5G-Enabled UAVs with Command and Control Software Component at the Edge for Supporting Energy Efficient Opportunistic Networks
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: 5G, drones, edge, efficiency, Energy, UAV
Recently Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have evolved considerably towards real world applications, going beyond entertaining activities and use. With the advent of Fifth Generation (5G) cellular networks and the number of UAVs to be increased significantly, it is created the opportunity for UAVs to participate in the realisation of 5G opportunistic networks by carrying 5G Base-Stations to under-served areas, allowing the provision of bandwidth demanding services, such as Ultra High Definition (UHD) video streaming, as well as other multimedia services. Among the various improvements that will drive this evolution of UAVs, energy efficiency is considered of primary importance since will prolong the flight time and will extend the mission territory. Although this problem has been studied in the literature as an offline resource optimisation problem, the diverse conditions of a real UAV flight does not allow any of the existing offline optimisation models to be applied in real flight con... April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: buck, dynamic, multiload, PWMSMC, wireless power supply technology
At present, wireless power supply technology has gradually attracted people’s attention due to its safety, convenience, and portability. It has become one of the development trends of power supply for future technologies such as electric vehicles. In many engineering applications, inductive wireless power supply systems need to supply power to multiple loads at the same time. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the dynamic process of the multiload system. This paper first selects the optimal compensation network according to the stable operating conditions of the multiload system. Secondly, in order to classify and describe the movement state of the load in the dynamic process, the simulation model is established on the MATLAB/SIMULINK platform to analyze the influence of the mutual inductance or resistance of any load on the output characteristics of the primary system and other loads. Then, in order to solve the problem of unstable output voltage used by multiple loads entering the... [more]

Application of System Dynamic Modelling for Evaluation of Carbon Mitigation Strategies in Cement Industries: A Comparative Overview of the Current State of the Art
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: carbon mitigation, cement industry, decision support, energy and environmental policy, green innovation, industrial emissions, management, policy evaluation, sustainable energy use, system dynamics
Cement is the key ingredient in concrete, which is the most consumed resource on the planet after water. As an energy-intensive industry, cement production is one of the largest sources of greenhouse emissions in the world today. The demand for cement is synonymous with the growth in infrastructure demand and per-capita gross domestic product in the world, calling the need for mitigation measures within the industry in order to contribute to the global climate change efforts. System dynamics (SD) is a simulation approach that is used for studying the nonlinear behaviours in complex systems over time, often used in industrial domains for emission forecasts as well as policy experimentation. With the adoption rates of mitigation strategies in the cement industry being inadequate, there is a need for improvisation in policymaking through better decision-support tools. In this paper, a comparative overview of the studies that specifically utilise the SD approach for evaluation of carbon mi... [more]

Implementation of an FPGA-Based Current Control and SVPWM ASIC with Asymmetric Five-Segment Switching Scheme for AC Motor Drives
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: AC motor drives, asymmetric five-segment switching, current control, FPGA control, SVPWM ASIC
This paper presents the design and implementation of an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) for a discrete-time current control and space-vector pulse-width modulation (SVPWM) with asymmetric five-segment switching scheme for AC motor drives. As compared to a conventional three-phase symmetric seven-segment switching SVPWM scheme, the proposed method involves five-segment two-phase switching in each switching period, so the inverter switching times and power loss can be reduced by 33%. In addition, the produced PWM signal is asymmetric with respect to the center-symmetric triangular carrier wave, and the voltage command signal from the discrete-time current control output can be given in each half period of the PWM switching time interval, hence increasing the system bandwidth and allowing the motor drive system with better dynamic response. For the verification of the proposed SVPWM modulation scheme, the current control function in the stationary reference frame is also in... [more]

Analysis and Simulations of the Primary Frequency Control during a System Split in Continental Europe Power System
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Continental Europe, frequency containment reserve, frequency control, power systems dynamics, power-frequency characteristic, system split
The occurrence of system separations in the power system of Continental Europe has been observed in recent decades as a critical event which might cause power imbalances higher than the reference incident specified per system design, representing an actual challenge for the stability and safe operation of the system. This work presents an analysis and simulations of the primary frequency control in the Continental Europe synchronous area in conditions of system separation. The adopted approach is based on fundamental aspects of the frequency-containment reserve process. The analysis takes an actual event into consideration, which determined the separation of the system in January 2021. The main purpose of the work is the development of specific models and simulations able to reproduce the actual split event. Due to specific arrangements discussed in detail, it is possible to obtain a substantial match between the simulations and the frequencies registered after the system split. The wo... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive, control, levitation, magnetic
Magnetic Levitation is a process in which an object is suspended with the support of the magnetic field. Despite being an unstable system, Magnetic Levitation Systems (MAGLEV) have profound applications in various fields of engineering. MAGLEV systems are sensitive, unstable, and nonlinear and uncertainties always pose a challenge in Controller Design. As a solution, adaptive controllers came into existence with adaptation mechanisms to cover the system uncertainties. In this study, a simple, novel, and an effective approach to the Enhanced Adaptive Control scheme is proposed for the ball position control and tracking of an unstable Magnetic Levitation System. The proposed Enhanced Model Reference Adaptive Scheme (EMRAC) follows the same phenomenon of the Model Reference Adaptive Scheme (MRAC) with a slight difference in its control strategy. A Novel Control Strategy for the Frequency and Voltage Regulation of Distribution Grids Using Electric Vehicle Batteries
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active and reactive power management, ancillary services, frequency control of power grid, grid-to-vehicle (G2V), plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs), power grid voltage regulation, power management, transportation electrification, vehicle-to-grid (V2G)
In this study, a double-loop control strategy is proposed for power grid frequency and voltage regulation using plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) connected to the grid through a three-level capacitor clamped inverter. The frequency and voltage regulation problem is first formulated using vector space analysis and phasor diagrams to find the boundaries and constraints in terms of the system parameters. The derived formulas are then utilized to design a double-loop controller using an exclusive phase detector control loop and a novel pulse width modulation (PWM) scheme to effectively regulate the frequency and voltage of the grid. The effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed control strategy are evaluated through simulation and experimental studies. This approach can benefit both the customers and the grid operator, as it facilitates utilizing the batteries of the connected PEVs to supply a portion or all of the active and reactive power demand, hence regulating the frequency and vol... April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: controller, FPGA, PID regulator, regulator, switched reluctance motor
This paper presents a proposal for a new type of regulator for switched reluctance motor (SRM) drives. The proposed regulator enables a significant extension of the rotational speed range and drive output power. This regulator is characterized by a complex structure, including two regulation modules: voltage and phase supply switch-on angle. The voltage module includes a proportional integral derivative (PID) voltage regulator. During its operation, the value of the phase supply switch-on angle and the width of the phase supply range are determined as a result of interpolation of the data previously determined in the simulation program. The other module contains the PID controller of the phase supply switch-on angle. The values of the angles included in the tables have been determined so as to ensure that the drive works with the greatest possible efficiency. The control method is determined based on the current operating parameters of the drive, i.e., torque and speed. The operation o... [more]

A Novel Intrusion Mitigation Unit for Interconnected Power Systems in Frequency Regulation to Enhance Cybersecurity
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: automatic intrusion mitigation unit, cybersecurity, FPID controller, interconnected power system
Cyberattacks (CAs) on modern interconnected power systems are currently a primary concern. The development of information and communication technology (ICT) has increased the possibility of unauthorized access to power system networks for data manipulation. Unauthorized data manipulation may lead to the partial or complete shutdown of a power network. In this paper, we propose a novel security unit that mitigates intrusion for an interconnected power system and compensates for data manipulation to augment cybersecurity. The studied two-area interconnected power system is first stabilized to alleviate frequency deviation and tie-line power between the areas by designing a fractional-order proportional integral derivative (FPID) controller. Since the parameters of the FPID controller can also be influenced by a CA, the proposed security unit, named the automatic intrusion mitigation unit (AIMU), guarantees control over such changes. The effectiveness of the AIMU is inspected against a CA... [more]

Combination of Thermal Modelling and Machine Learning Approaches for Fault Detection in Wind Turbine Gearboxes
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: condition monitoring, Fault Detection, Machine Learning, thermal modelling, wind energy, wind turbine gearbox
This research aims to bring together thermal modelling and machine learning approaches to improve the understanding on the operation and fault detection of a wind turbine gearbox. Recent fault detection research has focused on machine learning, black box approaches. Although it can be successful, it provides no indication of the physical behaviour. In this paper, thermal network modelling was applied to two datasets using SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) temperature data, with the aim of detecting a fault one month before failure. A machine learning approach was used on the same data to compare the results to thermal modelling. The results found that thermal network modelling could successfully detect a fault in many of the turbines examined and was validated by the machine learning approach for one of the datasets. For that same dataset, it was found that combining the thermal model losses and the machine learning approach by using the modelled losses as a feature in t... [more]

The integration and control of energy systems for power generation consists of multiple heterogeneous subsystems, such as chemical, electrochemical, and thermal, and contains challenges that arise from the multi-way interactions due to complex dynamic responses among the involved subsystems. The main motivation of this work is to design the control system for an autonomous automated and sustainable system that meets a certain power demand profile. A systematic methodology for the integration and control of a hybrid system that converts liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to hydrogen, which is subsequently used to generate electrical power in a high-temperature fuel cell that charges a Li-Ion battery unit, is presented. An advanced nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) framework is implemented to achieve this goal. The operational objective is the satisfaction of power demand while maintaining operation within a safe region and ensuring thermal and chemical balance. The proposed NMPC fram... [more]

Reduced-Order Modelling Applied to the Multigroup Neutron Diffusion Equation Using a Nonlinear Interpolation Method for Control-Rod Movement
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: eigenvalue problem, model order reduction, multigroup neutron diffusion, proper orthogonal decomposition, reactor criticality, reduced-order modelling
Producing high-fidelity real-time simulations of neutron diffusion in a reactor is computationally extremely challenging, due, in part, to multiscale behaviour in energy and space. In many scientific fields, including nuclear modelling, the application of reduced-order modelling can lead to much faster computation times without much loss of accuracy, paving the way for real-time simulation as well as multi-query problems such as uncertainty quantification and data assimilation. This paper compares two reduced-order models that are applied to model the movement of control rods in a fuel assembly for a given temperature profile. The first is a standard approach using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) to generate global basis functions, and the second, a new method, uses POD but produces global basis functions that are local in the parameter space (associated with the control-rod height). To approximate the eigenvalue problem in reduced space, a novel, nonlinear interpolation is propo... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: discrete-time current control, field oriented control, Lyapunov, multiphase induction motor, super-twisting control, terminal sliding mode
In this manuscript, the high-accuracy stator currents tracking issue is considered for a six-phase induction motor subject to external perturbations and uncertainties due to unmeasurable rotor currents and electrical parameter variations. To achieve the control goals, the common two-cascade controllers structure is required for this type of motor. The first controller in the outer loop consists of a proportional integral to regulate the speed. Then, the second is the proposed inner nonlinear stator currents controller based on a robust discrete-time terminal super-twisting algorithm supported by the time-delay estimation method. For the design procedure, the discrete-time stator currents dynamics are derived; for example, the vector of the matched perturbations and unmeasurable rotor currents are specified to simplify the estimation. A detailed stability analysis of the closed-loop error dynamics using Lyapunov theory is given. Finally, a real asymmetrical six-phase induction motor is... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: FCS-MPC, indirect matrix converter, motor drives, standard quadratic cost function, torque synchronization system, weight coefficient
In the dual-motor torque synchronization system fed by an indirect matrix converter (IMC), a finite set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) strategy based on a standard quadratic cost function was proposed to solve the open-loop problem of the torque synchronization error in a traditional closed-loop control strategy. Through the unified modeling of a dual-motor system, the torque synchronization error as a new state variable was involved in the switching state selection of the inverter stages, and the space vector modulation method was still used in the rectifier stage. At the same time, based on the unified prediction model, the auxiliary diagonal matrix was constructed, and the weight coefficients were solved offline by using the Lyapunov stability theory to ensure the convergence of each error term in the continuous control period. The proposed FCS-MPC strategy not only solves the problem of weight coefficient setting, but also makes it possible for a multi-motor synchronization sys... [more]

Wind turbines have become a significant part of the global power production and are still increasing in capacity. Pitch systems are an important part of modern wind turbines where they are used to apply aerodynamic braking for power regulation and emergency shutdowns. Studies have shown that the pitch system is responsible for up to 20% of the total down time of a wind turbine. Reducing the down time is an important factor for decreasing the total cost of energy of wind energy in order to make wind energy more competitive. Due to this, attention has come to condition monitoring and fault detection of such systems as an attempt to increase the reliability and availability, hereby the reducing the turbine downtime. Some methods for fault detection and condition monitoring of fluid power systems do exists, though not many are used in today’s pitch systems. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: air mobility, drift counteraction optimal control, energy management, fuel cell hybrid aircraft, stochastic optimal control
This paper investigates optimal power management of a fuel cell hybrid small unmanned aerial vehicle (sUAV) from the perspective of endurance (time of flight) maximization in a stochastic environment. Stochastic drift counteraction optimal control is exploited to obtain an optimal policy for power management that coordinates the operation of the fuel cell and battery to maximize the expected flight time while accounting for the limits on the rate of change of fuel cell power output and the orientation dependence of fuel cell efficiency. The proposed power management strategy accounts for known statistics in transitions of propeller power and climb angle during the mission, but does not require the exact preview of their time histories. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Lillgrund, sensitivity analysis, uncertainty analysis, wake steering, wind farm control
Wind farms experience significant efficiency losses due to the aerodynamic interaction between turbines. A possible control technique to minimize these losses is yaw-based wake steering. This paper investigates the potential for improved performance of the Lillgrund wind farm through a detailed calibration of a low-fidelity engineering model aimed specifically at yaw-based wake steering. The importance of each model parameter is assessed through a sensitivity analysis. The performance of the calibrated model is tested through an uncertainty analysis, which showed that the model has a significant bias but low uncertainty when comparing the predicted wake losses with measured wake losses. The model is used to optimize the annual energy production of the Lillgrund wind farm by determining yaw angles for specific inflow conditions. A significant energy gain is found whe... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: barriers, privacy, rapid realist review, smart local energy system
The purpose of this review is to investigate the nature of privacy concerns in the context of smart local energy systems (SLES) to understand how SLES providers can minimize both user concerns, and cause for concern, around privacy. We conducted a rapid realist review and thematic framework analysis against Bronfenbrenner’s socio−ecological model to understand privacy concerns in different contexts. A common privacy concern was that sharing detailed energy use data had the potential to reveal information about home life, and to intrude upon people’s sense of autonomy, choice, and control. Evidence suggests that people are willing to accept new data sharing technologies if the benefits of doing so are clear, anticipated, and mutually beneficial. Building trust, through increasing knowledge and understanding, was a mechanism for overcoming privacy concerns, but this was mediated by the organization providing the information. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: doubly-fed induction generator, field oriented control, full order observer, grid connected system, sensorless control, wind power system
This paper focuses on the performance analysis of a sensorless control for a Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) in grid-connected operation for turbine-based wind generation systems. With reference to a conventional stator flux based Field Oriented Control (FOC), a full-order adaptive observer is implemented and a criterion to calculate the observer gain matrix is provided. Keywords: adaptive controller, DC-DC buck converter, global sliding mode control, lyapunov stability, switching surface
This paper proposes a novel adaptive intelligent global sliding mode control for the tracking control of a DC-DC buck converter with time-varying uncertainties/disturbances. The proposed control law is formulated using a switching surface that eliminates the reaching phase and ensures the existence of the sliding action from the start.
