Local Spatial Plans as Determinants of Household Investment in Renewable Energy: Case Studies from Selected Polish and European Communes
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: individual renewable energy systems, local spatial plan, Poland, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, urban planning
Although many factors affect the investment of individual households in renewable energy sources, we highlight one of them: the local spatial development plan. It is one of the planning tools for implementing development policies at the local level. Since it is on the basis of local spatial plans that investments are carried out on the ground, their role in the implementation of renewable energy sources is one of the most important. This article presents the results of a study of local spatial plans in terms of facilitating, on the one hand, and limiting, on the other hand, the implementation of various renewable energy investments. To a large extent, the focus was on examples of planning acts adopted in Polish communes, but they were compared with examples from other European countries. The authors focused on qualitative assessment, taking into account the regulations applicable to all investors, containing generally binding standards, which specify the development’s land use and deta... Model Reference Adaptive Control and Fuzzy Neural Network Synchronous Motion Compensator for Gantry Robots
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: fuzzy neural network, gantry robot, model reference adaptive controller, online parameter
A model reference adaptive control and fuzzy neural network (FNN) synchronous motion compensator for a gantry robot is presented in this paper. This paper proposes the development and application of gantry robots with MRAC and FNN online compensators. First, we propose a model reference adaptive controller (MRAC) under the cascade control method to make the reference model close to the real model and reduce tracking errors for the single axis. Then, a fuzzy neural network compensator for the gantry robot is proposed to compensate for the synchronous errors between the dual servo motors to improve precise movement. In addition, an online parameter training method is proposed to adjust the parameters of the FNN. Finally, the experimental results show that the proposed method improves the synchronous errors of the gantry robot and demonstrates the methodology in this paper. This study also successfully integrates the hardware and successfully verifies the proposed methods.

Collaborative Optimization of Electric Vehicles Based on MultiAgent Variant Roth−Erev Algorithm
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: electric vehicles (EVs), multiagent games, optimized dispatching, prospect theory, RE algorithm
With the implementation of the carbon neutral policy, the number of electric vehicles (EVs) is increasing. Thus, it is urgently needed to manage the charging and discharging behavior of EVs scientifically. In this paper, EVs are regarded as agents, and a multiagent cooperative optimization scheduling model based on Roth−Erev (RE) algorithm is proposed. The charging and discharging behaviors of EVs will influence each other. The charging and discharging strategy of one EV owner will affect the choice of others. Therefore, the RE algorithm is selected to obtain the optimal charging and discharging strategy of the EV group, with the utility function of the prospect theory proposed to describe EV owners’ different risk preferences. The utility function of the prospect theory has superior effectiveness in describing consumers’ utility. Finally, in the case of residential electricity, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified. Compared with that of random charging, this method red... [more]

Identification of Inter-Turn Short-Circuits in Induction Motor Stator Winding Using Simulated Annealing
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: Genetic Algorithm, induction motor, simulated annealing, stator winding, turn short-circuit
This paper presents a method of inter-turn short-circuit identification in induction motors during load current variations based on a hybrid analytic approach that combines the genetic algorithm and simulated annealing. With this approach, the essence of the method relies on determining the reference matrices and calculating the distance between the reference matric values and the test matrix. As a whole, it is a novel approach to the process of identifying faults in induction motors. Moreover, applying a discrete optimization algorithm to search for alternative solutions makes it possible to obtain the true minimal values of the matrices in the identification process. The effectiveness of the applied method in the monitoring and identification processes of the inter-turn short-circuit in the early stage of its creation was confirmed in tests carried out for several significant state variables describing physical magnitudes of the selected induction motor model. The need for identifica... [more]

Capture of Pollutants from Exhaust Gases by Low-Temperature Heating Surfaces
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: deep utilization, exhaust gas boiler, low-temperature heating surface, particulate matter, pollution, water-fuel emulsion
One of the most effective methods towards improving the environmental safety of combustion engines is the application of specially prepared water-fuel emulsions (WFE). The application of WFE makes it possible to reduce primary sulfur fuel consumption and reveals the possibility of capturing the pollutants from exhaust gases by applying condensing low-temperature heating surfaces (LTHS). In order to realize such a double effect, it is necessary to investigate the pollution processes on condensing LTHS of exhaust gas boilers (EGB), especially the process of low-temperature condensing a sulfuric acid vapor from exhaust gases to investigate the influence of condensing LTHS on the intensity of pollutants captured from the exhaust gases. The aim of this research is to assess the influence of the intensity of pollutants captured from exhaust gases by condensing LTHS in dependence of water content in WFE combustion. Investigations were carried out at a special experimental setup. The processin... [more]

Reliability Evaluation of Cyber−Physical Power Systems Considering Supply- and Demand-Side Uncertainties
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cascading failure, cyber–physical power systems, distributed generator, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, uncertainty
To reach effective monitoring and control, a physical power grid couples with a communication network and evolves into cyber−physical power systems (CPPS), but this cyber−physical interdependence may exacerbate failure on the physical/cyber side and may turn into a cascading failure. Furthermore, distributed generators (DGs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) introduced into CPPS add uncertainties to both the supply side and demand side of power energy. In this paper, we detail the model of CPPS and its coupling mechanism in operation and discuss the propagation mechanism of cascading failure within and across a physical power grid and a communication network. For uncertainties of power energy in the supply and demand sides, the generation and load of each day are divided into 24 time segments for modeling. In the case study, the well-being criteria and reliability indexes are employed to analyze the effect of DGs and cyber−physical interdependence on the reliability of CPPS... [more]

Turning Waste Cooking Oils into Biofuels—Valorization Technologies: A Review
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: conversion technologies, Energy, fuel, waste cooking oils
In search of a more sustainable society, humanity has been looking to reduce the environmental impacts caused by its various activities. The energy sector corresponds to one of the most impactful activities since most energies produced come from fossil fuels, such as oil and coal, which are finite resources. Moreover, their inherent processes to convert energy into electricity emit various pollutants, which are responsible for global warming, eutrophication, and acidification of soil and marine environments. Biofuels are one of the alternatives to fossil fuels, and the raw material used for their production includes vegetable oils, wood and agricultural waste, municipal waste, and waste cooking oils (WCOs). The conventional route for WCO valorization is the production of biodiesel, which, as all recovery technologies, presents advantages and disadvantages that must be explored from a technical and economic perspective. Despite its successful use in the production of biodiesel, it shoul... [more]

Efficiency of the Wireless Power Transfer System with Planar Coils in the Periodic and Aperiodic Systems
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: circuit modeling, numerical analysis, planar coils, wireless charging, wireless power transfer
This article presents the results of the proposed numerical and analytical analysis of the Wireless Power Transfer System (WPT). The system consists of a transmitting surface and a receiving surface, where each of them is composed of planar spiral coils. Two WPT systems were analysed (periodic and aperiodic) considering two types of coils (circular and square). In the aperiodic system, the adjacent coils were wound in the opposite direction. The influence of the type of coils, the winding direction, the number of turns, and the distance between the coils on the efficiency of the WPT system was compared. In periodic models, higher efficiency was obtained with circular rather than square coils. The results obtained with both proposed methods were consistent, which confirmed the correctness of the adopted assumptions. In aperiodic models, for a smaller radius of the coil, the efficiency of the system was higher in the square coil models than in the circular coil models. On the other hand,... [more]

A Method for the Segregation of Emulsion Inner Phase Droplets Using Imbibition Process in Porous Material
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: dispersion, droplet segregation, emulsion, fibrous material, imbibition, porous media
The process of forming an emulsion is an energy-consuming process. The smaller the internal phase droplets we want to produce and the closer the droplets are in size to each other (monodisperse), the more energy we need to put into the system. Generating energy carries a high economic cost, as well as a high environmental footprint. Considering the fact that dispersive systems are widely used in various fields of life, it is necessary to search for other, less-energy-intensive methods that will allow the creation of dispersive systems with adequate performance and minimal energy input. Therefore, an alternative way to obtain emulsions characterized by small droplet sizes was proposed by using an imbibition process in porous materials. By applying this technique, it was possible to obtain average droplet sizes at least half the size of the base emulsion while reducing the polydispersity by about 40%. Oil-in-water emulsions in which vegetable oil or kerosene is the oily phase were tested... [more]

Keywords: deep learning, electric vehicles, grid management, load recognition, low voltage grid
Due to the increasing penetration of renewable energies in lower voltage level, there is a need to develop new control strategies to stabilize the grid voltage. For this, an approach using deep learning to recognize electric loads in voltage profiles is presented. This is based on the idea to classify loads in the local grid environment of an inverter’s grid connection point to provide information for adaptive control strategies. The proposed concept uses power profiles to systematically generate training data. During hyper-parameter optimizations, multi-layer perceptron (MLP) and convolutional neural networks (CNN) are trained, validated, and evaluated to determine the best task configurations. The approach is demonstrated on the example recognition of two electric vehicles. Finally, the influence of the distance in a test grid from the transformer and the active load to the measurement point, respectively, onto the recognition accuracy is investigated. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: efficiency, generator design, optimization control, safety, wave power generation
Ocean wave power generation techniques (converting wave energy into electrical energy) have been in use for many years. The objective of this paper is to review the design, control, efficiency, and safety of ocean wave power generation systems. Several topics are discussed: the current situation of ocean wave power generation system tests in real ocean waves; the optimization design of linear generator for converting ocean wave energy into electrical energy; some optimization control methods to improve the operational efficiency of ocean wave power generation systems; and the current policy and financial support of ocean wave power generation in some countries. Due to the harsh ocean environment, safety is another factor that ocean wave power generation systems will face. Therefore, before the conclusion of this review, a damping coefficient optimization control method based on the domain partition is proposed to improve the efficiency and safety of ocean wave power generation systems.
