ARIMA Models in Electrical Load Forecasting and Their Robustness to Noise
Ewa Chodakowska, Joanicjusz Nazarko, Łukasz Nazarko
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ARIMA, electricity load, forecasting, model identification, robustness, Simulation, tolerance to noise
The paper addresses the problem of insufficient knowledge on the impact of noise on the auto-regressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model identification. The work offers a simulation-based solution to the analysis of the tolerance to noise of ARIMA models in electrical load forecasting. In the study, an idealized ARIMA model obtained from real load data of the Polish power system was disturbed by noise of different levels. The model was then re-identified, its parameters were estimated, and new forecasts were calculated. The experiment allowed us to evaluate the robustness of ARIMA models to noise in their ability to predict electrical load time series. It could be concluded that the reaction of the ARIMA model to random disturbances of the modeled time series was relatively weak. The limiting noise level at which the forecasting ability of the model collapsed was determined. The results highlight the key role of the data preprocessing stage in data mining and learning. They cont... [more]
Inventory of Reservoirs of Key Significance for Water Management in Poland—Evaluation of Changes in Their Capacity
Łukasz Pieron, Damian Absalon, Michał Habel, Magdalena Matysik
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: capacity management, drought prevention, flood protection, reservoir capacity, retention, retention reservoirs, siltation, water–energy nexus
Dam reservoirs constitute an important element of protection against floods and hydrological droughts, and they ensure the possibility of producing electricity. Loss of reservoirs’ storage capacity has a significant impact on the management of their water resources, including flood protection and counteracting the effects of drought and the possibility of producing electricity. The paper presents changes in the capacity of 47 reservoirs in Poland that have the status of key objects of protection against floods and hydrological drought. Based on the collected, unpublished data, the changes in capacity from the beginning of the reservoirs’ existence to 31 March 2021 were calculated, which allowed us to determine the total amount of lost capacity and the pace of the processes taking place. From the beginning of operation (average operation time 48 years), the capacity has decreased by about 5%, which means that almost 200 million m3 less water is stored. Detailed analyses of the lost capa... [more]
A Novel Fuzzy PI Control Method for Variable Frequency Brushless Synchronous Generators
Yongjie Wang, Huizhen Wang, Weifeng Liu, Qin Wang
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: brushless synchronous generator, electric aircraft, fuzzy PI controller, generator control unit
With the application of more electric aircraft (MEA) technology, variable frequencies and high power ratings become import features of aero-generators. The brushless synchronous generator, which has a three-stage structure, is the most commonly used type of aero-generator. Due to the variation of operating conditions, the implementation of generator controllers becomes more and more difficult. In this paper, a state space model of a generator is derived and the influence of different operating conditions on the frequency response characteristics of the generator is revealed. Based on a fuzzy PI controller, an additional fuzzy logic controller is applied to modify the PI parameters of the voltage loop by introducing the generator speed to cope with the speed variation. Finally, the results of the simulations and experiments demonstrate that the dual fuzzy PI controller can improve both the steady-state and dynamic performance of the brushless synchronous generator, verifying the previou... Michele Zanoni, Riccardo Chiumeo, Liliana Tenti, Massimo Volta
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep learning, distributed monitoring system, Machine Learning, power quality, voltage dips
This paper presents the integration of advanced machine learning techniques in the medium voltage distributed monitoring system QuEEN. This system is aimed to monitor voltage dips in the Italian distribution network mainly for survey and research purposes. For each recorded event it is able to automatically evaluate its residual voltage and duration from the corresponding voltage rms values and provide its “validity” (invalidating any false events caused by voltage transformers saturation) and its “origin”(upstream or downstream from the measurement point) by proper procedures and algorithms (current techniques). On the other hand, in the last years new solutions have been proposed by RSE to improve the assessment of the validity and origin of the event: the DELFI classifier (DEep Learning for False voltage dips Identification) and the FExWaveS + SVM classifier (Features Extraction from Waveform Segmentation + Support Vector Machine classifier). These advanced functionalities have been... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: BP neural network, disturbance identification, modulated broadband mode decomposition, photovoltaic power quality, signal feature extraction
The Broadband Mode Decomposition (BMD) method was previously proposed to solve the Gibbs phenomenon that occurs during photovoltaic signal decomposition; its main idea is to build a dictionary which contains signal features, and to search in the dictionary to solve the problem. However, BMD has some shortcomings; especially if the relative bandwidth of the decomposed signal is not small enough, it may treat a square wave signal as several narrowband signals, resulting in a deviation in the decomposition effect. In order to solve the problem of relative bandwidth, the original signal is multiplied by a high-frequency, single-frequency signal, and the wideband signal is processed as an approximate wideband signal. This is the modulation broadband mode decomposition algorithm (MBMD) proposed in this article. In order to further identify and classify the disturbances in the photovoltaic direct current (DC) signal, the experiment uses composite multi-scale fuzzy entropy (CMFE) to calculate... [more]

Keywords: Cascaded H-Bridge (CHB), Fuel Cell (FC), Improved Squirrel Search Algorithm (ISSA), Oscillatory Transient, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC), Squirrel Search Algorithm (SSA), Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), voltage sag, voltage swell
The generation of energy by conventional systems leads to several environmental issues. Fuel Cell (FC), being a new renewable energy source, has emerged as one of the promising alternatives to obtain clean and efficient energy generation. This paper highlights the power quality enhancement of the grid connected FC through a boost converter and 25 level Cascaded H-Bridge (CHB) Multi-Level Inverter (MLI) using the classical PID controller. To drive the MLI connected to the grid for governing the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) voltage between the FC and the grid, two PID controllers have been utilized. The conventional evolutionary techniques such as Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Squirrel Search Algorithm (SSA) are implemented to tune the PID controllers for dynamic operations. To further enhance the convergence speed of computation and precision of the classical techniques used, an Improved Squirrel Search Algorithm (ISSA) has been proposed in this work. The grid connected power... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy harvesting, fractional open-circuit voltage (FOCV), light-dependent resistor (LDR), maximum power point tracking (MPPT), perovskite solar cell (PSC), sample and hold circuit (S&H)
The performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has been improved throughout the years. These photovoltaic (PV) cells can be used to power Internet of Things (IoT) devices for indoor applications. A perovskite PV energy harvesting system with a stand-by battery that continuously powers an IoT device is developed in this work. The battery is required to complement the PSCs when the latter have difficulties in power delivery during low or no irradiance. The performance of the energy harvesting circuit as well as the battery charge and discharge scenarios are investigated. Voltage matching between the PSC and the battery is achieved by a boost converter. The PSC energy harvesting system uses fractional open-circuit voltage (FOCV) based maximum power point tracking (MPPT), which utilizes a Sample and Hold (S&H) circuit. The FOCV technique is based on a comparison of the perovskite PV open circuit voltages and the maximum power points. For each irradiance level, the maximum power point is... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric mobility, forecasting for FCEV, fuel cell vehicles, Hydrogen, plug-in hybrid, predictive model, socio-technical transition
In recent years, the growing concern for air quality has led to the development of sustainable vehicles to replace conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Currently, the most widespread technology in Europe and Portugal is that of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) or plug-in HEV (PHEV) electric cars, but hydrogen-based transport has also shown significant growth in the commercialization of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV) and in the development of new infrastructural schemes. In the current panorama of EV, particular attention should be paid to hydrogen technology, i.e., FCEVs, which is potentially a valid alternative to BEVs and can also be hybrid (FCHEV) and plug-in hybrid (FCPHEV). Several sources cited show a positive trend of hydrogen in the transport sector, identifying a growing trend in the expansion of hydrogen infrastructure, although at this time, it is still at an early stage of development. At the moment, the cost of building the infrastructure is still hig... [more]
Adaptive Tracking Method of Distorted Voltage Using IMM Algorithm under Grid Frequency Fluctuation Conditions
Haoyao Nie, Xiaohua Nie
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distorted voltage, dynamic tracking model, frequency fluctuation, interacting multiple model algorithm, Kalman filter
This paper newly proposes an interactive multiple model (IMM) algorithm to adaptively track distorted AC voltage with the grid frequency fluctuation. The usual tracking methods are Kalman filter (KF) algorithm with a fixed frequency and KF algorithm with frequency identifier. The KF algorithm with a fixed frequency has a larger covariance parameter to guarantee the tracking robustness. However, it has a large tracking error. The KF algorithm with frequency identifier overly depends on the accuracy and stability of frequency identifier. The advantage of the proposed method is that it is decoupled from frequency detection and does not depend on frequency detection accuracy. First, the orthogonal vector dynamic (OVD) tracking model of the sine wave is established. Then, a model set covering the grid frequency fluctuation range is formed, and a new OVD-IMM tracking algorithm is proposed in combination with IMM algorithm. In the end, the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed OVD-IMM al... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep learning, long short-term memory, time series forecasting, wind power forecasting
Wind energy has been recognized as the most promising and economical renewable energy source, attracting increasing attention in recent years. However, considering the variability and uncertainty of wind energy, accurate forecasting is crucial to propel high levels of wind energy penetration within electricity markets. In this paper, a comparative framework is proposed where a suite of long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural networks (RNN) models, inclusive of standard, bidirectional, stacked, convolutional, and autoencoder architectures, are implemented to address the existing gaps and limitations of reported wind power forecasting methodologies. These integrated networks are implemented through an iterative process of varying hyperparameters to better assess their effect, and the overall performance of each architecture, when tackling one-hour to three-hours ahead wind power forecasting. The corresponding validation is carried out through hourly wind power data from the Spanis... [more]

Keywords: cold ironing, electrification, maritime, operation management, renewable energy source, seaport microgrids, shipboard microgrid
Seaports are well known as the medium that has evolved into the central link between sea and land for complex marine activities. The growth in maritime logistics particularly necessitates a large volume of energy supply in order to maintain the operation of sea trade, resulting in an imbalance between generation and demand sides. Future projections for three major concerns show an increase in load demand, cost of operation, and environmental issues. In order to overcome these problems, integrating microgrids as an innovative technology in the seaport power system appears to be a vital strategy. It is believed that microgrids enhance seaport operation by providing sustainable, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective energy. Although microgrids are well established and widely used in a variety of operations on land, their incorporation into the seaport is still limited. The involvement of a variety of heavy loads such as all-electric ships, cranes, cold ironing, and buildings infras... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: global horizontal irradiance, Machine Learning, physical model, semi-empirical model, solar irradiance
Solar irradiance models contribute to mitigating the lack of measurement data at a ground station. Conventionally, the models relied on physical calculations or empirical correlations. Recently, machine learning as a sophisticated statistical method has gained popularity due to its accuracy and potential. While some studies compared machine learning models with other models, a study has not yet been performed that compares them side-by-side to assess their performance using the same datasets in different locations. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the accuracy of three representative models for estimating solar irradiance using atmospheric variables measurement and cloud amount derived from satellite images as the input parameters. Based on its applicability and performance, this study selected the fast all-sky radiation model for solar applications (FARMS) derived from the radiative transfer approach, the Hammer model that simplified atmospheric correlation, and the long short-t... March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon composite, pantograph sliders, railroad wire, thermal properties
This article presents the methodology, description, and results of experimental studies aimed at determining the impact of the copper concentration in a carbon−metal composite contact strip on the maximum temperature of the copper contact wire during a contact event when used for operation in the railway industry in Europe. Based on these tests, we determined the minimum percentage of copper that is required for the composite to meet the normative requirements for current loads. In addition to experimental research, a 3D FEM numerical model was also developed in which the contact strip and contact wire geometry were mapped, along with imposed loads resulting from the test for current loads mentioned above. Fifteen simulation variants were carried out for the established model, where the value of the thermal conductivity coefficient and the specific heat coefficient were varied. On this basis, we analyzed the sensitivity of thermal coefficients to the contact wire temperature and determ... [more]
Design and Assessment of ADRC-Based Autopilot for Energy-Efficient Ship Steering
Zenon Zwierzewicz, Lech Dorobczyński, Jarosław Artyszuk
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ADRC methodology, full-scale ship model, ship autopilot design
This paper looks at a typical problem encountered in the process of designing an automatic ship’s course stabilisation system with the use of a relatively new methodology referred to as the Active Disturbance Rejection Control (ADRC). The main advantage of this approach over classic autopilots based on PID algorithms, still in the majority, is that it eliminates the tuning problem and, thus, ensures a much better average performance of the ship in various speed, loading, nautical and weather conditions during a voyage. All of these factors call for different and often dynamically variable autopilot parameters, which are difficult to assess, especially by the ship’s crew or owner. The original result of this article is that the required controller parameters are approximated based on some canonical model structure and analysis of the hydrodynamic properties of a wide class of ships. Another novelty is the use of a fully verified, realistic numerical hydrodynamic model of the ship as a s... [more]
Macroeconomic Factors Influencing Public Policy Strategies for Blue and Green Hydrogen
Roberto Fazioli, Francesca Pantaleone
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: blue hydrogen, Carbon Capture, energy transition, green hydrogen, Sustainability
The aim of this paper is to analyze the factors affecting hydrogen and Carbon Capture and Storage Technologies (“CCS”) policies, taking into consideration Fossil Fuel Consumption, Oil Reserves, the Debt/GDP Ratio, the Trilemma Index and other variables with respect to OECD countries. STATA 17 was used for the analysis. The results confirm the hypothesis that countries with high fossil fuel consumption and oil reserves are investing in blue hydrogen and CCS towards a “zero-carbon-emission” perspective. Moreover, countries with a good Debt/GDP ratio act most favorably to green policies by raising their Public Debt, because Foreign Direct Investments are negatively correlated with those kinds of policies. Future research should exploit Green Finance policy decision criteria on green and blue hydrogen.

Michelle Kitayama da Silva, Mehreen Saleem Gul, Hassam Chaudhry
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bifacial, degradation, mismatch, photovoltaic, PV failure, shading effect
An evaluation of the degradation effects on photovoltaic modules is essential to minimise uncertainties in the system operation. Bifacial photovoltaic technology is attracting attention due to the capacity of generating energy from the front and rear sides. This paper presents a review of degradation factors, for both conventional monofacial and bifacial photovoltaic modules, to highlight how the current and voltage characteristics of these technologies are affected by degradation. Microcracking, encapsulant discoloration, and light induced degradation seem to have similar effects on both modules. Contrarily, bifacial modules are more prone to potential induced degradation as the electromagnetic shielding is affected by the bifaciality. Bifacial devices are less affected by light and elevated temperature induced degradation. The degradation (1.3%) is similar for both technologies, up to 40 kWh/m2 of solar radiation. Above this value, monofacial degradation increases faster, reaching va... [more]

Keywords: battery charge/discharge regulation module, maximum power point tracking (MPPT), power conversion unit, satellite power sources, sequential switching shunt regulation (S3R), solar array regulation module
In space vehicles, the typical configurations for the Solar Array Power Regulators in charge of managing power transfer from the solar array to the power bus are quite different from the corresponding devices in use for terrestrial applications. A thorough analysis is reported for the most popular approaches, namely Sequential Switching Shunt Regulation and parallel-input Pulse Width Modulated converters with Maximum Power Point Tracking. Their performance is compared with reference to a typical mission in low Earth orbit, highlighting the respective strengths and weaknesses. A novel solar array managing technique, the Sequential Maximum Power Tracking, is also introduced in the trade-off and was demonstrated able to boost energy harvesting, especially in the presence of mismatching in the solar array. It also can achieve top levels of reliability using a rather simple control hardware. Its operation was verified both by a Matlab−Simulink model and by an experimental breadboard.
Application of State Estimation in Distribution Systems with Embedded Microgrids
Nikolaos M. Manousakis, George N. Korres
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distribution system, load estimate, microgrid, network splitting problem, network topology, state estimation
In this paper, a weighted least square (WLS) state estimation algorithm with equality constraints is proposed for smart distribution networks embedded with microgrids. Since only a limited number of real-time measurements are available at the primary or secondary substations and distributed generation sites, load estimates at unmeasured buses remote from the substations are needed to execute state estimation. The load information can be obtained by forecasted and historical data or smart real-time meters. The proposed algorithms can be applied in either grid-connected or islanded operation mode and can efficiently identify breaker status errors at the main substations and feeders, where sufficient measurement redundancy exists. The impact of the accuracy of real and pseudo-measurements on the estimated bus voltages is tested with a 55-bus distribution network including distributed generation.

Keywords: bi-level, multi-energy complementary system, multi-objective optimization, NSGA-III, single-level
Multi-energy complementary systems (MCSs) are complex multilevel systems. In the process of system planning, many aspects—such as power planning, investment cost, and environmental impact—should be considered. However, different decision makers tend to have different levels of control objectives, and the multilevel problems of the system need to be solved effectively with comprehensive judgment. Therefore, based on the terminal MCS energy structure model, the optimization method of MCS planning and operation coordination, considering the influence of planning and operation in the system’s life cycle, is studied in this paper. Consequently, the research on the collaborative optimization strategy of MCS construction and operation was carried out based on the bi-level multi-objective optimization theory in this paper. Considering the mutual restraint and correlation between system construction and operation in practical engineering, a bi-level optimization model for collaborative optimiza... [more]
Simulation-Assisted Determination of the Start-Up Time of a Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell
Merit Bodner, Željko Penga, Walter Ladreiter, Mathias Heidinger, Viktor Hacker
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fuel cell degradation, fuel cell start-up, transient CFD simulation
Fuel starvation is a major cause of anode corrosion in low temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cells. The fuel cell start-up is a critical step, as hydrogen may not yet be evenly distributed in the active area, leading to local starvation. The present work investigates the hydrogen distribution and risk for starvation during start-up and after nitrogen purge by extending an existing computational fluid dynamic model to capture transient behavior. The results of the numerical model are compared with detailed experimental analysis on a 25 cm2 triple serpentine flow field with good agreement in all aspects and a required time step size of 1 s. This is two to three orders of magnitude larger than the time steps used by other works, resulting in reasonably quick calculation times (e.g., 3 min calculation time for 1 s of experimental testing time using a 2 million element mesh).

Keywords: EnergyPlus, ground heat exchanger, KIVA, load-handled ratio, thermally activated building system
The thermally activated building system (TABS) can reduce the peak load by integrating with the ground heat exchangers. When integrated, the cost of groundwork and stability of the ground temperature would counteract because the weather conditions would influence the ground temperature in shallow depth. However, previous studies on TABS assumed constant ground temperatures such as average outdoor air temperature. In this study, ground temperatures in different depths are simulated for their detailed investigations, and simulated results of ground temperature were applied to building energy simulations for observing the load-handled ratio (LHR), representing the peak load reduction by TABS evaluated in various weather conditions. Simulation results of ground temperatures from 1 m to 39 m depths show that the temperature stabilized at 2 m to 11 m depths depending on the characteristics of the outdoor air temperature. LHR increased as the ground depth increased because the ground temperat... [more]
