Optimization-Based Formulations for Short-Circuit Studies with Inverter-Interfaced Generation in PowerModelsProtection.jl
Arthur K. Barnes, Jose E. Tabarez, Adam Mate, Russell W. Bent
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed energy resources, distribution network, microgrid, Optimization, power system operation, protection, protective relaying
Protecting inverter-interfaced microgrids is challenging as conventional time-overcurrent protection becomes unusable due to the lack of fault current. There is a great need for novel protective relaying methods that enable the application of protection coordination on microgrids, thereby allowing for microgrids with larger areas and numbers of loads while not compromising reliable power delivery. Tools for modeling and analyzing such microgrids under fault conditions are necessary in order to help design such protective relaying and operate microgrids in a configuration that can be protected, though there is currently a lack of tools applicable to inverter-interfaced microgrids. This paper introduces the concept of applying an optimization problem formulation to the topic of inverter-interfaced microgrid fault modeling, and discusses how it can be employed both for simulating short-circuits and as a set of constraints for optimal microgrid operation to ensure protective device coordin... Keywords: electricity, flywheel energy storage systems (FESS), Renewable and Sustainable Energy, spacecraft, transport industry
This review presents a detailed summary of the latest technologies used in flywheel energy storage systems (FESS). This paper covers the types of technologies and systems employed within FESS, the range of materials used in the production of FESS, and the reasons for the use of these materials. Furthermore, this paper provides an overview of the types of uses of FESS, covering vehicles and the transport industry, grid leveling and power storage for domestic and industrial electricity providers, their use in motorsport, and applications for space, satellites, and spacecraft. Different types of machines for flywheel energy storage systems are also discussed. This serves to analyse which implementations reduce the cost of permanent magnet synchronous machines. As well as this, further investigations need to be carried out to determine the ideal temperature range of operation. Induction machines are currently stoutly designed with lower manufacturing cost, making them unsuitable for high-s... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: forecast errors, secondary regulation, spinning and nonspinning reserve, tertiary regulation
The diffusion of nonprogrammable power plants, together with the decommissioning of conventional, rotating generators, is increasing the need for flexible resources to always ensure the safe and secure operation of the European electric-power system. Beyond technological advances, policy aspects also play a fundamental role in the opening of electricity markets to new players; in this regard, System Operations Guideline EU 2017/1485 and Italian Regulatory Authority documents require the Italian transmission-system operator (TSO; Terna) to publish all exploited algorithms and methodologies for the management of market balancing. In this context, the present paper develops and presents a data-driven methodology to estimate secondary and tertiary reserve needs; a numerical real-life case study, focused on the North Italy geographical zone, is presented. Data for 2017, 2018, and 2019 on electricity consumption and production (forecasted and actual) were gathered. Following the European TSO... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: development, Energy, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), PESTLE analysis, trends
Developments, trends, business climate, conditions, factors influencing the efficiency and results of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in the energy sector are explored in this research. PESTLE (political, economic, social, technological, legal, environmental) analysis was performed in order to determine the driving forces of M&As in the energy industry. Considering the motivation and main questions of the study, a sample of global M&A deals that have occurred during the period 1995−2020 has been analyzed. DataStream 5.1 database by Thomson Reuters was employed to identify the sample of global energy companies that took over another company in the period 1995−2020. According to the research, while the role and presence of M&As in the energy industry are increasing, the purpose of the M&A deals has changed remarkably. During 1995−2010, most M&A events were conducted in order to explore synergies and benefit from cost reduction. Since the last decade, firms are pursuing M&As in the search... [more]
Diagnostics of PID Early Stage in PV Systems
Tomáš Finsterle, Ladislava Černá, Pavel Hrzina, David Rokusek, Vítězslav Benda
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: diagnostics of photovoltaic module defects, impedance characteristics, potential-induced degradation
Potential induced degradation (PID) is a serious threat for the photovoltaic (PV) industry. The risk of PID may increase with increasing operating voltage of PV systems. Although PID tests are currently standard tests, the expansion of floating PV power plants and installation in humid climates show that PID-free modules are still sensitive to this type of degradation. Therefore, a method that can detect PID in the initial phase before standard tests reveal it, is necessary to increase the reliability of PV systems and maintain their lifetime. One possible tool for revealing early-stage PID manifestations is impedance spectroscopy and I-V dark curves measurements. Both IS and dark current measurement methods are sensitive to cell shunt resistance (RSH), which is strongly influenced by PID before significant power loss and can act as an early stage PID detection mechanism. The paper describes the differences of the common P-type PV module parameters both during the degradation process a... [more]
The Hydraulically Controlled Oscillating Piston Converter
Rudolf Scheidl
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: digital hydraulics, oscillating mass converter, switched inertance control
One way to realize inertia in energy saving hydraulic switching converters is a mechanical oscillator connected to a piston. Its two basic advantages over the use of fluid in an inductance pipe are higher compactness and a better decoupling of inductance and capacitance; these are opposed by a more complex valve system, which raises costs if electric control is applied. This paper presents and studies an oscillating mass converter with pure hydraulic control. It features a pressure control function and constitutes a step-up converter. A simple model is established to elucidate the basic properties of the function principle under idealized conditions. The complete system with the hydraulic control concept is studied by an elaborate dynamical model. It is shown that the converter is able to operate in the intended way under the conditions of the mathematical model. A potential application for a load sensing type meter out control of a cylinder drive is sketched.
Scheduling Optimization of a Cabinet Refrigerator Incorporating a Phase Change Material to Reduce Its Indirect Environmental Impact

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon emission, carbon intensity, cooling, Optimization, phase change materials (PCMs), thermal energy storage (TES)
Phase Change Materials (PCMs) incorporated in refrigerators can be used to shift their energy consumption from peak periods, when the electric network energy demand is the highest, to off-peak periods. While PCMs can flatten the energy demand curve, they can achieve economic savings if Time-of-Use (TOU) electricity tariffs are applied. However, the hourly carbon emission factor is not commonly linked to the hourly tariff, and the final CO2 emitted due to the operations of the refrigerator would not be fully optimized. In this work, a method based on the Simulated Annealing optimization technique was proposed to identify the optimal working schedule of a cabinet refrigerator incorporating a PCM to reduce its indirect carbon emissions. Data from countries with different representative carbon intensity profiles were used. The normalized standard deviation and normalized range are the best statistical indexes to predict carbon emission reduction in the proposed solution. These parameters p... [more]

Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, diagnostic reasoning, hybrid power system, multivalent logic, technical diagnostics
This article presents the problem of diagnostic examination by the (DIAG) diagnostic system of devices of the House on Water (HoW) hybrid electric power system in the multi-valued (2, 3, and 4) state assessment. Forming the basis for the functioning of the (DIAG) diagnostic system is the measurement knowledge base of the object tested. For this purpose, the issues of building a diagnostic knowledge base for a hybrid power system for HoW are presented. The basis for obtaining diagnostic information for the measurement knowledge base is a functional and diagnostic analysis of the hybrid power system tested. The result of this analysis is a functional and diagnostic model of the research object. At the next stage of the work, on the basis of the model created, the sets of basic elements and the sets of measurement signals were determined together with the reference signals assigned. State classification in the (DIAG) system is based on an analysis of the value of the divergence metrics of... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: ANFO, post-blast fumes, silicon dioxide, velocity of detonation
Non-ideal explosives with differing contents of silicon dioxide (silica or dioxosilane) added in the form of powder and gel were tested. Measurements of structure, crystallinity and morphology were performed by means of infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). IR and XRD analysis revealed a lack of SiO2 influence on the non-ideal explosive structure. SEM analysis indicated that all the surface deformations of ammonium nitrate(V) prill were filled by a thin fuel film layer on which SiO2 was present. The additional calculations of selected theoretical properties of non-ideal compositions were made using ZMWCyw software. Based on this, it was established that the optimum semimetal content was 1.0 wt.%. Blasting tests confirmed that the addition of 1.0 wt.% SiO2 to the Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil (ANFO) resulted in the lowest volume of post-blast fumes. Moreover, it was established that finer SiO2 powder cannot be used as the oxide component... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ANN, ARIMAX (Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average with explanatory variables), Jordan, load forecasting, LV network, PV system, rolling and point forecast
More and more households are using renewable energy sources, and this will continue as the world moves towards a clean energy future and new patterns in demands for electricity. This creates significant novel challenges for Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) such as volatile net demand behavior and predicting Low Voltage (LV) demand. There is a lack of understanding of modern LV networks’ demand and renewable energy sources behavior. This article starts with an investigation into the unique characteristics of householder demand behavior in Jordan, connected to Photovoltaics (PV) systems. Previous studies have focused mostly on forecasting LV level demand without considering renewable energy sources, disaggregation demand and the weather conditions at the LV level. In this study, we provide detailed LV demand analysis and a variety of forecasting methods in terms of a probabilistic, new optimization learning algorithm called the Golden Ratio Optimization Method (GROM) for an Artifici... April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: brushless DC motor, disturbance diagnosis, disturbance mitigation, electronic commutation, EMC, EMI, higher harmonics mitigation
Electrical devices in the consumer markets need to comply with stringent standards for electromagnetic interference (EMI) distortion and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). This paper presents the results of measurements of electromagnetic interference generated by an electrical drive of an electric torque tool with a brushless DC motor. The measurements were made in accordance with the PN-EN 55014-1:2017-06E standard, in the frequency band of 148 kHz−30 MHz. The results confirmed that the tested drive can meet the requirements defined in this document. Another document, the PN-EN IEC 61000-3-2:2019-04E standard, provides limits for the harmonic content in the current drawn by electrical devices from a single-phase AC line. This paper also presents the results of measurements related to this standard. Harmonics, up to and including the 40th one, were determined and compared with the limits given in the standard for class B devices. The measurement results indicate a need to use an act... [more]
A Method to Avoid Underestimated Risks in Seismic SUPSA and MUPSA for Nuclear Power Plants Caused by Partitioning Events
Woo Sik Jung
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: alternating operation system, partitioning events, probabilistic safety assessment (PSA), underestimation of core damage frequency (CDF)
Seismic probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) models for nuclear power plants (NPPs) have many non-rare events whose failure probabilities are proportional to the seismic ground acceleration. It has been widely accepted that minimal cut sets (MCSs) that are calculated from the seismic PSA fault tree should be converted into exact solutions, such as binary decision diagrams (BDDs), and that the accurate seismic core damage frequency (CDF) should be calculated from the exact solutions. If the seismic CDF is calculated directly from seismic MCSs, it is drastically overestimated. Seismic single-unit PSA (SUPSA) models have random failures of alternating operation systems that are combined with seismic failures of components and structures. Similarly, seismic multi-unit PSA (MUPSA) models have failures of NPPs that undergo alternating operations between full power and low power and shutdown (LPSD). Their failures for alternating operations are modeled using fraction or partitioning events i... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air–fuel mixing, atomisation, efficiency, emissions, internal combustion engine, recuperated split cycle engine, thermal propulsion system
In this work air fuel mixing and combustion dynamics in the recuperated split cycle engine (RSCE) are investigated through new theoretical analysis and complementary optical experiments of the flow field. First, a brief introduction to the basic working principles of the RSCE cycle will be presented, followed by recent test bed results relevant to pressure traces and soot emissions. These results prompted fundamental questioning of the air-fuel mixing and combustion dynamics taking place. Hypotheses of the mixing process are then presented, with differences to that of a conventional Diesel engine highlighted. Moreover, the links of the reduced emissions, air transfer processes and enhanced atomisation are explored. Initial experimental results and Schlieren images of the air flow through the poppet valves in a flow rig are reported. The Schlieren images display shockwave and Mach disk phenomena. Demonstrating supersonic air flow in the chamber is consistent with complementary CFD work.... [more]

The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of an Ag/spiro-OMeTAD/CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3)/PCBM/mesoporous TiO2/compact TiO2/FTO planar solar cell with different annealing temperatures of PbI2 and MAPbI3 films was investigated in this study. The morphology control of a MAPbI3 thin film plays key roles in high-efficiency perovskite solar cells. The PbI2 films were prepared by using thermal vacuum evaporation technology, and the MAPbI3 perovskite films were synthesized with two-step synthesis. The X-ray spectra and surface morphologies of the PbI2 and MAPbI3 films were examined at annealing temperatures of 80, 100, 120, and 140 °C for 10 min. The performance of the perovskite planar solar cell at an annealing temperature of 100 °C for 10 min was demonstrated. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) was about 8.66%, the open-circuit voltage (Voc) was 0.965 V, the short-circuit current (Jsc) was 13.6 mA/cm2, and the fill factor (FF) was 0.66 by scanning the density−voltage (J−V) curve.
Classification of Superimposed Partial Discharge Patterns

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: classification, LSTM, neural networks, partial discharge, PD
Phase resolved partial discharge patterns (PRPD) are routinely used to assess the condition of power transformers. In the past, classification systems have been developed in order to automate the fault identification task. Most of those systems work with the assumption that only one source is active. In reality, however, multiple PD sources can be active at the same time. Hence, PRPD patterns can overlap and cannot be separated easily, e.g., by visual inspection. Multiple PD sources in a single PRPD represent a multi-label classification problem. We present a system based on long short-term memory (LSTM) neural networks to resolve this task. The system is generally able to classify multiple overlapping PRPD by while only being trained by single class PD sources. The system achieves a single class accuracy of 99% and a mean multi-label accuracy of 43% for an imbalanced dataset. This method can be used with overlapping PRPD patterns to identify the main PD source and, depending on the da... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: cost of heat, solar collector, solar industrial process heat, thermal desalination, total internal reflection, waveguide concentrator
This paper analyzes a novel, cost-effective planar waveguide solar concentrator design that is inspired by cellular hexagonal structures in nature with the benefits of facile installation and low operation and maintenance cost. A coupled thermal and optical analysis of solar irradiation through an ideal hexagonal waveguide concentrator integrated with a linear receiver is presented, along with a cost analysis methodology, to establish the upper limit of performance. The techno-economic model, coupled with numerical optimization, is used to determine designs that maximized power density and minimized the cost of heat in the temperature range of 100−250 °C, which constitutes more than half of the industrial process heat demand. Depending on the incident solar irradiation and the application temperature, the cost of heat for the optimal design configuration ranged between 0.1−0.27 $/W and 0.075−0.18 $/W for waveguide made of ZK7 glass and polycarbonate, respectively. A techno-economic ana... [more]
Transition Prediction in Incompressible Boundary Layer with Finite-Amplitude Streaks
Juan Ángel Martín, Pedro Paredes
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: boundary layer, boundary region equations, plane-marching PSE
Modulating the boundary layer velocity profile is a very promising strategy for achieving transition delay and reducing the friction of the plate. By perturbing the flow with counter-rotating vortices that undergo transient, non-modal growth, streamwise-aligned streaks are formed inside the boundary layer, which have been proved (theoretical and experimentally) to be very robust flow structures. In this paper, we employ efficient numerical methods to perform a parametric stability investigation of the three-dimensional incompressible flat-plate boundary layer with finite-amplitude streaks. For this purpose, the Boundary Region Equations (BREs) are applied to solve the nonlinear downstream evolution of finite amplitude streaks. Regarding the stability analysis, the linear three-dimensional plane-marching Parabolized Stability Equations (PSEs) concept constitutes the best candidate for this task. Therefore, a thorough parametric study is presented, analyzing the instability characteristi... [more]

Keywords: kesterite photoelectric converters, the heat-conducting high-temperature isolating coverings, thin-film photovoltaic
Photovoltaic systems (PV) based on Cu2ZnSn(S, Se)4 (CZTS) solar cells have demonstrated efficiency and high performance. According to the results of comparative studies, the kesterite structure has proven to be ecologically safe and less expensive than other photovoltaic systems. The goal of the present study was to design a disposable high-temperature transparent electrical insulating coating to cover metal plates for photovoltaic devices based on CZTS. The solution was to replace electrically conductive metallics dispersed in a high-temperature siloxane coating with phonon thermal conductivity ceramic particles. Properties of the obtained coating were investigated using different methods. A mathematical model of thermal processes in the film during heating was also developed. For the control sample and the sample with a heat-conducting filler, a quantitative ratio of thermal conductivity was obtained. The research results confirmed the necessary properties of the coating, including r... [more]
Investigation: Cutting Transport Mechanism in Inclined Well Section under Pulsed Drilling Fluid Action
Xiaohua Zhu, Keyu Shen, Bo Li
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cuttings bed, cuttings transport, inclined well section
Due to gravity, drilling cuttings are easily accumulated in an inclined well section, ultimately forming a cuttings bed, which places the drill pipe under strong friction torque. In severe cases, this can cause dragging, stuck drills, and broken drill tools. Because conventional drilling fluids are difficult to prevent the formation of cuttings in inclined well sections, a method of carrying cuttings with the pulsed drilling fluid to improve wellbore cleanness is proposed. Experiments and numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the effects of cuttings bed transport velocity, cuttings size, cuttings height, drill pipe rotation speed, cuttings bed mass, and roughness height. The optimal pulse parameters are determined per their respective impact on cuttings transport concerning varied periods, amplitudes, and duty cycles of the pulsed drilling fluid. Compared to cuttings transport under the conventional drilling fluid flow rate, the pulsed drilling fluid produces the turbulent... [more]
Experimental and Theoretical Validation of One Diode and Three Parameters−Based PV Models
Rui Castro, Miguel Silva
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: data-driven models, experimental validation, one diode and three parameters model, performance models, PV modules, theoretical validation
The present paper defines and assesses a new simplified method to represent the photovoltaic (PV) modules’ electrical behavior, based on the commonly used one diode and three parameters (1D + 3P) model, addressing two main objectives. The first one is to quantify and assess, at different operating conditions, the PV modules electrical behavior estimations’ accuracy provided by the well-known 1D + 3P, through a comparison based on experimental and theoretical results. The second one concerns the performance assessment of the 1D + 3P model’s suggested approximation, aiming at simplifying the mathematics instead of solving complex iterative equations, which hinges on higher computational time to obtain accurate results. Hence, experimental and theoretical data were considered, aiming at performing a thorough comparison with more than 17,000 PV modules being assessed, which was achieved by using both the California Energy Commission (CEC) database and PVsyst software. The findings show tha... [more]

Keywords: cam groove profile, cavitation, reciprocating piston pump distributing flow, rotating-sleeve distributing flow system, structurally improved
Reciprocating piston pumps are widely used in various fields, such as automobiles, ships, aviation, and engineering machinery. Conventional reciprocating piston pump distributing flow (RPPDF) systems have the disadvantages of a loose structure and low volumetric efficiency, as well as affected positively by the operating frequency. In this paper, a novel rotating-sleeve distributing flow (RSDF) system is presented for bridging these drawbacks, as well as structurally improved to overcome the inoperable and challenging problems in oil intake and discharge found in the experiment. Moreover, the Singhal cavitation model specifically for the RSDF system and four-cam groove profiles (CGPs) is established. To find the most suitable CGP to reduce the RSDF’s cavitation, the cavitation of the RSDF system was investigated, combining with simulations by taking into account the gap among the rotating sleeve, the pump chamber, and experiments on four presented CGPs. Five major operations for the conversion of lignocellulosic biomasses into bioethanol are pre-treatment, detoxification, hydrolysis, fermentation, and distillation. The fermentation process is a significant biological step to transform lignocellulose into biofuel. The interactions of biochemical networks and their uncertainty and nonlinearity that occur during fermentation processes are major problems for experts developing accurate bioprocess models. In this study, mechanical processing and pre-treatment on the palm trunk were done before fermentation. Analysis was performed on the fresh palm sap and the fermented sap to determine the composition. The analysis for total sugar content was done using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and the percentage of alcohols by volume was determined using gas chromatography (GC). A model was also developed for the fermentation process based on the Adaptive-Network-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) combined with particle swarm optimization... [more]
Thermodynamic and Kinetic Considerations Regarding the Prospects for a Dual-Purpose Hydrogen Extraction and Separation Membrane
Karl Sohlberg
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: heterogeneous catalyst, hydrogen extraction, hydrogen separation, interface, membrane, rate equations
Extraction of hydrogen from hydrocarbons is a logical intermediate-term solution for the escalating worldwide demand for hydrogen. This work explores the possibility of using a single membrane to accomplish both the catalytic dehydrogenation and physical separation of hydrogen gas as a possible way to improve the efficiency of hydrogen production from hydrocarbon sources. The present analysis shows that regions of pressure/temperature space exist for which the overall process is thermodynamically spontaneous (ΔG < 0). Each step in the process is based on known physics. The rate of hydrogen production is likely to be controlled by the barrier to hydrogen abstraction, with the density of H-binding sites also playing a role. A critical materials issue will be the strength of the oxide/metal interface.
Remaining Useful Life Prediction of MOSFETs via the Takagi−Sugeno Framework

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: degradation modeling, prediction, remaining useful life, soft computing, Takagi–Sugeno
The paper presents a new method of predicting the remaining useful life of technical devices. The proposed soft computing approach bridges the gap between analytical and data-driven health prognostic approaches. Whilst the former ones are based on the classical exponential shape of degradation, the latter ones learn the degradation behavior from the observed historical data. As a result of the proposed fusion, a practical method for calculating components’ remaining useful life is proposed. Contrarily to the approaches presented in the literature, the proposed ensemble of analytical and data-driven approaches forms the uncertainty interval containing an expected remaining useful life. In particular, a Takagi−Sugeno multiple models-based framework is used as a data-driven approach while an exponential curve fitting on-line approach serves as an analytical one. Unlike conventional data-driven methods, the proposed approach is designed on the basis of the historical data that apart from l... [more]
