Comparison of How Graphite and Shungite Affect Thermal, Mechanical, and Dielectric Properties of Dielectric Elastomer-Based Composites
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: composites, dielectric constant, dielectric elastomer, graphite, shungite
The aim of this work involved comparing the effect graphite and shungite have on the properties of dielectric elastomer-based materials. For this reason, dielectric elastomer−Sylgard (S) was filled with 1, 3, 5, 10, and 15 wt.% of graphite (G) and shungite (Sh). The structure of the obtained materials was studied by means of scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The influence of the introduced additives on the thermal stability of the obtained composites was evaluated using thermogravimetry. Moreover, the mechanical properties and the dielectric constant of the elastomer with an addition of graphite and shungite were determined. Obtained results allowed us to establish that the presence of graphite as well as shungite significantly influences mechanical as well as dielectric properties. Additionally, the optimum mass of additives, allowing to increase the dielectric constant without the significant decrease of strain at break, was indicated. In the case of materials... [more]

Effects of High Buoyancy Parameter on Flow and Heat Transfer of Two-Pass Smooth/Ribbed Channels
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: buoyancy parameter, RANS, rotating, smooth/ribbed channels, SST k-ω turbulence model
In order to deepen the understanding of rotating effects on internal cooling, the flow and heat transfer characteristics of 2-pass rotating rectangular smooth/ribbed channels are investigated by Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulation. Three rotating numbers (Ro = 0.10, 0.25, and 0.40) are simulated, and the maximum buoyancy parameter (Bo) reaches 5.0. The results show that the rotating buoyancy has significant effects on the flow and heat transfer under high Bo conditions. When Bo > 1.0, rotating buoyancy inducts flow separation near the leading edge (LE) in the first passage, while the air flow in the second passage shows a double-peak profile. With increased Bo, the heat transfer in the first passage is greatly increased, and the maximum growth rate occurs at Bo = 0.6~1.0. However, the heat transfer in the second passage has no obvious changes due to a strong turn effect. In the ribbed channel, rotating effects are much weaker than those in the smooth channel. Fouling Mitigation of Ion Exchange Membranes in Energy Conversion Devices
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Energy Conversion, fouling, fouling mitigation, ion exchange membrane
In this study, three different environmentally friendly fouling mitigation technologies are suggested and are investigated in reverse electrodialysis (RED) to develop the most appropriate fouling mitigation technology for RED: applying direct current, flowing a solution with high salt concentration, and periodically switching river and seawater streams in RED. The quantitative level of anion exchange membrane fouling mitigation is evaluated in terms of the power density and the amount of power generation of RED. Applying a direct current electric field with higher voltage than 8 V was not allowed for fouling mitigation in the two-cell-pair bench RED stack due to decomposition of the redox couple. In comparison of the RED operations with two different fouling mitigation methods using firstly 40-min power generation during in-operation and 40-min fouling mitigation stage during out-of-operation as a cycle for 80 min and secondly 80-min forward power generation and 80-min backward power g... Excited States Calculations of MoS2@ZnO and WS2@ZnO Two-Dimensional Nanocomposites for Water-Splitting Applications
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: density functional theory, excited state calculations, MoS2@ZnO and WS2@ZnO nanostructures, photoabsorption, photocatalyst
Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) MoS2 and WS2 monolayers (MLs) deposited atop of crystalline zinc oxide (ZnO) and graphene-like ZnO (g-ZnO) substrates have been investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT) using PBE and GLLBSC exchange-correlation functionals. In this work, the electronic structure and optical properties of studied hybrid nanomaterials are described in view of the influence of ZnO substrates thickness on the MoS2@ZnO and WS2@ZnO two-dimensional (2D) nanocomposites. The thicker ZnO substrate not only triggers the decrease of the imaginary part of dielectric function relatively to more thinner g-ZnO but also results in the less accumulated charge density in the vicinity of the Mo and W atoms at the conduction band minimum. Based on the results of our calculations, we predict that MoS2 and WS2 monolayers placed at g-ZnO substrate yield essential enhancement of the photoabsorption in the visible region of solar spectra and, thus, can be used as a promising... Numerical Investigation of the Influence of Precooling on the Thermal Performance of a Borehole Heat Exchanger
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: borehole heat exchanger, precooling time, thermal radius
Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs), a high-efficiency and energy-saving air-conditioning technology that utilizes shallow geothermal resources for both heating and cooling, are a vital green energy system for residential and commercial buildings. Improving the performance of such a system was the focus of the current research. As soil temperature and thermal radius are two important aspects that affect the performance of ground source heat pump systems, we conducted a new numerical simulation to capture the changes in sensitive factors and propose the optimized paths. The numerical simulation analyzed the thermal characteristics of a borefield under different pre-cooling times and soil types. The results indicated the following: (1) The rate of the ground temperature change with pre-cooling during the discharging period had a faster rise than in the case without pre-cooling. The longer the precooling time was, the smaller the thermal radius became. In particular, when the precooling time... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: extreme learning machine, kernel density estimation, load forecasting, load series, mode decomposition
Short-term load forecasting is an important part of load forecasting, which is of great significance to the optimal power flow and power supply guarantee of the power system. In this paper, we proposed the load series reconstruction method combined improved complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (ICEEMDAN) with sample entropy (SE). The load series is decomposed by ICEEMDAN and is reconstructed into a trend component, periodic component, and random component by comparing with the sample entropy of the original series. Extreme learning machine optimized by salp swarm algorithm (SSA-ELM) is used to predict respectively, and the final prediction value is obtained by superposition of the prediction results of the three components. Then, the prediction error of the training set is divided into four load intervals according to the predicted value, and the kernel probability density is estimated to obtain the error distribution of the training set. Space Redevelopment of Old Landfill Located in the Zone between Urban and Protected Areas: Case Study
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: circular economy, closed landfill restoration, protected area, renewable sources, sustainable city, urban management
Landfills are elements of the waste management system, without possibility of further reclaiming, according to the requirements of a closed-loop economy, but with the possibility of transforming the area into other functions. The research combined monitoring of plant species, suggesting the composition of vegetation cover for pro-ecological management, analysis of functional and infrastructural incorporation of the landfill in the surrounding landscape, and proposals for reclamation and social application. An assessment of geotechnical safety was also made. Modernization of the landfill suggests that the pressure placed on other untouched locations should decrease. The designed space allows reintroducing socio-ecological life into this degraded area. Taking advantage of the character of the area, including variable development and significant landscape potential on the outskirts of a large city in the vicinity of protected areas, there is the possibility of creating new spatial quality... Subject: Process Design
Keywords: COP, fin heat sink, performance improvement, thermoelectric cooling
The thermoelectric refrigeration system is an application of the Peltier effect, and good refrigeration performance is dependent on effective heat dissipation performance. To enhance the cooling performance of the thermoelectric system, this paper designs a new type of finned heat sink, which does not change the overall size of the thermoelectric system. The performance of the refrigeration system under the new fin is tested by experiments under various conditions. During the experiment, the cooling wind speed, the temperature of the hot and cold side of the TEC, the power consumption of the fan, and other parameters were directly recorded through the measuring instrument. The results show that the use of new finned heat sinks can improve the COP of the thermoelectric refrigeration system. Within the scope of the study, the thermal resistance of the new fins can be reduced by 42.6%, and the system COP value can be increased by 22.8%. In addition, increasing the cooling wind speed can f... [more]

Socio-Economic Determinants for Biochar Deployment in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: biochar, climate adaptation and mitigation, food security, socio-economic influence
Biochar may contribute to both agricultural productivity and atmospheric carbon dioxide removal. However, despite the many potential upsides of adding biochar to amend carbon-depleted soils in sub-Saharan Africa, deployment is largely lacking. This paper explores the socio-economic factors that can explain tendencies to avoid action. Based on a survey of 172 farming households, key informant interviews, and focus group discussions in the Mbeya and Songwe regions of Tanzania, which were targeted for a biochar aid program in 2014, several socio-economic drivers behind the continued use of biochar deployment were identified in this follow-up study. A key deployment driver was the increased crop yields, perceived to be the result of adding biochar to soils, increasing yields from 1 metric ton per hectare to 3 metric tons per hectare. Food security and family income were cited as the main reasons to engage in biochar production and use. Climate change mitigation and increased resilience wer... [more]

Thermophoresis and Brownian Effect for Chemically Reacting Magneto-Hydrodynamic Nanofluid Flow across an Exponentially Stretching Sheet
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: boundary layer, Brownian motion, Buongiorno model, exponentially stretching surface, fluid
This comparative research investigates the influence of a flexible magnetic flux and a chemical change on the freely fluid motion of a (MHD) magneto hydrodynamic boundary layer incompressible nanofluid across an exponentially expanding sheet. Water and ethanol are used for this analysis. The temperature transmission improvement of fluids is described using the Buongiorno model, which includes Brownian movement and thermophoretic distribution. The nonlinear partial differential equalities governing the boundary layer were changed to a set of standard nonlinear differential equalities utilizing certain appropriate similarity transformations. The bvp4c algorithm is then used to tackle the transformed equations numerically. Fluid motion is slowed by the magnetic field, but it is sped up by thermal and mass buoyancy forces and thermophoretic distribution increases non-dimensional fluid temperature resulting in higher temperature and thicker boundary layers. The Development of CO2 Instantaneous Emission Model of Full Hybrid Vehicle with the Use of Machine Learning Techniques
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CO2 emission, electric vehicles, emission modelling, full hybrid, Machine Learning, passenger cars, vehicle emission
Road transport contributes to almost a quarter of carbon dioxide emissions in the EU. To analyze the exhaust emissions generated by vehicle flows, it is necessary to use specialized emission models, because it is infeasible to equip all vehicles on the road in the tested road sections with the Portable Emission Measurement System (PEMS). However, the currently used emission models may be inadequate to the investigated vehicle structure or may not be accurate due to the used macroscale. This state of affairs is especially related to full hybrid vehicles, since there are none of the microscale emission models that give estimated emissions values exclusively for this kind of drive system. Several automakers over the past decade have invested in hybrid vehicles with great opportunities to reduce costs through better design, learning, and economies of scale. In this work, the authors propose a methodology for creating a CO2 emission model, which takes relatively little computational time, a... [more]

Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: combined heat and power, load optimal allocation, particle swarm algorithm, steam-water equation
China aims to peak carbon emissions by 2030. As a result, small-scale coal-fired combined heat and power (CHP) units and self-provided units are gradually shut down, and large-scale coal-fired CHP units are a solution to undertake the industrial heat loads. From the perspective of the industrial heat load allocation during the non-heating season, the problems regarding the coal-saving scheduling strategy of coal-fired CHP units are addressed. The steam-water equations of CHP units are established to analyze the heat-power coupling characteristics. The energy utilization efficiency, exergy efficiency and the coal consumption are analyzed. The optimization model of saving coal consumption is established and the adaptive mutation particle swarm optimization (AMPSO) is introduced to solve the above model. The 330 MW coal-fired CHP unit is taken as an example, and the results show that for the constant main flow rate, each increase of 1 t/h industrial steam extraction will reduce the power... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CROWDTHERMAL project, geothermal energy, SLO, social license
Geothermal energy is a resource that has the potential for development in many countries around the world. Despite its versatility and economic viability, this resource faces numerous obstacles that hinder its deployment and capacity for achieving a similar market share as other renewable and clean energy sources. Both technical and non-technical barriers can be highly detrimental to the implementation of geothermal projects. A social license to operate (SLO) is a tool that can help the deployment of geothermal energy. As a new concept, SLO is little developed in the business literature but is still being adopted in many industries. Its main challenges reside in its context-dependence and the lack of clear frameworks to utilize it. This paper introduces, in a first known attempt, through a qualitative approach, a conceptual model of the social license to operate in the geothermal energy sector. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Asal-Ghoubbet Rift, cost analysis, Djibouti, geothermal energy, Hydrogen, wind energy
The Republic of Djibouti has untapped potential in terms of renewable energy resources, such as geothermal, wind, and solar energy. This study examines the economic feasibility of green hydrogen production by water electrolysis using wind and geothermal energy resources in the Asal−Ghoubbet Rift (AG Rift), Republic of Djibouti. It is the first study in Africa that compares the cost per kg of green hydrogen produced by wind and geothermal energy from a single site. The unit cost of electricity produced by the wind turbine (0.042 $/kWh) is more competitive than that of a dry steam geothermal plant (0.086 $/kWh). The cost of producing hydrogen with a suitable electrolyzer powered by wind energy ranges from $0.672/kg H2 to $1.063/kg H2, while that produced by the high-temperature electrolyzer (HTE) powered by geothermal energy ranges from $3.31/kg H2 to $4.78/kg H2. Thus, the AG Rift area can produce electricity and green hydrogen at low-cost using wind energy compared to geothermal energy... [more]

Reduction Reactivity of Low Grade Iron Ore-Biomass Pellets for a Sustainable Ironmaking Process
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biomass, iron ore, pellet, reduction degree, reduction reactivity
Currently, fossil fuels are still the primary fuel source and reducing agent in the steel industries. The utilization of fossil fuels is strongly associated with CO2 emissions. Therefore, an alternative solution for green steel production is highly recommended, with the use of biomass as a source of fuel and a reducing agent. Biomass’s growth consumes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which may be stored for variable amounts of time (carbon dioxide removal, or CDR). The pellets used in this study were prepared from a mixture of low-grade iron ore and palm kernel shells (PKS). The reducing reactivity of the pellets was investigated by combining thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and laboratory experiments. In the TGA, the heating changes stably from room temperature to 950 °C with 5−15 °C/min heating rate. The laboratory experiments’ temperature and heating rate variations were 600−900 °C and 10−20 °C/min, respectively. Additionally, the reduction mechanism was observed based on the X-r... [more]

Building-level electrical distribution systems comprise a myriad of current-carrying equipment, conversion devices, and protection devices that deliver power from the utility or local distributed energy resources to end-use building loads. Electric power has traditionally been generated, transmitted, and distributed in alternating current (AC). However, the last decade has seen a significant increase in the integration of native direct current (DC) equipment that has elevated the importance of DC distribution systems. Numerous studies have comparatively examined the performance of various electrical distribution systems in buildings but have failed to achieve uniform conclusions, primarily because of a lack of consistent and analogous performance evaluation methods. This paper aims to fill this gap by providing a standard set of metrics and measurement boundaries to consistently evaluate the performance of AC, DC, or hybrid AC/DC electrical distribution systems.
