Design and Implementation of an Electric Skibus Line in North Italy
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: bus charging infrastructure, electric bus, energy bus consumption, public transport electrification, transportation
To enhance the current Public Transport (PT) service in the northern Italian region of Lombardy, this work tries to plan fully a new electric Skibus line connecting the cities of Santa Caterina and Livigno. As a first try outside the city environment, the electrification study is set on a limited mountain zone hence featured by steep grades and cold temperatures. In the first part of the paper, the energy consumed by an electric bus working in such a context is assessed, and from the learned outcomes, proper charging infrastructure is proposed. From the found results, the introduction of a new electric bus line in the chosen region seems feasible. Finally, in the last part of the work the performances of an electric bus fleet are compared with that of a diesel one, in terms of fuel costs and Well-to-Wheel (WTW) emissions. The results prove that an electric fleet would be more convenient for both the economic and the environmental aspects.

Optimal Portfolio Selection Methodology for a Demand Response Aggregator
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: aggregator, consumer behavior, contract portfolio, demand response, demand side management
This paper presents a methodology for determining the optimal portfolio allocation for a demand response aggregator. The formulation is based on Day-Ahead electricity prices, in which the aggregator coordinates a set of residential consumers that are recruited through contracts. Four types of contracts are analyzed, considering both direct and indirect demand response programs. The objective is to compare different scenarios for contract portfolios in order to establish the benefits of each market agent. An optimization problem is formulated to capture the interactions between the aggregator and end consumers. The model is formulated as a mathematical program with equilibrium constraints: At the upper level, the aggregator maximizes its benefits, whereas the lower level represents the consumers’ contracts. By applying the developed methodology, the characterization of the consumers’ behavior is established in order to forecast their responses to the generation of punctual incentives, b... [more]

Real-Time Approximate Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy Based on the Single-Shaft Parallel Hybrid Powertrain
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: approximate-ECMS, computational load, DPSO-GA, real-time energy management strategy, single-shaft parallel hybrid powertrain
Real-time energy management strategy (EMS) plays an important role in reducing fuel consumption and maintaining power for the hybrid electric vehicle. However, real-time optimization control is difficult to implement due to the computational load in an instantaneous moment. In this paper, an Approximate equivalent consumption minimization strategy (Approximate-ECMS) is presented for real-time optimization control based on single-shaft parallel hybrid powertrain. The quadratic fitting of the engine fuel consumption rate and the single-axle structure characteristics of the vehicle make the fitness function transformed into a cubic function based on ECMS for solving. The candidate solutions are thus obtained to distribute torque and the optimal distribution is got from the candidate solutions. The results show that the equivalent fuel consumption of Approximate-ECMS was 7.135 L/km by 17.55% improvement compared with Rule-ECMS in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 emission reduction, control strategy, off-design operation, offshore heat, process modelling and simulation, thermal efficiency
Power cycles on offshore oil and gas installations are expected to operate more at varied load conditions, especially when rapid growth in renewable energies puts them in a load-following operation. Part-load efficiency enhancement is advantageous since heat to power cycles suffer poor efficiency at part loads. The overall purpose of this article is to improve part-load efficiency in offshore combined cycles. Here, the organic Rankine bottoming cycle with a control strategy based on variable geometry turbine technology is studied to boost part-load efficiency. The Variable Area Nozzle turbine is selected to control cycle mass flow rate and pressure ratio independently. The design and performance of the proposed working strategy are assessed by an in-house developed tool. With the suggested solution, the part-load organic Rankine cycle efficiency is kept close to design value outperforming the other control strategies with sliding pressure, partial admission turbine, and throttling valv... High Dispersion of CeO2 on CeO2/MgO Prepared under Dry Conditions and Its Improved Redox Properties
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: CeO2, Dry Reforming, heterogeneous catalysis, in situ XRD, MgO
Suppressing the usage of rare-earth elements is crucial for making the catalysts sustainable. Preparing CeO2 nanoparticles is a common technique to reduce CeO2 consumption, but such nanoparticles are prone to sinter or react with the supports when subjected to heat treatments. This study demonstrated that stable CeO2 nanoparticles were deposited on MgO by the simple impregnation method. When CeO2/MgO was prepared under the dry atmosphere, the CeO2 nanoparticles remained ~3 nm in diameter even after being heated at 800 °C, which is much smaller than ~5 nm of CeO2/MgO prepared under ambient air. Temperature-programmed reduction, temperature-programmed oxidation, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and in situ X-ray diffraction studies showed that CeO2/MgO exhibited higher oxygen mobility when prepared under the dry atmosphere. Dry reforming reaction demonstrated that CeO2/MgO prepared under the dry atmosphere exhibited higher activity than that prepared under ambient air and pure CeO2.

Isolated Areas Consumption Short-Term Forecasting Method
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Hidden Markov Model, short-term forecast, time series
Forecasting consumption in isolated areas represents a challenging problem typically resolved using deep learning or huge mathematical models with various dimensions. Those models require expertise in metering and algorithms and the equipment needs to be frequently maintained. In the context of the MAESHA H2020 project, most of the consumers and producers are isolated. Forecasting becomes more difficult due to the lack of external data and the significant impact of human behaviors on those small systems. The proposed approach is based on data sequencing, sequential mining, and pattern mining to infer the results into a Hidden Markov Model. It only needs the consumption and production curve as a time series and adapts itself to provide the forecast. Our method gives a better forecast than other prediction machines and deep-learning methods used in literature review.

Experimental Investigation on the Performance and Emission Characteristics of a Compression Ignition Engine Using Waste-Based Tire Pyrolysis Fuel and Diesel Fuel Blends
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: diesel engine, emissions, tire pyrolysis oil, waste based fuel
Due to the world’s growing population, the size of areas intended for food production in many countries of the world can only be achieved through severe environmental damage and deforestation, which has many other detrimental consequences in addition to accelerating global warming. By replacing the bio-content of fuels with other alternative fuels, land that is used for energy crops can also be used to grow food, thus mitigating the damaging effects of deforestation. Waste-based tire pyrolysis oil (TPO) can be a promising solution to replace the bio-proportion of diesel fuel. Since it is made from waste tires, it is also an optimal solution for recycling waste. This research shows the effect of different low-volume-percent tire pyrolyzed oil blended with diesel on the performance, fuel consumption, and emissions on a Mitsubishi S4S-DT industrial diesel engine. Four different premixed ratios of TPO were investigated (2.5%, 5%, 7.5% and 10%) as well as pyrolysis oil and 100% diesel oil;... [more]

A Unified Controller for Multi-State Operation of the Bi-Directional Buck−Boost DC-DC Converter
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: bidirectional DC-DC converter, DC microgrids, energy storage systems, feedback linearization, multi-variable control
DC grid interfaces for supercapacitors (SCs) are expected to operate with a wide range of input voltages with fast dynamics. The class-C DC-DC converter is commonly used in this application because of its simplicity. However, it does not work if the output voltage (V2) becomes smaller than the input voltage (V1). The non-isolated bi-directional Buck−Boost DC-DC converter does not have this limitation. Its two half-bridges provide a means for controlling the power flow operating in the conventional dual-state mode, as well as multi-state, tri, and quad modes. These can be used for mitigating issues such as the Right Half Plane (RHP) zero that has a negative impact on the dynamic response of the system. Multi-state operation typically requires multi-variable control, which is not easy to realize with conventional PI-type controllers. This paper proposes a unified controller for multi-state operation. It employs a carrier-based modulation scheme with three modulation signals that allows t... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cooling, heat transfer, NOVEC, pool boiling, system stability, temperatures evolution, thermosyphon, transient behavior
Currently, the growing need for efficient refrigeration resources in the industrial sector has led to an increasing interest in finding technologies with a higher heat removal potential and better cooling performance. Along these lines, two-phase liquid cooling appears to be a very interesting solution, with the CLTPT (closed-loop two-phase thermosyphon) being one of the leading alternatives. Most works in the scientific literature study loop thermosyphons that work in flow boiling conditions in steady state. The present paper analyzes the transient thermal behavior of a pool boiling CLTPT gravitational channel as a passive cooling system using NOVEC 649 as working fluid. The evaporator works with two submerged cylindrical heaters that represent different heat sources located in different positions. The initial transient behavior and consequent instabilities of a laboratory-scale facility were studied, followed by a stability analysis for various power inputs. Parameters such as temper... [more]

Spread Analysis of the Sustainability-Linked Bonds Tied to an Issuer’s Greenhouse Gases Emissions Reduction Target
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: ESG, green bonds, greenium, KPI, SLBs, spread, sustainability-linked bonds, sustainable finance, Tesco
Sustainability-Linked Bonds (SLBs) are a new type of general corporate purpose bond in which payments are tied to an issuer’s sustainability key performance indicators (KPIs) with respect to the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria. The structure is complementary to green bonds. The Tesco SLBs are linked to the firm’s ability to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 60%. The priority is to reduce its reliance on nonrenewable grid electricity, which contributed 65% of Tesco’s global carbon emissions footprint. Tesco accounts for 1% of electricity demand in the UK. Failure to meet the goals will result in a coupon step-up by 25 basis points on the last three coupons. The aim of our study is to investigate the presence of, how we call it ‘ESG spread’, marked by negative yield difference between SLB and regular bonds. It is something similar to ‘greenium’, that is, a premium paid by bondholders for green bonds when compared to nongreen bonds. We compare the bid and ask yields... [more]

Estimation of Stress-Strength Reliability for Multicomponent System with Rayleigh Data
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: asymptotic theory, generalized pivotal estimation, likelihood estimation, multicomponent stress-strength model, rayleigh distribution
Inference is investigated for a multicomponent stress-strength reliability (MSR) under Type-II censoring when the latent failure times follow two-parameter Rayleigh distribution. With a context that the lifetimes of the strength and stress variables have common location parameters, maximum likelihood estimator of MSR along with the existence and uniqueness is established. The associated approximate confidence interval is provided via the asymptotic distribution theory and delta method. Meanwhile, alternative generalized pivotal quantities-based point and confidence interval estimators are also constructed for MSR. More generally, when the lifetimes of strength and stress variables follow Rayleigh distributions with unequal location parameters, likelihood and generalized pivotal-based estimators are provided for MSR as well. In addition, to compare the equivalence of different strength and stress parameters, a likelihood ratio test is provided. Finally, simulation studies and a real dat... [more]

Oil Pressure Monitoring for Sealing Failure Detection and Diagnosis of Power Transformer Bushing
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: insulation oil, pressure, sealing condition, temperature, transformer bushing
Power transformer bushings withstand great electrical and mechanical stress during high voltage and high current working conditions. Sealing failure poses a great threat to the long-term and reliable operation of the bushing and power transformer; however, the criterion to evaluate the sealing status of a bushing caused by mechanical problems is still lacking. In this paper, a transformer bushing model is established to gain theoretical insight into the relationship between temperature and pressure of a compact multilayer bushing. To evaluate the bushing mechanical status, different sealing conditions are tested based on the temperature and pressure monitoring within the physical 110 kV bushing. The results show that mechanical sealing failure can be diagnosed when the fluctuation of the oil pressure value exceeds the theoretical curve in steady state by 3 kPa. With different reliability coefficients, gas leakage and oil leakage are available to be further determined. The primary and a... [more]

The DC microgrid is an important structure of microgrids. Aiming at the problem of the grid-connected DC microgrid modeling, a grid-connected DC microgrid equivalent modeling method based on the optimized Broad Learning System (BLS) is proposed. Taking the electrical parameter data of the grid-connected DC microgrid access point as the training data set of BLS, the equivalent model of the grid-connected equivalent model is constructed. In order to further improve the accuracy and generalization performance of the model, the shark smell optimization (SSO) algorithm is used to optimize the input weights and thresholds of the BLS. Furthermore, the shark smell optimization-Broad Learning System (SSO-BLS) algorithm is proposed. SSO-BLS is compared with RBF, BLS, BFO-ELM, and other algorithms. The results show that the grid-connected DC microgrid model based on SSO-BLS has good accuracy and generalization characteristics.

Optimal N Application Rates on Switchgrass for Producers and a Biorefinery
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ash content, biorefinery, farmer, optimal nitrogen, switchgrass
This study analyzes the effects of N fertilizer application rates on profitability of growing switchgrass and using the feedstock in a pyrolysis biorefinery facility to create a source of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply in Tennessee. Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is a perennial bunchgrass native to North America with traits suitable for biofuel and co-product production. Previous chemical analysis has shown that ash content in switchgrass is related to the amount of nitrogen applied to the field, while at the biorefinery level, the percentage ash content reduces the biorefinery fuel output. To obtain optimal nitrogen (N) application rates for the switchgrass producers and the biorefinery, a two-part analysis is employed. First, a partial budgeting profitability analysis is conducted for this cropping enterprise at the farm-gate level without considering downstream implications of biomass quality, i.e., ash content. Second, the effects of higher ash content as a percentage of... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, household energy consumption, rebound effect, renewable generation
Reducing household energy consumption is one of the most important strategies used to decrease fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gases emissions, and to encourage renewable energy utilization. Most energy conservation strategies in the domestic sector are aimed at preferential loans, i.e., purchasing renewable electricity or to improve the efficiency of home appliances, such as air conditioning and lighting. However, despite the relative economic successes of these technologies, they have not had expected impacts in regard to energy consumption. In this work, the authors analyzed the consumption patterns of two equivalent households—one was adapted with improved thermal insulation and a 1.2 kW photovoltaic system to reduce consumption from the electrical grid. The results show that dwellings where no improvements were made registered lower electric energy consumption, due the fact that users were aware that no strategy had been implemented, and its consumption; hence, electricity... Numerical Investigation of Transient Flow Characteristics in a Centrifugal Compressor Stage with Variable Inlet Guide Vanes at Low Mass Flow Rates
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: centrifugal compressor stage, modal decomposition, positive pre-swirl, unstable flow, variable inlet guide vanes
This study numerically investigates the beneficial effects of positive pre-swirl on the aerodynamic performance and internal flow field in a centrifugal compressor stage with variable inlet guide vanes (VIGVs) at low mass flow rates. Four positions of VIGV are considered, including 0°, 30°, 45°, and 60° angle. The latter three positions of VIGV induce positive pre-swirl. Numerical results show that as positive pre-swirl increases, the aerodynamic performance curve of the stage moves in the low mass flow rate direction. In the three cases of positive pre-swirl, there was an improvement of approximately 9.95% of stall/surge margin greater than in conditions with no pre-swirl. The regulation of IGV can effectively improve the unstable flow of the compressor stage at low mass flow rates. A low frequency that has a great influence on the internal flow of the compressor stage is found, and the unstable flow caused by low frequency is analyzed by the combination of streamline distribution, sp... Behavioral Modeling Paradigm for DC Nanogrid Based Distributed Energy Systems
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: behavioral modeling, direct current (dc) nanogrid, distributed energy systems, power electronic converters, renewable energy sources, system identification
The remarkable progress of power electronic converters (PEC) technology has led to their increased penetration in distributed energy systems (DES). Particularly, the direct current (dc) nanogrid-based DES embody a variety of sources and loads, connected through a central dc bus. Therefore, PECs are required to be employed as an interface. It would facilitate incorporation of the renewable energy sources and battery storage system into dc nanogrids. However, it is more challenging as the integration of multiple modules may cause instabilities in the overall system dynamics. Future dc nanogrids are envisioned to deploy ready-to-use commercial PEC, for which designers have no insight into their dynamic behavior. Furthermore, the high variability of the operating conditions constitute a new paradigm in dc nanogrids. It exacerbates the dynamic analysis using traditional techniques.
