How US Suppliers Alter Their Extraction Rates and What This Means for Peak Oil Theory
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: COVID-19, depletion, energy security, energy transition, extraction rates, Hubbert, oil, peak oil, production, productivity
Hubbert suggests that oil extraction rates will have an exponentially increasing course until they reach their highest level and then they will suddenly decline. This best describes the well-acclaimed Peak Oil Theory or Peak Oil. We research whether the theory is validated in seven US plays after the shale revolution. We do so by applying two well-established methodologies for asset bubble detection in capital markets on productivity rates per day (bbl/d). Our hypothesis is that if there is a past or an ongoing oil extraction rate peak then Hubbert’s model is verified. If there are multiple episodes of productivity peaks, then it is rejected. We find that the Peak Theory is not confirmed and that shale production mainly responds to demand signals. Therefore, the oil production curve is flattened prolonging oil dependency and energy transition. Since the US production is free of geological constraints, then maximum productivity may not ever be reached due to lower demand levels. Past ma... [more]

Delay Causes and Types in Nigerian Power Construction Projects
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: compensable delay, concurrent delay, critical delay, delay cause, delay types, excusable delay
Numerous events cause delays to entire power projects’ completion timelines, leading to loss. This paper focuses on revealing the critical delay causes in Nigerian power projects and identifying the delay types such as excusable delay, compensable delay, critical delay, and concurrent delay from the different perspectives of owner and contractor. Based on the survey of the 84 industrial experts in power distribution and transmission projects in Nigeria, this study provides the mean score and rank of 39 delay causes. Among the causes, 14 are identified as critical in the Nigerian power project. The top three critical delay causes are corruption and bureaucracy in government, inadequate fund/budget allocation, and price fluctuation/inflation. Owner and contractor do not show the difference in classifying the 14 delay causes into excusable and compensable delays. However, there was a difference between owner and contractor in categorizing whether a cause is critical or not and concurrent... [more]

Influence of Ester Liquids on Dielectric Strength of Cellulose Kraft Paper
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cellulose paper, dielectric strength, ester fluids, insulating oil
Generally, impregnation of solid insulation is performed to increase the dielectric strength and reduce the dielectric losses of solid insulants. This increase in dielectric strength depends on the oil’s diffusion and dielectric properties. This paper investigates the diffusion behavior of mineral oil and ester fluids (synthetic, natural, and mixed) to understand the influence of oil diffusion on paper breakdown voltage. To better understand this phenomenal influence, cellulose insulation paper of different thicknesses has been considered. Wetting characteristics of various oil-paper insulation systems were investigated with and without thermal stressing. Thermal aging was carried out as per modified ASTM D1934 at 110 °C, 140 °C, 160 °C, and 185 °C respectively for 2 weeks. The wetting characteristics and influence of different oils on paper breakdown voltage were explicitly reported. It is inferred that paper wetting characteristics are attributable to the type of oil, the thickness o... [more]

Analytic Model of Threshold Voltage (VTH) Recovery in Fully Recessed Gate MOS-Channel HEMT (High Electron Mobility Transistor) after OFF-State Drain Stress
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: alumina, charges, gallium nitride, MIS-Gate, normally-off, recovery, threshold voltage, traps
Today, wide bandgap (WBG) GaN semiconductors are considered the future, allowing the improvement of power transistors. The main advantage of GaN is the presence of two-dimensional electron gas (2Deg) typically used as a conduction layer in normally-on and normally-off transistors. Concerning the normally-off family, several solutions are proposed. Among these, one of the most promising is the MIS-Gate technology that features a gate recess architecture allowing the semiconductor to physically cut off the 2Deg and drastically decrease gate−source leakage currents. The Vth relaxation characteristic, after voltage stress, has been investigated. It has been shown that the main impact is due to charges close to the gate dielectric/GaN interface, precisely dwelling within the dielectric or the GaN epitaxy. This work provides an analytical model of the Vth evolution of these MIS-GATE (metal insulator semiconductor gate) transistors fabricated on GaN-silicon substrate. This model allows the ex... [more]

Prospect Evaluation of the Cretaceous Yageliemu Clastic Reservoir Based on Geophysical Log Data: A Case Study from the Yakela Gas Condensate Field, Tarim Basin, China
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: Cretaceous reservoir, petrophysical analysis, well logs, Yakela gas condensate field
This paper evaluated the oil and gas potential of the Cretaceous Yageliemu clastic reservoir within the Yakela condensed gas field lying in the Kuqa Depression, Tarim Basin, China. The petrophysical properties of the interest zones in the Kuqa area were characterized using geophysical logs from five wells. The results reveal that the gas-bearing zones are characterized by high resistivity, good permeability (K) and effective porosity (Φeff), low water saturation (Sw), and low shale concentration (Vsh), reflecting clean sand. The shale distribution model showed that these shales have no major influence on porosity and fluid saturation. The average shale volume, average effective porosity, and hydrocarbon saturation indicate that the Cretaceous Yageliemu Formation in the studied area contains prospective reservoir properties. The spatial distribution of petrophysical parameters, reservoir rock typing (RRT), and lithofacies were analyzed using the cross plots of litho saturation (volumetr... [more]

Long-Term Outdoor Testing of Perovskite Mini-Modules: Effects of FACl Additives
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: halide additives, performance degradation, perovskites
The outdoor performance monitoring of perovskite modules over 16 weeks is reported. Two different types of active perovskite layers were studied: one type contained formamidinium chloride (FACl) halide additives and the other contained no additives with the main purpose to investigate performance trends during the outdoor exposure of those type of devices. Long-term side-by-side outdoor testing of devices with and without halide additives was not implemented in the past and merits investigation in order to determine the impact of additives on perovskite performance and stability. Although the two types of modules displayed similar initial outdoor performance characteristics, their outdoor performance evolution differed. Different degradation rates between the modules with and without additives were obtained just after field installation. In particular, the modules with additives exhibited higher performance degradation under open-circuit loading conditions between current-voltage (IV)... [more]

Inventories of Short-Lived Fission Gas Nuclides in Nuclear Reactors
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: burnup, fission gaseous nuclides, inventory, reactor power, source term
Taking inventories in reactor cores is critical for understanding their radioactive source terms and establishing the relationship between the activity concentration in the primary loop and the status of the reactor core’s fuel. However, there is a niche in which a simple but accurate relationship between reactor conditions and nuclide inventories can reliably predict the fission gas nuclide activities of the reactor core in the primary loop. In this study, a simple and efficient model called “Inventories of a Point Reactor for Fission Gas Nuclides” (IPRFGN) was proposed to calculate and interpret such inventories, in which a 10 MW high-temperature gas-cooled experimental reactor (HTR-10) was used as the test case. The present study findings were consistent with those of a general point−depletion burnup code such as the KORIGEN code. Here, the relative error was <1%. Based on the application of the IPRFGN model in HTR-10, the results indicate that the proposed IPRFGN model has provi... [more]

Definition of Regulatory Targets for Electricity Non-Technical Losses: Proposition of an Automatic Model-Selection Technique for Panel Data Regressions
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: automatic model-selection technique, economic regulation, electricity distribution utilities, non-technical losses, panel data regression
Non-technical losses (NTLs) are one of the main problems that electricity distribution utilities face in developing regions such as Latin America, the Caribbean, sub-Saharan Africa, and South Asia. Particularly in Brazil, based on the socioeconomic and market variables concerning all the distribution utilities, the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) has formulated several specifications of econometric models for panel data with random effects, all aimed at determining an index that reflects the difficulty of combating NTLs according to the intrinsic characteristics of each distribution area. Nevertheless, given the exhaustive search for combinations of explanatory variables and the complexity inherent to defining regulatory NTL targets, this process still requires the evaluation of many models through hypothesis and goodness-of-fit tests. In this regard, this article proposes an automatic model-selection technique for panel data regressions to better assist the Agency in establish... [more]

Viable Fully Integrated Energy Community Based on the Holistic LINK Approach
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: business cases, customer acceptance, energy community, LINK holistic architecture, low voltage grid, roadmap, technical solution, use cases, voltage control
The EU policymakers have adopted legislation to support communities taking responsibility for the energy transition. However, their development and integration are still in their early stages: many studies are performed without considering the overlapped social, economic, political, electrical, and information technology tasks simultaneously. This paper is the first to look at energy communities in their entirety, from the roles of the actors to the organisation, regulation, technical solution, and the market, to the use and business cases. The waterfall methodology was used throughout the work. The results show that energy communities can be viable by becoming reliable players so DSOs can better integrate the acquired flexibility and other services into their processes without compromising power supply. Their technical integration requires a coordinated operation and control of the entire power grid, including transmission and distribution, and the end-users, as proposed by the LINK h... [more]

Fault Diagnosis of Nuclear Power Plant Based on Sparrow Search Algorithm Optimized CNN-LSTM Neural Network
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: convolutional neural network, fault diagnosis, long short-term memory, nuclear power plant, sparrow search algorithm
Nuclear power is a type of clean and green energy; however, there is a risk of radioactive material leakage when accidents occur. When radioactive material leaks from nuclear power plants, it has a great impact on the environment and personnel safety. In order to enhance the safety of nuclear power plants and support the operator’s decisions under accidental circumstances, this paper proposes a fault diagnosis method for nuclear power plants based on the sparrow search algorithm (SSA) optimized by the CNN-LSTM network. Firstly, the convolutional neural network (CNN) was used to extract features from the data before they were then combined with the long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network to process time series data and form a CNN-LSTM model. Some of the parameters in the LSTM neural network need to be manually tuned based on experience, and the settings of these parameters have a great impact on the overall model results. Therefore, this paper selected the sparrow search algorithm... [more]

Biomass Combustion Modeling Using OpenFOAM: Development of a Simple Computational Model and Study of the Combustion Performance of Lippia origanoides Bagasse
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Combustion is the most commonly used technology to produce energy from biomass; nevertheless, there are still thermal efficiency problems in current biomass combustion furnaces and a lack of knowledge about the properties of residual biomasses that could be used as fuels. Aiming to contribute to knowledge of the potential of residual biomass for energy generation, this work reports on the implementation of a 2D computational model to study the combustion performance of several solid biomass fuels, and its application in the analysis of Lippia origanoides bagasse combustion. The model uses an Eulerian−Lagrangian approach; in the continuous phase, governing equations are solved, and in the dispersed phase, particles are tracked and the mass, momentum, species and energy transfer between the phases are calculated. The model was validated against experimental data from a combustor fueled by three biomasses: wood pellets, olive stone and almond shell. The results show deviations of less tha... [more]

Reliability Enhancement of Fast Charging Station under Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment Failures and Repairs
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: charging reliability, charging resource availability, DC fast charging, electric vehicles, EV user satisfaction
This work focuses on the enhancement of the charging reliability of both scheduled (SEVs) and opportunistic (UEVs) electric vehicle (EV) users in an EV fast charging station (FCS). The proposed charging coordination strategies allow UEVs to exploit unused charging resources to optimally utilize the limited charging resources of FCS. However, the optimum utilization of limited charging resources of an FCS while assuring a reliable charging process for plugged-in EVs under random failures of electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) is a real challenge for the FCS controller. When the FCS admits UEVs in addition to SEVs, assuring a satisfactory quality of service to both EV user categories is also dispensable. Therefore, we analyze the performance of reservation of off-board mobile chargers (MOBCs) to enhance the charging reliability of EV users while achieving high charging resource utilization. This work proposes resource allocation and charging coordination strategies for an FCS where... [more]

Decarbonizing the Energy System of Non-Interconnected Islands: The Case of Mayotte
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: decarbonization, energy system planning tools, energy transition pathways, Mayotte, non-interconnected islands, RES penetration
Islands face unique challenges on their journey towards achieving carbon neutrality by the mid-century, due to the lack of energy interconnections, limited domestic energy resources, extensive fossil fuel dependence, and high load variance requiring new technologies to balance demand and supply. At the same time, these challenges can be turned into a great opportunity for economic growth and the creation of jobs with non-interconnected islands having the potential to become transition frontrunners by adopting sustainable technologies and implementing innovative solutions. This paper uses an advanced energy−economy system modeling tool (IntE3-ISL) accompanied by plausible decarbonization scenarios to assess the medium- and long-term impacts of energy transition on the energy system, emissions, economy, and society of the island of Mayotte. An Increase in the Energy Efficiency of a New Design of Pumps for Nuclear Power Plants
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: centrifugal pump, Energy Efficiency, energy independence, power consumption, process innovation
The reliability of pumping units at nuclear power plants (NPPs) is critical in terms of their energy efficiency and safety. Remarkably, WWER-1000 reactors at Ukrainian NPPs are equipped with outdated pumping units that have already served their full-service life. This fact leads to an urgent need to develop a new, more efficient pump. In the article, a promising pump, ACNA 600-35, was developed. It was designed to increase the energy efficiency of pumps TX 800/70/8-K-2E, applied at the holding pool and the industrial circuit of the nuclear reactor. Since these pumps should be imported from the monopoly suppliers, this affects both the energy efficiency of pumping equipment and the energy independence of Eastern Europe. The proposed pump ACNA 600-35 is characterized by an increased efficiency of up to 0.12−0.13 compared with the TX 800/70/8-K-2E pump. In general, the life cycle cost of the proposed pump is 15−20% lower than for the analog TX 800/70/8-K-2E. The design of the developed pu... [more]
