960s as a competitive and complementary method to ultrasonic or X-ray testing. Non-destructive quality control of objects is essential in modern industry, especially in mass production. It is an integral part of the quality control process. The reason for the introduction of non-destructive testing into diagnostic techniques were disasters and failures of various equipment and structures. Over the years, a division has been drawn between passive and active thermography. The aim of this publication is to present the theoretical basis of non-destructive testing with the use of active infrared thermography methods. It describes selected models of transient heat flow (thermal wave) in objects of various shapes and physical properties. They are the basis for understanding the changes in the surface temperature of the studied objects in time, which... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: rolling motion, subchannel, subcooled flow boiling, transverse flow, VOF
The marine environment may change the force on the fluid and inevitably influence bubble behavior and the two-phase flow in the reactor core, which are vital to the safety margin of a nuclear reactor. To explore the effect of the marine motion on the flow and heat transfer features of subcooled flow boiling in the reactor core, the volume of fluid (VOF) method is employed to reveal the interaction between the interface structure and two-phase flow in the subchannel under rolling motion. The variations of several physical parameters are obtained, including the transverse flow, the vapor volume fraction, the vapor adhesion ratio, and the phase distribution of boiling two-phase flow with time. Sensitivity analyses of the amplitude and the period of the rolling motion were performed to demonstrate the mechanisms of the influence of the rolling motion. We found that the transverse flow in the subchannel was mainly affected by the Euler force under the rolling motion. In contrast to the two-... [more]

Baolong Liu, Jianxing Yu
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic response, FOWT, SPAR, wave group, wave-body interaction
Numerical simulations are performed within the time domain to investigate the dynamic behaviors of an SPAR-type FOWT under wave group conditions. Towards this goal, the OC3 Hywind SPAR-type FOWT is adopted, and a JONSWAP (Joint North Sea Wave Project)-based wave group is generated by the envelope amplitude approach. The FOWT motion under wave group conditions, as well as the aerodynamic, hydrodynamic, and mooring performances, is simulated by our established in-house code. The rotating blades are modelled by the blade element momentum theory. The wave-body interaction effect is calculated by the three-dimensional potential theory. The mooring dynamics are also taken into consideration. According to the numerical results, the SPAR buoy motions are slightly increased by the wave group, while the heave motion is significantly amplified. Both the aerodynamic performance and the mooring tension are also influenced by the wave group. Furthermore, the low-frequency resonant response could be... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: harmonic modelling, harmonics analysis, interleaved SPWM, loop-shaping technique, MVDC converters
Today’s power distribution networks are predicted to incorporate more Power Electronics (PE)-based power conversion systems, widely acknowledged as harmonic sources. Concerns about power harmonic severity in the distribution networks can arise, especially with the growing numbers of Medium Voltage Direct Current (MVDC) systems, which are also facilitated by such power converters. Yet, an accurate harmonic model of the MVDC converter is required to investigate its harmonic emissions, propagations, effects, and solutions in today’s distribution networks. This article is devoted to the development of a detailed model of a cascaded Neutral Point-Clamped (NPC)-based MVDC converter for accurate harmonic analysis studies. An appropriate control system with a simple Proportional Integral (PI) controller tuned using the loop-shaping technique is developed. An interleaved Sinusoidal Pulse-Width Modulation (SPWM) scheme aiming to improve the harmonic performance of such an application is introduc... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: heavy metals, MSWI fly ash, PCDD/Fs
Municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash contains highly toxic heavy metals and polychlorinated dibenzo dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs), which are a type of hazardous waste. The pollution characteristics of fly ash have changed with the development of stoker grate incinerators and the fly ash treatment technology; however, no research has been focused on this in recent years. In this study, 12 fly ash samples were collected from 9 grate power plants in southeastern China, and their PCDD/Fs and heavy metal concentrations were determined and compared to previous fly ash data. The PCDD/Fs concentration in fly ash was in the range of 0.002−0.051 ngI-TEQ/g, with an average of 0.027 ngI-TEQ/g. Furthermore, 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDD and OCDD made the most significant contributions to PCDDs. The distribution of 10 dioxins exhibited bimodal, unimodal, and normal characteristics. Linear fitting demonstrated a strong correlation between toxicity and 1,2,3,7,8-PentaCDD, 1,2,3,7,8-PentaCDF, and 2,3,4,7... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: Energy Conversion, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, silicides, thermoelectricity, waste heat recovery
Most primary energy sources, such as the fossil fuels of oil, coal, and natural gas, produce waste heat. Recycling of this unused thermal energy is necessary in order to increase the efficiency of usage. Thermoelectric (TE) conversion technologies, by which waste heat is directly converted into electricity, have been extensively studied, and the development of these technologies has continued. TE power-generation has attracted significant attention for use in self-powered wireless sensors, which are important for our increasingly sophisticated information society. For the middle-temperature range (i.e., 600−900 K), with applications such as automobiles, intensive studies of high-performance TE materials have been conducted. In this study, we review our recent experimental and theoretical studies on alkaline-earth silicide Mg2Si TE materials, which consist of nontoxic abundant earth elements. We demonstrate improvements in TE performance brought about by lightly doping Mg2Si with isoele... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: additives, cyclohexane, high-speed imaging, propagation, streamer
Liquid insulation is used in high voltage equipment such as power transformers as both dielectric medium and coolant. Breakdown in liquid insulation tends to be governed either by streamer initiation under more uniform fields, or by streamer propagation under more non-uniform fields. A model streamer propagation study, which screens the effectiveness of additives based on cyclohexane and mixtures with diethylaniline (DEA) and toluene, is presented in this paper. The effect of additives, at different concentrations, on streamer propagation velocity in cyclohexane under an applied lightning impulse voltage of positive polarity is studied. Cyclohexane (ionisation potential 9.88 eV) was chosen because, being a hydrocarbon, it shares similarities with the constituents of common insulating liquids. Previous studies have also shown how, in general, the addition of additives of lower ionization potential than the bulk liquid can slow down streamer propagation in insulating liquids. A point-pla... Keywords: air conditioner, cold storage, Computational Fluid Dynamics, convenience store, energy consumption
The energy use intensity (EUI) of convenience stores was substantially higher than that of office buildings and hotels, due to a compact footprint but a high density of equipment yielded a higher EUI. As a result, it is critical to assess and maintain the state of the convenience store in order to obtain a lower EUI and reduce energy consumption. This study utilizes a convenience store to evaluate energy consumption and perform a CFD simulation to see how the environment influences by cold storage showcase (CSS) equipment. On the basis of field testing and on-site web-based monitoring data, a survey of baseline information through data collecting and energy benchmarking data has been provided and extensively examined. According to energy monitoring, the convenience store’s highest electricity use is 23,055 kWh in June, and the lowest power consumption is 15,216 kWh in February. The CFD simulation results revealed that the temperature near the CSS can be 3−5 °C lower than in other regio... [more]
Nonlinear Self-Synchronizing Current Control for Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Inverters
Moath Alqatamin, Michael L. McIntyre
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: grid angle estimation, photovoltaic system, self-synchronization current control
Three-phase inverters for photovoltaic grid-connected applications typically require some form of grid voltage phase-angle detection in order to properly synchronize to the grid and control real and reactive power generation. Typically, a phase-locked loop scheme is used to determine this real-time phase angle information. However, in the present work, a novel method is proposed whereby the phase angle of the grid can be accurately identified solely via the grid current feedback. This phase-angle observer is incorporated into a current controller which can manage the real and reactive power of the grid-connected PV inverter system. Moreover, the maximum power point of the photovoltaic arrays is achieved without using a DC−DC converter. The proposed method achieves the grid current and DC-link voltage control objectives without the knowledge of the grid information and without the need for a cascaded control scheme. The design of this combined observer/controller scheme is motivated and... [more]

Keywords: automation, electric/hybrid vehicles, lithium-ion battery, recycling, robots
Manual disassembly of the lithium-ion battery (LIB) modules of electric vehicles (EVs) for recycling is time-consuming, expensive, and dangerous for technicians or workers. Dangers associated with high voltage and thermal runaway make a robotic system suitable for the automated or semi-automated disassembly of EV batteries. In this paper, we explore battery disassembly using industrial robots. To understand the disassembly process, human workers were monitored, and the operations were analyzed and broken down into gripping and cutting operations. These operations were selected for automation, and path planning was performed offline. For the gripper, a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) control system was implemented. A system identification method was also implemented in the form of a batch least squares estimator to form the state space representation of the planar linkages used in the control strategy of the gripper. A high-speed rotary cut-off wheel was adapted for the robot to perfor... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: antlion optimization (ALO), cuckoo search (CS), hybrid optimization, static var compensator (SVC)
Worldwide, due to the abrupt growth of population, the load demand has been rising dramatically in the last few years. This led to an increase in branch overloads, voltage deviations, and power losses. These problems may result in line outages or the occurrence of blackouts. Flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices can be installed in the power system to ensure increased power flow capability and flexible voltage control to address these issues. In this paper, one of the most used FACTS is utilised. It is called Static VAR Compensator (SVC). This controller is one of the most commonly used shunt FACTS controllers due to its low cost in comparison to others, ease of operation, and integration into the power grid. Two Optimization algorithms are combined to form a hybrid optimization approach: Cuckoo Search (CS) and Antlion Optimization (ALO). This hybrid approach employs the exploration of ALO to adjust the optimum allocation and size for SVCs in the power system. This study prop... [more]
Adaptive Sliding-Mode Control for Electric Spring in Microgrids with Distributed Renewable Energy
Fagen Yin, Chun Wang, Weizhang Wang
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive prediction, electric spring (ES), microgrid, sliding mode controller, voltage stability
Electric springs (ESs) are novel electric-power devices that alleviate power-quality problems such as voltage fluctuations induced by grid access to renewable energy resources. However, with the continuous increase of uncertain factors such as parameter perturbation and external disturbance, the environment becomes more complicated, so traditional linear controllers for ESs are finding it increasingly difficult to meet the control requirements due to narrow stability regions, low precision, and poor robustness. To overcome this problem, we propose herein a control method that combines adaptive control and sliding-mode control and apply it to ESs. First, an inexact model of the ES system was established and analyzed. Next, an ES control system was designed based on adaptive sliding-mode control, and then the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is proven. Finally, the proposed control system was verified through a MATLAB simulation. The results show that adaptive sliding-mode... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: constructal theory, dual-pressure steam turbine, optimal structure design, power output, steam Rankine cycle, thermal efficiency
A one-dimensional dual-pressure steam turbine (ST) model for the marine Rankine cycle is built in this paper. Based on constructal theory, the optimal design of the dual-pressure ST is performed with a fixed total volume of the high- and low-pressure STs. The total power output (PO) of the dual-pressure ST is maximized. Seventeen parameters, including the dimensionless average diameters (DADs) of the stages, steam inlet angles (SIAs) of the stages, average reaction degrees (ARDs) of the stages, and volume ratio of the high-pressure ST are taken as optimization variables. The optimal structure parameters of the stages are gained. It reveals that the total PO of the dual-pressure ST is increased by 2.59% by optimizing the average diameter of the Curtis stage, and the change in the total PO is not obvious by optimizing the average diameter of the third stage of the low-pressure ST. Both the total PO and the corresponding efficiency of the dual-pressure ST are increased by 10.8% after simu... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: maximum torque per ampere, model reference adaptive system, permanent magnet synchronous motor, virtual signal injection control
The high-frequency signal injection-type maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) algorithm is usually employed to control the operation of interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs). The MTPA algorithm exhibits good dynamic performance and anti-interference ability. However, due to the injection of a high-frequency current signal, problems such as torque ripple and additional loss are encountered. Therefore, in this paper, a virtual signal injection control (VSIC) method that does not require actual injection is proposed for solving the aforementioned problems while yielding good performance. However, in the control process of the proposed method, the d-axis inductance parameter affects the accuracy of the torque information, resulting in errors in the system. To solve this problem, an online identification algorithm of model reference adaptive systems (MRAS) based on the Popov super stability theory as the basis for the design of the adaptive law is proposed in this paper. Keywords: AHP, fusion reactor, PSA, reliability allocation
Reasonable and feasible reliability index allocation is significant for improving safety and reducing costs for fusion reactors. Although the reliability index is allocated when designing some key systems, reliability allocation is not implemented from the overall layer to the system and component layers for fusion reactors. In this contribution, fusion reactors are divided into different layers by applying the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP); these layers include the overall layer, system layer and component layer, failure mode layer, etc. Combining the Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) model for fusion reactors and AHP, the reliability index is allocated from the overall layer to the system and component layer. Firstly, a new reliability index allocation method based on PSA and AHP for fusion reactors is proposed. Secondly, the PSA model for an in-vessel LOCA accident of fusion reactors is selected as a case study to demonstrate the applications of the proposed method. Lastly, t... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: counterrotating vortex pair, double rows film cooling, forward and backward jets, mixing mechanism, simplified thermal Boltzmann method
Film cooling has been widely applied to the highly efficient thermal protection of gas turbines. By using the simplified thermal lattice Boltzmann method (STLBM), a series of large-scale simulations of film cooling are performed to dig up the mixing mechanism of double rows film cooling with the combination of forward and backward jets at the first attempt. The combination of an upstream row with forward jet and a downstream row with backward jet is considered. The Reynolds number is 4000. The blowing ratio of the upstream coolant jet is fixed as BR1=0.5. For the downstream coolant jet (BR2), five values ranging from 0.2−0.8 are considered. The inclination angles of forward jet and backward jet are 35° and 145°, respectively. The numerical results reveal that the performance of film cooling is greatly improved by backward downstream jet due to the suppression of counterrotating vortex pair (CVP). Moreover, the flow structure is changed with the blowing ratio of backward jet. An anti-CV... [more]
