March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric energy meters automatic verification, flow shop scheduling, Q-learning, reinforcement learning
Considering the engineering problem of electric energy meter automatic verification and scheduling, this paper proposes a novel scheduling scheme based on an improved Q-learning algorithm. First, by introducing the state variables and behavior variables, the ranking problem of combinatorial optimization is transformed into a sequential decision problem. Then, a novel reward function is proposed to evaluate the pros and cons of the different strategies. In particular, this paper considers adopting the reinforcement learning algorithm to efficiently solve the problem. In addition, this paper also considers the ratio of exploration and utilization in the reinforcement learning process, and then provides reasonable exploration and utilization through an iterative updating scheme. Meanwhile, a decoupling strategy is introduced to address the restriction of over estimation. Finally, real time data from a provincial electric energy meter automatic verification center are used to verify the ef... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: building energy efficiency, carbon dioxide equivalent emissions, office building refurbishment, second-skin facade, simple payback period, tensile facade, TRNSYS
A large amount of the Iranian energy demand is related to the building sector, mainly due to its obsolescence. In this paper, a second-skin system has been implemented as a retrofit action for an office building, evaluating the effect of a tensile material as second-skin in terms of primary energy saving, carbon dioxide equivalent emissions, and simple payback period. The analysis was carried out through numerical simulations across a whole year and for four Iranian cities (Tabriz, Teheran, Yazd, and Bandar Abbas) in four different climates (cold, temperate, hot-dry, and hot-wet), and with the building aligned at either north-south or east-west. Moreover, an economic analysis was carried out suggesting different incentive policies to promote building energy refurbishment. The simulation results highlighted a favorable orientation for buildings in Iran, suggesting a guideline for new constructions. Indeed, the best results were achieved for an east-west orientation of the building (up t... [more]

Keywords: electrical machine, PMSG, power electronics, sliding mode control, wind turbine
In recent years, regulating a wind energy conversion system (WECS) under fluctuating wind speed and enhancing the quality of the electricity provided to the grid has become a hard challenge for many academics. The current research provides a better control strategy to decrease the occurrence of chattering phenomena. Combined with the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) strategy and a pitch angle control, the control is possible to increase the performance and the efficiency of the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) based Wind Energy Conversion System. This study attempts initially to regulate the generator and the grid side converter to track the wind speed reference established by the MPPT algorithm. And secondly, to relieve the chattering problem associated with the conventional sliding mode control (CSMC), the proposed sliding mode control (PSMC) is based on a novel smooth continuous switching control. Besides, the suggested sliding mode control stability is confirmed usi... [more]

Keywords: arc steelmaking furnace, control of electrode movement, dynamic volt-ampere characteristic of the arc, hardware in the loop, mathematical model
The synthesis of a real-time model of the electric mode of an arc steelmaking furnace is shown. This model is based on the method of medium-voltage and can be used to analyze the impact of the arc steelmaking furnace on the supply network at different stages of the melting process at different control systems of the electromechanical electrode movement system, and to create model-predictive control systems of electrode movement, when control using hardware in the loop technology. To implement the chosen method, the dynamic arc resistance was used. The last was obtained on the basis of the averaged experimentally taken volt-ampere characteristics of the arc. In paper was proposed its approximation as a current function and arc length. The simulation results obtained using the created model for different operation modes of the arc steelmaking chipboard for a system with a traditional regulator of the electrode movement system are demonstrated.
Combining the Multilevel Perspective and Socio-Technical Imaginaries in the Study of Community Energy
Natalia Magnani, Valentina-Miriam Cittati
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: community renewable energy, energy transition, multilevel perspective, socio-technical imaginaries
The current paper contributes to the literature on community renewable energy by considering two projects developed in the north-west of Italy, in the Piedmont region. Community renewable energy is increasingly regarded by academic literature and policy discourse as crucial to ensure a socially and environmentally just energy transition. In spite of the growing diffusion of community renewable energy projects, there is still a lack of theoretically informed analyses. Our article tries to address this gap by combining two theoretical perspectives: the multilevel perspective and the socio-technical imaginaries approach. Applying the first perspective helps reconstruct the context and circumstances that have permitted the Piedmont’s energy community projects to emerge. Particular attention is given to the windows of opportunity created by the Regional Law 12/2018, which acknowledged the establishment of energy communities for the first time in Italy. The socio-technical imaginaries perspe... [more]

Mohammadreza Azizi, Oleksandr Husev, Dmitri Vinnikov
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: buck–boost operation, single-stage inverter, survey
Single-stage buck−boost inverters have attracted the attention of many researchers, due to their ability to increase/decrease the output voltage in one power conversion stage. One of the most important uses of these inverters is in photovoltaic applications, where the voltage of the solar panels varies in a wide range. In recent years, many new inverters have been proposed to improve the performance of existing structures. In this paper, the state of the art of these single-stage buck−boost inverters is discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of each structure are examined from different perspectives, such as the number of components, losses, and performance. Finally, in a general comparison, the properties of all structures are discussed and summarized in a table.

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: parameters, pelletization, physicochemical properties, yak manure
This study was first conducted to comprehensively investigate the potential of yak manure as a raw material to prepare fuel pellets. The effect of different parameters such as binder, pressure, and moisture content on pellet density and diametric compressing strength was investigated using a laboratory single pelleting press unit. Results showed that increasing the pressure can help to obtain high-quality fuel pellets. The pellet properties (density and diametric compressing strength) initially increased and then decreased with moisture content increase. By contrast, binder was not identified to promote density and diametric compressing strength. The parameters were optimized using the response surface method with central composite design to obtain high-quality pellets. In conclusion, the use of yak manure as a raw material to make fuels can be considered a sustainable approach and can effectively be used to fulfill the energy and heating requirements of rural areas.

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, irradiance and temperature behavior, organic photovoltaic (OPV), performance analysis
Organic photovoltaic (OPV) solar cells represent an emerging and promising solution for low-cost clean energy production. Being flexible and semi-transparent and having significant advantages over conventional PV technologies, OPV modules represent an innovative solution even in applications that cannot be based on traditional PV systems. However, relatively low efficiencies, poor long-term stability, and thermal issues have so far prevented the commercialization of this technology. This paper describes two outdoor experimental campaigns that compared the operation of OPV modules with traditional PV modules—in particular crystalline silicon and copper−indium−selenium (CIS)—and assessed the OPV modules’ power generation potential in vertical installation and facing towards the cardinal directions.

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: asset management, data cleaning, power system, transmission cable
Asset management technology is rapidly growing in the electric power industry because utilities are paying attention to which of their aged assets should be replaced first. The global trend of asset management follows risk management that comprehensively considers the probability and consequences of failures. In the asset management system, the risk assessment algorithm operates by interfacing digital datasets from various legacy systems. In this study, among the various electric power assets, we consider transmission cable systems as a representative linear asset consisting of different segments. First, the configurations and characteristics of linear asset datasets are analyzed. Second, six types of data cleaning functions are proposed for extracting dirty data from the entire dataset. Third, three types of data integration functions are developed to simulate the risk assessment algorithm. This technique supports the integration of distributed asset data in various legacy systems int... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: biohydrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, lithium-ion battery, pyrometallurgy, recycling, spent cathode material
With the rapid development of the electric vehicle industry in recent years, the use of lithium batteries is growing rapidly. From 2015 to 2040, the production of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles could reach 0.33 to 4 million tons. It is predicted that a total of 21 million end-of-life lithium battery packs will be generated between 2015 and 2040. Spent lithium batteries can cause pollution to the soil and seriously threaten the safety and property of people. They contain valuable metals, such as cobalt and lithium, which are nonrenewable resources, and their recycling and treatment have important economic, strategic, and environmental benefits. Estimations show that the weight of spent electric vehicle lithium-ion batteries will reach 500,000 tons in 2020. Methods for safely and effectively recycling lithium batteries to ensure they provide a boost to economic development have been widely investigated. This paper summarizes the recycling technologies for lithium batteries d... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), Catalysis, catalyst, catalyst design, CO2 feedstock, heterogenous catalysts database, methanation, photocatalysis, Power-to-Gas
The growing emission of carbon dioxide (CO2), combined with its ecotoxicity, is the reason for the intensification of research on the new technology of CO2 management. Currently, it is believed that it is not possible to eliminate whole CO2 emissions. However, a sustainable balance sheet is possible. The solution is technologies that use carbon dioxide as a raw material. Many of these methods are based on CO2 methanation, for example, projects such as Power-to-Gas, production of fuels, or polymers. This article presents the concept of using CO2 as a raw material, the catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide to methane, and consideration on CO2 methanation catalysts and their design.

Keywords: combustion chamber, large-eddy simulation, particle image velocimetry, precessing vortex core, swirling flow
We studied flow dynamics in a model combustion chamber using Large-eddy simulations (LES) and Particle image velocimetry (PIV) at the Reynolds number Re of 15,000. The swirl is produced using a Turbomeca swirler and air flow, while combustion is supported by a central methane/air jet. We compared four flow regimes, assessing the effect of the central jet for isothermal and lean reacting conditions. A detailed comparison for isothermal and reactive cases without the central jet is described, validating the LES results against PIV. We observe that unsteady dynamics are governed by global instability in the form of a well-known precessing vortex core (PVC). The central jet slightly changes the dynamics of PVC in the isothermal case where a strong recirculation zone is still formed. However, for the reacting case, the bubble is completely destroyed with no signs of strong vortical structures in the inner shear layer. These observations are confirmed using spectral analysis and proper ortho... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: even-order current harmonics, half-controlled rectifier, harmonic analysis, mathematical model, power quality, semiconverter, u–i characteristic
In this study, the feedback effects of a three-phase half-controlled rectifier (also known as a semiconverter) to three-phase AC power grid was analyzed. Special attention was paid to the identification of harmonic order of the phase current. As a reference point for analysis, the mathematical model of an uncontrolled rectifier was used. The harmonic order of the phase current was identified by displaying the measurement results as well as using a mathematical model that is easily applicable, although this is unusual for harmonic analysis because it is based on time domain data. For this purpose, laboratory models of uncontrolled and half-controlled rectifiers were assembled. For both converters, the results obtained by practical laboratory measurements were compared to the mathematically obtained results, with the commutation in the mathematical model being ignored. The effects of commutation were analyzed in more detail for the laboratory model. For the semiconverter, the characteris... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon capture power plant, comprehensive cost, EEMD, low carbon, LSTM, SVR, wind power
The optimal utilization of wind power and the application of carbon capture power plants are important measures to achieve a low-carbon power system, but the high-energy consumption of carbon capture power plants and the uncertainty of wind power lead to low-carbon coordination problems during load peaks. To address these problems, firstly, the EEMD-LSTM-SVR algorithm is proposed to forecast wind power in the Belgian grid in order to tackle the uncertainty and strong volatility of wind power. Furthermore, the conventional thermal power plant is transformed into an integrated carbon capture power plant containing split-flow and liquid storage type, and the low-carbon mechanism of the two approaches is adequately discussed to give the low-carbon realization mechanism of the power system. Secondly, the mathematical model of EEMD-LSTM-SVR algorithm and the integrated low-carbon economic dispatch model are constructed. Finally, the simulation is verified in a modified IEEE-39 node system wi... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy extraction, low mass ratio, oscillating bent plate, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, vortex induced vibration
Low-grade renewable energy possesses large reserves and a wide distribution in the environment, but it is far from fully exploited due to the high cost−income ratio when using traditional convertors. A fluid-induced-vibration-based flow energy convertor with a low-cost bent plate as an oscillator is proposed to achieve better energy converting performance for low-grade flow energy conversion. The energy extraction performance and dynamic response of the bent plate are assessed numerically. The results demonstrate that the prescribed single-DOF (degree of freedom) bent plate can reach the maximum efficiency of 29.6% and power coefficient of 2.36 at the relative plunging amplitude of 3.5, while the double-DOF bent plate achieves a maximum efficiency of 37.3% and power coefficient of 1.42 at a smaller amplitude of 1.4. It is discovered that the adoption of pitching motion can help to control the variation pattern of the effective AOA (angle of attack), while the camber of the bent plate a... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: displacement estimation method, least-squares support vector machine, modified particle swarm optimization, six-pole hybrid magnetic bearing
In order to solve the problems of the large volume and high cost of a six-pole hybrid magnetic bearing (SHMB) with displacement sensors, a displacement estimation method using a modified particle swarm optimization (MPSO) least-squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) is proposed. Firstly, the inertial weight of the MPSO is changed to achieve faster iterations, and the prediction model of an LS-SVM-based MPSO is built. Secondly, the prediction model is simulated and verified according to the parameters optimized by the MPSO, and the predicted values of MPSO and PSO are compared. Finally, static and dynamic suspension experiments and a disturbance experiment are carried out, which verify the robustness and stability of the displacement estimation method.
Nickel-Based Electrocatalysts for Water Electrolysis

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: earth-abundant metals, electrocatalysis, HER, nickel, OER, water electrolysis
Currently, hydrogen production is based on the reforming process, leading to the emission of pollutants; therefore, a substitute production method is imminently required. Water electrolysis is an ideal alternative for large-scale hydrogen production, as it does not produce any carbon-based pollutant byproducts. The production of green hydrogen from water electrolysis using intermittent sources (e.g., solar and eolic sources) would facilitate clean energy storage. However, the electrocatalysts currently required for water electrolysis are noble metals, making this potential option expensive and inaccessible for industrial applications. Therefore, there is a need to develop electrocatalysts based on earth-abundant and low-cost metals. Nickel-based electrocatalysts are a fitting alternative because they are economically accessible. Extensive research has focused on developing nickel-based electrocatalysts for hydrogen and oxygen evolution. Theoretical and experimental work have addressed... [more]

Keywords: CCU, LCA, Power-to-Gas, synthetic natural gas, techno economic analysis
Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) is the most researched option for a Power-to-Fuel pathway in Germany after hydrogen, having the advantage of being compatible with the existing infrastructure. However, it is not clear under which conditions SNG is economically and environmentally advantageous compared to natural gas usage, since this is determined by a complex interplay of many factors. This study analyzes the technical, economic and environmental aspects of a pilot SNG plant to determine the key parameters for profitable and sustainable operation. The SNG plant was simulated in Aspen Plus® with CO2 from biogas production as a feedstock and with hydrogen provided by a 1 MWel electrolyzer unit. A life cycle analysis (LCA) was undertaken considering several impact categories with a special focus on global warming potential (GWP). An SNG cost of 0.33−4.22 €/kWhth was calculated, depending on factors such as operational hours, electricity price and type of electrolyzer. It was found that the CO... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Genetic Algorithm, high-boost-ratio engine, optimization design
With the increasingly stringent CO2 emission regulations, the degree of strengthening of the engines is increasing. Under high-pressure conditions, the airway throat parts of the intake and exhaust systems have a great influence on the flow loss of the diesel engine. The reasonable distribution of the throat area of the intake and exhaust ports in the limited cylinder headspace is key to improving the performance of supercharged engines. This study took a large-bore, high-pressure ratio diesel engine as the research object. Firstly, the three-dimensional (3D) flow simulation method was used to reveal the influence law of different throat areas on the engine intake and exhaust flow under steady-state conditions, and a steady-flow test bench was built to verify the accuracy of the simulation model and law. Secondly, based on the 3D steady-state calculation and test results, a more accurate one-dimensional simulation model was constructed, and a joint optimization simulation platform was... [more]

Keywords: carbon nanotubes, direct absorption solar collector, hybrid nanofluid, iron oxide, magnetic nanofluid
The paper presents the experimental measurements of thermal efficiency of a tubular direct absorption solar collector (DASC) with a hybrid nanofluid based on magnetite (Fe3O4) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). The volumetric concentration of Fe3O4 and MWCNT was 0.0053% and 0.0045%, respectively. The experiments were carried out for the flow rates of 2−10 L/min and a temperature difference up to 20 ∘C between the environment and the DASC. The performance of the DASC with a hybrid nanofluid was in the range of 52.3−69.4%, which was just beyond the performance of the collector with surface absorption. It was also found that using a MWCNT-based nanofluid with an equivalent total volumetric concentration of particles (0.0091%), the efficiency was 8.3−31.5% higher than for the cases with the hybrid nanofluid.

Subject: Environment
Keywords: environmental monitoring, hot climate, physical measurement, residential building, thermal performance
The Saudi Arabian climate, generally speaking, is known to be hot and arid. Even with its extensive energy resources, Saudi Arabia is not immune to the demands of climate change. Over 50% of the country’s electricity is consumed by residential buildings. For economic, fiscal, and environmental reasons, government policy is to stem the profligate use of finite energy resources. It is incumbent on the Saudi building industry to adapt to changing conditions by re-assessing the choice of materials and the design and lay-out of new buildings to help quell demands for air-conditioning during the hotter parts of the year. Throughout the country, electricity consumption doubles in the summer months. Given this situation, this study explores the indoor thermal environment typical of residential buildings. The study selected one house located in a hot dry climatic region as a case study. The features of the house were assessed to determine the permeable features that require improvement. Two mai... Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy and environmental, fuel consumption, Machine Learning
The underestimation of fuel consumption impacts various aspects. In the vehicle market, manufacturers often advertise fuel economy for marketing. In fact, the fuel consumption reference value provided by the manufacturer is quite different from the real-world fuel consumption of the vehicles. The divergence between reference fuel consumption and real-world fuel consumption also has negative effect on the aspects of policy and environment. In order to effectively promote the sustainable development of transport, it is urged to recognize the real-world fuel consumption of vehicles. The gaps in previous studies includes small sample size, single data dimension, and lack of feature weight evaluation. To fill the research gap, in this study, we conduct a comparative analysis through building five regression models to forecast the real-world fuel consumption rate of light-duty gasoline vehicles in China based on big data from the perspectives of vehicle factors, environment factors, and driv...
