Analysis of Financial Problems of Wind Farms in Poland
Joanna Wyrobek, Łukasz Popławski, Maria Dzikuć
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Poland, wind energy, wind farm performance
Wind energy has been operating in Poland for over 20 years, but many opinions on its profitability are based on publications from other countries and simulations prepared by manufacturers. However, the truth is that the climatic specificity of various countries and price relationships, especially energy prices and subsidies, significantly differentiate this profitability depending on the country. The publication aimed to look at the profitability of wind farms in Poland from three perspectives: financial analysis, NPV (Net Present Value) calculation for older wind farms (2006−2014), and break-even price of energy for these farms (for a non-negative NPV). The research hypothesis set out in the publication stated that wind farms from this period require higher energy prices than current market prices in Poland to achieve a return on invested capital. An element of novelty was calculating the energy price range that would provide an opportunity for at least some of the older farms operati... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: constant resistant and large deformation anchor cable, gob-side entry retaining by roof cutting, roadside support, stress transfer
Pressure relief for roadways retained by roof cutting is essentially caused by stress transfer. In this paper, the stress transfer mechanism of 16011 tail entry with roof cutting in Zhaogu No.1 coal mine is studied from the following two aspects: the change of the tail entry surrounding the rock structure and the interaction between the roadway surrounding rock and supporting structures. It is found by numerical simulation that roof cutting can significantly reduce the magnitude of roadway roof stress, transferring the concentrated stress induced by excavation and mining away from the roadway, and forming an obvious triangle pressure relief area in front of the working face. In the early stage after mining, most of the overburden load is transferred downward through the immediate roof of the roadway. With the movement of overlying strata, the stress, initially transferred to the immediate roof strata, is gradually transferred to the gob, and the calculation formula and influence factor... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coal mining, drum rotational speed, energy consumption, optimal control, shearer, traction speed
As one of the major pieces of equipment in fully mechanized coal mining, the drum shearer plays a critical role in improving the efficiency and energy utilization in the coal mining production process. In this paper, an energy consumption model of a shearer, derived from the analysis of the cutting and traction resistances on the shearer during different processes within a working cycle, is established. Based on the derived model, control and coordination strategies between the two speeds are proposed to minimize the shearer’s energy consumption in unidirectional mining. The case study of a real coal mine shows that the proposed models are valid, and the optimal control of shearer speeds can effectively reduce the energy consumption by 5.16% in a working cycle. To gain further insights into the impact of traction speed and drum rotational speed on the shearer’s energy consumption, several speed coordination cases are employed to further compare with the optimized one. Our study results... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dimensionless indicator, fault diagnosis, lithium-ion battery, unsupervised learning, variational mode decomposition
To enhance the operational reliability and safety of electric vehicles (EVs), big data platforms for EV supervision are rapidly developing, which makes a large quantity of battery data available for fault diagnosis. Since fault types related to lithium-ion batteries play a dominant role, a comprehensive fault diagnosis method is proposed in this paper, in pursuit of an accurate early fault diagnosis method based on voltage signals from battery cells. The proposed method for battery fault diagnosis mainly includes three parts: variational mode decomposition in the signal analysis part to separate the inconsistency of cell states, critical representative signal feature extraction by using a generalized dimensionless indicator construction formula and effective anomaly detection by sparsity-based clustering. The signal features of the majority of signal-based battery fault detection studies are found to be particular cases with a specific set of parameter values of the proposed indicator... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: control, electric vehicle, heat pump, multi-objective optimisation, optimal allocation, thermal comfort
Modern electric vehicle heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems operate in more efficient heat pump mode, thus, improving the driving range under cold ambient conditions. Coupling those HVAC systems with novel heating technologies such as infrared heating panels (IRP) results in a complex system with multiple actuators, which needs to be optimally coordinated to maximise the efficiency and comfort. The paper presents a multi-objective genetic algorithm-based control input allocation method, which relies on a multi-physical HVAC model and a CFD-evaluated cabin airflow distribution model implemented in Dymola. The considered control inputs include the cabin inlet air temperature, blower and radiator fan air mass flows, secondary coolant loop pump speeds, and IRP control settings. The optimisation objective is to minimise total electric power consumption and thermal comfort described by predictive mean vote (PMV) index. Optimisation results indicate that HVAC and IRP con... April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC voltage balancing, five-phase induction motor, multilevel inverter, NPC inverter, SPWM
This article presents a modified sinusoidal pulse-width modulation (SPWM) scheme for a five-phase, three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter. The modulation scheme deploys a modified min−max function to inject the zero-sequence components into the reference modulating signals; hence enabling the effective utilization of the DC-link voltage. Balanced split-input DC-link voltages were achieved through further incorporation of adjustable voltage-dependent variables into the reference signals. The dynamic performance of the control approach is demonstrated through simulations and experiments on a laboratory inverter prototype; the results are well presented.

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy flexibility, low order model, radiant floor heating
This paper presents control strategies to activate energy flexibility for zones with radiant heating systems in response to changes in electricity prices. The focus is on zones with radiant floor heating systems for which the hydronic pipes are located deep in the concrete and, therefore, there is a significant thermal lag. A perimeter zone test-room equipped with a hydronic radiant floor system in an environmental chamber is used as a case study. A low order thermal network model for the perimeter zone, validated with experimental measurements, is utilized to study various control strategies in response to changes in the electrical grid price signal, including short term (nearly reactive) changes of the order of 10−15 min notice. An index is utilized to quantify the building energy flexibility with the focus on peak demand reduction for specific periods of time when the electricity prices are higher than usual. It is shown that the developed control strategies can aid greatly in enhan... [more]

Keywords: distributed generation, electric vehicles, microgrid, power factor
The usage of electric vehicles (EV) have been spreading worldwide, not only as an alternative to achieve a low-carbon future but also to provide ancillary services to improve the power system reliability. A common problem encountered in the existing alternating current (AC) grids is low power factor, which cause several power quality problems and has worsened with the growing application of distributed generation (DG). Therefore, considering the spread of EVs usage for ancillary services and the low power factor issue in current electrical grids, this paper proposes an improved control strategy for power factor correction of a three-phase microgrid management composed of a photovoltaic (PV) array, dynamic loads, and an EV parking lot. This control strategy aims to support power factor issues using the EV charging stations, allowing the full PV generation. Different operation modes are proposed to fulfill the microgrid and the EV users’ requirements, characterizing a Multi Objective Opt... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive fuzzy PID (AFPID), granular function fuzzy PID (GFPID), oxygen excess ratio, oxygen starvation, proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC)
An effective oxygen excess ratio control strategy for a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) can avoid oxygen starvation and optimize system performance. In this paper, a fuzzy PID control strategy based on granular function (GFPID) was proposed. Meanwhile, a proton exchange membrane fuel cell dynamic model was established on the MATLAB/Simulink platform, including the stack model system and the auxiliary system. In order to avoid oxygen starvation due to the transient variation of load current and optimize the parasitic power of the auxiliary system and the stack voltage, the purpose of optimizing the overall operating condition of the system was finally achieved. Adaptive fuzzy PID (AFPID) control has the technical bottleneck limitation of fuzzy rules explosion. GFPID eliminates fuzzification and defuzzification to solve this phenomenon. The number of fuzzy rules does not affect the precision of GFPID control, which is only related to the fuzzy granular points in the fitted gra... [more]

Keywords: AC machines, magnetic field, non-invasive fault diagnosis, spectral analysis
This paper presents a non-invasive procedure to detect inter-turn short circuit faults in the stator windings of AC electrical machines. It proposes the use of the stray external magnetic field measured in the vicinity of the machine to determine stator faults. The originality introduced by this procedure is the analysis method presented in the paper, which when compared to usual diagnosis methods, does not require any data on the healthy state of the machine. The procedure uses the magnetic unbalance created by the rotor poles and the load variation in faulty cases. The presented method can be applied to induction and synchronous machines used as a motor or generator. It is based on the variation of sensitive spectral lines obtained from the external magnetic field when the load changes. Analytical relationships are developed in the paper to justify the proposed method and to explain the physical phenomenon. To illustrate these theoretical considerations, practical experiments are als... [more]

Keywords: microalgae, On/Off control, photobioreactor, PI control, raceway, thin-layer
One of the most critical variables in microalgae-related processes is the pH; it directly determines the overall performance of the production system especially when coupling with wastewater treatment. In microalgae-related wastewater treatment processes, the adequacy of pH has a large impact on the microalgae/bacteria consortium already developing on these systems. For cost-saving reasons, the pH is usually controlled by classical On/Off control algorithms during the daytime period, typically with the dynamics of the system and disturbances not being considered in the design of the control system. This paper presents the modelling and pH control in open photobioreactors, both raceway and thin-layer, using advanced controllers. In both types of photobioreactors, a classic control was implemented and compared with a Proportional−Integral (PI) control, also the operation during only the daylight period and complete daily time was evaluated. Thus, three major variables already studied inc... [more]

The communication infrastructure of the modern Supervisory, Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system continues to enlarge, as hybrid High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC)/Alternating Current (AC) networks emerge. A centralized SCADA faces challenges to meet the time requirements of the two different power networks topologies, such as employing the SCADA toolboxes for both grids. This paper presents the modern communication infrastructure and the time requirements of a centralized SCADA for hybrid HVDC/AC network. In addition, a case study of a complete cycle for a unified Weighted Least Squares (WLS) state estimation is tested on a hybrid HVDC/AC transmission network, based on Voltage Source Converter (VSC). The cycle estimates the elapsed times from the sensors up to the SCADA side, including the data acquisition and the WLS processing times. Keywords: Energy Storage, Model Predictive Control, multi-node microgrid, renewable energy sources, virtual central storage
The integration of a variety of heterogeneous energy sources and different energy storage systems has led to complex infrastructures and made apparent the urgent need for efficient energy control and management. This work presents a non-linear model predictive controller (NMPC) that aims to coordinate the operation of interconnected multi-node microgrids with energy storage capabilities. This control strategy creates a superstructure of a smart-grid consisting of distributed interconnected microgrids, and has the ability to distribute energy among a pool of energy storage means in an optimal way, formulating a virtual central energy storage platform. The goal of this work is the optimal exploitation of energy produced and stored in multi-node microgrids, and the reduction of auxiliary energy sources. A small-scale multi-node microgrid was used as a basis for the mathematical modelling and real data were used for the model validation. A number of operation scenarios under different weat... [more]

Keywords: efficiency coefficient method, envelope entropy, feature extraction, rolling element bearings, shuffled frog leaping algorithm, variational mode decomposition
The fault diagnosis of rolling element bearing is of great significance to avoid serious accidents and huge economic losses. However, the characteristics of the nonlinear, non-stationary vibration signals make the fault feature extraction of signal become a challenging work. This paper proposes an improved variational mode decomposition (IVMD) algorithm for the fault feature extraction of rolling bearing, which has the advantages of extracting the optimal fault feature from the decomposed mode and overcoming the noise interference. The Shuffled Frog Leap Algorithm (SFLA) is employed in the optimal adaptive selection of mode number K and bandwidth control parameter α. A multi-objective evaluation function, which is based on the envelope entropy, kurtosis and correlation coefficients, is constructed to select the optimal mode component. The efficiency coefficient method (ECM) is utilized to transform the multi-objective optimization problem into a single-objective optimization problem. T... [more]

Keywords: controlled salinity waterflooding, controlled salinity-biosurfactant EOR, EOR, reservoir conditions
In this paper, a thorough experimental investigation of enhanced oil recovery via controlled salinity-biosurfactant injection under typical reservoir temperature conditions is reported for the first time. Sixteen core flooding experiments were carried out with four displacing fluids in carbonate rock samples and the improved oil recovery was investigated in secondary, tertiary and quaternary injection modes. The temperature effect on oil recovery during floodings was compared at two temperatures (23 °C and 70 °C) on similar rock samples and fluids using two types of biosurfactants: GreenZyme® and rhamnolipids. The results of this study show that injection of controlled salinity brine (CSB) and controlled salinity biosurfactant brine (CSBSB) improve oil recovery relative to injection of high salinity formation brine (FMB) at both high and low temperatures. At 23 °C, CSBSB improved oil recovery by 15−17% OIIP compared with conventional FMB injection, and by 4−8% OIIP compared with CSB in... [more]

Keywords: cube root, floating point, Householder, inverse cube root, Newton–Raphson
We develop a bit manipulation technique for single precision floating point numbers which leads to new algorithms for fast computation of the cube root and inverse cube root. It uses the modified iterative Newton−Raphson method (the first order of convergence) and Householder method (the second order of convergence) to increase the accuracy of the results. The proposed algorithms demonstrate high efficiency and reduce error several times in the first iteration in comparison with known algorithms. After two iterations 22.84 correct bits were obtained for single precision. Experimental tests showed that our novel algorithm is faster and more accurate than library functions for microcontrollers.

Tomasz Drabek, Paweł Dybowski
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: control system for grids, power inverter control, smart grids, transformer power control
Power flow in three-phase distribution grids containing single-phase prosumer voltage sources strongly depends on the RMS value of the voltage of these sources and their phase shifts in relation to the grid voltage. The ideal way to control single-phase prosumer sources should guarantee no return active power to the MV grid through a distribution transformer and no additional reactive power flows in the LV grid. This means that the active power of the one-phase voltage source is consumed by other single-phase customers (in the same phase or in other phases) and the reactive power of this source is equal to zero. The paper presents the results of the investigations of the dynamic control system of a single-phase voltage source that allows meeting these conditions. On the basis of steady-state calculations, the static characteristics of the above-mentioned control, needed to determine of the proper working point of a prosumer source were also obtained. The control process involves the co... [more]

Keywords: controllable dual-bridge fault current limiter (CDBFCL), controllable voltage source, micro-grid (MG)
Different types of fault current limiters (FCLs) have been developed and designed based on non-superconducting DC reactors (NSDRs). This paper proposes a controllable dual-bridge FCL (CDBFCL) based on the NSDR for use in an AC-type micro-grid. It includes a NSDR and two series and shunt bridge circuits. The series bridge is based on diode semiconductor switches and is coupled in series with the line via a transformer. The shunt bridge is based on thyristor semiconductor switches and is coupled in parallel with the line. The shunt bridge provides a variable voltage source. It compensates for the DC side voltage drop due to NSDR resistance and semiconductor switches during normal operating condition. In addition, by controlling the shunt bridge firing angle, it produces a controllable DC voltage, which can control the fault current amplitude during a fault. The structure, principle operating work, and control system of the proposed CDBFCL are presented. The CDBFCL performance is studied... [more]

Keywords: cascaded H-Bridge (CHB) converter, feedforward calculation, grid imbalance, leg energy balancing, load imbalance, static synchronous compensator (STATCOM), zero-sequence voltage injection
Leg capacitor energy balancing control is one of the crucial issues for stable operation of a cascaded H-bridge (CHB) converter. Because this topology inherently consists of numerous submodule cells with DC capacitors, the cell voltages and leg capacitor energy instantaneously fluctuate depending on operation sequence of the CHB converter. In general, a wye-connected CHB-converter-based static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) utilizes a zero-sequence voltage component for leg capacitor energy balancing. In this paper, to improve the dynamics of leg energy balancing control, a feedforward calculation method of the zero-sequence voltage injection is proposed. The feedforward term can be instantaneously calculated by using the information from the measured leg voltages and leg currents, and the method ensures successful regulation of the leg energy balance even under unbalanced grid and load conditions. Moreover, the verification of the proposed method is supported by the mathematical ve... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: BLACM, position control, rail traction system
This paper presents the design and position control scheme of an overhang-type rail mover system driven by a dual Brushless AC (BLAC) motor with a simple Hall position sensor inside each motor. The overhang-type roller is chosen to reduce the slip between the roller and rail surface due to gravity. The BLAC motors are used to provide smooth translation along the rail and effective turning. Imbalances on any part of the motor and the simplicity of the Hall position sensor can create additional disturbance load, unsteady movement, and position errors. To reduce the sudden moving position error between the two motors, a balancing compensator with a Proportional-Differential (PD) position controller, which is based on the instantaneous speed and position trajectories, is presented. Furthermore, speed and position reference models are designed to compensate for the low Hall sensor resolution in the low-speed range. Therefore, steady-state position errors can then be regulated simply by usin... [more]

Keywords: ambient intelligence, Artificial Intelligence, Energy Efficiency, fuzzy inference system, heating controller, smart building
Most already advanced developed heating control systems remain either in a prototype state (because of their relatively complex implementation requirements) or require very specific technologies not implementable in most existing buildings. On the other hand, the above-mentioned analysis has also pointed out that most smart building energy management systems deploy quite very basic heating control strategies limited to quite simplistic predesigned use-case scenarios. In the present paper, we propose a heating control strategy taking advantage of the overall identification of the living space by taking advantage of the consideration of the living space users’ presence as additional thermal sources. To handle this, an adaptive controller for the operation of heating transmitters on the basis of soft computing techniques by taking into account the diverse range of occupants in the heating chain is introduced. The strategy of the controller is constructed on a basis of the modeling heating... [more]
