A Dynamic Optimization Tool to Size and Operate Solar Thermal District Heating Networks Production Plants
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: district heating networks, economic nonlinear optimization, Julia (JuMP), multi-sources, solar thermal energy
The aim of the ISORC/OPTIMISER project is to increase and improve the use of solar thermal energy in district heating networks. One of the main tasks of the project is to develop an optimization tool for the sizing and operation of a solar district heating network. This is the first optimization tool using an open-source interface (Julia, JuMP) and solver (Ipopt) to solve nonlinear problems. This paper presents the multi-period optimization problem which is implemented to consider the dynamic variations in a year, represented by four typical days, with an hourly resolution. The optimum is calculated for a total duration of 20 years. First, this paper presents the modeling of the different components of a solar district heating network production plant: district network demand, storage and three sources, i.e., a fossil (gas) and two renewable (solar and biomass) sources. In order to avoid prohibitive computational time, the modeling of sources and storage has to be fairly simple. The mu... [more]

Mathematical Modeling of Urea Reaction with Sulfuric Acid and Phosphoric Acid to Produce Ammonium Sulfate and Ammonium Dihydrogen Phosphate Respectively
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: adiabatic heat, enthalpy, mathematical modeling, reaction rate, Simulation, urea stabilization
Urea is the final product of protein metabolism in mammals and can be found in different biological fluids. Use of mammalian urine in agricultural production as organic fertilizer requires safe handling to avoid the formation of ammonia that will decrease the fertilizer value due to the loss of nitrogen. Safe handling is also required to minimize the decomposition of urea into condensed products such as biuret and cyanuric acid, which will also have a negative impact on the potential sustainable production of crops and sanitation technologies. The study of thermodynamics and reaction kinetics of urea stabilization plays a key role in understanding the conditions under which undesirable compounds and impurities in urea-based fertilizers and urea-based selective catalytic reduction systems are formed. For this reason, we studied the reaction of urea in acid media to achieve urea stabilization by modeling the reaction of urea with sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid, and estimating the reac... [more]

Seven Different Lighting Conditions in Photogrammetric Studies of a 3D Urban Mock-Up
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: 3D urban lighting mock-up, artificial light at night (ALAN), artificial lighting, CCT, CRI, F-point, LED, light, light pollution, mock-up, photogrammetry, SfM, SPD, tie-point, urban lighting
One of the most important elements during photogrammetric studies is the appropriate lighting of the object or area under investigation. Nevertheless, the concept of “adequate lighting” is relative. Therefore, we have attempted, based on experimental proof of concept (technology readiness level—TRL3), to verify the impact of various types of lighting emitted by LED light sources for scene illumination and their direct influence on the quality of the photogrammetric study of a 3D urban mock-up. An important issue in this study was the measurement and evaluation of the artificial light sources used, based on illuminance (E), correlated colour temperature (CCT), colour rendering index (CRI) and Spectral power distribution (SPD) and the evaluation of the obtained point clouds (seven photogrammetric products of the same object, developed for seven different lighting conditions). The general values of the quality of the photogrammetric studies were compared. Additionally, we determined seven... [more]

Application of Thermal and Cavitation Effects for Heat and Mass Transfer Process Intensification in Multicomponent Liquid Media
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: acceleration, breaking, desorption, dispersed phase, force, pressure, speed
In this paper, the authors consider the processes of dynamic interaction between the boiling particles of the dispersed phase of the emulsion leading to the large droplet breakup. Differences in the consideration of forces that determine the breaking of non-boiling and boiling droplets have been indicated in the study. They have been determined by the possibility of using the model to define the processes of displacement, deformation, or fragmentation of the inclusion of the dispersed phase under the influence of a set of neighboring particles. The dynamics of bubbles in a compressible liquid with consideration for interfacial heat and mass transfer has also been analyzed in the paper. The effect of standard and system parameters on the intensity of cavitation processes is considered. Physical transformations during the cavitation treatment of liquid are caused not only by shock waves and radiated pressure pulses but also by extreme thermal effects. At the stage of ultimate bubble comp... [more]

Floating Offshore Vertical Axis Wind Turbines: Opportunities, Challenges and Way Forward
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: floating offshore wind, offshore wind, VAWT, vertical axis wind turbine
The offshore wind sector is expanding to deep water locations through floating platforms. This poses challenges to horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs) due to the ever growing size of blades and floating support structures. As such, maintaining the structural integrity and reducing the levelised cost of energy (LCoE) of floating HAWTs seems increasingly difficult. An alternative to these challenges could be found in floating offshore vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs). It is known that VAWTs have certain advantages over HAWTs, and in fact, some small-scale developers have successfully commercialised their onshore prototypes. In contrast, it remains unknown whether VAWTs can offer an advantage for deep water floating offshore wind farms. Therefore, here we present a multi-criteria review of different aspects of VAWTs to address this question. It is found that wind farm power density and reliability could be decisive factors to make VAWTs a feasible alternative for deep water floating... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Compressed Natural Gas, dual-fuel supply, engine external characteristics, tractive effort curves
Problems such as global warming and rising oil prices are driving the implementation of ideas to reduce liquid fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. One of them is the use of natural gas as an energy source. It is a hydrocarbon fuel with properties that allow the reduction of CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) emissions during combustion. Solutions are being implemented that allow for the use of natural gas to means of transport, namely in trucks of various categories and intended use. These installations are used in new vehicles, but also in the form of conversion for used cars, usually several years old. The article presents the results of tests of an engine from a used semi-trailer truck with a mileage of approx. 800 thousand km, with the compressed natural gas supply system installed. This installation (hardware and software), depending on the engine operating conditions, enables the replacement of up to 80% of diesel (base fuel) with natural gas. The impact of changing the fuel supply... [more]

Comprehensive Survey of Seismic Hazard at Geothermal Sites by a Meta-Analysis of the Underground Feedback Activation Parameter afb
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: anthropogenic hazard, geo-energy, meta-analysis, risk transfer, seismic hazard
Global efforts to tame CO2 emissions include the use of renewable energy sources, such as geo-energy harnessing. However, injecting pressurised fluids into the deep underground can induce earthquakes, hence converting CO2-related risk into seismic risk. Induced seismicity hazard is characterised by the overall seismic activity afb that is normalised by the injected fluid volume V and the parameter b of the Gutenberg−Richter law. The (afb,b) set has so far been estimated for a dozen of reservoir stimulations, while at least 53 geothermal fluid stimulations are known to exist, based on our survey. Here, we mined the induced seismicity literature and were able to increase the number of estimates to 39 after calculating afb from related published parameters and by imputing b with its expectation where this parameter was missing (0.65 ≤ b ≤ 2.9, with mean 1.16). Our approach was a two-step procedure: we first reviewed the entire literature to identify seismic hazard information gaps and the... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: business models, digital revolution, energy sector transformation, Hellwig’s method, Industry 4.0, literature review, strategic management
Digital transformation is a concept based on the use of digitalization and digitization. Digitalization leads to change of business models and provides a competitive advantage also in the energy sector. The process of change towards a digital business requires a specific strategy type, aimed to solve problems with uncertainty caused by Industry 4.0 implementation. This paper aims to propose a theoretical model combining different digitalization strategies and business models. Their theoretical foundations were discussed in the literature review part and related empirical research questions were attempted to be answered by the reference method analysis. The quantitative method of analysis was based on the secondary data from Eurostat for all EU member states and backed the theoretical part in terms of ICT variables. The novelty of this research is based on Hellwig’s reference method used in management sciences and the presented managerial implications. The discussed challenges of the en... [more]

Sparse Signal Reconstruction on Fixed and Adaptive Supervised Dictionary Learning for Transient Stability Assessment
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: dictionary impulsion, discrete cosine transform, discrete Haar transform, discrete wavelet transform, singular value decomposition, sparse signal decomposition, supervised dictionary learning, transient stability assessment
Fixed and adaptive supervised dictionary learning (SDL) is proposed in this paper for wide-area stability assessment. Single and hybrid fixed structures are developed based on impulse dictionary (ID), discrete Haar transform (DHT), discrete cosine transform (DCT), discrete sine transform (DST), and discrete wavelet transform (DWT) for sparse features extraction and online transient stability prediction. The fixed structures performance is compared with that obtained from transient K-singular value decomposition (TK-SVD) implemented while adding a stability status term to the optimization problem. Stable and unstable dictionary learning are designed based on datasets recorded by simulating thousands of contingencies with varying faults, load, and generator switching on the IEEE 68-bus test system. This separate supervised learning of stable and unstable scenarios allows determining root mean square error (RMSE), useful for online stability status assessment of new scenarios. With respec... Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Demand Response, demand side management, Energy Efficiency, Particle Swarm Optimization, smart grid energy system
The growing demand for electricity runs counter to European-level goals, which include activities aimed at sustainable development and environmental protection. In this context, efficient consumption of electricity attracts much research interest nowadays. One environment friendly solution to meet increased demand lies in the deployment of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in the network and in mobilizing the active participation of consumers in reducing the peak of demand, thus smoothing the overall load curve. This paper addresses the issue of efficient and economical use of electricity from the Demand Side Management (DSM) perspective and presents an implementation of a fully-parameterized and explicitly constrained incentive-based demand response program The program uses the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm and demonstrates the potential advantages of integrating RES while supporting two-way communication between energy production and consumption and two-way power exchange betwee... Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: HVDC fault current detection, HVDC protection equipment, mechanical DC circuit breaker, nonlinear impedance dynamic behavior of SI-SFCL, protection coordination between DC circuit breaker and SFCL, saturated iron core type SFCL, SFCL protection strategy
Recently, in order to overcome the difficulties of interrupting fault currents in multi-terminal direct current systems (MTDC), studies combining a saturated iron-core type superconducting current limiter (SFCL) and a direct current circuit breaker (DCCB) have been conducted. However, the effect of inductance change of the SI-SFCL on the interrupting time of the DCCB during fault has not been studied yet. In this paper, the interrupting time delay caused by the dynamic behavior of the inductance change during the fault current blocking process of the SI-SFCL combined with a DCCB was analyzed through experiments and a new fault detection method considering this phenomenon was proposed. After designing and manufacturing the laboratory-scale SI-SFCL and DCCB, a fault current interrupting test was performed and the inductance change pattern of the SI-SFCL was analyzed. Based on the analysis results, a new fault detection technique was proposed to alleviate the interruption time delay that... [more]

Modeling the Impact of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure on Regional Energy Systems: Fields of Action for an Improved e-Mobility Integration
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Agent-based modeling, charging infrastructure assessment, e-Mobility integration, global sensitivity analysis, levers, service quality
Since e-Mobility is on the rise worldwide, large charging infrastructure networks are required to satisfy the upcoming charging demand. Planning these networks not only involves different objectives from grid operators, drivers and Charging Station (CS) operators alike but it also underlies spatial and temporal uncertainties of the upcoming charging demand. Here, we aim at showing these uncertainties and assess different levers to enable the integration of e-Mobility. Therefore, we introduce an Agent-based model assessing regional charging demand and infrastructure networks with the interactions between charging infrastructure and electric vehicles. A global sensitivity analysis is applied to derive general guidelines for integrating e-Mobility effectively within a region by considering the grid impact, the economic viability and the Service Quality of the deployed Charging Infrastructure (SQCI). We show that an improved macro-economic framework should enable infrastructure investments... [more]

Big Data Analytics for Spatio-Temporal Service Orders Demand Forecasting in Electric Distribution Utilities
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: advance statistics for energy, big data in power system operation, prediction analytics, spatio-temporal forecasting, utility analytics
This paper presents a big data analytics-based model developed for electric distribution utilities aiming to forecast the demand of service orders (SOs) on a spatio-temporal basis. Being fed by robust history and location data from a database provided by an energy utility that is using this innovative system, the algorithm automatically forecasts the number of SOs that will need to be executed in each location in several time steps (hourly, monthly and yearly basis). The forecasted emergency SOs demand, which is related to energy outages, are stochastically distributed, projecting the impacted consumers and its individual interruption indexes. This spatio-temporal forecasting is the main input for a web-based platform for optimal bases allocation, field team sizing and scheduling implemented in the eleven distribution utilities of Energisa group in Brazil.

CFD Modelling of the Thermal Performance of Fruit Packaging Boxes—Influence of Vent-Holes Design
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD modelling, fruit packaging boxes, thermal performance, vent-holes design
The shelf life of perishable products depends mainly on the conservation of air temperature. Packaging boxes are usually used to accommodate food products during cold storage and transport and/or display. The design of the vent-holes of the packaging box must promote cold airflow and remove the field heat of the produce after harvest at a short time. This study describes the influence of the vent-holes design and its performance during cold storage. The cooling performance of the different packaging boxes is evaluated experimentally and numerically using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Three new packaging box configurations with the same size but different vent-holes design (size, shape and position) and a reference box are modelled. The transient three-dimensional CFD model predicts the airflow pattern and temperature distribution within the different packaging boxes. The best thermal performance packaging achieved a fruit model temperature 1.5 K to 5 K lower than the other config... [more]

Factorisation Path Based Refactorisation for High-Performance LU Decomposition in Real-Time Power System Simulation
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: direct linear solvers, high-performance computing, matrix decomposition, power system simulation
The integration of renewable energy sources into modern power systems requires simulations with smaller step sizes, larger network models and the incorporation of complex nonlinear component models. These features make it more difficult to meet computation time requirements in real-time simulations and have motivated the development of high-performance LU decomposition methods. Since nonlinear component models cause numerical variations in the system matrix between simulation steps, this paper places a particular focus on the recomputation of LU decomposition, i.e., on the refactorisation step. The main contribution is the adoption of a factorisation path algorithm for partial refactorisation, which takes into account that only a subset of matrix entries change their values. The approach is integrated into the modern LU decomposition method NICSLU and benchmarked against the methods SuperLU and KLU. A performance analysis was carried out considering benchmark as well as real power syst... [more]

Forecasting Brazilian Ethanol Spot Prices Using LSTM
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: commodity price, LSTM, MAPE, MSE, price prediction, Random Forest, SVM, trend prediction
Ethanol is one of the most used fuels in Brazil, which is the second-largest producer of this biofuel in the world. The uncertainty of price direction in the future increases the risk for agents operating in this market and can affect a dependent price chain, such as food and gasoline. This paper uses the architecture of recurrent neural networks—Long short-term memory (LSTM)—to predict Brazilian ethanol spot prices for three horizon-times (12, 6 and 3 months ahead). The proposed model is compared to three benchmark algorithms: Random Forest, SVM Linear and RBF. We evaluate statistical measures such as MSE (Mean Squared Error), MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error), and accuracy to assess the algorithm robustness. Our findings suggest LSTM outperforms the other techniques in regression, considering both MSE and MAPE but SVM Linear is better to identify price trends. Concerning predictions per se, all errors increase during the pandemic period, reinforcing the challenge to identify patt... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: angle of inclination of the conveyor, batch volume of conveyed material, belt cleats, flat roller support of the belt, straight loading profile of the conveyor belt
The paper presents a methodology for determining the volume of a batch of conveyed material located before a transverse partition of a certain height and the distance over which the batch of material extends on the working surface of the conveyor belt along its longitudinal axis. Knowing the geometric dimensions of the transported batch of material makes it possible to appropriately set the spacing of the belt cleats and thereby to optimally determine the conveying performance of the inclined belt conveyor. When the angle of inclination of a conveyor with a straight idler frame is equal to the angle of surcharge of the conveyed material, then no layer of material is carried on the surface of the belt. If the conveyor belt is guided along a trough idler frame, only the lower cross-section of the filling of material is used. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: black-box model, driving mode, fuel consumption, gear, real traffic
Appropriate driving technique, in compliance with eco-driving principles, remains an effective method to reduce fuel consumption. The selection of the correct gear is one of the pertinent factors when driving a car with a manual gearbox. In this study we have analyzed fuel overconsumption based on data recorded in real traffic conditions for vehicles driven by experienced drivers, using a black-box model. It was found that the total share of trip time with a lower than optimal gear selected amounted to from c.a. 3% for motorway driving up to 28% on rural roads. The mean fuel consumption reduction factor (following selection of the next gear up) amounted to from c.a. 2% up to 20%, depending on the selected gear and type of driving. Unfortunately, the potential for reduction of fuel consumption is not evenly distributed over the entire operating area of the engine. Thus, the cumulative reduction of fuel consumption, due to selection of the optimal gear, amounted to from c.a. 0.2% for mot... [more]
