Operation Characteristics of Adjustable Field IPMSM Utilizing Magnetic Saturation
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: 3D magnetic path, adjustable field, IPMSM, magnetic saturation, permeability
This paper describes an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) based on a new adjustable field method. The proposed PM motor achieved magnetic field control utilizing magnetic saturation. In this paper, a back electromotive force (e.m.f.) measurement test and a load test using the prototype motor were conducted to clarify if the proposed motor had a wide operation range. In the back e.m.f. measurement test, it was confirmed that the proposed motor had a wide magnetic field controllable range of 51.7%. In addition, it was revealed, through the load test, that the proposed motor had a wide operating range, including both low-speed high-torque and high-speed low-torque driving conditions. Moreover, based on electromagnetic field analysis, the magnetic field control performance of the proposed adjustable field method was compared with the conventional field weakening control and other adjustable field methods. As a comparison result, it was verified that the proposed motor had... [more]

Design of Batteries for a Hybrid Propulsion System of a Training Aircraft
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery, emissions, hybrid propulsion, hybrid variables
In this article, we propose the parameters of a battery that would be suitable for the conceptual design of a small training aircraft. The mass design of the battery is based on the requirements for real training flights performed by students in pilot training. Such a serial hybrid propulsion aircraft could be used in our UNIZA aviation, training and education center for pilot training. Due to socio-political pressures in reducing emissions generated by vehicles, there has also been massive research in the aviation industry in the field of hybrid and electric aircraft propulsion. In the introduction, the article deals with the energy sources used in aircraft propulsion. In hybrid propulsion, a combination of aviation fuel and electricity is used as the energy source. The required total energy must choose a suitable combination of these two energy sources. The biggest drawback of batteries that can be used in hybrid systems is their low energy density. Low energy density means that larg... [more]

Inorganic Geochemistry of Crude Oils of Northern Eurasia after ICP-MS Data as Clear Evidence for Their Deep Origin
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: crude oil, geochemistry, ICP-MS method, microelement composition, North Eurasia, rare-earth elements
The emergence of mass-spectroscopy with inductively-coupled plasma (ICP-MS) made it possible to study the microelement composition of crude oil and its derivatives with the limit of detection (LOD) at the ppt level. We have studied the crudes from West Siberian (Shaimsky, Sredneobsky and Oktyabrsky regions) and Tatarstan Romashinskoye oilfields with the ICP-MS method to detect 50 rare, rare-earth, and other microelements. The elemental composition is reasonably comparable to their concentrations in ultrabasites whereas the contents of most of the elements are low to the limit. On the diagrams of rare-earth elements, one can see the prevalence of light lanthanides and positive europium anomaly. Increased content of platinoids was found in Tatar oils; in some cases, the concentration of ruthenium reaches 0.06 g/t. The study shows that studied crudes have a specific microelement composition. Based on the elevated contents of transit elements and platinoids, a conclusion was made about the... [more]

Achieving Net Zero Emissions in Italy by 2050: Challenges and Opportunities
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: 2050 carbon neutrality, climate change, energy planning, energy scenarios, energy transition, GHG mitigation, I-LTS, Paris Agreement, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, TIMES model
This paper contributes to the climate policy discussion by focusing on the challenges and opportunities of reaching net zero emissions by 2050 in Italy. To support Italian energy planning, we developed energy roadmaps towards national climate neutrality, consistent with the Paris Agreement objectives and the IPCC goal of limiting the increase in global surface temperature to 1.5 °C. Starting from the Italian framework, these scenarios identify the correlations among the main pillars for the change of the energy paradigm towards net emissions by 2050. The energy scenarios were developed using TIMES-RSE, a partial equilibrium and technology-rich optimization model of the entire Italian energy system. Subsequently, an in-depth analysis was developed with the sMTISIM, a long-term simulator of power system and electricity markets. The results show that, to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, the Italian energy system will have to experience profound transformations on multiple and strongly... [more]

Renewable Energy Sources as the Future of the Energy Sector and Climate in Poland—Truth or Myth in the Opinion of the Society
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: climate change, energy conservation, energy sector, public opinion, renewable energy sources
The electricity sector in the 21st century should be associated with renewable energy sources (RES), which the majority of society currently equates with solar photovoltaics, wind power, and hydroelectricity, with this energy being used mainly in households. Households consume only 20% of energy, with the remainder used in various sectors of the national economy. In these sectors, the possibilities of using renewable energy sources should be sought. Many experts express the opinion that myths about renewable energy sources exist only “in our minds and opinions, that we formed years ago”, mainly under pressure from the decreasing number of supporters of conventional energy sources. Currently, we observe much greater possibilities of using renewable energy sources globally, and all forecasts suggest that—by 2050—the economy, transport, and industry may become almost emission-free and rely on RES. Of course, we cannot present renewable energy sources only in terms of superlatives, because... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: converter, photovoltaic, push-pull converter, resonant voltage doubler rectifier, stand-alone, step-up
This paper proposes a step-up DC−DC converter for a power electronic circuit for standalone photovoltaic systems with battery energy storages. The proposed DC−DC converter effectively converts low DC battery voltage into high DC-link voltage. It operates with soft-switching characteristics, which can reduce switching power losses. The proposed converter operates without output voltage feedback, which simplifies its control design. The operation principle of the proposed converter was described, along with the overall system configuration. The experimental results were discussed for the 500-W prototype system using a 12-V lead-acid battery.

Forecast of Economic Tight Oil and Gas Production in Permian Basin
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: economics, EUR, geology, infill, shale, technology, unconventional, well completion
We adopt a physics-guided, data-driven method to predict the most likely future production from the largest tight oil and gas deposits in North America, the Permian Basin. We first divide the existing 53,708 horizontal hydrofractured wells into 36 spatiotemporal well cohorts based on different reservoir qualities and completion date intervals. For each cohort, we fit the Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) statistics to the annual production and calculate the means to construct historical well prototypes. Using the physical scaling method, we extrapolate these well prototypes for several more decades. Our hybrid, physico-statistical prototypes are robust enough to history-match the entire production of the Permian mudstone formations. Next, we calculate the infill potential of each sub-region of the Permian and schedule the likely future drilling programs. To evaluate the profitability of each infill scenario, we conduct a robust economic analysis. We estimate that the Permian tight reserv... [more]

Subject: System Identification
Keywords: cogeneration projects, management project risk, project management, risk factors
The purpose of the article is to define the risk factors in cogeneration projects and to demonstrate that a lack of sufficient identification of risks in different phases affects project implementation. A theoretical study is conducted, which aims to identify risk factors in cogeneration projects, based on case studies of such projects in Poland. The study offers a view at CHP (combined heat and power) projects as extremely dependent on the external environment of the organisation. These projects are subject to many external regulations due to their environmental impact and dynamically changing technical aspects. The biggest technical errors occur at the planning and construction stages. The biggest economic and financial risks occur at the execution stage after 2% and 3% of additional design costs occur, respectively. The authors estimated the risks at different stages of the project and concluded that the total cost of failure in correct identification of the risks at the planning st... [more]

Time-Averaged Wind Turbine Wake Flow Field Prediction Using Autoencoder Convolutional Neural Networks
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: convolutional neural network, large-eddy simulation, wake flow predictions, wind turbine
A convolutional neural network (CNN) autoencoder model has been developed to generate 3D realizations of time-averaged velocity in the wake of the wind turbines at the Sandia National Laboratories Scaled Wind Farm Technology (SWiFT) facility. Large-eddy simulations (LES) of the SWiFT site are conducted using an actuator surface model to simulate the turbine structures to produce training and validation datasets of the CNN. The simulations are validated using the SpinnerLidar measurements of turbine wakes at the SWiFT site and the instantaneous and time-averaged velocity fields from the training LES are used to train the CNN. The trained CNN is then applied to predict 3D realizations of time-averaged velocity in the wake of the SWiFT turbines under flow conditions different than those for which the CNN was trained. LES results for the validation cases are used to evaluate the performance of the CNN predictions. Comparing the validation LES results and CNN predictions, we show that the d... [more]

Hydrothermal Unit-Commitment Problem of a Large-Scale System with Representation of Forbidden Zones
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: forbidden zone, hydrothermal unit commitment, power system modelling
As we move towards electrical networks with a growing presence of renewable generation, the representation of the electrical components becomes more important. In hydro-dominated power systems, modelling the forbidden zones of hydro plants becomes increasingly challenging as the number of plants increases. Such zones are ranges of generation that either should be avoided or are altogether unreachable. However, because representing the forbidden zones introduces a substantial computational burden, hydrothermal unit-commitment problems (HTUC) for large systems are usually formulated ignoring the forbidden zones. Nonetheless, this simplification may demand adjustments to the solution of the HTUC, because the generation of the hydro stations may fall in forbidden zones. In practice, the adjustments are usually performed based on the experience of system operators and, then, can be far from an optimal correction. In this paper, we study the impact of explicitly representing the hydro-genera... [more]

What Makes the Difference Is the Size and Proximity to the Centre: A Research Approach and Results of Territorial Cohesion Assessment at the Local Level
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: cohesion index, cohesion policy, EU, non-parametric techniques, Poland, rural areas, territorial cohesion
The aim of this paper is to assess the territorial cohesion of municipalities (gminas) in Poland using quantitative data and non-parametric modelling techniques. The full population of 2174 Polish municipalities divided into rural and urban-rural municipalities was examined. The time interval of the study, i.e., 2005−2017, allows us to capture the changes stimulated by the implementation of the cohesion policy, i.e., the programme of socio-economic transformation in Poland, implemented in the programming period 2007−2013. Using the DEA approach, a general decline in the cohesion index value over time was recorded in the period of analysis. The results of estimating autocorrelation measures indicate a progressive tendency to build spatial clusters, where the size of the local administrative unit (municipality), measured by the population potential and spatial location of the municipality significantly affect the cohesion level. It was also found that there are limits of positive influen... [more]

The Effect of Dynamic Cold Storage Packed Bed on Liquid Air Energy Storage in an Experiment Scale
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cold storage, dynamic characteristic, liquid air energy storage, packed bed
Liquid air energy storage (LAES) is one of the most promising large-scale energy storage technologies for the decarburization of networks. When electricity is needed, the liquid air is utilized to generate electricity through expansion, while the cold energy from liquid air evaporation is stored and recovered in the air liquefaction process. The packed bed filled with rocks/pebbles for cold storage is more suitable for real-world application in the near future compared to the fluids for cold storage. A standalone LAES system with packed bed energy storage is proposed in our previous work. However, the utilization of pressurized air for heat transfer fluid in the cold storage packed bed (CSPB) is confusing, and the effect of the CSPB on the system level should be further discussed. To address these issues, the dynamic performance of the CSPB is analyzed with the physical properties of the selected cold storage materials characterized. The system simulation is conducted in an experiment... [more]

A Sensor Data Processing Algorithm for Wind Turbine Hydraulic Pitch System Diagnosis
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: diagnosis, failure mode, hydraulic pitch system, wind turbine
Modern wind turbines depend on their blade pitch systems for start-ups, shutdowns, and power control. Pitch system failures have, therefore, a considerable impact on their operation and integrity. Hydraulic pitch systems are very common, due to their flexibility, maintainability, and cost; hence, the relevance of diagnostic algorithms specifically targeted at them. We propose one such algorithm based on sensor data available to the vast majority of turbine controllers, which we process to fit a model of the hydraulic pitch system to obtain significant indicators of the presence of the critical failure modes. This algorithm differs from state-of-the-art, model-based algorithms in that it does not numerically time-integrate the model equations in parallel with the physical turbine, which is demanding in terms of in situ computation (or, alternatively, data transmission) and is highly susceptible to drift. Our algorithm requires only a modest amount of local sensor data processing, which... [more]

Energy Recovering Using Regenerative Braking in Diesel−Electric Passenger Trains: Economical and Technical Analysis of Fuel Savings and GHG Emission Reductions
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: diesel–electric train, energy saving, GHG emission reduction, return on investment
Rail transport, specifically diesel−electric trains, faces fundamental challenges in reducing fuel consumption to improve financial performance and reduce GHG emissions. One solution to improve energy efficiency is the electric brake regenerative technique. This technique was first applied on electric trains several years ago, but it is still considered to improve diesel−electric trains efficiency. Numerous parameters influence the detailed estimation of brake regenerative technique performance, which makes this process particularly difficult. This paper proposes a simplified energetic approach for a diesel−electric train with different storage systems to assess these performances. The feasibility and profitability of using a brake regenerative system depend on the quantity of energy that can be recuperated and stored during the train’s full and partial stop. Based on a simplified energetic calculation and cost estimation, we present a comprehensive and realistic calculation to evaluat... [more]

Thermal Management of Bone Drilling Based on Rotating Heat Pipe
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: bone drilling, bone temperature, rotating heat pipe, thermal management, thermal osteonecrosis
Bone drilling is a common surgical operation, which often causes an increase in bone temperature. A temperature above 47 °C for 60 s is the critical temperature that can be allowed in bone drilling because of thermal bone osteonecrosis. Therefore, thermal management in bone drilling by a rotating heat pipe was proposed in this study. A new rotating heat pipe drill was designed, and its heat transfer mechanism and thermal management performance was investigated at occasions with different input heat flux and rotational speed. Results show that boiling and convection heat transfer occurred in the evaporator and film condensation appears in the condenser. The thermal resistance decreases with the increase of the rotational speed at the range from 1200 to 2000 rpm and it decreases as the input heat flux rises from 5000 to 10,000 W/m2 and increases at 20,000 W/m2. The temperature on the drill tip was found to be 46.9 °C with an input heat flux of 8000 W/m2 and a rotational speed of 2000 rpm... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gasification, kinetics, pyrolysis, waste tires
The aim of the study is to assess the influence of the atmosphere during pyrolysis on the course of CO2 gasification of a tire waste char. Two approaches were used: the pyrolysis step was carried out in an inert atmosphere of argon (I) or in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide (II). The examinations were carried out in non-isothermal conditions using a Rubotherm DynTherm thermobalance in the temperature range of 20−1100 °C and three heating rates: 5, 10 and 15 K/min. Based on the results of the gasification examinations, the TG (Thermogravimetry) and DTG (Derivative Thermogravimetry) curves were developed and the kinetic parameters were calculated using the KAS (Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose) and FWO (Flynn-Wall-Ozawa) methods. Additionally, the CO2 gasification of tire chars reaction order (n), was evaluated, and the kinetic parameters were calculated with the use of Coats and Redfern method. Tire waste char obtained in an argon atmosphere was characterized by lower reactivity, which was refle... [more]

Insight into Relationship between Thermal Dissolution of Low-Rank Coals and Their Subsequent Oxidative Depolymerization
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: benzene carboxylic acids, low-rank coals, oxidation by NaOCl, thermal dissolution
Oxidative depolymerization of low-rank coals is promising for obtaining benzene carboxylic acids (BCAs). However, it is hindered by the low yield of BCAs along with a large number of alphatic acids. Thermal dissolution could modify the physico-chemical structural features of low-rank coals, which is expected to improve the oxidation of LRCs. In this paper, lignite and subbituminous coal were firstly subjected to thermal dissolution with cyclohexane at 250 °C for 2 h. Then, the raw coal and the corresponding thermal insoluble portion (TIP) were oxidized by NaOCl under the same conditions. The residual yields of TIPs oxidation were both lower than those of raw coals oxidation, indicating that TIPs were more easily oxidized than the raw coals. The yield of BCAs obtained by TIPs oxidation was above 19% higher than that from the oxidation of raw coals. Meanwhile, the selectivity of BCAs was improved in the resulting oxidation products from TIPs compared with that from the raw coals. The rel... [more]

Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: multi-criteria evaluation, sorting line, system evaluation, waste management, waste sorting
One of the recent problems on waste sorting systems is their performance evaluation for proper decision making and management. For this purpose, multi-criteria methods can be used to evaluate the sorting system from both operational and financial perspectives. According to a recent literature review, there are no solutions for evaluating waste sorting systems that take into account: sorting point utilisation, sorting efficiency, waste stream irregularity, and technical system availability. In addition, the problem of data uncertainty and the need to use expert judgements indicate the need for the implementation of methods adjusted to the qualitative and quantitative assessment, such as the fuzzy approach. Following this, in order to overcome the presented limitations, the authors introduced the new assessment method for waste sorting systems based on multi-criteria model implementation and fuzzy theory use. Keywords: assembly line, decision making, Industry 4.0, information flow
Last year’s developments are characterized by a dramatic drop in customer demand leading to stiff competition and more challenges that each enterprise needs to cope with in a globalized market. Production in low-mix/high-volume batches is replaced with low-volume/high-variety production, which demands excessive information flow throughout production facilities. To cope with the excessive information flow, this production paradigm requires the integration of new advanced technology within production that enables the transformation of production towards smart production, i.e., towards Industry 4.0. The procedure that helps the decision-makers to select the most appropriate I4.0 technology to integrate within the current assembly line considering the expected outcomes of KPIs are not significantly been the subject of the research in the literature. It has become a basic requirement for wind turbines (WTs) to provide frequency regulation and inertia support. The influence of WTs on the low-frequency oscillation (LFO) of the system will change after adopting inertia control methods. This paper intends to investigate and compare in detail the IC effects on LFO characteristics in two systems with different structures. First, the mechanism of inertia control of doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)-based WTs is analyzed. Then, the small-signal analysis method and modal analysis method are used to study the influence of the inertia control on the LFO characteristics based on the two-machine infinite-bus system and the four-machine two-area system, respectively. The difference in impact rules of IC on LFO is compared in detail. Finally, considering that the inertia control might worsen the LFO in some systems, an improved inertia control strategy of DFIG-based WTs is proposed to suppress the LFO. Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: electric vehicle, Monte Carlo, Particle Swarm Optimization, smart scheduling
Charge scheduling can mitigate against issues arising from excessive electric vehicle (EV) charging loads and is commonly implemented using time-of-use pricing. A charge scheduling strategy to suit vertically structured power systems without relying on time-of-use pricing has not yet been reported, despite being needed by industry. Therefore, a novel charge scheduling strategy to meet this need is proposed in this paper. Key aspects include the provision of a decision-making framework that accommodates for the considerations of transmission and distribution network operators, and the allowance for dynamically changing charging loads through timely forecast updates with reduced communication requirements. A case study based on the Indonesian Java-Bali power system is undertaken to demonstrate the strategy’s effectiveness. Different and realistic EV uptake scenarios are considered, using probabilistic modeling, survey work, and a Monte Carlo modeling approach. Even under slow EV charging... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery energy storage, computer modelling, energy storage system design, lithium-ion batteries, maximum operating point tracking, photovoltaic charger
The use of solar panels in low-power applications is an increasingly developing topic. Various methods are currently used to obtain the highest possible solar panel power generation efficiency. The methods of determining the maximum power point (MPP) and its tracking are under constant development, resulting in the creation of new algorithms to accelerate the operational efficiency while maintaining good parameters. Typically, these methods are only used in high-power photovoltaic installations. Due to the problems resulting from the adjustment to MPP working conditions for low-power solar panels used to charge a Li-Ion battery, an attempt was made to check the feasibility of operating control based on a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) method and a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm like the one used in high-power solar systems also for low-power systems.
