Control Comparison for the Coordinate Transformation of an Asymmetric Dual Three Phase Synchronous Motor in Healthy and Single-Phase Open Fault States
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: asymmetric dual three phase synchronous motor, double dq transform, magneto motive force, vector space decomposition
The coordinate transformation method of asymmetric dual three phase synchronous motor (ADTP-SM) is a Double dq transform using two dq-axes and a vector space decomposition (VSD) model method using the orthogonality of ADTP-SM. There are several studies comparing the two methods in a healthy state, but few in a single-phase open fault state. In the healthy, when the VSD model is applied, different harmonic orders of the phase current are projected onto the dq and xy-axes (the axis for controlling harmonics of the phase current), and the two-axes are orthogonal, so it can be controlled stably. In the single-phase open fault state, the same current control logic as in the healthy situation is applied. When applying the Double dq transform, the dq-axis of the fault set fluctuates, and it affects the healthy set, so it cannot be controlled stably. When applying the VSD model, if both the dq-axis and the xy-axis are controlled, the two coordinate systems do not have orthogonality and cannot... [more]

Passive Model Predictive Control on a Two-Body Self-Referenced Point Absorber Wave Energy Converter
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Model Predictive Control, passive control, two-body point absorber, wave energy converter
Wave energy is nowadays one of the most promising renewable energy sources; however, wave energy technology has not reached the fully-commercial stage, yet. One key aspect to achieve this goal is to identify an effective control strategy for each selected Wave Energy Converter (WEC), in order to extract the maximum energy from the waves, while respecting the physical constraints of the device. Model Predictive Control (MPC) can inherently satisfy these requirements. Generally, MPC is formulated as a quadratic programming problem with linear constraints (e.g., on position, speed and Power Take-Off (PTO) force). Since, in the most general case, this control technique requires bidirectional power flow between the PTO system and the grid, it has similar characteristics as reactive control. This means that, under some operating conditions, the energy losses may be equivalent, or even larger, than the energy yielded. As many WECs are designed to only allow unidirectional power flow, it is ne... [more]

Multiple-Vector Model Predictive Control with Fuzzy Logic for PMSM Electric Drive Systems
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: deadbeat function, fuzzy logic controller, Model Predictive Control, multiple-vector
This article presents a multiple-vector finite-control-set model predictive control (MV-FCS-MPC) scheme with fuzzy logic for permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) used in electric drive systems. The proposed technique is based on discrete space vector modulation (DSVM). The converter’s real voltage vectors are utilized along with new virtual voltage vectors to form switching sequences for each sampling period in order to improve the steady-state performance. Furthermore, to obtain the reference voltage vector (VV) directly from the reference current and to reduce the calculation load of the proposed MV-FCS-MPC technique, a deadbeat function (DB) is added. Subsequently, the best real or virtual voltage vector to be applied in the next sampling instant is selected based on a certain cost function. Moreover, a fuzzy logic controller is employed in the outer loop for controlling the speed of the rotor. Accordingly, the dynamic response of the speed is improved and the difficulty of t... [more]

The Impact of Occupancy-Driven Models on Cooling Systems in Commercial Buildings
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cooling systems, Energy Efficiency, Monte-Carlo simulation, non-linear optimization, occupancy, smart control
Cooling systems play a key role in maintaining human comfort inside buildings. The key challenges that are facing conventional cooling systems are the rapid growth of total cooling energy and annual electricity consumption in commercial buildings. This is even more significant in countries with an arid climate, where the cooling systems are typically working 80% of the year. Thus, there has been growing interest in developing smart control models to assign optimal cooling setpoints in recent years. In the present work, we propose an occupancy-based control model that is based on a non-linear optimization algorithm to efficiently reduce energy consumption and costs. The model utilizes a Monte-Carlo method to determine the approximate occupancy schedule for building thermal zones. We compare our proposed model to three different strategies, namely: always-on thermostat, schedule-based model, and a rule-based occupancy-driven model. Unlike these three rule-based algorithms, the proposed o... [more]

Parasitic Effects of PWM-VSI Control Leading to Torque Harmonics in AC Drives
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: 6th harmonic, AC machine, induction motor, PWM inverter, space phasor modulation, torque ripple
Precise torque control without pulsations is one of the major quality issues in pulse-width modulated voltage-source inverter (PWM-VSI) drives. Theoretically, it could be postulated that at frequencies of some kHz, the machine’s inertia absorbs switching frequency torque harmonics, and the resulting torque becomes smooth; though, in reality, parasitic effects in voltage source inverters may cause additional torque harmonics of low order. In particular, first, second and sixth torque harmonics are observed. Such torque harmonics are especially dangerous for normal drive operation, since they may be amplified by drive train resonances at corresponding rotational velocities. New parasitic effects in PWM-VSI control, leading to torque harmonic of low order, are described in the paper, and recommendations for their compensation are given.

Uncontrolled Electric Vehicle Charging Impacts on Distribution Electric Power Systems with Primarily Residential, Commercial or Industrial Loads
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: charging, distribution, electric vehicle, grid impacts, integration, profile
An increase in Electric Vehicles (EV) will result in higher demands on the distribution electric power systems (EPS) which may result in thermal line overloading and low voltage violations. To understand the impact, this work simulates two EV charging scenarios (home- and work-dominant) under potential 2030 EV adoption levels on 10 actual distribution feeders that support residential, commercial, and industrial loads. The simulations include actual driving patterns of existing (non-EV) vehicles taken from global positioning system (GPS) data. The GPS driving behaviors, which explain the spatial and temporal EV charging demands, provide information on each vehicles travel distance, dwell locations, and dwell durations. Then, the EPS simulations incorporate the EV charging demands to calculate the power flow across the feeder. Simulation results show that voltage impacts are modest (less than 0.01 p.u.), likely due to robust feeder designs and the models only represent the high-voltage (... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control modes on multi-terminal HVDC system, high-voltage direct current, multi-terminal HVDC systems, Newton method, power flow
The use of Direct Current (DC) transmission links in power systems is increasing continuously. Thus, it is important to develop new techniques to model the inclusion of these devices in network analysis, in order to allow studies of the operation and expansion planning of large-scale electric power systems. In this context, the main objective of this paper is to present a new methodology for a simultaneous AC-DC power flow for a multi-terminal High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) system with a generic representation of the DC network. The proposed methodology is based on a full Newton formulation for solving the AC-DC power flow problem. Equations representing the converters and steady-state control strategies are included in a power flow problem formulation, resulting in an expanded Jacobian matrix of the Newton method. Some results are presented based on HVDC test systems to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Fractional Order Fuzzy Based Virtual Inertia Controller Design for Frequency Stability in Isolated Hybrid Power Systems
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fractional order, frequency and power, fuzzy logic controller, HPSREG system, virtual inertia
In the present era, electrical power system is evolving to an inverter-dominated system from a synchronous machine-based system, with the hybrid power systems (HPS) and renewable energy generators (REGs) increasing penetration. These inverters dominated HPS have no revolving body, therefore, diminishing the overall grid inertia. Such a low system inertia could create issues for HPS with REG (HPSREG) such as system instability and lack of resilience under disturbances. A control strategy, therefore, is required in order to manage this task besides benefitting from the full potential of the REGs. A virtual inertia control for an HPSREG system built with the principle of fractional order (FO) by incorporation of proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller and fuzzy logic controller (FLC) has been projected. It is utilized by adding virtual inertia into HPSREG system control loop and referred to as FO based fuzzy PID controller for this study. Simulation outcomes states that the advo... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: distributed explicit model predictive control, electrolyzer, fuel cell, hybridization, Hydrogen, power management system, power-hardware-in-the-loop
To deal with energy transition due to climate change and a rise in average global temperature, photovoltaic (PV) conversion appears to be a promising technology in sunny regions. However, PV production is directly linked with weather conditions and the day/night cycle, which makes it intermittent and random. Therefore, it makes sense to combine it with Energy Storage Systems (ESS) to ensure long-term energy availability for non-interconnected micro-grids. Among all technological solutions, electrolytic hydrogen produced by renewable energies seems an interesting candidate. In this context, this paper proposes a control strategy dedicated to hydrogen storage integration in micro-grids for a better use of PV production. The objective is to optimize the management of the micro-grid with proton exchange membrane Fuel Cell (FC), alkaline Electrolyzer (El), lithium-ion Batteries Energy Storage System (BESS) and PV, according to the system state and PV production intermittency. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: air circulation, hygrothermal control, solar-heat storage, ventilated solar roof
Indoor solar-heating systems that use ventilated roofs have drawn attention in recent years. The effectiveness and efficiency of such air-heating systems vary depending on the design and operation methods. In Japan, by introducing outside air into a ventilated roof cavity and circulating the air indoors, systems that simultaneously obtain ventilation, solar heating, and heat-storage effects have been actively developed. The conventional systems intake a large volume of outside air to increase the solar heat collection effect. However, there is a risk of heat loss and over-drying when a large amount of cold dry air during winter is introduced. In this paper, plans are presented for improving these solar heating and heat-storage effects by preventing over-drying using indoor air circulation via ventilated cavities in the roof and indoor wall. By comparing the results of the proposed system with those of the conventional system via numerical simulation, the heating load is found to be red... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: angular misalignment, condition monitoring, shaft misalignment detection, supervised machine learning, wind generator
With a continued strong increase in wind generator applications, the condition monitoring of wind turbine systems has become ever more important in ensuring the availability and reduced cost of produced power. One of the key turbine conditions requiring constant monitoring is the generator shaft alignment, which if compromised and untreated can lead to catastrophic system failures. This study explores the possibility of employing supervised machine learning methods on the readily available generator controller loop signals to achieve detection of shaft misalignment condition. This could provide a highly noninvasive and low-cost solution for misalignment monitoring in comparison with the current misalignment monitoring field practice that relies on invasive and costly drivetrain vibration analysis. The study utilises signal datasets measured on a dedicated doubly fed induction generator test rig to demonstrate that high consistency and accuracy recognition of shaft angular misalignment... Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DC microgrid, distribution generation units, Fault Detection, higher order sliding mode observer, Lyapunov’s stability, multi sensor faults
Fault detection in a Direct Current (DC) microgrid with multiple interconnections of distributed generation units (DGUs) is an interesting topic of research. The occurrence of any sensor fault in the DC microgrid should be detected immediately by the fault detection network to achieve an overall stable performance of the system. This work focuses on sensor fault diagnosis of voltage and current sensors in interconnected DGUs of the microgrid. Two separate higher order sliding mode observers (HOSM) based on model dynamics are designed to estimate the voltage and current and generate the residuals for detecting the faulty sensors in DGUs. Multiplicative single and multiple sensor faults are considered in voltage and current sensors. By appropriate selection of threshold, single and multiple sensor fault detection strategies are formulated. A hierarchical controller is designed to ensure equal sharing of current among the DGUs of the DC microgrid and stabilize the system. Simulations are... [more]

This study aimed to develop a three-phase permanent-magnet synchronous motor drive system with improvement in current harmonics. Considering the harmonic components in the induced electromotive force of a permanent-magnet synchronous motor, the offline response of the induced electromotive force (EMF) was measured for fast Fourier analysis, the main harmonic components were obtained, and the voltage required to reduce the current harmonic components in the corresponding direct (d-axis) and quadrature (q-axis) axes was calculated. In the closed-loop control of the direct axis and quadrature axis current in the rotor reference frame, the compensation amount of the induced EMF with harmonic components was added. Metaheuristic Based Solution for the Non‐Linear Controller of the Multiterminal High‐Voltage Direct Current Networks
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: artificial bee colony algorithm (ABC), multiobjective‐optimizations, proportional‐integral (P‐I) controller, voltage source converter, VSC‐based MT‐HVDC grids
The purpose of this study is to improve the P-I controllers of the voltage-source converters (VSC)-based multiterminal high voltage direct-current (MT-HVDC) networks. Since the VSCs are the non-linear elements of the MT-HVDC stations, the classical optimization methods, which approximately implement the linear model to optimize the P-I controllers of the VSCs, do not generate optimal results. Therefore, this paper presents a novel technique to optimize the VSC-based MT-HVDC grids’ P-I controllers by embedding the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm. The voltage-droop control method is employed at on-shore grids to ensure the active and reactive power balance within MT-HVDC networks. During an evaluation, achieved via a detailed four-terminal MT-HVDC model designed in PSCAD/EMTDC, the improved results obtained under different dynamic situations such as unbalance wind power generation, change in load demand at the on-shore side grids, and eventual VSC disconnection, respectively.
