March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biogas, green ammonia, Hydrogen, levelized cost of hydrogen, on-site hydrogen refuelling station, water electrolysis
In this study, the authors present a techno-economic assessment of on-site hydrogen refuelling stations (450 kg/day of H2) based on different hydrogen sources and production technologies. Green ammonia, biogas, and water have been considered as hydrogen sources while cracking, autothermal reforming, and electrolysis have been selected as the hydrogen production technologies. The electric energy requirements of the hydrogen refuelling stations (HRSs) are internally satisfied using the fuel cell technology as power units for ammonia and biogas-based configurations and the PV grid-connected power plant for the water-based one. The hydrogen purification, where necessary, is performed by means of a Palladium-based membrane unit. Finally, the same hydrogen compression, storage, and distribution section are considered for all configurations. The sizing and the energy analysis of the proposed configurations have been carried out by simulation models adequately developed. Moreover, the economic... [more]
Analysis and Recommendations for LED Catastrophic Failure Due to Voltage Stress

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: catastrophic failure, filament lamp, heat sink type lamp, LED lamps, power quality, voltage disturbances
Light-emitting diode (LED) lighting has, compared to other types of lighting, a significantly lower energy consumption. However, the perceived service life is also important for customer satisfaction and here there is a discrepancy between customers’ experience and manufacturers’ statements. Many customers experience a significantly shorter service life than claimed by the manufacturers. An experiment was carried out in the Pehr Högström Laboratory at Luleå University of Technology in Skellefteå, Sweden to investigate whether voltage disturbances could explain this discrepancy. Over 1000 LED lamps were exposed to high levels of voltage disturbances for more than 6000 h; the failure rate from this experiment was similar to the one from previous experiments in which lamps were exposed to normal voltage. The discrepancy thus remains, even though some possible explanations have emerged from the project’s results. The lamps were exposed to five different types of voltage disturbances: short... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: energy storage system, genetic algorithm (GA), minimum electrical energy cost for the consumer, optimal home energy management strategy, plug-in electric vehicle, Solar Photovoltaic, time-of-use (TOU) tariffs
It is well documented that both solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and electric vehicles (EVs) positively impact the global environment. However, the integration of high PV resources into distribution networks creates new challenges because of the uncertainty of PV power generation. Additionally, high power consumption during many EV charging operations at a certain time of the day can be stressful for the distribution network. Stresses on the distribution network influence higher electricity tariffs, which negatively impact consumers. Therefore, a home energy management system is one of the solutions to control electricity consumption to reduce electrical energy costs. In this paper, a meta-heuristic-based optimization of a home energy management strategy is presented with the goal of electrical energy cost minimization for the consumer under the time-of-use (TOU) tariffs. The proposed strategy manages the operations of the plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) and the energy storage system (ES... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, flow, heat transfer, mini-channel, Simcenter STAR-CCM+ software
The present work describes an experimental study and CFD modeling of fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics in a heat sink with several asymmetrical heated mini-channels. The data from the experimental research were the basis for numerical calculations. During experiments, the temperature measurement of the outer heater surface was performed by infrared thermography to verify the results of numerical calculations performed in Simcenter STAR-CCM+ software. The main objective was to determine the values of the parameters tested to evaluate the intensity of the heat transfer processes. In the numerical simulations, important variables, mainly the working fluid, heater material, the spatial orientation of the test section, and the number of mini-channels, were assumed. The results of the numerical computations were discussed. Due to simulations, it was possible to indicate which parameters tested in terms of heat transfer turned out to be the most effective. Furthermore, a mesh depen... [more]

Zexu Chen, Jing Shi, Zhaofang Song, Wangwang Yang, Zitong Zhang
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: demand response, microgrid, power system, smart grid
In recent years, demand response (DR) has played an increasingly important role in maintaining the safety, stability and economic operation of power grid. Due to the continuous running state and extremely fast speed of response, the aggregated inverter air conditioning (IAC) load is considered as the latest and most ideal object for DR. However, it is easy to cause load rebound when the aggregated IAC load participates in DR. Existing methods for controlling air conditioners to participate in DR cannot meet the following three requirements at the same time: basic DR target, load rebound suppression, and users’ comfort. Therefore, this paper has proposed a genetic algorithm based temperature-queuing control method for aggregated IAC load control, which could suppress load rebound under the premise of ensuring the DR target and take users’ comfort into account. Firstly, the model of the aggregated IAC load is established by the Monte Carlo method. Then the start and end time of DR are se... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: attenuation, carbonates, OBC, scattering, VSP
Previous studies performed in Abu Dhabi oilfields, United Arab Emirates, revealed the direct link of seismic wave attenuation to petrophysical properties of rocks. However, all those studies were based on zero offset VSP data, which limits the attenuation estimation at one location only. This is due to the difficulty of estimating attenuation from 3D seismic data, especially in carbonate rocks. To overcome this difficulty, we developed a workflow based on the centroid frequency shift method and Gabor transform which is optimized by using VSP data. The workflow was applied on 3D Ocean Bottom Cable seismic data. Distinct attenuation anomalies were observed in highly heterogeneous and saturated zones, such as the reservoirs and aquifers. Scattering shows significant contribution in attenuation anomalies, which is unusual in sandstones. This is due to the complex texture and heterogeneous nature of carbonate rocks. Furthermore, attenuation mechanisms such as frictional relative movement be... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gas-liquid interface shape, hydrodynamics model, liquid holdup, pressure drop, slug flow
Gas−liquid flow in a pipeline is a very common. Slug two-phase flow is dominated in the case of slightly upward flow (+0.25°) and considered to be the comprehensive flow configuration, and can be in close contact with all the other flow patterns. The models of different flow patterns can be unified. Precise prediction of the slug flow is crucial for proper design and operation. In this paper, we develop hydrodynamics unified modeling for gas−liquid two-phase slug flow, and the bubble and droplet entrainment is optimized. For the important parameters (wall and interfacial friction factors, slug translational velocity and average slug length), the correlations of these parameters are optimized. Furthermore, the related parameters for liquid droplet and gas bubble entrainment are given. Accounting for the gas−liquid interface shape, hydrodynamics models, i.e., the flat interface model (FIM) and the double interface model (DIM), of liquid film in the slug body are applied and compared with... March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy audits (EAs), Energy Efficiency, energy transition, industry, oil refining, refineries, specific energy consumption (SEC)
Petroleum products account for the 32.3% of worldwide primary energy. There are more than 100 oil refineries in Europe that directly employ 119,000 people with a turnover of EUR 600 billion and around 1.2% to the total value added in manufacturing. Therefore, the petroleum refining sector is very important in the European economy, and its decarbonization is crucial in the energy transition. Refineries present a high degree of complexity and integration, and the continuous increase of their energy efficiency is a key topic for the sector. In this work an analysis of the energy efficiency in ten Italian refineries based on mandatory energy audits and public data is presented. The primary (0.0963 ± 0.0341 toe/t), thermal (3421.71 ± 1316.84 MJ/t), and electrical (68.20 ± 19.34 kWh/t) specific energy consumptions have been evaluated. Some insights about the impact of refined products mix (mainly driven by production of diesel fuel) and Nelson Complexity Index in energy consumption are prese... [more]

Kyoungho Ahn, Hesham A. Rakha
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy consumption model, hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (HFCV), microscopic energy model
This paper presents a simple hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (HFCV) energy consumption model. Simple fuel/energy consumption models have been developed and employed to estimate the energy and environmental impacts of various transportation projects for internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs), battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). However, there are few published results on HFCV energy models that can be simply implemented in transportation applications. The proposed HFCV energy model computes instantaneous energy consumption utilizing instantaneous vehicle speed, acceleration, and roadway grade as input variables. The mode accurately estimates energy consumption, generating errors of 0.86% and 2.17% relative to laboratory data for the fuel cell estimation and the total energy estimation, respectively. Furthermore, this work validated the proposed model against independent data and found that the new model accurately estimated the energy consumption, prod... [more]
Could China Declare a “Coal Phase-Out”? An Evolutionary Game and Empirical Analysis Involving the Government, Enterprises, and the Public
Jingna Kou, Fengjun Sun, Wei Li, Jie Jin
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: China, coal phase-out, enterprises, local government, the public
There is a global move toward being “carbon neutral”. Reducing the use of coal to generate power has become an inevitable choice for many countries when transforming their energy structures. Many countries have proposed phasing out coal. China is a major energy producing and consuming country and intends to reach a carbon peak by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2060. China has repeatedly emphasized coal reduction, but has not explicitly proposed phasing out coal, due to the influence of local governments, coal-related enterprises, and the public. This paper explores whether China could declare a “coal phase-out”, and the possible reasons for doing so, by constructing an evolutionary game model with two correlations. MATLAB was used to simulate the model results to determine the effectiveness of the fractal results of the model, and the entropy method was used to calculate the development level of “coal phase-out” related indicators in China and Germany. The results show that: (1) The... [more]

Maria Dems, Krzysztof Komeza, Jacek Szulakowski, Witold Kubiak
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: core losses, efficiency, induction motor, inverter driving
Speed-controlled induction motors have the most significant potential for energy savings. The greatest problems with obtaining high efficiency occur in motors with a wide range of rotational speed regulation, as in the motors for driving industrial washing machines under consideration. While for the highest speeds, the dominant phenomenon is at field weakening. The problem is obtaining the optimal size of the magnetic flux for low rotation speed to prevent excessive saturation increasing current, and reduction of efficiency. This problem is usually solved by selecting the appropriate control for an already built machine. The authors propose a combination of activities when designing the motor structure with the selection of proper control, which allows for high efficiency. Since the drive does not require precise speed control or obtaining the required dynamics, it was possible to use an inexpensive control in an open loop, avoiding the cost of transmitters. Furthermore, the number of... [more]

Keywords: air source heat pump, integrated PVT-ASHP system, photovoltaic-thermal, small-scale building, zero energy building
The concept of zero energy buildings (ZEBs) has recently been actively introduced in the building sector, globally, to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. For the implementation of ZEBs, renewable energy systems, such as solar collectors, photovoltaic (PV) systems, and ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems, have been used. The system performance of solar collectors and PV systems are dependent on the weather conditions. A GSHP system requires a large area for boring machines and mud pump machines. Therefore, inhabitants of an existing small-scale buildings hesitate to introduce GSHP systems due to the difficulties in installation and limited construction area. This study proposes an integrate photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) and air source heat pump (ASHP) system for realizing ZEB in an existing small-scale building. In order to evaluate the applicability of the integrated PVT-ASHP system, a dynamic simulation model that combines the PVT-ASHP system model and the building load m... [more]

Keywords: Clarke’s transformation, Euler’s method, fault current detection, Park’s transformation, processing sample rate
This paper proposes a methodology to monitor the instantaneous value of the current and its derivative in the abc, αβ0, and dq0 reference frames to act in the detection of fault current in medium-voltage distribution systems. The method employed to calculate the derivative was Euler’s, with processing sampling rates of 10, 50, 100, and 200 μs. Using the MATLAB/Simulink platform, fault situations were analyzed on a real feeder of approximately 1.1132 km in length, fed by an 11.4 kV source, composed of 26 unbalanced loads and modeled as constant power. The simulation results show that the detection occurred in the different fault situations implemented in the feeder and that the detection speed is related to the value of the processing sampling rate (PSR) used. Considering all fault situations and regardless of the PSR value used, the total average detection time was 49 µs. Besides that, the joint action of the detection system with the Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC) limite... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: barriers, energy policy, European Union (EU), innovation management, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sustainable development, technology diffusion
A harmful impact of climate change and global warming has concerned various sectors of the international community. Numerous energy policies aiming at climate change mitigation have been implemented on a national and global scale. Renewable energy technologies (RETs) play a critical role in enhancing sustainable solutions that significantly limit greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Such innovative technologies can facilitate energy transition through providing, e.g., energy security, sustainable development, and effective usage of indigenous resources. However, the commercialization of RETs is extremely challenging. The barriers can be of a different nature, although this study focused on socioeconomic and regulatory issues. There is ample evidence that energy policies play a central role in supporting adoption of renewables. It is also claimed that RETs require the whole ecosystem to support their successful diffusion. In this study, we explored multifarious barriers for widespread RET di... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: conductor temperature, finite element simulation, high-voltage cable, RDTS
As a key state parameter of high-voltage cables, conductor temperature is an essential determinant of the current carrying capacity of cables, but in practice, this is difficult to measure directly during the operation of high-voltage cables. In this paper, the electromagnetic-thermal coupling analysis model of a 110 kV high-voltage cable is established using the finite element analysis software COMSOL. By analyzing the temperature distribution law of high-voltage cables under different load currents and ambient temperatures, the relationship between the change in the high-voltage cable surface temperature and the conductor temperature is deduced, which allows the monitoring of the high-voltage cable conductor temperature. Taking the 110 kV cable of the Yanzhong line in Shanxi Province as an example and using the electromagnetic-thermal coupling temperature field analysis method, the conductor temperature of the high-voltage cable can be measured using the data obtained from the cable... March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: ammonia combustion, flame extinction, Karlovitz number, LOC, Peclet number
Ammonia combustion is a promising energy source as a carbon free fuel without greenhouse gas emissions. However, since the auto-ignition temperature is 651 degrees Celsius and the range of flammability limit is not wide compared to other fuels, fundamental studies on ammonia fires have rarely been conducted so far. Therefore, this study aims to numerically estimate fire spread characteristics when ammonia fuel in a high-pressure state leaks to the outside, especially focusing on the flammability limit according to oxygen concentration. Three kinds of reaction mechanism for numerical analysis were adopted to compare the flame structure, flammability limit, and combustion characteristics. Plank-mean absorption coefficients of nitrogen species were taken for the radiation model, in addition to the optically thin model. The effect of radiation heat loss could be identified from the maximum flame temperature trend at a low strain rate. It was confirmed that the pyrolysis of ammonia in the p... [more]

Keywords: AdaBoost, bulk volume irreducible, clastic rocks, CMR, free fluid index, log generation, Machine Learning, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) logs, permeability, Western Australia
A nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) logging tool can provide important rock and fluid properties that are necessary for a reliable reservoir evaluation. Pore size distribution based on T2 relaxation time and resulting permeability are among those parameters that cannot be provided by conventional logging tools. For wells drilled before the 1990s and for many recent wells there is no NMR data available due to the tool availability and the logging cost, respectively. This study used a large database of combinable magnetic resonance (CMR) to assess the performance of several well-known machine learning (ML) methods to generate some of the NMR tool’s outputs for clastic rocks using typical well-logs as inputs. NMR tool’s outputs, such as clay bound water (CBW), irreducible pore fluid (known as bulk volume irreducible, BVI), producible fluid (known as the free fluid index, FFI), logarithmic mean of T2 relaxation time (T2LM), irreducible water saturation (Swirr), and permeability from Coates... Keywords: cascaded controller, deregulated hybrid power system, energy storage device (ESD), load frequency control (LFC), renewable energy sources (RES)
This work presents the power generation control of a two-area, hybrid, deregulated power system integrated with renewable energy sources (RES). The incorporation of appropriate system non-linearities and RES into the power system makes it complex, but more practical. The hybrid deregulated power system with RES is a complex nonlinear system that regularly exposes the major issue of system dynamic control due to insufficient damping under varying loading circumstances. The generation-demand equilibrium point of the power system varies following a contingency; hence, it becomes difficult to maintain the appropriate equilibrium point via traditional control approaches. To solve this problem, novel control approaches, along with rapid-acting energy storage devices (ESD), are immediate need for advanced power systems. As a result, various secondary controllers are inspected for improvements in system dynamics. A performance comparison infers the cascaded ID-PD controller as the optimum one.... [more]

Capture conditions for CO2 vary substantially between industrial point sources. Depending on CO2 fraction and pressure level, different capture technologies will be required for cost- and energy-efficient decarbonisation. For decarbonisation of shifted synthesis gas from coal gasification, several studies have identified low-temperature CO2 capture by condensation and phase separation as an energy- and cost-efficient option. In the present work, a process design is proposed for low-temperature CO2 capture from an Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plant. Steady-state simulations were carried out and the performance of the overall process, as well as major process components, were investigated. For the baseline capture unit layout, delivering high-pressure CO2 at 150 bar, the net specific power requirement was estimated to 273 kJe/kgCO2, and an 85% CO2 capture ratio was obtained. The impact of 12 different process parameters was studied in a sensitivity analysis, the re... [more]
