Simple and Robust MPPT Current Control of a Wound Rotor Synchronous Wind Generator
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: current control, maximum power point tracking (MPPT), synchronous wind generator, wound rotor
In the search for efficient non-permanent magnet variable-speed wind generator solutions, this paper proposes a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) current-control method for a wound rotor synchronous wind generator. The focus is on direct-drive, medium-speed wind generators. In the proposed method, the currents of the wound rotor synchronous generator (WRSG) are optimally adjusted according to the generator speed to ensure maximum power generation from the wind turbine without needing information on wind speed. The design, modeling, and simulation of the MPPT current controllers are done in Matlab/Simulink with the WRSG in the synchronous reference frame. The controller is put to the test using different wind speed profiles between cut-in and rated speeds. The simulation results indicate that the proposed current control method is simple, effective, and robust, suggesting its practical implementation. To validate the simulation results, experimental work on a 4.2 kW WRSG prototype sys... [more]

Fast Well Control Optimization with Two-Stage Proxy Modeling
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: derivative-free optimization, global and local proxy modeling, Machine Learning, reservoir simulation
Waterflooding is one of the methods used for increased hydrocarbon production. Waterflooding optimization can be computationally prohibitive if the reservoir model or the optimization problem is complex. Hence, proxy modeling can yield a faster solution than numerical reservoir simulation. This fast solution provides insights to better formulate field development plans. Due to technological advancements, machine learning increasingly contributes to the designing and building of proxy models. Thus, in this work, we have proposed the application of the two-stage proxy modeling, namely global and local components, to generate useful insights. We have established global proxy models and coupled them with optimization algorithms to produce a new database. In this paper, the machine learning technique used is a multilayer perceptron. The optimization algorithms comprise the Genetic Algorithm and the Particle Swarm Optimization. We then implemented the newly generated database to build local... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bioenergy, carbon content, hydrogen content, nitrogen content, stand density management, ultimate analyses, volatile carbon, white spruce, wood biomass, wood drying methodologies
The relative proportions of different chemical components in wood tissues is one of the underlying factors that control wood properties. These proportions vary within and between woody tissues, and an accurate description of these variations is critical for parameterizing forest biogeochemical budgets and models. White spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) spacing intensities trials in the Petawawa Research Forest, Ontario, Canada, were sampled to evaluate variations in carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and hydrogen (H) concentrations between different tissue types, i.e., bark, cambium, knots, earlywood, latewood, and wood. Samples were freeze-dried and oven-dried to test the impact of the drying methods on these chemical elements. Freeze-dried C (51.14) and H (6.18) concentrations were significantly higher than those of oven-dried C (50.55) and H (6.06). Freeze-dried N (0.18) did not differ from oven-dried N (0.17). The spacing intensities impacted C, H, and N, with C content being higher in wi... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electric vehicle, performance, PI control, robustness, sliding mode control, super-twisting sliding mode control, switched reluctance machine
In electric vehicles, performances of electric vehicle drivetrains depend on the electric machine and the control. Switched Reluctance Machines (SRMs) are today an alternative to rare earth magnets machines such as Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM), which is used in the vehicle drivetrain. Because of its high nonlinear behavior, the classical control designed for SRMs is not sufficient to obtain good performances. The objective of this paper is to make performance and robustness comparisons of the designed robust controllers considering the high nonlinear behavior of SRMs. Sliding Mode Control (SMC) and Super-Twisting Sliding Mode Control (STSMC) are developed and validated by simulation for the velocity control loop and the current control loops of the control strategy. However, an evaluation of their performances compared to classical control based on PI controllers is carried out. For a robustness comparison, a variation of SRM parameters is carried out by simulation using... [more]

Grid Interconnection Modeling of Inverter Based Resources (IBR) Plant for Transient Analysis
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: aggregated plant model, electromagnetic transient simulation, grid-connected filters, inverter-based resources plant, vector control
The increase in penetration levels of inverter-based resources (IBRs) is changing the dynamic performance of power grids of different parts of the world. IBRs are now being more and more integrated into the grid at a single connection point as an IBR plant. Due to the complex nature and dynamicity of each inverter model, it is not realistic to build and analyze full complex models of each inverter in the IBR plant. Moreover, simulating a large plant including detailed models of all the IBRs would require high computing resources as well as a long simulation time. This has been the main issue addressed in the new IEEE Std 2800-2022. This paper proposes a novel approach to model an IBR plant, which can capture the transient nature at the plant level, detailed IBR control at the inverter level, interactions of multiple IBR groups in a plant structure, and a collector system connecting the IBRs to the grid. The IBRs in the plant use a voltage source inverter topology combined with a grid-c... [more]

Failure Detection Techniques on the Demand Side of Smart and Sustainable Compressed Air Systems: A Systematic Review
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: compressed air, Energy Efficiency, Fault Detection, smart and sustainable systems
The industrial sector is a crucial economic pillar, seeing annual increases in the production output. In the last few years, a greater emphasis has been placed on the efficient and sustainable use of resources within industry. The use of compressed air in this field is hence gaining interest. These systems have numerous benefits, such as relative low investment costs and reliability; however, they suffer from low-energy efficiency and are highly susceptible to faults. Conventional detection systems, such as ultrasonic leak detection, can be used to identify faults. However, these methods are time consuming, meaning that leakages are often left unattended, contributing to additional energy wastage. Studies published in this area often focus on the supply side rather than the demand side of pneumatic systems. This paper offers a novel review based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology of fault detection methods on the demand side o... [more]

A Hybrid Approach of the Deep Learning Method and Rule-Based Method for Fault Diagnosis of Sucker Rod Pumping Wells
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: convolutional neural network, expert rules, fault diagnosis, sucker rod pumping well, surface dynamometer card
Accurately obtaining the working status of the sucker rod pumping wells is a challenging problem for oil production. Sensors at the polished rod collect working data to form surface dynamometer cards for fault diagnosis. A prevalent method for recognizing these cards is the convolutional neural network (CNN). However, this approach has two problems: an unbalanced dataset due to varying fault frequencies and similar dynamometer card shapes that complicate recognition. This leads to a low accuracy of fault diagnosis in practice, which is unsatisfactory. Therefore, this paper proposes a hybrid approach of the deep learning method and rule-based method for fault diagnosis of sucker rod pumping wells. Specifically, when the CNN model alone fails to achieve satisfactory accuracy in the working status, historical monitoring data of the relevant wells can be collected, and expert rules can assist CNN to improve diagnostic accuracy. By analyzing time series data of factors such as the maximum a... [more]

Model-Free Predictive Current Control of a 3-φ Grid-Connected Neutral-Point-Clamped Transformerless Inverter
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: model-free predictive control, MPPT, NPC, PV, transformerless inverter
Utility grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) installations are becoming a typical component of the current electrical energy grid. The adoption of transformerless inverters has recently changed the topology of these systems. Despite being small, inexpensive, and effective, transformerless inverters have a recurring leakage current issue. Numerous studies are being conducted to improve its performance and bring the leakage current down to acceptable levels. The studies propose three tracks for addressing the leakage current problem of transformerless PV systems: the control technique, the inverter modulation, and the inverter topology. This study applies the model-free predictive control (MFPC) technique to a grid-connected NPC 3-φ transformerless converter powered by a PV panel. An LCL filter connects the transformerless inverter to the grid. The system model considers the grid filter components and the internal impedance of the utility grid. Dual-Extended State Observer-Based Feedback Linearizing Control for a Nonlinear System with Mismatched Disturbances and Uncertainties
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: extended state observer, feedback linearizing control, lumped disturbances, mismatched disturbance, nonlinear system, stability analysis
This research article presents the nonlinear control framework to estimate and reject the mismatched lumped disturbances acting on the nonlinear uncertain system. It is an unfortunate fact that the conventional extended state observer (ESO) is not capable of simultaneously estimating the mismatched lumped disturbance and its derivative for the systems. Moreover, the basic ESO is only suitable for systems with integral chain form (ICF) structures. Similarly, the conventional feedback linearizing control (FLC) approach is not robust enough to stabilize systems in the presence of disturbances and uncertainties. Hence, the nonlinear control framework is proposed to overcome the above issues, which are composed of (a) a dual-extended state observer (DESO), and (b) a DESO-based FLC. The DESO provides information on the unmeasured state, mismatched disturbance, and its derivatives. The DESO-FLC utilizes the information from the DESO to counter the effects of such disturbances and to stabilize... [more]

Application of Active Disturbance Rejection in a Bearingless Machine with Split-Winding
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: ADRC control, induction machine, radial position control
In this paper it is proposed the displacement control of a bearingless induction machine (BIM) with split winding and optimized drive structure using Active Disturbance Rejection Control (ADRC). Considering that the BIM is a multivariable, nonlinear, and time-varying system with coupled variables, advanced control techniques can be useful in order to make the system operate efficiently and with good dynamic performance. The ADRC considers the total disturbance, composed of unmodeled dynamics, nonlinearities, uncertainties, and load variations, as an extended state and estimates it in real-time through a state observer. This increases the overall robustness of the control system to disturbances of different natures. The application of the ADRC technique on the radial position control of the BIM used in this work showed that a Linear version of ADRC is not able to compensate for radial load disturbances but this drawback can be solved by the use of a nonlinear observer in the ADRC struct... Analysis of DFIG Interval Oscillation Based on Second-Order Sliding Film Damping Control
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: doubly fed induction generator, reactive power damping controller, sliding-mode technology
This paper takes advantage of the high control flexibility and fast response time of the interfacing power electronic converter for doubly fed wind turbine grid-connected systems to address inter-area oscillations caused by inadequate system damping in power systems. A reactive-power-coordinated damping controller for a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) is proposed, and it makes use of second-order sliding-mode technology. The suggested controller improves damping performance by controlling the reactive power. It provides benefits such as a quicker damping rate and resilience to modeling errors and parameter changes. The simulation results indicate the system’s improved performance in inter-area oscillation damping and the robustness of the suggested control technique over a broad range of functional areas.

Optimisation of a Gas-Lifted System with Nonlinear Model Predictive Control
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: casing-heading instability, extended Kalman filter, gas lift, Model Predictive Control, optimisation
A gas-lifted system in a mature oil well can experience casing-heading instability, which reduces the mean oil production and it is not healthy for the downstream equipment. This instability was removed by implementing a terminal equality-constrained nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) having input targets with control zones in the system. The input-dependent stability behaviour of the gas-lifted system was visualised through the bifurcation diagram and the step responses of the linearised model at various operating points. The controller was then presented. Then, the close-loop feasibility, as well as the convergence, were discussed. The controller stabilised the undisturbed gas-lifted system, improving production by 5.63% compared to the open-loop operation when the system was in casing-heading instability. For the two input case, the steady-state production, aided by the high-input target, reached 12.25 kg/s, which was far more than 9.57 kg/s for the one input case. This contr... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control, disturbance, flying platform, on-board grid, power bus, pv system
The article presents an on-board power system designed for ships, aviation, and space vehicles using energy from photovoltaic panels. The power structure includes both DC and high-frequency AC power buses. As a result of pulse loads, this system is exposed to disturbances that cause electronic systems to reboot. To reduce the effect of the appearance of secondary disturbances in the AC bus to which the photovoltaic converter is connected, a new control strategy has been proposed. This strategy improves the operation of the proportional resonant regulator that controls the AC bus current by making the reference values linearly dependent on the DC bus voltage. A prototype of such a system was designed in the laboratory. The FPGA control board was pulse-disturbed, leading to start the auto-power procedure, and additional disturbances were observed in the AC bus for the standard system. Reduction in the impact of these disturbances was achieved using the proposed control method by reaching... [more]

Direct power control (DPC) has gained increasing attention in recent years as a simple and efficient control strategy for pulse width modulation (PWM) rectifiers. In this paper, the idea of DPC is introduced into the three-phase coupled inductor-based bipolar-output active rectifier (TCIBAR) for the first time, and a virtual vector-based direct power control (VVB-DPC) strategy is proposed for TCIBAR to realize the bipolar DC power supply for more electric aircraft (MEA). Subject: Process Control
Keywords: clustering, HVAC system, offline optimization, rule-based control, scenario reduction
Learning an optimal control strategy from the optimized operating dataset is a feasible way to improve the operational efficiency of HVAC systems. The operation dataset is the key to ensuring the global optimality and universality of the operation strategy. Currently, the model-based method is commonly used to generate datasets that cover all operating scenarios throughout the cooling season. Universal Virtual Synchronous Generator Based on Extended Virtual Inertia to Enhance Power and Frequency Response
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: power control, power oscillation, virtual inertia, virtual synchronous generator
Virtual synchronous generators (VSG) are considered a new generation of grid-friendly inverters with the same inertial support characteristics as synchronous generators (SG). However, the inertia support comes with the side effects of power and frequency response deterioration. The existing VSG power oscillation suppression methods have limitations such as complex controller parameter tuning, altering the frequency support characteristics, and power quality degradation. To address these issues, this paper proposes a universal VSG control strategy based on extended virtual inertia (VSG-EVI). Herein, the virtual inertia is no longer a constant or varying number; it is endowed with frequency domain characteristics to improve the VSG transient responses. Moreover, a detailed parameter design process is given in detail. Compared with the conventional VSG (CVSG), VSG-EVI significantly suppress the power and frequency oscillations.
