Health Monitoring of Lithium-Ion Batteries Using Dual Filters
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery retirement, dual Kalman filter, Kalman filter, lithium battery, sliding innovation filter, state of charge, state of health
Accurate estimation of a battery’s capacity is critical for determining its state of health (SOH) and retirement, as well as to ensure its reliable operation. In this paper, a dual filter architecture using the Kalman filter (KF) and the novel sliding innovation filter (SIF) was implemented to estimate the capacity and state of charge (SOC) of a lithium-ion battery. NASA’s Prognostic Center of Excellence (PCOE) B005 battery data set was selected for this experiment based on its wide use in academia and industry. This dataset contains cycling data of a 2 Ah lithium-ion battery until its capacity was measured at 1.3 Ah or less. The dual polarity equivalent circuit model (DP-ECM) was selected for modeling. The model parameter values were estimated using the least squares (LS) algorithm. Under normal operating conditions, both the dual-KF and dual-SIF performed similarly in terms of estimation accuracy. However, an uncertainty case was considered where the filters were subjected to rapid c... [more]

An Extensive Review and Comparison of Modern Biomass Torrefaction Reactors vs. Biomass Pyrolysis—Part 1
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: biochar, pyrolysis, torrefaction
Major efforts are currently being made in the research community to address the challenges of greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel combustion by using lignocellulosic biomass, agricultural waste, and forest residues as cleaner energy sources. However, its poor qualities, such as low energy density, high moisture content, irregular shape and size, and heterogeneity, make it impossible to utilize in its natural state. Torrefaction, a simple heat treatment method, is used frequently with natural bioresources to improve their thermal characteristics so that they may be used as energy sources in domestic power plants. The quality of the resulting torrefied solids (biochar) is determined by the heat condition settings in the absence of oxygen, and it may be enhanced by carefully selecting and altering the processing parameters. The comprehensive overview presented here should serve as a useful toolkit for farmers, combined heat and power plants, pulp and paper installations, and other i... [more]

BiLSTM Network-Based Approach for Solar Irradiance Forecasting in Continental Climate Zones
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: attention-based bidirectional long short-term memory, coevolutionary neural network, solar radiation prediction, wavelet decomposition
Recent research on solar irradiance forecasting has attracted considerable attention, as governments worldwide are displaying a keenness to harness green energy. The goal of this study is to build forecasting methods using deep learning (DL) approach to estimate daily solar irradiance in three sites in Kuwait over 12 years (2008−2020). Solar irradiance data are used to extract and understand the symmetrical hidden data pattern and correlations, which are then used to predict future solar irradiance. A DL model based on the attention mechanism applied to bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) is developed for accurate solar irradiation forecasting. The proposed model is designed for two different conditions (sunny and cloudy days) to ensure greater accuracy in different weather scenarios. Simulation results are presented which depict that the attention based BiLSTM model outperforms the other deep learning networks in the prediction analysis of solar irradiance. The attention bas... Integrated Volt/Var Control Method for Voltage Regulation and Voltage Unbalance Reduction in Active Distribution Networks
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: combined distribution networks, volt/var control, voltage regulation, voltage unbalance
The emergence of distributed generation such as solar systems has introduced new challenges in distribution networks that are becoming more apparent with increasing penetration levels. The time mismatch between peak load and peak generation can make voltage levels in distribution networks swing towards extreme limits during a day. Distribution network service providers are struggling to cater for new distributed generation installations while ensuring that the quality of steady state supply voltage meets stipulated requirements. The segregation between medium and low voltage networks in control strategies may result in unnecessary or worse, opposing control actions leading to voltage issues and control on one side of the distribution network influencing the other. By developing an efficient volt/var control method, the steady state voltage level and voltage unbalance in a comprehensive distribution network can be controlled simultaneously. This paper analyses voltage issues and volt/va... [more]

Analysis of Control-System Strategy and Design of a Small Modular Reactor with Different Working Fluids for Electricity and Hydrogen Production as Part of a Decentralised Mini Grid
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Hydrogen is increasingly being viewed as a significant fuel for future industrial processes as it offers pathways to zero emission. The UK sees hydrogen as one of a handful of low-carbon solutions for transition to net zero. Currently, most hydrogen production is from steam reforming of natural gas or coal gasification, both of which involve the release of carbon dioxide. Hydrogen production from mini decentralised grids via a thermochemical process, coupled with electricity production, could offer favourable economics for small modular reactors (SMRs), whereby demand or grid management as a solution would include redirecting the power for hydrogen production when electricity demand is low. It also offers a clean-energy alternative to the aforementioned means. SMRs could offer favourable economics due to their flexible power system as part of the dual-output function. This study objective is to investigate the critical performance parameters associated with the nuclear power plant (NPP... [more]

An Analytical Algorithm for Extracting Model Parameters in a Lumped-Parameter Equivalent Circuit of Solar Cells
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: lumped-parameter equivalent circuit model, parameter extraction, solar cell
An analytical algorithm is proposed to extract model parameters in a single-diode lumped-parameter equivalent circuit of solar cells. In the calculation process, six relevant factors in the datasheet are necessary to establish a set of transcendental equations. This set of equations is analyzed and solved to acquire accurate values for the model parameters, by retaining equation items with important physical significance. Furthermore, based on simulations and reconstruction experiments, verifications show the accuracy and universality of the algorithm. Therefore, the proposed algorithm can be regarded as a valid solution for estimating the model parameters of a single-diode lumped-parameter circuit of solar cells.

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: mining roadway support, monitoring system, wire strain gauges
As part of the RFCS project, which aimed to improve transport safety in mines, ITG KOMAG proposed a system for monitoring loads and geometric of arch support. The system’s function is to control safety, mainly during suspended monorail runs. This paper presents a hardware model and a measurement method based on the use of vibrating wire strain gauges and draw-wire sensors. The challenge was to properly adapt the vibrating wire strain gauge operation to the requirements of the ATEX directive on the safe use of electrical equipment in underground mines. The signal transducer algorithm and potential mounting locations for the proposed sensors were discussed. The results of tests carried out using the ŁP arc support are presented, reflecting the actual behavior of the casing during loading in accordance with the test methodology proposed by the Central Mining Institute. In order to compare the results with another measurement method, film strain gauges were additionally applied. The result... [more]

Frequency Dynamics in Fully Non-Synchronous Electrical Grids: A Case Study of an Existing Island
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: 100% converter-interfaced generation, frequency control, grid-forming, microgrids, virtual synchronous machine
The operation of a power system with 100% converter-interfaced generation poses several questions and challenges regarding various aspects of the design and the control of the system. Existing literature on the integration of renewable energy sources in isolated systems mainly focuses on energy aspects or steady-state issues, and only a few studies examine the dynamic issues of autonomous networks operated with fully non-synchronous generation. A lack of research can be found in particular in the determination of the required amount of grid-forming power, the selection of the number and rated power of the units which should implement the grid-forming controls, and the relative locations of the grid-forming converters. The paper aims to address those research gaps starting from a theoretical point of view and then by examining the actual electrical network of an existing island as a case study. Effects of Multi-Stage Split Injection on Efficiency and Emissions of Light-Duty Diesel Engine
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: engine efficiency, engine emissions, flame visualization, injection strategy, split injection
The efficiency of light-duty diesel engines should be improved for further emissions regulation. Multi-stage split injection with five injection events was investigated for improvement in efficiency at low-load conditions. The injection timing and quantity were adjusted to achieve a smooth in-cylinder pressure rise and continuous heat release. The multi-stage split injection was compared to injection strategies involving two-pilot and single-main injections. A 0.5 L single-cylinder diesel engine experiment was conducted under low-load conditions. Two multi-stage split injection processes with different combustion phases were developed. The multi-stage split injections yielded a smooth in-cylinder pressure trace and a lower peak heat release rate than the two-pilot injection process. The combustion duration was shorter for multi-stage split injection with an advanced combustion phase, and the fuel consumption was reduced by 1.78% with lower heat transfer, exhaust heat, and combustion lo... Non-Technical Electricity Losses
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electricity theft, non-technical electricity losses, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, transmission and distribution losses
Non-technical loss of electricity (comprising theft, fraud, non-payment and billing irregularities) is a significant issue, particularly in developing countries, and represents a large financial burden on utility companies, governments and society as a whole. This paper takes a wholistic and global view of the challenge and provides a broad perspective of the interrelated issues. Media reports and public perception of non-technical losses tend to focus on residential consumers, particularly those with limited financial resources, whereas review of more robust literature indicates that the largest proportion of non-technical losses is often due to industry, state-owned enterprises and relatively well-off residential consumers. Measures to reduce non-technical losses focusing on average residential consumers, such as pre-paid metering, therefore have limited effect on overall losses. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: agrivoltaic, solar energy, spectral-splitting CPV
This research presents a highly transparent concentrator photovoltaic system with solar spectral splitting for dual land use applications. The system includes a freeform lens array and a planar waveguide. Sunlight is first concentrated by the lens array and then reaches a flat waveguide. The dichroic mirror with coated prisms is located at each focused area at the bottom of a planar waveguide to split the sunlight spectrum into two spectral bands. The red and blue light, in which photosynthesis occurs at its maximum, passes through the dichroic mirror and is used for agriculture. The remaining spectrums are reflected at the dichroic mirror with coated prisms and collected by the long solar cell attached at one end of the planar waveguide by total internal reflection. Meanwhile, most of the diffused sunlight is transmitted through the system to the ground for agriculture. The Effect of Hydrogen Peroxide on NH3/O2 Counterflow Diffusion Flames
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, laminar flames, maritime transport
The impact of adding H2O2 in the fuel stream on the structure of non-premixed opposed-flow NH3/O2 flames was investigated numerically using a verified computational tool and validated mechanism. The results illustrate the dual role of the added H2O2 within the fuel jet. A small amount of H2O2 within the NH3 stream acted as a fuel additive that enhanced the reaction rate via reducing the kinetic time scale. However, a novel flame structure appeared when the H2O2 mole fraction within the fuel stream increased to χH2O2 > 16%. Unlike the pure NH3/O2 flame, a premixed reaction zone was discerned on the fuel side, in which H2O2 reacts with NH3 and played the role of an oxidizer. Then, the remaining NH3 that survived premixed combustion continues reacting with O2 and forms a non-premixed flame. As a result of this structure, it was shown that the well-established conclusion of “near-equilibrium” non-premixed flame analysis in which the strain on the flame is determined by the momentum fluxes... Water Distribution in the Ultra-Deep Shale of the Wufeng−Longmaxi Formations from the Sichuan Basin
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: irreducible water, pore structure, shale gas, water distribution
Recently, deep and ultra-deep shales (depth >3500 m) of the Lower Paleozoic Wufeng−Longmaxi formations (WF−LMX) have become attractive targets for shale gas exploration and development in China, and their gas contents may be influenced by the occurrence of water to some extent. However, the water content and its distribution in the different nanopores of the deep and ultra-deep shales have rarely been reported. In this study, a suite of the WF−LMX ultra-deep shale samples (5910−5965 m depth) from the Well PS1 was collected for water content measurements, and low-pressure CO2 and N2 adsorption experiments of both as-received and experimentally dried shale samples were carried out to investigate the distribution of water in the different nanopores. Since the studied ultra-deep shales are characterized by higher thermal maturity (equivalent vitrinite reflectance (EqVRo) > 2.5 %) and ultra-low water saturation, the pore water is generally dominated by irreducible water. An Improved Control Strategy of PMSM Drive System with Integrated Bidirectional DC/DC
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bidirectional DC/DC, per-unit, SVPWM modulation, voltage command compensation
With the development of power electronic technology, adding bidirectional DC/DC to the DC side of the motor controller has become an effective way to broaden the speed of motors. However, the motor drive system integrated with bidirectional DC/DC increases the switching loss and current harmonics of the inverter. Therefore, in this paper, a method based on fixed space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) modulation index and voltage instruction compensation are proposed, In this method, by considering the back electromotive force of the motor and the security margin of the weak magnetic region, the output voltage command amplitude of the current loop and the limit value of the inverter output is judged, and the optimal inverter input voltage is obtained, which effectively reduces the switching loss of the inverter, broadens the high efficient area of motor operation, and improves the efficiency of the controller. Optimal Scheduling of Battery Energy Storage Systems and Demand Response for Distribution Systems with High Penetration of Renewable Energy Sources
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: battery energy storage systems, demand response, distribution systems, Optimization, renewable energy sources, simulation platform
The penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) is increasing in modern power systems. However, the uncertainties of RESs pose challenges to distribution system operations, such as RES curtailment. Demand response (DR) and battery energy storage systems (BESSs) are flexible countermeasures for distribution-system operators. In this context, this study proposes an optimization model that considers DR and BESSs and develops a simulation analysis platform representing a medium-sized distribution system with high penetration of RESs. First, BESSs and DR were employed to minimize the total expenses of the distribution system operation, where the BESS model excluding binary state variables was adopted. Second, a simulation platform based on a modified IEEE 123 bus system was developed via MATLAB/Simulink for day-ahead scheduling analysis of the distribution system with a high penetration of RESs. Improvement of PMSM Sensorless Control Based on Synergetic and Sliding Mode Controllers Using a Reinforcement Learning Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient Agent
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: deep neural networks, permanent magnet synchronous motor, reinforcement learning, sliding mode control, synergetic control
The field-oriented control (FOC) strategy of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) in a simplified form is based on PI-type controllers. In addition to their low complexity (an advantage for real-time implementation), these controllers also provide limited performance due to the nonlinear character of the description equations of the PMSM model under the usual conditions of a relatively wide variation in the load torque and the high dynamics of the PMSM speed reference. Moreover, a number of significant improvements in the performance of PMSM control systems, also based on the FOC control strategy, are obtained if the controller of the speed control loop uses sliding mode control (SMC), and if the controllers for the inner control loops of id and iq currents are of the synergetic type. Furthermore, using such a control structure, very good performance of the PMSM control system is also obtained under conditions of parametric uncertainties and significant variations in the combine... Fast Experimental Magnetic Model Identification for Synchronous Reluctance Motor Drives
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: constant-speed method, dead-time, flux maps, magnetic model identification
The accurate magnetic model is mandatory for high-performance control of high anisotropy synchronous machines. This paper presents a time-efficient and accurate magnetic model identification based on triangle current injection while the machine under the test is driven at a constant speed by a prime mover. The current injection pattern allows scanning the whole range of current, reducing the identification time compared to the standard constant-speed method (CSM) with the same level of accuracy. The ohmic voltage drop and inverter nonlinearities are compensated by using the average voltage of motor and generator modes. The synchronous reluctance machine is used as a case study for validation through the comparison between the experimental results obtained by the proposed method and the CSM against finite element simulation. Moreover, the temperature variation of the machine winding is measured showing no considerable changes during the identification test.

Application of Far-Gather Seismic Attributes in Suppressing the Interference of Coal Beds in Reservoir Prediction
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coal strata, dominant far-offset, pre-stack AVO forward, reservoir prediction, seismic response
The sandstone reservoir of the Pinghu Formation in the Xihu Depression, East China Sea is characterized by great depth, small thickness, radical facies change and a widespread coal bed. It is difficult to describe the reservoir accurately using conventional reservoir prediction methods. In order to analyze the influence of coal-bearing strata on the prediction of the mid-low thickness sandstone reservoir, the seismic response of different sandstone−coal stratigraphic assemblages was simulated by seismic forward modeling. The modeling result indicates that the post-stack seismic response is dominated by coal bed, whereas the response of sandstone can hardly be recognized. In contrast, the difference between the pre-stack AVO (amplitude versus offset) response characteristics of coal seams and gas-bearing sandstones has been clarified based on the statistics pertaining to AVO characteristics of drilled wells. Therefore, we propose a method to reduce the interference of coal beds in sands... [more]
