Fuzzy Controllers Instead of Classical PIDs in HVAC Equipment: Dusting Off a Well-Known Technology and Today’s Implementation for Better Energy Efficiency and User Comfort
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: AHU, embedded systems, fuzzy control, fuzzy logic, hardware controllers, HVAC, indoor air, intelligent control
Cutting-edge building energy management systems (BEMS) interact with heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) systems, which generally account for much of the energy consumption. Major attention is focused on the BEMS themselves, barring on-field equipment. In HVAC equipment, sub-optimal controller settings may lead to energy losses and user discomfort, for instance, due to oscillations of air temperature and fan speeds. The way to solve this problem could be to replace classical PID controllers with an alternative concept that does not require tuning and works optimally for a wide range of parameters. This paper compares a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) with a standard PID for a model-based simulation of an HVAC system in Simulink for different conditions using real building measurement data. The end result is the implementation of the developed methods in a newly designed universal control board for air handling units (AHU). The proposed FLC achieves better integral control qualit... April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: accessibility, decision support, electric cars, traffic model, transport ecology
In recent years, policymakers of urban agglomerations in various regions of the world have been striving to reduce environmental pollution from harmful exhaust and noise emissions. Restrictions on conventional vehicles entering the inner city are being introduced and the introduction of low-emission measures, including electric ones, is being promoted. This paper presents a method for scenario analysis applied to study the reduction of exhaust emissions by introducing electric vehicles in a selected city. The original scenario analyses relating to real problems faced by contemporary metropolitan areas are based on the VISUM tool (PTV Headquarters for Europe: PTV Planung Transport Verkehr AG, 76131 Karlsruhe, Germany). For the case study, the transport model of the city of Bielsko-Biala (Poland) was used to conduct experiments with different forms of participation of electric vehicles on the one hand and traffic restrictions for high emission vehicles on the other hand. Metadata Schemas and Ontologies for Building Energy Applications: A Critical Review and Use Case Analysis
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: energy audit, fault detection and diagnostics, metadata, ontology, optimal control, semantic model, smart building
Digital and intelligent buildings are critical to realizing efficient building energy operations and a smart grid. With the increasing digitalization of processes throughout the life cycle of buildings, data exchanged between stakeholders and between building systems have grown significantly. However, a lack of semantic interoperability between data in different systems is still prevalent and hinders the development of energy-oriented applications that can be reused across buildings, limiting the scalability of innovative solutions. Addressing this challenge, our review paper systematically reviews metadata schemas and ontologies that are at the foundation of semantic interoperability necessary to move toward improved building energy operations. The review finds 40 schemas that span different phases of the building life cycle, most of which cover commercial building operations and, in particular, control and monitoring systems. The paper’s deeper review and analysis of five popular sch... [more]

Harmonic Mitigation in Electric Railway Systems Using Improved Model Predictive Control
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active power filter, electric railway system, harmonic mitigation, Model Predictive Control, synchronous detection
An electric multiple unit (EMU) high-speed train is the dynamic load that degrades the power quality in an electric railway system. Therefore, a power quality improvement system using an active power filter (APF) must be considered. Due to the oscillating load current in the dynamic load condition, a fast and accurate harmonic current-tracking performance is required. As such, this paper proposes the design of a model predictive control (MPC) since the minimization of cost function in the MPC process can suitably determine APF switching states. The design technique of MPC is based on the APF mathematical model. This controller was designed to compensate the time delay in the digital control. Moreover, the synchronous detection (SD) method applied the reference current calculations, as shown in this paper. To verify the proposed MPC, the overall control of APF was implemented on a eZdsp F28335 board by using the hardware-in-the-loop technique. The testing results indicated that the prop... [more]

Spectrum Analysis for Condition Monitoring and Fault Diagnosis of Ventilation Motor: A Case Study
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fault diagnosis, Fourier analysis, power quality, signal denoising, wavelet transform
In modern power systems, since most loads are inductive by nature, there is an ongoing power quality issue and researchers’ interest in improving the power factor is widespread, as inductive loads have a low power factor that depletes the system’s capacity and has an adverse effect on the voltage level. The measurement and acute analysis of voltage- and current-level waveforms is essential to tackle power quality issues. This article presents a detailed case study and analysis of real-time data measured from a frequency converter, which is used to operate the motor of a ventilation system. The output of the frequency converter is a highly distorted current wave. A hybrid Fourier transform (FT)- and wavelet transform-based solution has been proposed here to diagnose and identify the causes of motor failure in the ventilation system. The traditional FT did not give a detailed analysis of this type of signal, which is highly contaminated by noise. Therefore, first, the signal is preproces... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: hybrid air conditioning system, model predictive control (MPC), radiant floor heating, railway passenger station, RC model
A model predictive control (MPC) system with an adaptive building model based on thermal-electrical analogy for the hybrid air conditioning system using the radiant floor and all-air system for heating is proposed in this paper to solve the heating supply control difficulties of the railway station on Tibetan Plateau. The MPC controller applies an off-line method of updating the building model to improve the accuracy of predicting indoor conditions. The control performance of the adaptive MPC is compared with the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control, as well as an MPC without adaptive model through simulation constructed based on a TRNSYS-MATLAB co-simulation testbed. The results show that the implementation of the adaptive MPC can improve indoor thermal comfort and reduce 22.2% energy consumption compared to the PID control. Adaptive Online-Learning Volt-Var Control for Smart Inverters Using Deep Reinforcement Learning
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: deep reinforcement learning, low-voltage grid, reactive power, smart inverter, volt-var-optimization, voltage control
The increasing penetration of the power grid with renewable distributed generation causes significant voltage fluctuations. Providing reactive power helps balancing the voltage in the grid. This paper proposes a novel adaptive volt-var control algorithm on the basis of deep reinforcement learning. The learning agent is an online-learning deep deterministic policy gradient that is applicable under real-time conditions in smart inverters for reactive power management. The algorithm only uses input data from the grid connection point of the inverter itself; thus, no additional communication devices are needed and it can be applied individually to any inverter in the grid. The proposed volt-var control is successfully simulated at various grid connection points in a 21-bus low-voltage distribution test feeder. The resulting voltage behavior is analyzed and a systematic voltage reduction is observed both in a static grid environment and a dynamic environment. The proposed algorithm enables... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active distribution grids, distributed energy resources, Model Predictive Control, renewable energy sources, storage management, voltage control
The development of strategies for distribution network management is an essential element for increasing network performance and reducing the upgrade of physical assets. This paper analyzes a multi-timescale framework to control the voltage of distribution grids characterized by a high penetration of renewables. The multi-timescale solution is based on three levels that coordinate Distributed Generation (DG) and Energy Storage Systems (ESSs), but differs in terms of the timescales and objectives of the control levels. Realistic load and photovoltaic generation profiles were created for cloudy and clean sky conditions to evaluate the performance features of the multi-timescale framework. The proposed solution was also compared with different frameworks featuring two of the three levels, to highlight the contribution of the combination of the three levels in achieving the best performance.

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: chiller, data-driven, fault detection and diagnosis (FDD), Machine Learning
Fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) systems enable high cost savings and energy savings that could have economic and environmental impact. This study aims to develop and validate a data-driven FDD system for a chiller. The system uses historical operation data to capture quantitative correlations among system variables. This study evaluated the effectiveness and robustness of eight FDD classification methods based on the experimental data of the chiller (the ASHRAE 1043-RP project). The training data used for the FDD system is classified into four cases. Moreover, true and false positive rates are used to characterize the performance of the classification methods. The results show that local fault is not significantly sensitive to training data, and shows high classification accuracy for all cases. The system fault has a significant effect on the amount of data and the severity levels on the classification accuracy.

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: grid-connected photovoltaic system, maximum power point tracking (MPPT), sliding mode control, wireless communication
Grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems are designed to provide energy to the grid. This energy transfer must fulfil some requirements such as system stability, power quality and reliability. Thus, the aim of this work is to design and control a grid-connected PV system via wireless to guarantee the correct operation of the system. It is crucial to monitor and supervise the system to control and/or detect faults in real time and in a remote way. To do that, the DC/DC converter and the DC/AC converter of the grid-connected PV system are controlled wirelessly, reducing costs in cabling installations. The used control methods are the sliding for the DC/DC converter and the Proportional-Integral (PI) for the inverter. The sliding control is robust, ensures system stability under perturbations, and is proven to work well via wireless. The PI control is simple and effective, proving its validity through wireless too. In addition, the effect of the communications is analysed in both controll... [more]

Data-Driven Fault Diagnosis for Automotive PEMFC Systems Based on the Steady-State Identification
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fault diagnosis, PEMFC system, relevance vector machine, steady-state identification
Data-driven diagnosis methods for faults of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) systems can diagnose faults through the state variable data collected during the operation of the PEMFC system. However, the state variable data collected from the PEMFC system during the stack switching between different operating points can easily cause false alarms, such that the practical value of the diagnosis system is reduced. To overcome this problem, a fault diagnosis method for PEMFC systems based on steady-state identification is proposed in this paper. The support vector data description (SVDD) and relevance vector machine (RVM) optimized by the artificial bee colony (ABC) are used for the steady-state identification and fault diagnosis. The density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) and linear least squares fitting (LLSF) are used to identify the abnormal data in datasets and estimate change rates of the system state variables respectively. The proposed method c... [more]

Reaching Law Based Sliding Mode Control of Sampled Time Systems
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: reaching law approach, sampled time systems, sliding mode control
In this paper, discrete time reaching law-based sliding mode control of continuous time systems is considered. In sliding mode control methods, usually the assumption of bounded absolute values of disturbances is used. However in many cases, the rate of change of the disturbance is also bounded. In the presented approach, this knowledge is used to improve the control precision and reduce the undesirable chattering. Another advantage of the proposed method is that the disturbance does not have to satisfy the matching conditions. In the paper two new reaching laws are analyzed, one of them ensures the switching quasi-sliding motion and the other the non-switching motion. For both of them, the robustness is assessed by calculating the quasi-sliding mode band width, as well as the greatest possible state error values. Specifically, the state errors are not considered only at the sampling instants, as is usual for discrete time systems, but the bounds on the continuous values “between” the... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: current modulator, diode rectifier, sinusoidal current, supporting system, three-phase system
The article presents various concepts of three-phase power rectifiers with improved quality of converted electric power. This effect is obtained by modulating the currents in the DC output circuits of the rectifiers by means of power electronics controlled voltage or current sources, working as a so-called voltage or current modulators. For further quality improvement of the grid currents of the analyzed systems, it was proposed to use an additional controlled current source connected in parallel to the DC load, hereinafter referred to as a supporting system. The original elaborated method of controlling this source (supporting system) was presented. The main goal of the work was to propose a solution for an effective method of improving the quality of energy conversion in rectifier systems, especially high power ones, by using controlled current sources in DC circuits, operating as the power electronics current modulator and the supporting system.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: feedback linearization, hybrid power system, Laguerre wavelet, microgrid, recurrent NeuroFuzzy, SOFC
The article portrays an adaptive control paradigm for the swift response of a solid-oxide fuel cell (SOFC) in a grid-connected microgrid. The control scheme is based on an adaptive feedback-linearization-embedded fully recurrent NeuroFuzzy Laguerre wavelet control (FBL-FRNF-Lag-WC) framework. The nonlinear functions of feedback linearization (FBL) are estimated using a fully recurrent NeuroFuzzy Laguerre wavelet control (FRNF-Lag-WC) architecture with a recurrent Gaussian membership function in the antecedent part and a recurrent Laguerre wavelet in the consequent part, respectively. The performance of the proposed control scheme is validated for various stability, quality, and reliability factors obtained through a simulation testbed implemented in MATLAB/Simulink. The proposed scheme is compared against adaptive NeuroFuzzy, PID, and adaptive PID (aPID) control schemes using different performance parameters for a grid-connected load over 24 h.

Millions of three-wheelers in large cities of Asia and Africa contribute to the already increasing urban air pollutants. An emerging method to reduce adverse effects of the growing three-wheeler fleet is hybrid-electric technology. The overall efficiency of a hybrid electric vehicle heavily depends on the power management strategy used in controlling the main powertrain components of the vehicle. Recent studies highlight the need for a comprehensive report on developing an easy-to-implement and efficient control strategy for hybrid electric three-wheelers. Thus, in the present study, a design methodology for a rule-based supervisory controller of a pre-transmission parallel hybrid three-wheeler based on an optimal control strategy (i.e., dynamic programming) is proposed. The optimal control problem for minimizing fuel, emissions (i.e., HC, CO and NOx) and gear shift frequency are solved using dynamic programming (DP). Numerical issues of DP are analyzed and trade-offs between optimizin... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: dc-link voltage balance, one-cycle control, reactive power compensation, static VAR compensator
This paper presents a new multilevel one-cycle control (OCC) technique for a five-level diode-clamped multilevel converter (DCMC)-based static VAR compensator (STATCOM). The OCC algorithm in combination with multi-carrier level-shifted PWM control is used in the proposed five-level DCMC-based STATCOM. The automatic dc link voltage balance is simply realized by four voltage compensators presented as the part of the OCC controller. In this paper the OCC principle of a two-level converter-based STATCOM is reviewed and extended to the five-level DCMC-based STATCOM. The proposed multilevel OCC control method of the five-level DCMC-based STATCOM in steady-state and dynamic operation modes is verified by simulation and experimental results.

One-Cycle Fourier Finite Position Set PLL

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: distorted voltage, Finite Set Position, harmonics components, Model Predictive Control, One-Cycle Fourier filter, PLL
This work introduces a new method for computing the angular position of the voltage of the grid—based on a finite set of angles—in the condition of failures in the distribution systems, as symmetrical and asymmetric voltage sags, unbalance, harmonic distortions, and frequency changes. This method is inspired in the model predictive control finite control set principles. In this way, the proposal employs the One-Cycle Fourier filter (OCF) to estimate the positive sequence of the voltage vector into the stationary αβ-frame. The positive sequence voltages extracted from this filter is then handled by an algorithm that is implemented by a finite position set (FPS) for estimating the phase angle. In this way, the minimized cost function chooses the optimal angular position while using the predicted behavior of the grid voltage vector elements in dq frame. The structure, called One-Cycle Fourier Finite position Set Phase Locked Loop (OCF-FS-PLL), here is a composition of the OCF and the FPS.... [more]

Co-Design of CVT-Based Electric Vehicles

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: co-design, component sizing, continuously variable transmission, convex programming, electric vehicle, Energy Efficiency, optimal control
For an electric vehicle (EV) with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), a novel convex programming (CP)-based co-design method is proposed to minimize the total-cost-of-ownership (TCO). The integration of the electric machine (EM) and the CVT is the primary focus. The optimized system with co-design reduces the TCO by around 5.9% compared to a non-optimized CVT-based EV (based on off-the-shelf components) and by around 2% compared to the EV equipped with a single-speed transmission (SST). By taking advantage of the control and design freedom provided by the CVT, the optimal CVT, EM and battery sizes are found to reduce the system cost. It simultaneously finds the optimal CVT speed ratio and air-flow rate of the cooling system reducing the energy consumption. The strength of co-design is highlighted by comparing to a sequential design, and insights into the design of a low-power EV that is energy-efficient and cost-effective for urban driving are provided. Improving Energy Efficiency of Flexible Pneumatic Systems
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: automatically controlled pressure regulator, Energy Efficiency, energy savings, flexible production systems, product mix
During pneumatic control system design, the critical value for choosing the appropriate pneumatic actuator is the weight of the workpiece. In the case of flexible production systems, which are the core part of the Industry 4.0 (I4.0) concept, the weight of the workpieces is often variable, since the crucial feature of this kind of production is its ability to deal with variable parts. Therefore, in order to deal with the variable weight of parts, a pneumatic actuator is chosen according to the heaviest part. However, according to another I4.0 principle, energy efficient operation of machines, the previous criteria for choosing a pneumatic actuator is energy efficient only when handling the heaviest part. In all other cases, operation of the pneumatic actuator is suboptimal in terms of energy efficiency. Aiming to solve this problem, this paper considers the possibility of using a new pressure regulator instead of traditional manually adjusted pressure regulators. This regulator provide... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fault throw, glutenite, incised valley, main controlling factors, oil production
The glutenite reservoirs discovered in the Jiyang depression in Bohai Bay contribute greatly to proven oil and gas resources, which have reached 1.27 billion cubic meters. Both insufficient studies on the glutenite distribution and incomplete understanding of the corresponding geology restrict further oil energy extraction. Hence, it is necessary to study the controlling factors of glutenite development. Sedimentation, tectonic faults, geophysical data, etc., was used in this paper to study these factors. Four main controlling factors involved in the development of glutenite fan bodies have been studied and summarized: the fault ramp controls the glutenite fan, the fault characteristics control the glutenite acreage, the fault throw controls the thickness of the glutenite, and the dimensions of the incised valleys control the glutenite transport capacity. Model-Based Analysis of Flow Separation Control in a Curved Diffuser by a Vibration Wall
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: flow separation, model-based analysis, unsteady flow control, vibration wall
Vibration wall control is an important active flow control technique studied by many researchers. Although current researches have shown that the control performance is greatly affected by the frequency and amplitude of the vibration wall, the mechanism hiding behind the phenomena is still not clear, due to the complex interaction between the vibration wall and flow separation. To reveal the control mechanism of vibration walls, we propose a simplified model to help us understand the interaction between the forced excitation (from the vibration wall) and self-excitation (from flow instability). The simplified model can explain vibration wall flow control behaviors obtained by numerical simulation, which show that the control performance will be optimized at a certain reduced vibration frequency or amplitude. Also, it is shown by the analysis of maximal Lyapunov exponents that the vibration wall is able to change the flow field from a disordered one into an ordered one. Consistent with... [more]

With the advent of direct current (DC) loads such as LED lighting, IT equipment, electric vehicles, and DC powers generated from renewable energy sources, low voltage DC (LVDC) distribution system is becoming a hot issue. One of the hurdles in the LVDC distribution system is arc flash at the contact points that occurs during the circuit is opening. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: current limitation, grid-connected converter, imbalance power, imbalance power equation, maximum input power limit (MIPL), non-severe remote voltage sag
In the transient process of the grid-connected converter (GCC), the existing research mainly focuses on the impact of the control loops. Little attention is paid to the transient stability issues driven by the imbalance between the input power and output power of GCC. This paper shows that the transient stability issues will still exist even if ignoring the dynamics of phase-locked loop (PLL) and current loop. In this paper, the models of the AC grid and the GCC are built under the assumption that the dynamics of the PLL and current loop are ignored. Then, by analyzing the transient process of GCC under non-severe remote voltage sag, the effects of the imbalance power on the transient stability of GCC are discussed. Moreover, for the GCC to operate stably after the transient process, there should be a maximum input power limit (MIPL) for GCC, and the imbalance power equation is applied in this paper to determine the transient stability of GCC.
