Effects of Future Climate Change and Adaptation Measures on Summer Comfort of Modern Homes across the Regions of the UK
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: climate change, comfort, dwelling, heatwave, houses, overheating, temperature, UK
The global climate is warming rapidly, with increasing frequency of severe events including heatwaves. Building insulation standards are improving to reduce emissions, but this can also lead to more overheating. Historically, UK house designers have not included adaptation measures to limit this. Most studies of the problem have had limited geographical or future climate scope. This study considers the comfort performance of a small modern house, in detached, semi-detached, and terrace (row) forms, but otherwise identical. Overheating is evaluated according to established criteria, including night-time bedroom hours over 26 °C. Simulations are carried out using median future weather years for current, 2030s, 2050s, and 2080s climates under medium- and high-emission scenarios for 14 regions of the UK. The results show a very large increase in overheating by the 2080s in all regions. With solar shading and natural ventilation, overheating is reduced considerably, maintaining comfort in m... [more]

A Comparative Assessment of Conventional and Artificial Neural Networks Methods for Electricity Outage Forecasting
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: artificial neural networks, exponential smoothing, multiple linear regression, predictive model, weather events
The reliability of the power supply depends on the reliability of the structure of the grid. Grid networks are exposed to varying weather events, which makes them prone to faults. There is a growing concern that climate change will lead to increasing numbers and severity of weather events, which will adversely affect grid reliability and electricity supply. Predictive models of electricity reliability have been used which utilize computational intelligence techniques. These techniques have not been adequately explored in forecasting problems related to electricity outages due to weather factors. A model for predicting electricity outages caused by weather events is presented in this study. This uses the back-propagation algorithm as related to the concept of artificial neural networks (ANNs). The performance of the ANN model is evaluated using real-life data sets from Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, and compared with some conventional models. These are the exponential smoothing (ES) an... Pyrolysis-Based Municipal Solid Waste Management in Poland—SWOT Analysis
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: management, municipal solid waste, pyrolysis, SWOT
Poland’s management of municipal waste, which amounts to over 13 million tons/year, is not efficient—about 60% of the waste is subjected to recovery processes, about 20% of all municipal waste is converted into energy, and almost 40% is landfilled. The authors of this article recognize the potential of pyrolysis as a method of the thermal processing of waste allowing the potential of the energy contained in the waste to be utilized. Pyrolysis is an economically attractive alternative to incineration, with a significantly lower environmental impact, allowing efficient waste management and the use of pyrolysis by-products in the energy sector (pyrolysis gas), or in the building materials sector (biochar). Despite so many advantages, this method is not employed in Poland. The aim of the paper is to indicate a recommended strategy for the application of pyrolysis in Poland as a method of the thermal processing of municipal solid waste. March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cost-optimal analysis, dynamic simulation, EN 15316, EPBD, nZEB, primary energy, solar hot water system
This paper presents the methodology for conducting a cost-optimal energy performance calculation of a solar hot water system, used for space heating and domestic hot water needs. The calculation is based on dynamic hourly methods, according to the new Energy Performance of Buildings’ (EPB) set of standards EN 15316:2017, and a revision of the standard EN 15316-5:2017 from the year 2021, dealing with storage-tank water temperature calculations. The paper provides proposals for modifications to these newly introduced standards, in order to overcome the observed ambiguities and shortcomings. The calculation of annual energy performance of a building was performed on an hourly basis over a year for the reference of an nZEB multi-apartment building, for a climate area of the city of Zagreb, taking into account water temperature change in the layers of the storage tank connected to solar collectors and hot water boilers. The cost-optimal solution was then determined by varying individual par... [more]

Partial Discharge Diagnostics: Data Cleaning and Feature Extraction
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: condition monitoring, denoising, feature extraction, Machine Learning, partial discharge, PRPD
Detection of partial discharge (PD) in switchgears requires extensive data collection and time-consuming analyses. Data from real live operational environments pose great challenges in the development of robust and efficient detection algorithms due to overlapping PDs and the strong presence of random white noise. This paper presents a novel approach using clustering for data cleaning and feature extraction of phase-resolved partial discharge (PRPD) plots derived from live operational data. A total of 452 PRPD 2D plots collected from distribution substations over a six-month period were used to test the proposed technique. The output of the clustering technique is evaluated on different types of machine learning classification techniques and the accuracy is compared using balanced accuracy score. The proposed technique extends the measurement abilities of a portable PD measurement tool for diagnostics of switchgear condition, helping utilities to quickly detect potential PD activities... Influence of Sweat on Joint and Sensor Reliability of E-Textiles
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: conductive stretchable textile ribbon, e-textiles, fully printed graphene-based humidity sensor, nonconductive adhesive compression bonding, soldering onto textile
This article addresses reliability under the sweat of interconnection techniques for the mounting surface mounted device (SMD) components and fully printed humidity sensors onto conductive stretchable textile ribbons. Samples underwent testing for the effect of ageing by artificial sweat on their electrical resistance using both alkaline and acidic artificial sweat. The best results in terms of electrical resistance change were obtained for samples soldered to the conductive fibers interwoven in the ribbon. However, this method can damage the ribbon due to the high temperature during soldering and significantly reduce the mechanical properties and flexibility of the ribbon, which can lead to a limited service life of samples. On the other hand, adhesive bonding is a very interesting alternative, where the above-mentioned properties are preserved, but there is a significant effect of sweat ageing on electrical resistance. The results of fully printed graphene-based humidity sensors show... [more]

Parametric Analysis Using CFD to Study the Impact of Geometric and Numerical Modeling on the Performance of a Small Scale Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, high fidelity simulations, horizontal axis wind turbine, multiple reference frame, sliding mesh interface, wind energy
The reliance on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations has drastically increased over time to evaluate the aerodynamic performance of small-scale wind turbines. With the rapid variability in customer demand, industrial requirements, economic constraints, and time limitations associated with the design and development of small-scale wind turbines, the trade-off between computational resources and the simulation’s numerical accuracy may vary significantly. In the context of wind turbine design and analysis, high fidelity simulation under full geometric and numerical complexity is more accurate but pose significant demands from a computational standpoint. There is a need to understand and quantify performance deterioration of high fidelity simulations under reduced geometric or numerical approximation on a single small scale turbine model. In the present work, the flow past a small-scale Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) was simulated under various geometric and numerical config... [more]

A Review of Predictive and Prescriptive Offshore Wind Farm Operation and Maintenance
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: failure prediction, failure prognosis, offshore wind, operation and maintenance planning, prescriptive maintenance
Offshore wind farms are a rapidly developing source of clean, low-carbon energy and as they continue to grow in scale and capacity, so does the requirement for their efficient and optimised operation and maintenance. Historically, approaches to maintenance have been purely reactive. However, there is a movement in offshore wind, and wider industry in general, towards more proactive, condition-based maintenance approaches which rely on operational data-driven decision making. This paper reviews the current efforts in proactive maintenance strategies, both predictive and prescriptive, of which the latter is an evolution of the former. Both use operational data to determine whether a turbine component will fail in order to provide sufficient warning to carry out necessary maintenance. Prescriptive strategies also provide optimised maintenance actions, incorporating predictions into a wider maintenance plan to address predicted failure modes. Quasi-Analytical Calculation of Frequency-Dependent Resistance of Rectangular Conductors Considering the Edge Effect
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ac loss, ac resistance, edge effect, finite element method (FEM), rectangular conductors, skin effect, white-box modeling
This paper presents an accurate quasi-analytical approximation of frequency-dependent ac resistance of single rectangular conductors. In this work, first, a two-dimensional analytical ac resistance of rectangular conductors is derived. Unlike circular conductors, where current density distributes evenly in each layer of the conductor’s cross-section, the edge effect is involved for rectangular conductors. Due to the edge effect, one cannot define an accurate boundary condition for solving the two-dimensional partial differential equation of magnetic field or current density of rectangular conductors. Hence, the calculated two-dimensional analytical current density result is not accurate and is modified and fitted on FEM simulation, taking the conductor’s thickness into account using the least-square problem to improve its accuracy. Unlike numerical approaches, the proposed method yields an easy-to-use formula applicable to industrial applications in different fields. Contrary to the on... [more]

Determination of the Most Interconnected Sections of Main Gas Pipelines Using the Maximum Clique Method
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: attacker–defender model, energy security, gas transmission network, maximum clique problem
This article is devoted to the definition of the most important combinations of objects in critical network infrastructures. This study was carried out using the example of the Russian gas transmission network. Since natural gas is widely used in the energy sector, the gas transmission network can be exposed to terrorist threats, and the actions of intruders can be directed at both gas fields and gas pipelines. A defender−attacker model was proposed to simulate attacks. In this model, the defender solves the maximum flow problem to satisfy the needs of gas consumers. By excluding gas pipelines, the attacker tries to minimize the maximum flow in the gas transmission network. Russian and European gas transmission networks are territorially very extensive and have a significant number of mutual intersections and redundant pipelines. Therefore, one of the approaches to inflicting maximum damage on the system is modeled as an attack on a clique. A clique in this study is several interconnec... [more]

Seismic Fragility Assessment of a Novel Suction Bucket Foundation for Offshore Wind Turbine under Scour Condition
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fragility curve, offshore wind turbine (OWT), scour, shallow muddy seabed, suction bucket (SB)
This study proposed a new suction bucket (SB) foundation model for offshore wind turbines (OWT) suitable for a shallow muddy seabed, using more than three single buckets through kinetic derivation. The performance of new optimal foundation was evaluated by its horizontal displacement capacity and compared with a conventional SB composed of three buckets. Under external loads such as earthquakes, wind, and the combination of the both, the stability of this novel SB foundation was verified. The seismic fragility curve was also evaluated at some scour depths. These results were compared with the response of a tripod suction bucket (TSB) foundation, which was also designed for a shallow muddy seabed. The results indicated that scour significantly changed the dynamic response of this novel SB foundation but it had a better bearing capacity than the TSB foundation, despite its smaller size and weight. The fragility of TSB is always higher than the developed foundation in the same environment... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: energy performance, exergy analysis, power and cold cogeneration, solar energy
In the present study, the evaluation of potential improvement of the overall efficiency of a common PV panel, valorizing the heat extracted by a heat exchanger that is integrated on its back side, either into work using an endoreversible Carnot engine or into cold by using an endoreversible tri-thermal machine consisting of a heat-driven refrigeration machine operating between three temperature sources and sink (such as a liquid/gas absorption machine), was carried out. A simplified thermodynamic analysis of the PV/thermal collector shows that there are two optimal operating temperatures T˜h and Th* of the panels, which maximize either the thermal exergy or the overall exergy of the PV panel, respectively. The cold produced by the endoreversible tri-thermal machine during the operating conditions of the PV/thermal collector at T˜h is higher with a coefficient of performance (COP) of 0.24 thanks to the higher heat recovery potential. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: angular asymmetry, four-wire converter control method, microgrid, reactive power compensation
The paper presents the reactive power compensation method that allows for reducing the active power flow even in the presence of angular asymmetry between voltage vectors of the utility grid. Reactive power compensation ensures the reduction of power transmission losses and therefore brings significant economic benefits to electricity consumers. The concept of the alternating current/direct current (AC/DC) converter for prosumer applications operating as a local reactive power compensator has been proposed. The system is driven by a multi-resonant algorithm, allowing for independent control of the reactive power in each phase. The proposed method was validated experimentally by using a prototype of the converter, programmable AC source, and grid impedance model. The method made it possible to cover the reactive power demand without unnecessary active power generation and thus to improve the efficiency of the analyzed prototype. March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electric load, long short-term memory network, nonlinear feature selection, Shapley value, short-term load forecasting, weight sharing
Accurate short-term load forecasting can ensure the safe operation of the grid. Decomposing load data into smooth components by decomposition algorithms is a common approach to address data volatility. However, each component of the decomposition must be modeled separately for prediction, which leads to overly complex models. To solve this problem, a VMD-WSLSTM load prediction model based on Shapley values is proposed in this paper. First, the Shapley value is used to select the optimal set of special features, and then the VMD decomposition method is used to decompose the original load into several smooth components. Finally, WSLSTM is used to predict each component. Unlike the traditional LSTM model, WSLSTM can simplify the prediction model and extract common features among the components by sharing the parameters among the components. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed model, several control groups were used for experiments. The results show that the proposed metho... [more]
