Gate Current in p-GaN Gate HEMTs as a Channel Temperature Sensitive Parameter: A Comparative Study between Schottky- and Ohmic-Gate GaN HEMTs
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: boost converter, GaN, gate driver, HEMT, Ohmic contact, p-GaN gate, Schottky contact, short circuit, TSEP
In this work, a comparison between the gate-driving requirements of p-GaN HEMTs with gate contact of Schottky and Ohmic type is presented. Furthermore, the presence of a gate current of different magnitude is experimentally verified for both types of devices. Successively, the possibility of using the gate current as a temperature-sensitive parameter and its monitoring during real circuit operation is proposed. The viability of monitoring the gate current without introducing additional complexity in the gate driver is examined through experimental measurements on commercially available p-GaN HEMTs.

Performance Analysis and Optimisation of a Solar On-Grid Air Conditioner
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, heat pump, PV, solar cooling
Solar-powered air conditioners offer a high potential for energy-efficient cooling with a high economic feasibility. They can significantly reduce the energy consumption in the building sector, which is essential to meet the greater ambition of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80% in the EU by 2050. This paper presents a computational model development capable of simulating the behaviour of a photovoltaic-assisted heat pump in different locations and working conditions. In addition, this model has been used to optimise a solar on-grid air conditioning system. The generated model has been validated with experimental data obtained in a real facility for a whole summer of operation (more than 100 tested days) in a Mediterranean climate (Alicante, Spain). According to the simulation results, the average Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of the system is 16.0, 10.7 and 7.8 in Barcelona, Madrid and Seville, respectively. The optimisation analysis has proven that the severity of the climatic... [more]

On the Relationship between Oil and Exchange Rates of Oil-Exporting and Oil-Importing Countries: From the Great Recession Period to the COVID-19 Era
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: correlation analysis, currency exchange rate, oil exporters, oil prices, structural breaks
This paper is dedicated to studying and modeling the interdependence between the oil returns and exchange-rate movements of oil-exporting and oil-importing countries. Globally, twelve countries/regions are investigated, representing more than 60% and 67% of all oil exports and imports. The sample period encompasses economic and natural events like the Great Recession period (2007−2009) and the COVID-19 pandemic. We use the dynamic conditional correlation mixed-data sampling (DCC-MIDAS) model, with the aim of investigating the interdependencies expressed by the long-run correlation, which is a smoother (but always daily observed) version of the (daily) time-varying correlation. Focusing on the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the long-run correlations of the oil-exporting countries (Saudia Arabia, Russia, Iraq, Canada, United States, United Arab Emirates, and Nigeria) and (lagged) WTI crude oil returns strongly increase. For a subset of these countries (that is, Saudia Arabia, I... [more]

Attitudes of Communities in Rural Areas towards the Development of Wind Energy
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: renewable energy sources, Sustainability, wind energy
The objective of the study was to demonstrate attitudes towards wind energy facilities in the area of the Korsze Commune. The results of the study were processed using structure indices calculated from the respondents’ answers, which were analyzed in terms of social and economic factors. The study revealed that both the NIMBY syndrome and the lack of civic engagement influence attitudes towards renewable energy technologies in rural areas. The NIMBY (“not in my backyard”) term describes negative public attitudes towards proposed development projects. However, some trends towards more pronounced attitudes can be observed, depending on socioeconomic conditions. The research results imply that the measures taken to promote renewable energy technologies should be designed differently depending on the socioeconomic situation of the targeted audience. Young people might be reached via social media appropriate to their age, and through campaigns promoting local investments. For older people,... [more]

Selection of Underground Hydrogen Storage Risk Assessment Techniques
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: analytical hierarchy method, risk assessment, underground hydrogen storage
The article proposes the use of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method to select a risk assessment technique associated with underground hydrogen storage. The initial choosing and ranking of risk assessment techniques can be considered as a multi-criteria decision problem. The usage of a decision model based on six criteria is proposed. A ranking of methods for estimating the risks associated with underground hydrogen storage is presented. The obtained results show that the application of the AHP-based approach may be a useful tool for selecting the UHS risk assessment technique. The proposed method makes it possible to make an objective decision of the most satisfactory approach, from the point of view of all the adopted decision criteria, regarding the selection of the best risk assessment technique.

Performance Analysis of Commercial Passive Balancing Battery Management System Operation Using a Hardware-in-the-Loop Testbed
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery modeling, charge equalization, HIL simulation, lithium-ion battery, OPAL-RT, orion battery management system
With increased usage, individual batteries within the battery pack will begin to show disparate voltage and State of Charge (SOC) profiles, which will impact the time at which batteries become balanced. Commercial battery management systems (BMSs), used in electric vehicles (EVs) and microgrids, typically send out signals suggesting removal of individual batteries or entire packs to prevent thermal runaway scenarios. To reuse these batteries, this paper presents an analysis of an off-the-shelf Orion BMS with a constrained cycling approach to assess the voltage and SOC balancing and thermal performances of such near-to-second life batteries. A scaled-down pack of series-connected batteries in 6s1p and 6s2p topologies are cycled through a combination of US06 drive and constant charge (CC) profiles using an OPAL-RT real-time Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulator. These results are compared with those obtained from the Matlab/Simulink model to present the error incurred in the simulation en... [more]

Movers and Shakers: Stock Market Response to Induced Seismicity in Oil and Gas Business
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: event study, financial value, induced seismicity, oil and gas majors, stock market
Investors increasingly need to account for concerns about non-financial performance and to consider the environmental impact of fossil fuel investment. We analyze how financial investors appreciate induced seismicity in oil and gas fields in the US and the Netherlands. We employ an event study to investigate the stock market reaction of investors in two fossil fuel majors, ExxonMobil and Royal Dutch Shell. We establish that stock market participants’ response is positively but weakly related to induced seismicity with ExxonMobil. This suggests that markets might interpret this seismicity as a signal of future productivity. With Royal Dutch Shell, there is no significant association, suggesting that their investors do not specifically appreciate its externalities. We conclude that the externality of induced seismicity goes unpriced.

A Combined RMS Simulation Model for DFIG-Based and FSC-Based Wind Turbines and Its Initialization
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DFIG, doubly fed induction generator, fast frequency response, FSC, full-scale convertor, RMS model initialization, RMS simulation, synthetic inertia, wind turbine model
Reconstructable dynamic simulation models of modern variable-speed wind turbines (WTs), which are integrable into any simulation software, are crucial to the scientists investigating the contribution of WTs to counteracting the current power system stability issues. The structural similarity between a doubly fed induction-generator-based (DFIG-based) WT model and a full-scale-convertor-based (FSC-based) WT model using induction generator offers the possibility of integrating them into a combined modular model with little effort and the same used parameter set. This article presents a combined root mean square (RMS) WT model, which contains a DFIG-based WT and a FSC-based WT using induction generator. The model is designed based on fundamental machine and converter equations and can be applied for classical network stability analyses. Furthermore, analogous well-performing initialization procedures for both DFIG-based and FSC-based WT models are also introduced. As an example, to demons... [more]

A Feasibility Study on Effect of Food Waste Leachate Additions in the Full-Scale Waste Leachate Treatment Facility after the African Swine Fever Outbreak in South Korea
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biogas, food waste leachate, methane production, sewage sludge
Due to the ban on the use of food waste as wet swine feed after the outbreak of African swine fever (ASF), 2900 tons/day of food waste and 1083 tons/day of food waste leachate were additionally generated. As an alternative treatment method for food waste leachate, the input of food waste leachate on weekends (5% of food waste leachate inflow, 100 tons/day) and its increased input (merge ratio 21.7%, 227.01 tons/day → 27.8%, 453.71 tons/day) into the digesters operated in a public sewage treatment plant were investigated. Additionally, the feasibility of the method was evaluated by analyzing the operation parameters, evaluating the operation efficiency, and identifying other environmental effects on the sewage treatment plant. In the case of input on weekends, the organic matter decomposition rate and gas production rate decreased by 8.0% and 9.5%, respectively, although the input on weekends was judged to be feasible, considering that the inflow into the WWTP increased by up to 206% du... Peak Power of Heat Source for Domestic Hot Water Preparation (DHW) for Residential Estate in Poland as a Representative Case Study for the Climate of Central Europe
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DHW, domestic hot water, energy performance of buildings, energy transformation, peak power
Due to the energy transformation in buildings, the proportions of energy consumption for heating, ventilation and domestic hot water preparation (DHW) have changed. The latter component can now play a significant role, not only in the context of the annual heat demand, but also in the context of selecting the peak power of the heat source. In this paper, the comparison of chosen methods for its calculation is presented. The results show that for contemporary residential buildings, the peak power for DHW preparation can achieve the same or higher value as the peak power for heating and ventilation. For this reason, nowadays the correct selection of the peak power of a heat source for DHW purposes becomes more important, especially if it uses renewable energy sources, because it affects its size and so the investment cost and economic efficiency. It is also indicated that in modern buildings, mainly accumulative systems with hot water storage tanks should be taken into account because th... [more]

Energy Savings Resulting from Using a Near-Surface Earth-to-Air Heat Exchanger for Precooling in Hot Desert Climates
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), electricity savings, energy savings, ground cooling, precooling, transient simulations
Given the substantial energy use for space cooling in buildings, integrating energy-efficient and sustainable cooling systems into buildings has become increasingly more important. Even though the cooling potential of a near-surface earth-to-air heat exchanger (EAHE) with grass cover was demonstrated in previous studies, the energy savings and environmental benefits resulting from using the EAHE have not yet been quantified. Therefore, in this study, we quantify the energy savings resulting from using a near-surface earth-to-air heat exchanger (EAHE) with grass-covered ground as a precooling unit in hot desert climates. The outlet air conditions of the EAHE during 9 months of the year (March to November), where space cooling is required, are predicted using a 3D transient CFD model, which is validated against field measurements. The EAHE is fabricated from a 1 mm thick aluminum tube with a diameter of 0.15 m and a length of 21.5 m, buried 0.4 m deep. The results showed that the EAHE ca... [more]

Blockchain and Internet of Things for Electrical Energy Decentralization: A Review and System Architecture
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Information Management
Keywords: blockchain, energy decentralization, Internet of Things, prosumer, smart contract
The decentralization in the electrical power grids has gained increasing importance, especially in the last two decades, since transmission system operators (TSO), distribution system operators (DSO) and consumers are more aware of energy efficiency and energy sustainability issues. Therefore, globally, due to the introduction of energy production technologies near the consumers, in residential and industrial sectors, new scenarios of distributed energy resources (DER) are emerging. In order to guarantee an adequate power management in the electrical power grids, incorporating producers, consumers and producers-consumers (prosumers) together, it is important to adopt intelligent systems and platforms that allow the provision of information on energy consumption and production in real time, as well as for obtaining a fair price for the sale and purchase of energy. In this paper, we analyze the literature to identify the appropriate solutions to implement a decentralized electrical power... [more]

Electrochemical Properties of Pristine and Vanadium Doped LiFePO4 Nanocrystallized Glasses
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cathode materials, glassy analogs, gravimetric capacity, Li-ion batteries, thermal nanocrystallization
In our recent papers, it was shown that the thermal nanocrystallization of glassy analogs of selected cathode materials led to a substantial increase in electrical conductivity. The advantage of this technique is the lack of carbon additive during synthesis. In this paper, the electrochemical performance of nanocrystalline LiFePO4 (LFP) and LiFe0.88V0.08PO4 (LFVP) cathode materials was studied and compared with commercially purchased high-performance LiFePO4 (C-LFP). The structure of the nanocrystalline materials was confirmed using X-ray diffractometry. The laboratory cells were tested at a wide variety of loads ranging from 0.1 to 3 C-rate. Their performance is discussed with reference to their microstructure and electrical conductivity. LFP exhibited a modest electrochemical performance, while the gravimetric capacity of LFVP reached ca. 100 mAh/g. This value is lower than the theoretical capacity, probably due to the residual glassy matrix in which the nanocrystallites are embedded... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: China, economic growth, financial development, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Developing energy from renewable sources and modernizing the energy system are critical components of China’s efforts to combat climate change. Policymakers and authorities have made significant attempts to bring them. However, one of the major impediments to China’s energy revolution is financial limitations, which are inextricably linked to the country’s economic growth. The present research paper intends to investigate the relationship between economic growth and sustainable financial development on the use of energy from renewable sources in both the short and long run in the context of China. To achieve this, the researchers have utilized the panel data consisting of 10 years from 2011 to 2020. When compared to cross-sectional and time-series data samples, the panel data model offers many benefits. For starters, the panel data includes information on the passage of time and the cross-sectional area. Another benefit of using panel-data models with a larger degree of freedom is that... [more]

A Deep Learning-Based Approach for Generation Expansion Planning Considering Power Plants Lifetime
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: bidirectional LSTM, deep learning, generation expansion planning (GEP), lifetime, Planning, power system
In Generation Expansion Planning (GEP), the power plants lifetime is one of the most important factors which to the best knowledge of the authors, has not been investigated in the literature. In this article, the power plants lifetime effect on GEP is investigated. In addition, the deep learning-based approaches are widely used for time series forecasting. Therefore, a new version of Long short-term memory (LSTM) networks known as Bi-directional LSTM (BLSTM) networks are used in this paper to forecast annual peak load of the power system. For carbon emissions, the cost of carbon is considered as the penalty of pollution in the objective function. The proposed approach is evaluated by a test network and then applied to Iran power system as a large-scale grid. The simulations by GAMS (General Algebraic Modeling System, Washington, DC, USA) software show that due to consideration of lifetime as a constraint, the total cost of the GEP problem decreases by 5.28% and 7.9% for the test system...
