Statistical Investigation of Climate Change Effects on the Utilization of the Sediment Heat Energy
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: autoregression integrated moving average (ARIMA) modelling forecast, factor analysis, Pearson’s correlations, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sediment temperature
Suvilahti, a suburb of the city of Vaasa in western Finland, was the first area to use seabed sediment heat as the main source of heating for a high number of houses. Moreover, in the same area, a unique land uplift effect is ongoing. The aim of this paper is to solve the challenges and find opportunities caused by global warming by utilizing seabed sediment energy as a renewable heat source. Measurement data of water and air temperature were analyzed, and correlations were established for the sediment temperature data using Statistical Analysis System (SAS) Enterprise Guide 7.1. software. The analysis and provisional forecast based on the autoregression integrated moving average (ARIMA) model revealed that air and water temperatures show incremental increases through time, and that sediment temperature has positive correlations with water temperature with a 2-month lag. Therefore, sediment heat energy is also expected to increase in the future. Factor analysis validations show that th... [more]

Climate change and environmental pollution are considered to be among the main challenges faced by the modern world. The growth of environmental awareness and the adoption of a pro-environmental approach are considered to be the key megatrends with the greatest impact on the global economy in the upcoming years. According to Eurobarometer, EU citizens are particularly aware of the importance of protecting the environment. Although the negative environmental impact of European industry has improved over the past decades, EU citizens believe that there is further scope in terms of helping companies transition towards adopting more sustainable models. One of the factors contributing to the reduction in negative environmental impact is the participation of enterprises in voluntary programs such as the Environmental Management System (EMS), according to ISO 14001, or the Eco-management and Audit Scheme (EMAS). The whole population of Polish companies registered under the EMAS was included i... [more]

Strategies for the Mobilization and Deployment of Local Low-Value, Heterogeneous Biomass Resources for a Circular Bioeconomy
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: bioeconomy strategy, commoditization, market, policy, regional development, residues, technology
With the Bioeconomy Strategy, Europe aims to strengthen and boost biobased sectors. Therefore, investments in and markets of biobased value chains have to be unlocked and local bioeconomies across Europe have to be deployed. Compliance with environmental and social sustainability goals is on top of the agenda. The current biomass provision structures are unfit to take on the diversity of biomass residues and their respective supply chains and cannot ensure the sustainability of feedstock supply in an ecological, social and economical fashion. Therefore, we have to address the research question on feasible strategies for mobilizing and deploying local, low-value and heterogeneous biomass resources. We are building upon the work of the IEA Bioenergy Task40 scientists and their expertise on international bioenergy trade and the current provision of bioenergy and cluster mobilization measures into three assessment levels; the legislative framework, technological innovation and market creat... March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alternative energy system, borehole thermal storage, road thermal collector
The combination/integration of renewable energy and storage systems appears to have significant potential, achieving high-energy results with lower costs and emissions. One way to cover the thermal needs of a building is through solar energy and its seasonal storage in the ground. The SMARTEP project aims to create an experimental area that provides for the construction of a road solar thermal collector directly connected to a seasonal low-temperature geothermal storage with vertical boreholes. The storage can be connected to a ground-to-water heat pump for building acclimatization. This system will meet the requirements of visual impact and reduction of the occupied area. Nevertheless, several constraints related to the radiative properties of the surfaces and the lack of proper thermal insulation have to be addressed. The project includes the study of several configurations and suitable materials, the set-up of a dynamic simulation model and the construction of a small-scale road the... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Australian National Electricity Market (NEM), battery energy storage system (BESS), grid-forming converter, inverter-based resource (IBR), low-inertia system, synchronous condenser (SynCon), system strength, weak grid
Australia is one of the leading countries in energy transition, and its largest power system is intended to securely operate with up to 75% of variable renewable generation by 2025. High-inertia synchronous condensers, battery energy storage systems, and grid-forming converters are some of the technologies supporting this transformation while facilitating the secure operation of the grid. Synchronous condensers have enabled 2500 MW of solar and wind generation in the state of South Australia, reaching minimum operational demands of ≈100 MW. Grid-scale battery energy storage systems have demonstrated not only market benefits by cutting costs to consumers but also essential grid services during contingencies. Fast frequency response, synthetic inertia, and high fault currents are some of the grid-supporting capabilities provided by new developments that strengthen the grid while facilitating the integration of new renewable energy hubs. Evolutionary Game Analysis of Responding to the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM), China, evolutionary game, export companies, government
The European Union (EU) views the carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) as a measure to tackle carbon leakage, which will have a profound impact on non-EU countries’ exports. Policymakers are faced with the question of how to deal with the CBAM. In contrast to previous studies, we explore the effects of the CBAM on non-EU countries from a dynamic game perspective. This study analyzed the potential effects of the CBAM on China and found that the government and export companies are the two main stakeholders. We found that they can both choose whether to respond actively or passively. Based on their interactive relationship, we adopted an evolutionary game to model the nexus between the government and export companies. We analyzed the evolutionary stable state of each stakeholder and the whole game with the replicator dynamic equation system. To make the system evolve to the optimal state where the government reacts actively and export companies implement low-carbon production, we pro... [more]

Testing Smart Grid Scenarios with Small Volume Testbed and Flexible Power Inverter
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: microgrid (MG), microgrid emulator, power hardware in the loop (PHIL), power inverter, smart grid (SG)
The growing penetration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) due to the transition to future smart grid requires a huge number of power converters that participate in the power flow. Each of these devices needs the use of a complex control and communication system, thus a platform for testing real-life scenarios is necessary. Several test techniques have been so far proposed that are subject to a trade-off between cost, test coverage, and test fidelity. This paper presents an approach for testing microgrids, by developing an emulator, with emphasis on the micro-inverter unit and the possibility of flexible configuration for different grid topologies. In contrast to other approaches, our testbed is characterized by small volume and significantly scaled-down voltages for safety purposes. The examination is concentrated specifically on the inverter behavior. The test scenarios include behaviors in case of load changes, transition between grid-tied and islanded mode, connection and removal of... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide Capture, MEA, process simulation, Technoeconomic Analysis, waste heat
The performance of a plate heat exchanger (PHE), in comparison with the conventional shell and tube types, through a trade-off analysis of energy cost and capital cost resulting from different temperature approaches in the cross-exchanger of a solvent-based CO2 capture process, was evaluated. The aim was to examine the cost reduction and CO2 emission reduction potentials of the different heat exchangers. Each specific heat exchanger type was assumed for the cross-exchanger, the lean amine cooler and the cooler to cool the direct contact cooler’s circulation water. The study was conducted for flue gases from a natural-gas combined-cycle power plant and the Brevik cement plant in Norway. The standard and the lean vapour compression CO2 absorption configurations were used for the study. The PHE outperformed the fixed tube sheet shell and tube heat exchanger (FTS-STHX) and the other STHXs economically and in emissions reduction. The optimal minimum temperature approach for the PHE cases ba... [more]

Hysteresis Control in Pump-Controlled Systems—A Way to Reduce Mode-Switch Oscillations in Closed and Open Circuits
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: hysteresis control, mode-switch oscillations, pump-controlled systems
There is growing interest in using electric motors as prime movers in mobile hydraulic systems. This increases the interest in so-called pump-controlled systems, where each actuator has its own drive unit. Such architectures are primarily appealing in applications where energy efficiency is important and electric recuperation is relevant. An issue with pump-controlled systems is, however, mode-switch oscillations which can appear when the pressure levels in the system are close to the switching condition. In this paper, the mode-switching behavior of different generalized closed and open circuit configurations is investigated. The results show that the choice of where to sense the pressures has a huge impact on the behavior. They also show that, if the pressure sensing components are properly placed, closed and open circuits can perform very similarly, but that mode-switch oscillations still can occur in all circuits. Active hysteresis control is suggested as a solution and its effecti... [more]

A Study on the Impact of Distance-Based Value Loss on Transmission Network Power Flow Using Synthetic Networks
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: energy policies, optimal power production positioning, power system planning, synthetic network data
This paper presents a methodology for rapid generation of synthetic transmission networks and uses it to investigate how a transmission distance-based value loss affects the overall grid power flow. The networks are created with a graph theory-based method and compared to existing energy systems. The power production is located on these synthetic networks by solving a facility location optimization problem with variable distance-based value losses. Next, AC power flow is computed for a snapshot of each network using the Newton−Raphson method and the transmission grid power flow is analyzed. The presented method enables rapid analysis of several grid topologies and offers a way to compare the effects of production incentives and renewable energy policies in different network conditions.

Effect of Different Plenum-Chamber Coefficients on the Frosting of Air-Cooler
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: air-cooler, frost accumulation, plenum-chamber coefficient, velocity distribution
The performance of the air-cooler in refrigeration systems plays a key role in their energy efficiency. Here, the plenum-chamber coefficient was defined to investigate a possible way of enhancing the refrigeration coefficient that reflects the efficiency of the system. To investigate the influence of the plenum-chamber coefficient on the frosting and the cooling system of the air-cooler, three plenum-chamber coefficients (0.74, 0.97, 1.2) were studied under two different relative humidities. The temperature decreasing curve of the environmental chamber, the velocity distribution of the air-cooler, and the frost accumulation under and on the air-cooler were analyzed. We find that the homogeneity of the velocity distribution of the air-cooler and the frost accumulation increase with a growing plenum-chamber coefficient, while the frost accumulation on the fin will first increase and then decrease with the increase in the plenum-chamber coefficient. In general, frosting is more present wh... [more]

A Recent and Systematic Review on Water Extraction from the Atmosphere for Arid Zones
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Absorption, desiccant, dew collection, regeneration, solar energy
Water is essential for food security, industrial output, ecological sustainability, and a country’s socioeconomic progress. Water scarcity and environmental concerns have increased globally in recent years as a result of the ever-increasing population, rapid industrialization and urbanization, and poor water resource management. Even though there are sufficient water resources, their uneven circulation leads to shortages and the requirement for portable fresh water. More than two billion people live in water-stressed areas. Hence, the present study covers all of the research based on water extraction from atmospheric air, including theoretical and practical (different experimental methods) research. A comparison between different results is made. The calculated efficiency of the systems used to extract water from atmospheric air by simulating the governing equations is discussed. The effects of different limitations, which affect and enhance the collectors’ efficiency, are studied. Thi... [more]

Experimental and Numerical Analysis of the Impeller Backside Cavity in a Centrifugal Compressor for CAES
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: centrifugal compressor, coupling characteristics, impeller backside cavity, variable rotating speeds
Relying on a closed test rig of a high-power intercooling centrifugal compressor for compressed air energy storage (CAES), this study measured the static pressure and static temperature at different radii on the static wall of the impeller backside cavity (IBC) under variable rotating speeds. Simultaneously, the coupled computations of all mainstream domains with IBC or not were used for comparative analysis of the aerodynamic performances of the compressor and the internal flow field in IBC. The results show that IBC has a significant impact on coupling characteristics including pressure ratio, efficiency, torque, shaft power, and axial thrust of the centrifugal compressor. The gradients of radial static pressure and static temperature in IBC both increase with the decrease of mainstream flow or the increase of rotating speed, whose distributions are different under variable rotating speeds due to the change of the aerodynamic parameters of mainstream.

Reliability Updating of Offshore Structures Subjected to Marine Growth
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bio-colonization, Dynamic Bayesian Network, monopile, offshore, reliability updating, underwater inspection
Marine growth is a known problem for oceanic infrastructure and has been shown to negatively impact the reliability of bottom-fixed or floating offshore structures submitted to fatigue or extreme loading. Among other effects, it has been shown to change drag forces by increasing member diameters and modifying the roughness. Bio-colonization being highly random, the objective of this paper is to show how one-site inspection data increases reliability by decreasing uncertainties. This can be introduced in a reliability-based inspection framework for optimizing inspection and maintenance (here, cleaning). The modeling and computation are illustrated through the reliability analysis of a monopile in the European Atlantic area subjected to marine growth and according to the plastic collapse limit state. Based on surveys of structures in the North Sea, long-term stochastic modeling (space and time) of the marine growth thickness is first suggested. A Dynamic Bayesian Network is then develope... Fuzzy Adaptive Type II Controller for Two-Mass System
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptation process, fuzzy controller, membership functions, MRAS, Petri layer, type 2 fuzzy sets, type II fuzzy functions
This paper presents original concepts of control systems for an electrical drive with an elastic mechanical coupling between the motor and the driven mechanism. The synthesis procedure of the speed controller uses a proposed quality index (cost function) of system operation ensures the minimization of both tracking errors and torsional vibrations. Proper selection of the cost function focusses more on the reduction of torsional vibrations due to their negative influence on the drive’s mechanical coupling vitality. The omission of the plant identification of an adaptive fuzzy controller was proposed. Two types of fuzzy controllers were analyzed, namely with type I and type II fuzzy membership functions. The novelty of the presented approach is in the application of a Petri transition layer in a type II fuzzy controller which reduces the numerical complexity in case of a large number of complicated type II fuzzy sets. The presented simulation and experimental results prove that the best... [more]

Performance Comparison of Control Strategies for Plant-Wide Produced Water Treatment
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: deoiling, grey-box modeling, hydrocyclone, Model Predictive Control, oil and gas, robust control, separation
Offshore produced water treatment (PWT) accounts for cleaning the largest waste stream in the offshore oil and gas industry. If this separation process is not properly executed, large amounts of oil are often directly discharged into the ocean. This work extends two grey-box models of a three-phase gravity separator and a deoiling hydrocyclone, and combines them into a single plant-wide model for testing PWT control solutions in a typical process configuration. In simulations, three known control solutions—proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control, H∞ control, and model predictive control (MPC)—are compared on the combined model to evaluate the separation performance. The results of the simulations clearly show what performance metrics each controller excels at, such as valve wear, oil discharge, oil-in-water (OiW) concentration variance, and constraint violations. The work incentivizes future control to be based on operational policy, such as defining boundary constraints and wei... [more]

Measuring Technologies for CFB Solid Circulation Rate: A Review and Future Perspectives
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: accumulation method, circulating fluidized bed, pressure drop, solid circulation rate, velocity measurement
Solid circulation rate (Gs) represents the mass flux of circulating particles in circulating fluidized bed (CFB) systems and is a significant parameter for the design and operation of CFB reactors. Many measuring technologies for Gs have been proposed, though few of them can be applied in industrial units. This paper presents a comprehensive study on measuring technologies, and the results indicate that though the accumulation method is most widely applied, it is constrained by the disturbance of normal particle circulation. Some publications have proposed mathematic models based on pressure drop or other parameters to establish Gs measurement models; these necessitate the accurate modeling of complicated gas-solid flows in industrial devices. Methods based on certain measurement devices to specify parameters like velocity require device endurance in the industrial operation environment and stable local gas-solid flow. The Gs measuring technologies are strongly influenced by local gas-... [more]

Partial Discharge Pulse Segmentation Approach of Converter Transformers Based on Higher Order Cumulant
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: high-order-cumulant, impulse noise, partial discharge, pulse segmentation
As one of the most effective methods to detect the partial discharge (PD) of transformers, high frequency PD detection has been widely used. However, this method also has a bottleneck problem; the biggest problem is the mixed pulse interference under the fixed length sampling. Therefore, this paper focuses on the study of a new pulse segmentation technology, which can separate the partial discharge pulse from the sampling signal containing impulse noise so as to suppress the interference of pulse noise. Based on the characteristics of the high-order-cumulant variation at the rising edge of the pulse signal, a method for judging the starting and ending time of the pulse based on the high-order-cumulant is designed, which can accurately extract the partial discharge pulse from the original data. Simulation results show that the location accuracy of the proposed method can reach 94.67% without stationary noise. The field test shows that the extraction rate of the PD analog signal can reac... Subject: Environment
Keywords: biogas plant, cattle, cow, energetic calculation, GHG emission, manure, substrates
The aim of the study is to draw attention to the fact that reducing methane and nitrous oxide emissions as a result of traditional manure storage for several months in a pile is not only a non-ecological solution, but also unprofitable. A solution that combines both aspects—environmental and financial—is the use of manure as a substrate for a biogas plant, but immediately—directly after its removal from the dairy barn. As part of the case study, the energy and economic balance of a model farm with dairy farming for the scenario without biogas plant and with a biogas plant using manure as the main substrate in methane fermentation processes was also performed. Research data on the average emission of ammonia and nitrous oxide from 1 Mg of stored manure as well as the results of laboratory tests on the yield of biogas from dairy cows manure were obtained on the basis of samples taken from the farm being a case study. Design of a Bidirectional CL3C Full-Bridge Resonant Converter for Battery Energy Storage Systems
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bidirectional full-bridge converter, LLC resonant converters, zero current switching, zero-voltage switching
In this study, a bidirectional CL3C full-bridge resonant converter was developed using a bidirectional active bridge converter as the main framework to improve conventional LLC resonant converters. A resonant inductor and resonant capacitor were installed at the secondary side of the developed resonant converter. The bidirectional operation of this converter enables zero-voltage switching at the supply-side power switch and zero-current switching at the load side. The aforementioned phenomena enhance the overall circuit efficiency and enable the resonant tank voltage to be increased in the reverse mode, which cannot be achieved with conventional bidirectional LLC resonant converters. The electrical equipment isolation function provided by a transformer made electricity usage safer, and digital control technology was adopted to control electrical energy conversion and simulate bidirectional energy conversion. Screening of Surfactants for Flooding at High-Mineralization Conditions: Two Production Zones of Carbonate Reservoir
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbonate reservoir, enhanced oil recovery (EOR), high salinity, spontaneous imbibition, surfactant flooding
The selection of effective surfactants potentially can mobilize oil up to 50% of residuals in mature carbonate oilfields. Surfactants’ screening for such oilfields usually is complicated by the high salinity of water, high lipophilicity of the rock surface, and the heterogeneous structure. A consideration of features of the oilfield properties, as well as separate production zones, can increase the deep insight of surfactants’ influence and increase the effectiveness of surfactant flooding. This article is devoted to the screening of surfactants for two production zones (Bashkirian and Vereian) of the Ivinskoe carbonate oilfield with high water salinity and heterogeneity. The standard core study of both production zones revealed no significant differences in permeability and porosity. On the other hand, an X-ray study of core samples showed differences in their structure and the presence of microporosity in the Bashkirian stage.
