Ensemble Methods for Jump-Diffusion Models of Power Prices
Carlo Mari, Cristiano Baldassari
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: anomaly detection, isolation forest, jump-diffusion dynamics, Machine Learning, mean-reversion, missForest, power prices, spikes
We propose a machine learning-based methodology which makes use of ensemble methods with the aims (i) of treating missing data in time series with irregular observation times and detecting anomalies in the observed time behavior; (ii) of defining suitable models of the system dynamics. We applied this methodology to US wholesale electricity price time series that are characterized by missing data, high and stochastic volatility, jumps and pronounced spikes. For missing data, we provide a repair approach based on the missForest algorithm, an imputation algorithm which is completely agnostic about the data distribution. To identify anomalies, i.e., turbulent movements of power prices in which jumps and spikes are observed, we took into account the no-gap reconstructed electricity price time series, and then we detected anomalous regions using the isolation forest algorithm, an anomaly detection method that isolates anomalies instead of profiling normal data points as in the most common t... Reducing Energy Consumption and Increasing the Performances of AC Motor Drives Using Fuzzy PI Speed Controllers
Constantin Volosencu
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: AC drives, brushless motors, digital control of AC drives, fuzzy PI controllers, induction motors, nonlinear control, permanent magnet synchronous motors, robust control
Alternating current electric drives are widely used in many commercial applications. Increasing energy efficiency and improving the quality of regulation are major goals. The speed control structure of the induction machine with indirect vector control with rotor flux orientation and the speed control structure of the permanent magnet synchronous machine with vector control with rotor flux orientation are taken into account. The control structures were modeled and simulated in Simulink. Different simulation regimes were made for different load torques and different parameters. Following the analyses performed, it was highlighted that the fuzzy regulation ensures the reduction of the energy consumption in transient states and the improvement in the quality indicators of the regulation. The fuzzy control systems are robust to the errors of identification of the machine parameters and to the effect of the disturbing load torque.
Frequency Containment Control of Hydropower Plants Using Different Adaptive Methods

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: frequency containment control, hydropower plant, Lyapunov stability, MIT rule, model reference adaptive control, speed governor
With the growth in the share of variable renewable energy sources, fluctuations in the power generation caused by these types of power plants can diminish the stability and flexibility of the grid. These two can be enhanced by applying frequency containment using hydropower plants as an operational reserve. The frequency containment in hydropower plants is automatically controlled by speed governors within seconds. Disturbances such as fluctuations in the net head and aging may diminish the performance of the controllers of the speed governors. In this study, model reference adaptive control approaches based on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) rule and Lyapunov method were exploited in order to improve the performance of the speed governor for frequency containment control. The active power control with frequency control was enhanced by the aforementioned adaptive control methods. A mathematical model of a hydropower plant with a surge tank and medium penstock was constr... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: activity-based simulation, charging power demand, electric vehicle, open data, spatial temporal distribution, transportation electrification
With continuous proliferation of private battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in urban regions, the demand for electrical energy and power is constantly increasing. Electrical grid infrastructure operators are facing the question of where and to what extent they need to expand their infrastructure in order to meet the additional demand. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to develop an activity-based mobility model that supports electrical grid operators in detecting and evaluating possible overloads within the electrical grid, deriving from the aforementioned electrification. We apply our model, which fully relies on open data, to the urban area of Berlin. In addition to a household travel survey, statistics on the population density, the degree of motorisation, and the household income in fine spatial resolution are key data sources for generation of the model. The results show that the spatial distribution of the BEV charging energy demand is highly heterogeneous. The demand per capita... [more]

Ariadna Carrobé, Lídia Rincón, Ingrid Martorell
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: earthen architecture, earthen building technique, monitoring, Simulation, thermal comfort, thermal inertia
Since ancient times, raw earth has been used worldwide as a construction material. Today, it is well known for its good environmental properties of recyclability and low embodied energy along the production process. Earthen walls regulate the interior temperature of the buildings, providing comfortable temperatures with a very low carbon footprint. As a result of those advantages, earthen building techniques have been revived and used for contemporary architecture. The aim of this paper is to review the state of the art about the thermal behaviour of earthen building, including all the monitoring and simulation analysis of real earthen constructions up to now. The paper presents the different earthen techniques known nowadays, analysing the most important thermal parameters and the thermal comfort achieved with each technique. Regardless the wide differences among the analyzed cases, the authors conclude that earth building is a suitable solution in hot and arid climates, since it pres... [more]
An Integrated Approach to Adaptive Control and Supervisory Optimisation of HVAC Control Systems for Demand Response Applications
Akinkunmi Adegbenro, Michael Short, Claudio Angione
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive control, demand response, HVAC, MPC, optimisation, smart energy
Heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems account for a large percentage of energy consumption in buildings. Implementation of efficient optimisation and control mechanisms has been identified as one crucial way to help reduce and shift HVAC systems’ energy consumption to both save economic costs and foster improved integration with renewables. This has led to the development of various control techniques, some of which have produced promising results. However, very few of these control mechanisms have fully considered important factors such as electricity time of use (TOU) price information, occupant thermal comfort, computational complexity, and nonlinear HVAC dynamics to design a demand response schema. In this paper, a novel two-stage integrated approach for such is proposed and evaluated. A model predictive control (MPC)-based optimiser for supervisory setpoint control is integrated with a digital parameter-adaptive controller for use in a demand response/demand ma... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: multi-stack, segSRM, speed control, SRM converter, switched reluctance motor, torque ripple reduction
This paper presents a detailed literature review on switched reluctance motor (SRM) and drive systems in electric vehicle (EV) powertrains. SRMs have received increasing attention for EV applications owing to their reliable structure, fault tolerance ability and magnet free design. The main drawbacks of the SRM are torque ripple, low power density, low power factor and small extended speed range. Recent research shows that multi-stack conventional switched reluctance motors (MSCSRM) and multi-stack switched reluctance motors with a segmental rotor (MSSRM-SR) are promising alternative solutions to reduce torque ripples, increase torque density and increase power factor. Different winding configurations such as single-layer concentrated winding (SLC), single layer mutually coupled winding (SLMC), double layer concentrated winding (DLC), double layer mutually coupled winding (DLMC) and fully-pitched winding (FP) are introduced in the literature in recent years to increase average torque a... April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: anergy, Coefficient of performance (COP), Energy, Exergy, heat pump
The aim of this scientific research is to experimentally determine the exergy losses of a ground heat pump and further optimization for more efficient use of operating modes and improvement of individual structural elements. In addition, it is proposed to use photovoltaic panels as a backup power source for the experimental installation under study. The exergetic losses are calculated, not only for the ground heat pump itself, with R407C refrigerant. The research methodology consists in a comprehensive assessment of exergetic flows, their optimization using new methods of approximation of piecewise linear functions, and the development of prerequisites for the use of anergy as one of the components of a new type of analysis of the efficiency of low-potential energy sources. As a result of processing the experimental data, the values of Coefficient of performance (COP) 4.136, exergetic temperature for the lower heat source 0.0253 and for the upper heat source 0.155, exergetic efficiency... Bifacial Photovoltaics 2021: Status, Opportunities and Challenges
Radovan Kopecek, Joris Libal
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bifacial, energy yield, photovoltaics
In this paper we summarize the status of bifacial photovoltaics (PV) and explain why the move to bifaciality is unavoidable when it comes to e.g., lowest electricity generation costs or agricultural PV (AgriPV). Bifacial modules—those that are sensitive to light incident from both sides—are finally available at the same price per watt peak as their standard monofacial equivalents. The reason for this is that bifacial solar cells are the result of an evolution of crystalline Si PV cell technology and, at the same time, module producers are increasingly switching to double glass modules anyway due to the improved module lifetimes, which allows them to offer longer product warrantees. We describe the general properties of the state-of-the-art bifacial module, review the different bifacial solar cells and module technologies available on the market, and summarize their average costs. Adding complexity to a module comes with the increase of possible degradation mechanisms, requiring more th... [more]
The Effects of Hydropower Plants on the Physicochemical Parameters of the Bystrzyca River in Poland
Paweł Tomczyk, Mirosław Wiatkowski
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: energy policy, environmental impacts, hydropower plants, physicochemical parameters, renewable energy sources, sustainable development, water quality
Currently, the literature lacks comprehensive studies on the impact of hydropower plants (HPs) on the environment, including studies focused on the physicochemical parameters of water. The aim of the article is to verify the current state of knowledge on the impact of run-of-river HPs on 17 physicochemical parameters of water. The article is in line with the recommendations of the European Union that the member states, under the common energy policy, should increase the share of renewable energy sources in the energy and perform environmental impact assessments of such facilities. As a result of the analysis carried out on three HPs (Sadowice, Skałka and Marszowice) located on the Bystrzyca River (a tributary of the Odra River in Poland), it was found that HPs affect the selected physicochemical parameters of the water, i.e., (p < 0.05): electrolytic conductivity (EC; Skałka, Marszowice HPs), pH (Skałka, Marszowice HPs); nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N; Marszowice HP), dissolved oxygen (DO; Ma... April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: bubble generation, carbon nanohorns, nanofluids, optical limiting, solar energy, vapor generation
Nonlinear optical properties of aqueous dispersions of single-wall carbon nanohorns (SWCNH) are investigated by a simple and original technique, relating nonlinear transmittance measurements with semi-empirical model fitting and allowing to identify the dominant nonlinear mechanism. The nanofluids shown a particularly strong optical limiting under irradiation by nanosecond laser pulses at 355, 532 and 1064 nm, much stronger than that previously reported in SWCNHs with smaller aggregate size. The effect is more relevant at 355 nm, where a nearly ideal optical limiting behavior with output energy practically independent on the input one is obtained, and it is attributed to the massive production of bubbles under the effect of light irradiation. This result opens interesting perspectives for the use of SWNCH-based suspensions for smart materials applications and green energy.
The Future Role of Forest-Based Biofuels: Industrial Impacts in the Nordic Countries

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biofuel, forest sector model, harvest residues, partial equilibrium
This study applies a partial equilibrium forest sector model to analyse the impacts of biofuel deployment for road transport in the Nordic countries, when alternative use of the biomass resources and transport sector electrification are considered. We foresee a strong electrification of the transport sector, resulting in a demand for biofuels of approximately 2.5 billion L in 2035 and 1 billion L in 2050 in a 100% fossil-free base scenario. The simultaneous increase in demand from pulping industries and biofuel will cause an overall increase in wood use, of which the biofuels share will constitute approximately 20−25%. The utilization of harvest residues will increase more than 300% compared to the current level, since biofuel production will reallocate some of the current raw material used in district heating. Biofuel consumption in road transport will likely reduce after 2040 due to increasing electrification, but it is plausible that the declining domestic demand will be replaced by... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biogas, energy recovery, Fermentation, organic waste, soil amendment, waste to energy
This study investigated the applied methods for the collection and treatment of an organic fraction of municipal solid waste with anaerobic digestion (AD), including the effects of selective waste collection system introduction. As the research area, data from a waste treatment plant, which collects waste from about 260,000 inhabitants, was used as the selected waste management plan. Biowaste stream management was emphasized. Thus, research on energy recovery and the characteristics of digestate (nutrient and heavy metals content) obtained from biowaste AD was performed. The results of the studies and their quantitative data were interpreted. A significant discrepancy between the assumptions and the actual situation was revealed (up to 20% year-on-year regarding biowaste). An underestimation of the amount of waste when planning was noted. AD ensures energy recovery from biowaste, which can cover facility electricity needs and material recovery. The digestate might find agricultural usa... [more]

The problem of high power consumption in data centers is becoming more and more prominent. In order to improve the energy efficiency of data centers, cooperatively optimizing the energy of IT systems and cooling systems has become an effective way. In this paper, a model-free deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based joint optimization method MAD3C is developed to overcome the high-dimensional state and action space problems of the data center energy optimization. A hybrid AC-DDPG cooperative multi-agent framework is devised for the improvement of the cooperation between the IT and cooling systems for further energy efficiency improvement. In the framework, a scheduling baseline comparison method is presented to enhance the stability of the framework. Meanwhile, an adaptive score is designed for the architecture in consideration of multi-dimensional resources and resource utilization improvement. Experiments show that our proposed approach can effectively reduce energy for data centers t... [more]

Keywords: Duvernay shale, EDFM, huff-n-puff, sensitivity analysis, volatile oil
Duvernay shale is a world class shale deposit with a total resource of 440 billion barrels oil equivalent in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB). The volatile oil recovery factors achieved from primary production are much lower than those from the gas-condensate window, typically 5−10% of original oil in place (OOIP). The previous study has indicated that huff-n-puff gas injection is one of the most promising enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods in shale oil reservoirs. In this paper, we built a comprehensive numerical compositional model in combination with the embedded discrete fracture model (EDFM) method to evaluate geological and engineering controls on gas huff-n-puff in Duvernay shale volatile oil reservoirs. Multiple scenarios of compositional simulations of huff-n-puff gas injection for the proposed twelve parameters have been conducted and effects of reservoir, completion and depletion development parameters on huff-n-puff are evaluated. We concluded that fracture cond... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: condensers, heat transfer coefficient, minichannels pressure drop, Optimization, refrigeration, SIMUS
This paper proposes a methodology aiming at determining the most influent working variables and geometrical parameters over the pressure drop and heat transfer during the condensation process of several refrigerant gases using heat exchangers with pipes mini channels technology. A multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methodology was used; this MCDM includes a mathematical method called SIMUS (Sequential Interactive Modelling for Urban Systems) that was applied to the results of 2543 tests obtained by using a designed refrigeration rig in which five different refrigerants (R32, R134a, R290, R410A and R1234yf) and two different tube geometries were tested. This methodology allows us to reduce the computational cost compared to the use of neural networks or other model development systems. This research shows six variables out of 39 that better define simultaneously the minimum pressure drop, as well as the maximum heat transfer, saturation pressure fluid entering the condenser being the... April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ECRH, gyrotrons, ITER, lumped model, magnetron injection gun
In the framework of the ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) project, one of the key components of the reactor is the ECRH (Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating). This system has the duty to heat the plasma inside the tokamak, using high frequency and power radio waves, produced by sets of 1MW gyrotrons. One of the main issues related to the gyrotron operation is the output power drop that happens right after the beginning of a pulse. In this work, we study the underlying phenomena that cause the power drop, focusing on the gyrotron’s MIG (Magnetron Injection Gun) of the 1MW, 170 GHz European Gyrotron prototype for ITER. It is shown how the current emission and the temperature of the emitter are tightly bound, and how their interaction causes the power drop, observed experimentally. Furthermore, a simple yet effective lumped-parameter model to describe the MIG’s cathode thermal dynamics is developed, which is able to predict the power output of the gyrotron by simula... [more]
Large Eddy Simulation of Film Cooling with Forward Expansion Hole: Comparative Study with LES and RANS Simulations
Seung Il Baek, Jaiyoung Ryu, Joon Ahn
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: film cooling, forward-expansion hole, large eddy simulation, Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes
The forward expansion hole improves the film cooling effectiveness by reducing the penetration of the coolant jet into the main flow compared to the cylindrical holes. In addition, compound angles improve the film cooling effectiveness by promoting the lateral spreading of the coolant on a wall. Evidently, the combination of a compound angle and shaped hole further improves the adiabatic film cooling effectiveness. The film cooling flow with a shaped hole with 15° forward expansion, a 35° inclination angle, and 0° and 30° compound angles at 0.5 and 1.0 blowing ratios was numerically simulated with Large Eddy Simulations (LES) and Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes (RANS) simulations. The results of the time-averaged film cooling effectiveness, temperature, velocity, and root-mean-square (rms) values of the fluctuating velocity and temperature profiles were compared with the experimental data by Lee et al. (2002) to verify how the LES improves the results compared to those of the RANS. For... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: electrochromic, ionic storage layer, nickel, vanadium pentoxide
The electrochromic property of nickel doped vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) deposited by a co-sputtering system is investigated. The structural analysis of the thin film was done by an X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyzer. The surface morphology of the film was studied by a field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The composition of the film was detected by an Auger analysis. The electrochromic properties of the device were measured by cyclic voltammetry. For the undoped V2O5 thin film, the charge storage capacity increases with the thickness and is 42.58 mC/cm2 at the thickness of 192.4 nm after 2 h deposition. For the Ni-doped V2O5, the Ni-V-O film shows V2O5 structural dominate with cathode coloration in the lower Ni deposition power region and the charge storage capacity decreases with the increases of the power, while the Ni-V-O film transfers to NiO structural dominate with anodic coloration at the realm of higher Ni doping. The charge storage capacity increases with the incre... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: interest, oilseed cover crops, pennycress, willingness to grow
Pennycress can be used as a renewable biomass because its harvested seeds can be converted into biofuel, supplying, for example the aviation industry. Pennycress can be adopted as a winter cover crop to make extra profit in addition to summer cash crops. This study ascertains influences on row crop farmers’ interest in growing pennycress to supply a biofuels industry. The study uses data from a survey of row-crop farmers in seven US states. Effects of farm and farmer attributes on acceptance of a farmgate pennycress price are measured. Nearly 58% were interested in growing pennycress if profitable. Among those interested, 54.4% would accept the farmgate pennycress price offered. Positive influences on interest included farm size, education, and familiarity with pennycress, while concern about knowledge on growing pennycress, and use of no-till practices had negative influences. Farmers aged 40 to 65 were more likely to accept the price, while share of rented hectares and no debt had po... [more]
A Fundamental Study on the Development of New Energy Performance Index in Office Buildings

Keywords: building energy, curtain wall building, EnergyPlus, window properties, window-to-floor ratio
Recently, there have been significant concerns regarding excessive energy use in office buildings with a large window-to-wall ratio (WWR) because of the curtain wall structure. However, prior research has confirmed that the impact of the window area on energy consumption varies depending on building size. A newly proposed window-to-floor ratio (WFR) correlates better with energy consumption in the building. In this paper, we derived the correlation by analyzing a simulation using EnergyPlus, and the results are as follows. In the case of small buildings, the results of this study showed that the WWR and energy requirement increase proportionally, and the smaller the size is, the higher the energy sensitivity will be. However, results also confirmed that this correlation was not established for buildings approximately 3600 m2 or larger. Nevertheless, from analyzing the correlation between the WFR and the energy requirements, it could be deduced that energy required increased proportiona... [more]

Keywords: anisotropy, hydrocarbon, inversion, polarization, signal processing, unconventional, VSP
In this paper, we present a detailed analysis of walkaway vertical seismic profiling (VSP) data, which can be used to obtain Thomsen parameters using P-wave-only inversion. Data acquisition took place in difficult field conditions, which influenced the quality of the data. Therefore, this paper also shows a seismic data processing scheme that allows the estimation of correct polarization angles despite poor input data quality. Moreover, we showed that it is possible to obtain reliable and detailed values of Thomsen’s anisotropy parameters for data that are challenging due to extremely difficult field conditions during acquisition and the presence of an overburden of salt and anhydrite (Zechstein formation). This complex is known for its strong seismic signal-attenuating properties. We designed a special processing workflow with a signal-matching procedure that allows reliable estimation of polarization angles for low-quality data. Additionally, we showed that P-wave-only inversion for... [more]
Aerodynamic Effect of the Gurney Flap on the Front Wing of a F1 Car and Flow Interactions with Car Components

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, front wing, gurney flap, racing car
The design of a racing car needs several aerodynamic design steps in order to achieve high performance. Each component has an aerodynamic interaction with the others and high performance requires a good match between them. The front wing is undoubtedly one of the main components to determine car performance with a strong interaction with the downstream components. The Gurney Flap (GF) is a small appendix perpendicular to the pressure side of the front wing at the trailing edge that can dramatically improve the front wing performance. In the literature, the performance of a GF on a single profile is well documented, while in this paper the GF mounted on the front wing of a racing car has been investigated and the interactions through the 3D flow structures are discussed. The global drag and downforce performance on the main components of the vehicle have been examined by comparing the cases with and without a GF. The GF increases the downforce by about 24% compared to a limited increase... [more]

Keywords: coulomb friction-regularized model, dynamic response of bridges, experimental modal identification, FE model tuning, mining-triggered seismicity, sliding bearing modeling
In this paper, a two-step tuning strategy of a finite element (FE) model of a bridge with pot bearings exposed to mining-triggered tremors of various intensities is proposed. In the study, a reinforced concrete bridge 160 m long is considered. Once the modal identification of the bridge was experimentally carried out based on low-energy ambient vibrations, the FE model was tuned by replacing the free-bearing sliding with a Coulomb friction-regularized model. This model of friction split the tangential relative displacement rates between contacting surfaces into a reversible elastic part and irreversible sliding. The elastic microslip (spring-like behavior) prior to macrosliding can be explained by the deformation of asperities (roughness of contacting surfaces on the microscopic scale). The proposed model allows for accurate sliding bearing performance simulation under both low-energy and high-energy mining-induced tremors. In the first step of the FE model tuning strategy, the elastic... [more]
