Pitch Control of Three Bladed Large Wind Energy Converters—A Review
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: active damping control, collective pitch control, control in full load operation, gain scheduling, individual pitch control, load reduction, multi-controller parametrization
Modern multi-megawatt wind turbines are currently designed as pitch-regulated machines, i.e., machines that use the rotation of the blades (pitching) in order to adjust the aerodynamic torque, such that the power is maintained constantly throughout a wide range of wind speeds when they exceed the design value (rated wind speed). Thus, pitch control is essential for optimal performance. However, the pitching activity is not for free. It introduces vibrations to the tower and blades and generates fatigue loads. Hence, pitch control requires a compromise between wind turbine performance and safety. In the past two decades, many approaches have been proposed to achieve different objectives and to overcome the problems of a wind energy converter using pitch control. The present work summarizes control strategies for problem of wind turbines, which are solved by using different approaches of pitch control. The emphasis is placed on the bibliographic information, but the merits and demerits o... [more]

Three-Dimensional Unsteady Aerodynamic Analysis of a Rigid-Framed Delta Kite Applied to Airborne Wind Energy
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: aerodynamic coefficients, airborne wind energy system, estimation before modeling, vortex lattice method
The validity of using a low-computational-cost model for the aerodynamic characterization of Airborne Wind Energy Systems was studied by benchmarking a three-dimensional Unsteady Panel Method (UnPaM) with experimental data from a flight test campaign of a two-line Rigid-Framed Delta kite. The latter, and a subsequent analysis of the experimental data, provided the evolution of the tether tensions, the full kinematic state of the kite (aerodynamic velocity and angular velocity vectors, among others), and its aerodynamic coefficients. The history of the kinematic state was used as input for UnPaM that provided a set of theoretical aerodynamic coefficients. Disparate conclusions were found when comparing the experimental and theoretical aerodynamic coefficients. For a wide range of angles of attack and sideslip angles, the agreement in the lift and lateral force coefficients was good and moderate, respectively, considering UnPaM is a potential flow tool. As expected, UnPaM predicts a much... [more]

Application of Electrical Tomography Imaging Using Machine Learning Methods for the Monitoring of Flood Embankments Leaks
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: elastic net, electrical tomography, image reconstruction, Machine Learning, PCA, sensors, wave preprocessing
This paper presents an application for the monitoring of leaks in flood embankments by reconstructing images in electrical tomography using logistic regression machine learning methods with elastic net regularisation, PCA and wave preprocessing. The main advantage of this solution is to obtain a more accurate spatial conductivity distribution inside the studied object. The described method assumes a learning system consisting of multiple equations working in parallel, where each equation creates a single point in the output image. This enables the efficient reconstruction of spatial images. The research focused on preparing, developing, and comparing algorithms and models for data analysis and reconstruction using a proprietary electrical tomography solution. A reliable measurement solution with sensors and machine learning methods makes it possible to analyse damage and leaks, leading to effective information and the eventual prevention of risks. The applied methods enable the improve... [more]

Numerical Investigations on the Damage Behaviour of a Reconstructed Anode for Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Application
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: damage behaviour, failure mechanisms, FIB tomography, Ni-YSZ, SOFC
This paper addresses the damage behaviour of a nickel/yttria-stabilised zirconia (Ni-YSZ) anode, in order to understand microstructural degradation processes of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) during long-term operation. Numerical investigations are carried out to analyse the failure mechanisms in detail. For this purpose, finite element (FE) models are generated from focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy 3D image data, representing the anode microstructure with varying phase compositions. A brittle model and a ductile material model were assigned to the YSZ phase and the nickel phase, respectively. The porosity is found to affect the strength of the microstructure significantly, leading to low compressive strength results. A high Ni content generally increases the toughness of the overall structure. However, the orientation and the geometry of the nickel phase is essential. When the Ni phase is aligned parallel to the loading direction, a supporting effect on the microstructure... [more]

Experimental Research on the Law of Energy Conversion during CO2 Sequestration in Coal
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adsorption model, CO2 sequestration, Energy Conversion, particle size, temperature
CO2 sequestration in coal is mainly attributed to adsorption. The adsorption experiments of CO2 were conducted at injection pressures ranging from 1 to 3 MPa on coal samples with five kinds of particle sizes. The fitting degree of four classical adsorption models to experimental adsorption data was systematically compared. The adsorption properties of CO2 were comprehensively discussed. The temperature changes of coal samples at different positions during CO2 adsorption were measured by using the improved adsorption tank, and then the energy conversion law was obtained. The results showed increasing gas injection pressure can effectively increase the adsorption capacity of CO2 on coal samples. The BET equation had the best fitting accuracy for CO2 adsorption on various size coal samples. There was a significant exothermic effect during CO2 adsorption and storage. With the rise of injection pressure, the peak value of the rising temperature of coal samples increased, but the change rate... [more]

Application of Time-Voltage Characteristics in Overcurrent Scheme to Reduce Arc-Flash Incident Energy for Safety and Reliability of Microgrid Protection
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: arc flash, distribution network, microgrid, optimization techniques, protection coordination
The interconnection between diverse Distribution Generations (DGs) that utilize various technologies and complex structure of networks are the most characteristic of modern Distribution Networks (DN). The wide adoption of DGs considerably affects the power flow dynamics in the DN and consequently the fault characteristics. The excessive level of fault currents can pose risks of heat (high temperature) and pressure in accordance to Arc Flash (AF) incident energy in microgrids. This research studies the relationship between AF severity and the solving of coordination problem of Overcurrent Relays (OCRs) in DN, and introduces a novel equation that considers the AF qualities in solving the coordination problem for OCRs. In this study, a novel optimization problem, the AF severity with the optimal coordination of OCRs in DN is presented and the Water Cycle Optimization Method (WCOM) is employed to find the best combination of the OCR’s settings in the DN while considering the AF induced ene... March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: animal wastes, co-firing, combustion, dairy biomass, NOx reduction, reburn, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Concentrated animal feeding operations (both slaughter and dairy cattle) lead to land, water, and air pollution if waste storage and handling systems are not effectively managed. At the same time, cattle biomass (CB), which includes both slaughter/feedlot biomass (FB) and dairy biomass (DB), have the potential to be a source of green energy at coal-fired power plants. Part I presented results on NOx reductions with pure FB or Coal: FB blends as reburn fuels. Part II deals with results from reburning with pure DB or Coal: DB blends as reburn fuels. A mixture of NG with a small amount of NH3 was used to generate the baseline NOx of 400−420 ppm (or 185−194 g/GJ). NOx emissions were found to be reduced by as much as 96% when reburning with FB. The effects of reburn fuel type, equivalence ratio (ERRBZ) in the reburn zone, vitiated air, several injection configurations of reburn fuel and initial NO concentrations on NOx emissions were investigated. Design and Implementation of Periodic Control for a Matrix Converter-Based Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Drive System
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: digital signal processor, matrix converter, periodic controllers
The matrix converter-based IPMSM drive has 360 Hz virtual DC-bus voltage variations which produce severe stator harmonic currents. To solve this problem, a speed-loop classical periodic controller and two current-loop periodic controllers, including a classical periodic controller and a selective harmonic controller, are proposed in this paper. By using the proposed methods, the harmonic currents are obviously reduced and the speed responses of the IPMSM are clearly improved. A detailed analysis is discussed. A digital signal processor, type SH7237, manufactured by Renesas Electronics Corporation is used for the control algorithms. Experimental results show that those proposed periodic controllers reduce up to nearly 32% of the total harmonic distortion at the stator currents, and also apparently improve the transient, tracking, and repetitive load disturbance speed responses.

Keywords: biochar, elemental composition, gas-phase products, heat of combustion, heating medium temperature, nut shell, pyrolysis
The process of slow pyrolysis of seven nut shell samples, in a nitrogen-purged atmosphere, has been studied, as well as characteristics of biochar obtained. The heat carrier with a temperature of 400−600 °C (with a step of 100 °C) was supplied indirectly using a double-walled reactor. The heating rate was 60 °C/min. At increased temperature of the heating medium, a decrease in the amount of the resulting carbon residue averaged 6.2 wt%. The release of non-condensable combustible gas-phase compounds CO, CH4, and H2, with maximum concentrations of 12.7, 14.0, and 0.7 vol%, respectively, was registered. The features of the obtained biochar sample conversions were studied using thermal analysis in inert (nitrogen) and oxidative (air) mediums at 10 °C/min heating rate. Kinetic analysis was performed using Coats−Redfern method. Thermal analysis showed that the main weight loss (Δm = 32.8−43.0 wt%) occurs at temperatures ranging between 290 °C and 400 °C, which is due to cellulose decompositi... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Clarke, coal ash, coal gasification, critical raw materials, rare elements
In an effort to identify new sources of critical raw materials (CRMs) possibility of recovering selected CRMs from Polish coals, chars, and ashes resulting from the combustion of coals and chars was investigated. The samples were collected from pilot fluidized bed gasification systems. The search for CRMs in coal gasification wastes has not been widely reported before. The study used 2 bituminous coal and 1 lignite sample; the concentration of individual critical raw materials (CRMs) was analyzed using the ICP-MS method. The obtained results were compared with Clarke values in coal ash and in the Earth’s crust, and with the adopted cut-off grade. As shown by the analysis, the highest concentrations of CRMs can be found in fly ash, mainly in samples from the eastern part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. This applies mostly to Be, Cs, or Sb due to the fact that their concentrations were found to be higher than the Clarke value in the Earth’s crust; the mentioned fly ashes could be used... [more]

Grid-Scale Battery Energy Storage Operation in Australian Electricity Spot and Contingency Reserve Markets
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ancillary services, arbitrage, battery degradation, electricity markets, Energy Storage
Conventional fossil-fuel-based power systems are undergoing rapid transformation via the replacement of coal-fired generation with wind and solar farms. The stochastic and intermittent nature of such renewable sources demands alternative dispatchable technology capable of meeting system stability and reliability needs. Battery energy storage can play a crucial role in enabling the high uptake of wind and solar generation. However, battery life is very sensitive to the way battery energy storage systems (BESS) are operated. In this paper, we propose a framework to analyse battery operation in the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM) electricity spot and contingency reserve markets. We investigate battery operation in different states of Australia under various operating strategies. By considering battery degradation costs within the operating strategy, BESS can generate revenue from the energy market without significantly compromising battery life. March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: arctic region, COMSOL Multiphysics, Energy Storage, glass window, phase-change material, triple-glazing
This paper evaluates the thermal performance of a triple-glazed glass window filled with a phase-change material (PCM) compared to the performance of a traditional triple-glazed window with air gaps. The chosen PCM was paraffin wax. A mathematical model to simulate heat transfer within the system was presented. A commercially available software, COMSOL Multiphysics, was used to numerically solve the governing equations. The analysis was carried out for the representative days of different seasons using three types of paraffin wax (5, 10, and 15) that have different melting-temperature ranges. Particularly, the study considers the unique climatic conditions of the Arctic region. Results showed that by integrating a PCM into the cavity of triple-glazing, thermal performance during summer season of the window was enhanced, while for spring and autumn thermal performance was affected by the type of paraffin selected. The thermal performance of glass windows during winter did not change wit... [more]

Dielectric Strength of Polymeric Solid−Solid Interfaces under Dry-Mate and Wet-Mate Conditions
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cable insulation, contact surface, dielectric breakdown, electrical breakdown, polymeric insulation, solid–solid interface, surface roughness
One of the most important causes of insulation system failure is the breakdown of the interface between two solid dielectrics; understanding the mechanisms governing this breakdown phenomenon is therefore critical. To that end, investigating and reviewing the practical limitations of the electrical breakdown strength of solid−solid interfaces present in insulating components is the primary objective of this work. The published literature from experimental and theoretical studies carried out in order to scrutinize the effects of the presence of solid−solid interfaces is investigated and discussed, considering macro, micro, and nano-scale characteristics. The reviewed literature suggests that solid−solid interfaces in accessories have non-uniform distributions of electrical fields within them in comparison to cables, where the distribution is mostly radial and symmetrical. Many agree that the elastic modulus (elasticity), radial/tangential pressure, surface smoothness/roughness, and diel... [more]

Traffic Intersection Lane Control Using Radio Frequency Identification and 5G Communication
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: 5G, RFID, Smart City, traffic management
This article deals with automated urban traffic management, and proposes a new comprehensive infrastructure solution for dynamic traffic direction switching at intersection lines. It was assumed that the currently used solutions based on video monitoring are unreliable. Therefore, the Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) technique was introduced, in which vehicles are counted and, if necessary, identified in order to estimate the flows on individual lanes. The data is acquired in real time using fifth-generation wireless communications (5G). The Pots and Ising models derived from the theory of statistical physics were used in a novel way to determine the state of direction traffic lights. The models were verified by simulations using data collected from real traffic observations. The results were presented for two exemplary intersections.

Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis of a Variable-Length Pendulum Water Pump
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: excited parametric pendulum, harmonic response, pendulum water pump, piston assembling, variable length pendulum
Due to the long-term problem of electricity and potable water in most developing and undeveloped countries, predominantly rural areas, a novelty of the pendulum water pump, which uses a vertically excited parametric pendulum with variable-length using a sinusoidal excitation as a vibrating machine, is presented. With this, more oscillations can be achieved, reducing human effort further and having high output than the existing pendulum water pump with the conventional pendulum. The pendulum, lever, and piston assembly are modeled by a separate dynamical system and then joined into the many degrees-of-freedom dynamical systems. The present work includes friction while studying the system dynamics and then simulated to verify the system’s harmonic response. The study showed the effect of the pendulum length variability on the whole system’s performance. The vertically excited parametric pendulum with variable length in the system is established, giving faster and longer oscillations than... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: aggregated terms, centralised MPC, decentralised MPC, flexibility mechanisms, large-scale systems, Model Predictive Control
This paper aims to provide the smart grid research community with an open and accessible general mathematical framework to develop and implement optimal flexibility mechanisms in large-scale network applications. The motivation of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, flexibility mechanisms are currently a hot topic of research, which is aimed to mitigate variation and uncertainty of electricity demand and supply in decentralised grids with a high aggregated share of renewables. On the other hand, a large part of such related research is performed by heuristic methods, which are generally inefficient (such methods do not guarantee optimality) and difficult to extrapolate for different use cases. Alternatively, this paper presents an MPC-based (model predictive control) framework explicitly including a generic flexibility mechanism, which is easy to particularise to specific strategies such as demand response, flexible production and energy efficiency services. The proposed framework... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, financing programs, residential buildings, solar photovoltaics, space conditioning
We examine the energy use impacts of energy efficiency and solar PV projects financed by residential property assessed clean energy (R-PACE) programs in California. We leverage household-level interval meter data to apply normalized metered energy consumption (NMEC) methods at significant scale—more than 25,000 electric meters and more than 15,000 gas meters. We develop a comparison group to account for non-project-related changes in usage. The projects include homes that replaced existing HVAC equipment with higher-efficiency units and homes that installed central heating or air conditioning equipment for the first time. We have limited information on pre-project household equipment stock so we develop a method to infer new installations. We find that projects that installed energy efficiency technologies reduce electricity consumption by approximately 3% and gas consumption by approximately 3.5% on average. Nowadays, microgrids (MGs) play a crucial role in modern power systems due to possibility of integrating renewable energies into grid-connected or islanded power systems. The Load Frequency Control (LFC) is an issue of paramount importance to ensure MGs reliable and safe operation.
