An Improved Droop Control Scheme of a Doubly-Fed Induction Generator for Various Disturbances
Yien Xu, Pei Chen, Xinsong Zhang, Dejian Yang
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive droop coefficient, doubly-fed induction generator, frequency nadir, ROCOF, wind power
Doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs) participate in the system frequency regulation using a fixed-coefficient droop control scheme. Nevertheless, the frequency-supporting capability of this control scheme with fixed gain is limited for different disturbances. This paper suggests an improved droop control scheme for a DFIG that can both alleviate the frequency nadir and maximum rate of change of frequency (ROCOF) during the frequency regulation. To achieve this, an adaptive droop control coefficient based on the ROCOF is suggested. The proposed droop control coefficient is a linear function of the ROCOF. Therefore, the proposed scheme can adjust the control coefficient according to the varying ROCOF. Simulation results clearly demonstrate that the proposed droop control scheme shows better effectiveness in improving the maximum ROCOF and frequency nadir under various sizes of disturbance, even in a varying wind speed.
The Essence of Relationships between the Crude Oil Market and Foreign Currencies Market Based on a Study of Key Currencies

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: correlation, crude oil, currencies, forecasting models, global energy markets, modeling the risk of energy commodities
Structural changes occurring in the crude oil market have stimulated the emergence of hypotheses suggesting that the relationship between prices of this raw material and the US dollar exchange rate can gradually become similar to that observed between oil prices and exchange rates of the currencies of the countries whose revenues from the export of this resource are a significant part of their current account balance. The purpose of this study was to determine and evaluate the time-varying dependence between oil prices and the exchange rate of the US dollar in the context of the same relationship for the Chinese, European, Japanese, Saudi, and Russian currencies. The results of our analyses implicate that a negative correlation between the variables in question grows stronger in time periods preceding global shocks and during thereof. The dominance of the USD in the crude oil market is reflected in similar characteristics of the correlations of the currencies of other countries, such a... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: bio-oil, biosourced porous carbon, electrochemical performances, tannin, xerogel-like materials
Energy storage is currently one of the most significant technological challenges globally, and supercapacitor is a prominent candidate over batteries due to its ability for fast charging and long lifetime. Supercapacitors typically use porous carbon as electrodes, because of both the high conductivity and surface area of the material. However, the state-of-the-art porous carbon described in the literature uses toxic chemicals and complex procedures that enhance costs and pollute the environment. Thus, a more sustainable procedure to produce porous carbon is highly desirable. In this context, xerogel-like carbons were prepared by a new, cheap, simple route to polymerization reactions of tannin-formaldehyde in a bio-oil by-product. Using bio-oil in its natural pH allowed a cost reduction and avoided using new reactants to change the reactional medium. Textural properties and electrochemical performances were improved by fast activating the material per 20 min. The non-activated carbon xe... [more]
Intelligent Reconfigurable Photovoltaic System
Ekaterina Engel, Igor Kovalev, Nikolay Testoyedov, Nikita E. Engel
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: grid-connected PV system, machine learning modeling, maximum power point tracking, PV module
The global maximum power point tracking of a PV array under partial shading represents a global optimization problem. Conventional maximum power point tracking algorithms fail to track the global maximum power point, and global optimization algorithms do not provide global maximum power point in real-time mode due to a slow convergence process. This paper presents an intelligent reconfigurable photovoltaic system on the basis of a modified fuzzy neural net that includes a convolutional block, recurrent networks, and fuzzy units. We tune the modified fuzzy neural net based on modified multi-dimension particle swarm optimization. Based on the processing of the sensors’ signals and the photovoltaic array’s image, the tuned modified fuzzy neural net generates an electrical interconnection matrix of a photovoltaic total-cross-tied array, which reaches the global maximum power point under non-homogeneous insolation. Thus, the intelligent reconfigurable photovoltaic system represents an effec... [more]
A Review of Model Predictive Controls Applied to Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems

Keywords: Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems, connected vehicle, cruise control, lane keeping, Model Predictive Control, optimal control, path following
Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADASs) are currently gaining particular attention in the automotive field, as enablers for vehicle energy consumption, safety, and comfort enhancement. Compelling evidence is in fact provided by the variety of related studies that are to be found in the literature. Moreover, considering the actual technology readiness, larger opportunities might stem from the combination of ADASs and vehicle connectivity. Nevertheless, the definition of a suitable control system is not often trivial, especially when dealing with multiple-objective problems and dynamics complexity. In this scenario, even though diverse strategies are possible (e.g., Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy, Rule-based strategy, etc.), the Model Predictive Control (MPC) turned out to be among the most effective ones in fulfilling the aforementioned tasks. Hence, the proposed study is meant to produce a comprehensive review of MPCs applied to scenarios where ADASs are exploited and... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: classification algorithms, feature extraction, feature selection, hybrid machine learning, regression analysis, solar energy, solar radiation prediction, Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF)
Solar radiation prediction is an important process in ensuring optimal exploitation of solar energy power. Numerous models have been applied to this problem, such as numerical weather prediction models and artificial intelligence models. However, well-designed hybridization approaches that combine numerical models with artificial intelligence models to yield a more powerful model can provide a significant improvement in prediction accuracy. In this paper, novel hybrid machine learning approaches that exploit auxiliary numerical data are proposed. The proposed hybrid methods invoke different machine learning paradigms, including feature selection, classification, and regression. Additionally, numerical weather prediction (NWP) models are used in the proposed hybrid models. Feature selection is used for feature space dimension reduction to reduce the large number of recorded parameters that affect estimation and prediction processes. The rough set theory is applied for attribute reductio... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: burden sharing, effort sharing regulation, emissions trading system, energy system analysis, Green Deal, NEWAGE, TIMES PanEU
The Green Deal of the European Union defines extremely ambitious climate targets for 2030 (−55% emissions compared to 1990) and 2050 (−100%), which go far beyond the current goals that the EU member states have agreed on thus far. The question of which sectors contribute how much has already been discussed, but is far from decided, while the question of which countries shoulder how much of the tightened reduction targets has hardly been discussed. We want to contribute significantly to answering these policy questions by analysing the necessary burden sharing within the EU from both an energy system and an overall macroeconomic perspective. For this purpose, we use the energy system model TIMES PanEU and the computational general equilibrium model NEWAGE. Our results show that excessively strong targets for the Emission Trading System (ETS) in 2030 are not system-optimal for achieving the 55% overall target, reductions should be made in such a way that an emissions budget ratio of 39 (... Keywords: energy consumption, Energy Efficiency, hydraulic actuators, hydraulic systems, variable load
The article is an overview of various methods of braking and controlling the movement of the piston rod under various load conditions. The purpose of this review is to systematize the state of the art in terms of efficiency, energy consumption and limitations of each method. The article discusses systems with different types of hydraulic actuators, operating under passive, active and variable load during the duty cycle of the piston rod. The existing literature was analysed in terms of applicability, reduction of energy consumption of the systems and even the possibility of energy return. Attention was paid to the costs and the need for additional power sources, as well as the problems and limitations of the presented methods. Based on the simulation model, energy consumption tests were carried out in systems with an actuator loaded with a variable force. There is a comparison of all methods in terms of actuator type, load, energy consumption and the possibility of energy recovery.

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: paramagnetic fluid, thermo-magnetic convection, transition to turbulence
Transition to turbulence and changes in the fluid flow structure are subjects of continuous analysis and research, especially for unique fields of research such as the thermo-magnetic convection of weakly magnetic fluids. Therefore, an experimental and numerical research of the influence of an external magnetic field on a natural convection’s fluid flow was conducted in the presented research. The experimental part was performed for an enclosure with a 0.5 aspect ratio, which was filled with a paramagnetic fluid and placed in a superconducting magnet in a position granting the enhancement of the flow. The process was recorded as temperature signals from the thermocouples placed in the analyzed fluid. The numerical research enabled an investigation based not only on temperature, but velocities as well. Experimental and numerical data were analyzed with the application of extended fast Fourier transform and wavelet analysis. The obtained results allowed the determination of changes in th... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: corporate governance, CSR, energy industry, environmental impact, mining industry, social impact
The development of the economy is related not only to its benefits, but also its negative aspects. One of the negative impacts is the impact on the environment and society. Many types of industry and, in a narrower sense, of enterprises, adversely affect their surroundings. It is one of the many factors that has contributed to the growing popularity of the concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR). It is important to balance business and industry with the environment and community impacts. This study presents selected aspects of corporate social responsibility, such as society, the environment, and corporate governance in relation to the industry responsible for energy production and distribution. This group includes the energy sector (mining oil, gas, consumer fuels, and energy equipment and services), the materials sector (metallurgy and mining), as well as distribution (gas, electricity supply, independent energy producers, and renewable energy). The aim of the article was to... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blade tip, gas turbine, heat transfer, high speed condition
This study experimentally investigated the effects of cascade inlet velocity on the distribution and the level of the heat transfer coefficient on a gas turbine blade tip. The tests were conducted in a transient turbine test facility at Korea Aerospace University, and three cascade inlet velocities—30, 60, and 90 m/s—were considered. The heat transfer coefficient was measured using the transient IR camera technique with a linear regression method, and both the squealer and plane tips were investigated. The results showed that the overall averaged heat transfer coefficient was generally proportional to the inlet velocity. As the inlet velocity is increased from 30 m/s to 60 m/s and 90 m/s, the heat transfer coefficient increased by 11.4% and 25.0% for plane tip, and 26.6% and 64.1% for squealer tip, respectively. However, the heat transfer coefficient near the leading edge of the squealer tip and the reattachment region of the plane tip was greatly affected by the cascade inlet velocity... [more]

Keywords: analytic wavelet, instantaneous frequency, partial discharge, singular spectrum analysis, sinusoidal noise removal, synchrosqueezed transform, time frequency representation
In electrical engineering, partial discharge (PD) measurement has been widely used for inspecting and judging insulation conditions of high voltage (HV) apparatus. However, on-site PD measurement easily becomes contaminated by noises. Particularly, sinusoidal noise makes it difficult to recognize real PD signal, thus leading to the misjudgment of insulation conditions. Therefore, sinusoidal noise removal is necessary. In this paper, instantaneous frequency (IF) is introduced, and the synchrosqueezing transform (SST) as well as singular spectrum analysis (SSA) is proposed for sinusoidal noise removal. A continuous analytic wavelet transform is firstly applied to the noisy PD signal and then the time frequency representation (TFR) is reassigned by SST. Narrow-band sinusoidal noise has fixed IF, while PD signal has much larger frequency range and time-varying IF. Due to the difference, the reassigned TFR enables the sinusoidal noise to be distinguished from PD signal. After synthesizing t... [more]
The Potential of Ecological Distributed Energy Generation Systems, Situation, and Perspective for Poland

Keywords: alternative energy sources, biogas, biomass systems, hydropower systems, photovoltaic systems, wind systems
Poland needs to fulfill its climate goals and become “climate neutral” by 2050. The plan is intricate for the Polish Government because coal-powered power plants generate about 80 percent of electricity in the country. Although policymakers are making an effort to redesign the energy sector, a lot still remains to be done. The viral trend in that transformation involves installing photovoltaic (PV) panels by private, corporate, and self-government investors. For example, the “My energy” support program of the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management has helped finance 220,000 micro-PV installations. The achievement is significant but constitutes only partial success. PV powerplants will not simply replace coal powerplants. That is why the research on the ecological distributed energy generation systems has to be executed. The article presents the research results on ecological distributed energy generation systems, making the transformation of the Polish energy s... [more]

Keywords: AKD, ASA, cellulose, dielectric properties, hydrophilic, kraft paper, moisture absorption, nanoparticles, rutile-TiO2, thermal stability, transformer
Thermal stress and moisture absorption can cause a synergetic negative impact on kraft paper. Among various approaches for improving the dielectric properties of kraft paper, nanotechnology has had promising results. However, the hydrophilicity of most metal oxide nanoparticles renders nanomodified kraft paper more vulnerable to thermal stress and moisture, thereby inducing degradation. In nanomodified kraft paper research, the use of TiO2 nanoparticles has yielded the most promising results. The major shortfall, however, is the hydrophilicity of TiO2. This work investigated surface modifications of rutile-TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) for improved hydrophobicity and thermal stability. Rutile-TiO2 NPs is a nontoxic metal oxide that can withstand high temperature and is stable in chemical reactions. Two cases of surfactants were used—alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) and alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA). The intention was to increase heat resistance and reduce the surface free energy of the rutile-Ti... March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cluster analysis, energy transformation, renewable energy sources (RES), the new EU member states, Ward’s method
The European Union strives to create sustainable, low-carbon economies; therefore, energy policies of all member states should move towards renewable energy sources (RES). That concerns also the so-called new EU member states. These countries, on the one hand, are characterized by significant historical similarities in terms of post-communist legacy and adopted development strategies linked with the EU membership, and on the other hand, by significant social, economic and environmental differences resulting from different transformation and development paths and conditions. The question remains how the selected countries should cope with actions in the field of national energy transformations to confront the multiple challenges linked to assuring a significant level of sustainable development. In order to be successful, it is necessary to conduct an effective and rapid changes in the energy industry, which should be preceded by an analysis of the differentiation of countries in terms o... March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: free vortex, hydro turbine, power plant, response surface methodology
In this research paper, the relationship between a crossflow turbine and propeller turbine size changes and the pond size in a free vortex power generation system was investigated. This relationship can be written in the form of a new mathematical equation using the principles of the response surface methodology (RSM) method. This study aimed to compare the efficiency of a crossflow turbine and propeller turbine to enhance a micro power plant from free vortex. The pond size in a micro power plant from free vortex was 1 m in diameter and 0.5 m in height with a 0.2 m outlet drain at the bottom. All turbines were tested at different water flowrates of 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6 m3/s to identify the rpm, water head, voltage, and electric current to access the waterpower, power output, and overall efficiency. At a 0.02 m3/s water flowrate, the crossflow turbine had greater overall efficiency than the propeller turbine, reaching 9.09% efficiency. From the comparison of the results of the tw... [more]

Keywords: fail-to-open, fail-to-short, failure analysis, gate damage, SiC MOSFET
This paper presents a detailed analysis of 1200 V Silicon Carbide (SiC) power MOSFET exhibiting different short-circuit failure mechanisms and improvement in reliability by VDS and VGS depolarization. The device robustness has undergone an incremental pulse under different density decreasing; either drain-source voltage or gate-driver voltage. Unlike silicon device, the SiC MOSFET failure mechanism firstly displays specific gradual gate-cracks mechanism and progressive gate-damage accumulations greater than 4 µs/9 J·cm−2. Secondly, a classical drain-source thermal runaway appears, as for silicon devices, in a time greater than 9 µs. Correlations with short-circuit energy measurements and temperature simulations are investigated. It is shown that the first mechanism is an incremental soft gate-failure-mode which can be easily used to detect and protect the device by a direct feedback on the gate-driver. Furthermore, it is highlighted that this new mechanism can be sufficiently consolida... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: carbonate and sulfate scales, chelating acid, descaling, Hechuan gas field, high salinity
The Hechuan gas field is one of the tight gas reservoirs with the highest formation water salinity in China. The content of metal ions, such as calcium, magnesium, iron, and barium, is as high as 20 g/L. Severe scales in near-wellbore reservoir blocks the gas and liquid flow paths, affecting the normal production of gas wells. The analysis of scale samples shows that the scale compositions in the Hechuan gas field are complex, which are composed of calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, barium sulfate, iron salt, silicate, and other inorganic scales. To dissolve these scales, 14 kinds of laboratory self-made chelating acids named AST-01 to AST-14, sequentially, were evaluated by the descaling rate, in which the chelating acid AST-01 was selected with a dissolution rate of 77.7%. Meanwhile, the optimal concentration and reaction time of AST-01 were investigated, and the concentrations of the corrosion inhibitor, the iron ion stabilizer, and surfactants were also optimized. Then, a chelatin... [more]

Keywords: heat storage, high temperature aquifer thermal energy storage (HT-ATES), multi-energy system, sustainable heating
In the energy transition, multi-energy systems are crucial to reduce the temporal, spatial and functional mismatch between sustainable energy supply and demand. Technologies as power-to-heat (PtH) allow flexible and effective utilisation of available surplus green electricity when integrated with seasonal heat storage options. However, insights and methods for integration of PtH and seasonal heat storage in multi-energy systems are lacking. Therefore, in this study, we developed methods for improved integration and control of a high temperature aquifer thermal energy storage (HT-ATES) system within a decentralized multi-energy system. To this end, we expanded and integrated a multi-energy system model with a numerical hydro-thermal model to dynamically simulate the functioning of several HT-ATES system designs for a case study of a neighbourhood of 2000 houses. Results show that the integration of HT-ATES with PtH allows 100% provision of the yearly heat demand, with a maximum 25% smal... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: lean combustibility limit, numerical simulation, Reverse Flow Burner, steady state model, thermal oxidation
In this study, a steady state model for burning of coal mine methane in a Reverse Flow Burner (RFB) with full kinetics was developed by analogy of a steady counter-flow reactor, and the developed model was used for quick prediction of the lean combustibility limit (LCL). The model was successfully validated with experimental and numerical results, and it was shown that the developed model has excellent accuracy and computational efficiency. Good agreement between the predicted temperature, LCL, and the experiments was observed. The LCL of the equivalence ratio of 0.022 for methane/air mixture was obtained by the developed model. The model was then used to evaluate LCL for the RFB, focusing on the effect of heat loss and burner length on LCL. This indicated that the computational time using the developed model can be reduced by a factor of 1560 compared to the complete transient model.

Keywords: combined heat and power, energy cogeneration, Hydrogen, hydrogen industry, microreactors, nuclear industry, nuclear synergy, nuclear technology
An uninterrupted chain of energy supplies is the core of every activity, without exception for the operations of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A robust and efficient energy supply is fundamental for the success of missions and a guarantee of soldier safety. However, organizing a battlefield energy supply chain is particularly challenging because the risks and threats are particularly high. Moreover, the energy supply chain is expected to be flexible according to mission needs and able to be moved quickly if necessary. In line with ongoing technological changes, the growing popularity of hydrogen is undeniable and has been noticed by NATO as well. Hydrogen is characterised by a much higher energy density per unit mass than other fuels, which means that hydrogen fuel can increase the range of military vehicles. Consequently, hydrogen could eliminate the need for risky refuelling stops during missions as well as the number of fatalities associated with fuel delivery in combat ar... [more]

Keywords: building technologies, experimental demonstration, heat-pump control, MIQP, Model Predictive Control
It is considered necessary to implement advanced controllers such as model predictive control (MPC) to utilize the technical flexibility of a building polygeneration system to support the rapidly expanding renewable electricity grid. These can handle multiple inputs and outputs, uncertainties in forecast data, and plant constraints, amongst other features. One of the main issues identified in the literature regarding deploying these controllers is the lack of experimental demonstrations using standard components and communication protocols. In this original work, the economic-MPC-based optimal scheduling of a real-world heat pump-based building energy plant is demonstrated, and its performance is evaluated against two conventional controllers. The demonstration includes the steps to integrate an optimization-based supervisory controller into a typical building automation and control system with off-the-shelf HVAC components and usage of state-of-art algorithms to solve a mixed integer...
