Performance Investigation Based on Vital Factors of Agricultural Feeder Supported by Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: agricultural feeder, low voltage distribution system, PV contribution, PV penetration, renewable energy system (RES), solar photovoltaic plant
Solar photovoltaic (SPV) installations are growing in the distribution network due to the continuously decreasing prices of solar photovoltaic panels. Installing the SPV Plant on the distribution feeder supplying to the agricultural pumps is a challenging task due to the varying agricultural load pattern of the Agricultural Feeder (AG Feeder). Supply of power and demand creates potential challenges in the low voltage (LV) distribution system. This paper presents a case study of a 2 MW SPV connected to an agricultural feeder in India. Performance analysis has been carried out using field measurement data. The key parameters such as PV Penetration and Capacity Utilization Factor (CUF) are calculated for analysis. Parameters such as Grid Dependency of the load and PV Contribution have been introduced in this paper, which relates to the SPV system behavior more aptly. It is recommended that the Time of Day (ToD) metering with the lowest cost during the solar generation hours will make agri... [more]

Assessment of Operational Performance for an Integrated ‘Power to Synthetic Natural Gas’ System
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electrolyzer, Hydrogen, hydrogen generator, SNG
This article presents a power to SNG (synthetic natural gas) system that converts hydrogen into SNG via a methanation process. In our analysis, detailed models for all the elements of the system are built. We assume a direct connection between a wind farm and a hydrogen generator. For the purposes of our calculations, we also assume that the hydrogen generator is powered by the renewable source over a nine-hour period per day (between 21:00 and 06:00), and this corresponds to the off-peak period in energy demand. In addition, a hydrogen tank was introduced to maximize the operating time of the methanation reactor. The cooperation between the main components of the system were simulated using Matlab software. The primary aim of this paper is to assess the influence of various parameters on the operation of the proposed system, and to optimize its yearly operation via a consideration of the most important constraints. The analyses also examine different nominal power values of renewables... [more]

Predictive Control-Based NADIR-Minimizing Algorithm for Solid-State Transformer
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: frequency stability, NADIR, predictive control, solid-state transformer
Solid-state transformers (SSTs) are becoming an important solution to control active distribution systems. Their significant flexibility in comparison with traditional magnetic transformers is essential to ensure power quality and protection coordination at the distribution level in scenarios of large penetration of distributed energy resources such as renewables, electric vehicles and energy storage. However, the power electronic interface of SSTs decouples the nature of the inertial and frequency responses of distribution loads, deteriorating the frequency stability, especially under the integration of large-scale solar and wind power plants. Despite the virtual inertia/voltage sensitivity-based algorithms that have been proposed, the frequency sensitivity of loads and the capability of guaranteeing optimal control, considering the operating restrictions, have been overlooked. To counteract this specific issue, this work proposes a predictive control-driven approach to provide SSTs w... [more]

Sliding-Mode-Based Current and Speed Sensors Fault Diagnosis for Five-Phase PMSM
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: 5P-PMSM, backstepping control, fault-tolerant control, sliding mode observer, speed and current sensor faults
The present paper deals with an active fault-tolerant speed tracking of a five-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor with currents and speed sensor failures. The active fault tolerant control scheme, integrating a sliding mode observer and backstepping controllers, is proposed to provide a continuous drive operation of the five-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor, even during more than one sensor fault occurrence. The sliding mode observer is designed to generate the residual signal necessary for the detection stage, whereas speed and current backstepping controllers handle the operation of the five-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor thanks to their ability to consider the nonlinearities of the system model in generating a control law that is robust enough in healthy and faulty cases. Furthermore, the FTC strategy uses the information received from the fault-tolerant switching block in terms of the measured and the observed currents and speed signals. To gain the maximum... [more]

Design Procedure Based on Maximum Efficiency for Wireless Power Transfer Battery Chargers with Lightweight Vehicle Assembly
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: battery charger, design procedure, inductive power transfer, wireless power transfer
This paper analyzes two different design procedures for a series-parallel compensated WPT battery charger, based on different definitions of the operating resonant frequency in the condition of maximum link efficiency. The behaviour of the voltage gain magnitude and the input impedance angle of the resulting WPT links is studied for different loads and coupling coefficients. The design algorithms are supported by analytical formulas derived from an exact circuit analysis of the WPT link, avoiding approximations as far as possible. To support the theoretical approach a case study is proposed, in which both design procedures are implemented considering specifications in line with the actual automotive standards. To conclude, a characterization of the efficiency in both cases is derived.

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric light scooter, passive fuel cell/battery hybrid system, proton exchange membrane fuel cell, urban driving cycles
Faced with key obstacles, such as the short driving range, long charging time, and limited volume allowance of battery-powered electric light scooters in Asian cities, the aim of this study is to present a passive fuel cell/battery hybrid system without DC-DC to ensure a compact volume and low cost. A novel topology structure of the passive fuel cell/battery power system for the electric light scooter is proposed, and the passive power system runs only on hydrogen. The power performance and efficiency of the passive power system are evaluated by a self-developed test bench before installation into the scooters. The results of this study reveal that the characteristics of stable power output, quick response, and the average efficiency are as high as 88% during the Shanghainese urban driving cycle and 89.5% during the Chinese standard driving cycle. The results present the possibility that this passive fuel cell/battery hybrid powertrain system without DC-DC is practical for commercial s... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: grey theory, multi-objective linear regression model (MLRM), multiple energy system, optimal operation
The manufacturing industry consumes electricity and natural gas to provide the power and heat required for manufacturing. Additionally, large amounts of electric energy and heat energy are used, and the electricity cost, amount of environmental pollution, and equipment maintenance cost are high. Thus, optimizing the management of equipment with new energy is important to satisfy the load demand from the system. This paper formulates the scheduling problem of these multiple energy systems as a multi-objective linear regression model (MLRM), and an energy management system is designed focusing on the economy and on greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, a variety of optimization objectives and constraints are proposed to make the energy management scheme more practical. Then, grey theory is combined with the common MLRM to accurately represent the uncertainty in the system and to make the model better reflect the actual situation. Comparison of Models of Single-Phase Diode Bridge Rectifiers for Their Use in Harmonic Studies with Many Devices
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: harmonic analysis, nonlinear systems, power electronics, power quality, power system harmonics
Harmonic modeling of low-voltage networks with many devices requires simple but accurate models. This paper investigates the advantages and drawbacks of such models to predict the current harmonics created by single-phase full-bridge rectifiers. An overview is given of the methods, limiting the focus to harmonic analysis. The error of each method, compared to an accurate numerical simulation model, is quantified in frequency and time domain considering realistic input scenarios, including background voltage distortion and different system impedances. The results of the comparison are used to discuss the applicability of the models depending on the harmonic studies scale and the required level of detail. It is concluded that all models have their applicability, but also limitations. From the simplest and fastest model, which does not require a numerical solution, to the more accurate one that allows discontinuous conduction mode to be included, the trade-off involves accuracy and comput... A Resampling Slack-Based Energy Efficiency Analysis: Application in the G20 Economies
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, G20, past-present model, resample super-SBM, triangular distribution
In order to have a sustainable economic and social development, it is important to balance economic growth and ecological environmental damage. In this article, we used the resampling model under the triangular distribution to evaluate energy efficiency, because the input/output value may have measurement errors, time lag factors, arbitrariness, and other problems, causing their own DMU to change. After these factors were taken into consideration, the resampled input/output was estimated because a super-SBM efficiency value was placed in the confidence interval. From the past-present data, for the estimated data change, the time weight was provided according to the Lucas series, and the super-SBM was time-weighted. We applied this model to a dataset of G20 economies from 2010 to 2014. To the best of our knowledge, very few studies have applied the DEA method with resampling to analyze energy efficiency. Thus, our study contributes to the methodologies for energy efficiency evaluation.... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: EPBT, IMPACT 2002+, LCA, multi-criteria analysis, primary energy, SHW system, solar thermal energy, SPBT, sustainable design
In the European Union, the building sector accounts for more than 40% of final energy consumption, contributing to the deterioration of the quality of the environment. Among the various solutions that aim to reduce the negative environmental impact caused by the operation of buildings, solar hot water systems (SHW) are popular. The choice of a SHW system is associated with the comfort of use and the access to low-cost energy. The design guidelines include the technical parameters for system operation such as materials, dimensions, sizing and operation temperatures. However, the legitimacy of choosing a particular solution and the available technical parameters are key issues. In the presented study, a multi-criteria analysis was proposed as a basis for the proper selection of system parameters, e.g., collector type, solar tank volume. A model of the SHW system was used to calculate the possible solutions, ensuring the same comfort of usage for several design options. The analyzed model... [more]

Application of Porous Materials for CO2 Reutilization: A Review
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: CO2 reutilization, electrochemical reduction, photochemical reduction, porous materials, solar thermochemical conversion
CO2 reutilization processes contribute to the mitigation of CO2 as a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) through reusing and converting it into economically valuable chemical products including methanol, dimethyl ether, and methane. Solar thermochemical conversion and photochemical and electrochemical CO2 reduction processes are emerging technologies in which solar energy is utilized to provide the energy required for the endothermic dissociation of CO2. Owing to the surface-dependent nature of these technologies, their performance is significantly reliant on the solid reactant/catalyst accessible surface area. Solid porous structures either entirely made from the catalyst or used as a support for coating the catalyst/solid reactants can increase the number of active reaction sites and, thus, the kinetics of CO2 reutilization reactions. This paper reviews the principles and application of porous materials for CO2 reutilization pathways in solar thermochemical, photochemical, and electrochemica... [more]

In this paper, the authors present an overview of biomass gasification modeling approaches with the aim of evaluating their effectiveness as a modeling tool for the design and optimization of polygeneration plants based on biomass gasification. In fact, the necessity to build plant operating maps for efficiency optimization requires a significant number of simulations, and non-stoichiometry equilibrium models may allow fast computations thanks to their relative simplicity. The main objective consists of the assessment of thermodynamic equilibrium models performance as a function of biomass type and composition to better understand in which conditions of practical interest such models can be applied with acceptable reliability. To this aim, the authors developed two equilibrium models using both a commercial software (referred as Aspen model) and a simulation tool implemented in a non-commercial script (referred as analytical model). Revisiting Environmental Kuznets Curve in Relation to Economic Development and Energy Carbon Emission Efficiency: Evidence from Suzhou, China
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: co-integration, CO2E, economic growth, energy consumption, Suzhou
This study empirically examines the effect of economic development on carbon emissions and revisits the environmental Kuznets curve in Suzhou, China. The study made use of the Gross Domestic Product Per Capita (GDPPC) of Suzhou, China as an indicator of economic development as it depicts the entire developmental ecosystem that indicates the level of production activities and total energy consumption. Bearing this in mind, the authors postulate that economic development directly increases carbon emissions through industrial and domestic consumptions. For this purpose, linear and non-linear approaches to cointegration are applied. The study finds the existence of an inverted U-shape relationship between economic development and carbon emission in the long run. Trade openness and industrial share are positively contributing to increasing carbon emissions. Energy use shows a positive sign but an insignificant association with carbon emissions. The study concludes that carbon emissions in S... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: distributed generation, fuzzy logic, renewable energy power generation, TFN
Studying and analyzing the challenges that the renewable energy sector faces can help evaluate the risks and improve the planning. This research is done by considering the challenges in the implementation of sustainable generation of electricity through RESs in India, based on factors, including technical, financial, involvement, support, and others. The triangular fuzzy number (TFN) method, based on fuzzy logic concept, is used to analyze the challenges in this study. In general, TFN comprises of three numbers, likewise Gaussian fuzzy numbers, trapezoidal fuzzy numbers also exist. The classified sets of numbers are denotations to decision-makers’ perspective or a choice towards the criterion preference. Although alternatives are many to design a fuzzy set depending on elements count, the TFNs are the ones considered as actual representations of a fuzzy number. On the other hand, cases the Gaussian or trapezoidal, are manifestations of fuzzy intervals. Another argument is that the memb... [more]
