Investigating the Efficiencies of Fusion Algorithms for Accurate Equipment Monitoring and Prognostics
Ugochukwu Ejike Akpudo, Jang-Wook Hur
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: autoencoder, condition monitoring, health indicator, prognostics, sensor fusion
Recent findings suggest the need for optimal condition monitoring due to increasing counter-productive issues ranging from threats to life, malware, and hardware failures. Several prognostic schemes have been reported across many disciplines; however, the issues of sensor data discrepancy emanating from varying loading and operating conditions of cyber-physical system (CPS) components still remain a challenging factor. Nonetheless, a significant part of these prognostic schemes comprises a sensor/feature fusion module for comprehensive health indicator (HI) construction. This study investigates the prowess of unsupervised fusion algorithms for constructing optimal HI construction on two publicly available datasets—a simulated turbofan engine degradation experiment and an actual production plant condition monitoring dataset. The fusion efficiencies of the algorithms were evaluated using standard metrics for prognostic parameter assessments. The results show that the autoencoder is more... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrolyser, fuel cell, heat demand, HOMER energy, hydrogen energy system, Modelling, PV system, renewable energies, Simulink
In this work, a model of an energy system based on photovoltaics as the main energy source and a hybrid energy storage consisting of a short-term lithium-ion battery and hydrogen as the long-term storage facility is presented. The electrical and the heat energy circuits and resulting flows have been modelled. Therefore, the waste heat produced by the electrolyser and the fuel cell have been considered and a heat pump was considered to cover the residual heat demand. The model is designed for the analysis of a whole year energy flow by using a time series of loads, weather and heat profile as input. This paper provides the main set of equations to derive the component properties and describes the implementation into MATLAB/Simulink. The novel model was created for an energy flow simulation over one year. The results of the simulation have been verified by comparing them with well-established simulation results from HOMER Energy. It turns out that the novel model is well suited for the a... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, freezing process, gas release, methane, permafrost table
Research on methane and carbon dioxide emissions mainly focuses on industrial emissions, cultivated land, and wetlands, while few studies have studied freezing-related emissions. This paper presents field experiments conducted during soil freezing to measure carbon dioxide and methane concentrations in the air, near the soil surface, and in the soil. In addition, the influence of precipitation, snowfall, air temperature, and depth of freezing on gas emissions was analyzed. We observed increased concentrations of methane and carbon dioxide in soil and air at soil freezing and snow cover growth. For the first time, an increase in gas flux during soil freezing was found in the absence of permafrost.

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: driving factor analysis, low-carbon transformation, power industry, relative importance analysis, spatial Durbin model
The low-carbon transformation of the power industry is of great significance to realize the carbon peak in advance. However, almost a third of China’s CO2 emissions came from the power sector in 2019. This paper aimed to identify the key drivers of CO2 emissions in China’s power industry with the consideration of spatial autocorrelation. The spatial Durbin model and relative importance analysis were combined based on Chinese provincial data from 2003 to 2019. This combination demonstrated that GDP, the power supply structure and energy intensity are the key drivers of CO2 emissions in China’s power industry. The self-supply ratio of electricity and the spatial spillover effect have a slight effect on increasing CO2 emissions. The energy demand structure and CO2 emission intensity of thermal power have a positive effect, although it is the lowest. Second, the positive impact of GDP on CO2 emissions is decreasing, but that of the power supply structure and energy intensity is increasing.... [more]
Metal Modified NaY Zeolite as Sorbent for the Ultra-Deep Removal of Thiophene in Simulated Coke Oven Gas
Fanjing Wei, Xiaoqin Guo, Weiren Bao, Liping Chang, Junjie Liao
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Adsorption, coke oven gas, metal modification, thiophene, Y zeolite
The ultra-deep removal of thiophene is essential for the conversion of coke oven gas to methane and metal modified Y zeolite has excellent thiophene adsorption capacity. The effects of temperature on chemisorption between metal modified Y zeolite and thiophene and the reductive gases in coke oven gas on the thiophene adsorption performance still remains ambiguous. To address the aforementioned aims, series of NaMY (M = Ce, Ni, Zn and Ag) were prepared via ion-exchanged with Na+ of NaY, and two comparable sets of thiophene adsorption evaluation were conducted in a fixed bed reactor: (1) NaY and NaMY were evaluated at different temperatures in simulated coke oven gas, and (2) NaCeY was evaluated in N2 and different reductive atmospheres. The results show that NaNiY, NaZnY and NaAgY could adsorb thiophene via π-complexation, however, NaCeY mainly through S-Ce bond. Π complexation becomes weak above 150 °C, and the strength of S-Ce bond varies little when the temperature rises to 250 °C. C... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: components fractionation, ethanol treatment, lignocellulose, ultrasonic
The fractionation of components of lignocellulosic biomass is important to be able to take advantage of biomass resources. The hydrothermal−ethanol method has significant advantages for fraction separation. The first step of hydrothermal treatment can separate hemicellulose efficiently, but hydrothermal treatment affects the efficiency of ethanol treatment to delignify lignin. In this study, the efficiency of lignin removal was improved by an ultrasonic-assisted second-step ethanol treatment. The effects of ultrasonic time, ultrasonic temperature, and ultrasonic power on the ultrasonic ethanol treatment of hydrothermal straw were investigated. The separated lignin was characterized by solid product composition analysis, FT-IR, and XRD. The hydrolysate was characterized by GC-MS to investigate the advantage on the products obtained by ethanol treatment. The results showed that an appropriate sonication time (15 min) could improve the delignification efficiency. A proper sonication tempe... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: current ripple, energy conversion system, space vector modulation, three-phase isolated rectifier
A three-phase isolated rectifier features bidirectional power conversion and galvanic isolation, and is attractive as a high-efficiency energy conversion system. However, when a conventional modulation is applied to this rectifier, the excessive DC-link current ripple will result in increasing switching losses or the size of DC-link inductance, which is not cost-effective. In order to effectively reduce the current ripple, this paper proposes a “six segment” PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) strategy. It can significantly reduce the current ripple compared with the existing “eight segment” PWM strategy. Meanwhile, the current quality of the grid is improved. Finally, the experimental tests were carried out. The experimental results reveal that, compared to the traditional “eight segment” PWM, the dc-side current ripple significantly reduced from 2 A to 0.8 A, the total harmonic distortion significantly reduced from 5.69% to 2.41%, and the power factor increased from 0.87 to 0.99, verifying... A Multi-Variable DTR Algorithm for the Estimation of Conductor Temperature and Ampacity on HV Overhead Lines by IoT Data Sensors
Rossana Coccia, Veronica Tonti, Chiara Germanò, Francesco Palone, Lorenzo Papi, Lorenzo Ricciardi Celsi
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ampacity, Bayes, DTR, industrial IoT, Monte Carlo, thermal balancing
The transfer capabilities of High-Voltage Overhead Lines (HV OHLs) are often limited by the critical power line temperature that depends on the magnitude of the transferred current and the ambient conditions, i.e., ambient temperature, wind, etc. To utilize existing power lines more effectively (with a view to progressive decarbonization) and more safely with respect to the critical power line temperatures, this paper proposes a Dynamic Thermal Rating (DTR) approach using IoT sensors installed on some HV OHLs located in different Italian geographical locations. The goal is to estimate the OHL conductor temperature and ampacity, using a data-driven thermo-mechanical model with the Bayesian probability approach, in order to improve the confidence interval of the results. This work highlights that it could be possible to estimate a space-time distribution of temperature for each OHL and an increase in the actual current threshold values for optimizing OHL ampacity. The proposed model is v... [more]
A Visualization and Analysis Method by Multi-Dimensional Crossplots from Multi-Well Heterogeneous Data
Maojun Cao, Zhiyong Gao, Ye Yuan, Zhao Yan, Yihong Zhang
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: augmented-dimensional depth match matrix, CIFLog, crossplot, heterogeneous data, multi-well, quadtree
Crossplot is an important tool for data visualization analysis in well logging processing and interpretation. Generally, the color of the points in the crossplot is calibrated by the data to improve the plane crossplot from two dimensions (2D) to three dimensions (3D). However, this method is limited to the logging data. In many cases, it is necessary to use crossplots for comprehensive evaluation with the well logging, geology, mud logging, and oil testing data, or to deeply analyze the data from multiple wells and multiple layers. The traditional crossplots cannot meet the demands. To expand the traditional crossplot to multiple dimensions, we proposed an augmented-dimensional visualization and analysis method by the crossplot with multi-well and multi-dimensional heterogeneous data, which is developed based on the traditional crossplots. Firstly, we built the match matrix of the augmented-dimensional heterogeneous data from different depths and set up the crossplots of the heterogen... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: combined test voltage, HVDC insulation, partial discharges
This paper presents the methodology for phase-resolved partial discharge measurements in HVDC systems with a DC voltage containing trace AC harmonics or a DC voltage ripple. The measurement result of partial discharges is an indicator of the current condition of the high-voltage power devices’ insulation system. The voltage waveforms in HVDC systems are not ideal DC, because different disturbances occurring naturally in these systems can affect the DC voltage. The AC harmonics related to the AC source voltage, and the voltage ripples provided by the power converter topology, can be found in the HVDC voltage. This paper proposes a novel approach to partial discharge measurement in DC networks. The synchronization to the particular AC harmonics appearing in DC voltage was applied to the PD measurements. The analyses were performed on the model sample containing a void inclusion, which was placed between electrodes fed by the DC voltages with the imposed chosen AC harmonics. Two scenarios... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gas cap evacuation, gas–liquid interface evolution, gas–liquid slug flow, liquid displacement, mobile pipeline
The mobile pipeline is the most effective and reliable means for the emergency oil transfer task, which is temporarily laid on the field. After completing the task, the oil in the pipeline should be emptied before the mobile pipeline is removed. The oil in pipeline gradually displaced by the air is a main method of pipeline evacuation, which is the only choice of jet fuel pipeline. Due to the convection between gas and oil phases, the length of the oil−gas mixing section and the evolution of the oil−gas interface change with time. The evolution of the gas−liquid interface directly determines the different flow patterns of oil−gas two phases, which are very important for the mobile pipeline evacuation. In this paper, the characteristics of the gas−liquid interface evolution during the water displaced by air are studied, using the multi-phase pipeline experiment. Through the change of the gas−liquid interface in the initial stage of gas cap evacuation, it is found that the gas−liquid int... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biogas plant, odorant emission, odour emission, odour load
Technological processes associated with municipal solid waste (MSW) processing are a potential source of odorant emissions, i.e., substances that cause negative olfactory impressions. When released into the atmosphere, these substances can cause odour nuisance complaints from residents. Many scientists have noted the strong relationship between odorant emission sources and odour concentrations and their significant impact on the living comfort of residents near these sources, as well as their social and economic relations. This paper attempts to estimate the odour load of selected elements of the technological sequence of a biogas plant processing municipal waste. Odour load was characterised by four constituents: odorant emissions, odour emissions, the variability of these emissions, and the emission levels per 1 Mg (1000 kg) of waste. The highest odour emissions accompany the storage of mixed MSW, which is associated with a large amount of waste. Limiting the storage time of waste sh... [more]

Keywords: hydrodynamic performance, oblique waves, oscillating water column, wave basin, wave energy conversion, wave energy converter
Most experimental research on land-fixed Oscillating Water Column (OWC) systems assume that the OWC-water wave interaction happens with waves that propagate normally towards the device. However, the angle of incidence of the waves can determine the performance of the OWC, in particular the wave period at which the device resonates. In this study, an experimental investigation to examine the interaction of regular, oblique, water waves with a land-fixed, thick-front wall OWC device in terms of its hydrodynamic performance is reported. A 1:20 Froude scale was used to replicate a single chamber of the Mutriku Wave Energy Plant (MWEP), and a series of tests were carried out in a spectral wave basin. The goal of this study is to look at how incident wave direction and device location affect the hydrodynamic performance of land-fixed OWC systems in regular wave conditions with varying wave heights. The hydraulic performance includes the assessment of the wave amplification factor, hydrodynam... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: breakdown strength, HVDC cable, space charge, XLPE insulation
This study focused on the effect of pre-crosslinking on the electrical properties of XLPE insulation for HVDC cables. The XLPE samples were pre-crosslinked at 140, 150 and 160 °C. The space charge and DC breakdown characteristics of the XLPE samples with and without pre-crosslinking were investigated. The results show that the pre-crosslinked XLPE samples have an obvious space charge injection and transportation, resulting in more severe electric field distortion. Under the electric field of 100 kV/mm, the electric field distortion rates of the XLPE samples pre-crosslinked at 150 and 160 °C reached 51% and 72% respectively, which were much higher than that of the XLPE sample without pre-crosslinking (14%.) Compared with the XLPE without pre-crosslinking, the breakdown strengths of XLPE pre-crosslinked at 140, 150 and 160 °C were reduced by 11%, 6% and 7% respectively, at the temperature of 50 °C. It is concluded that the pre-crosslinking leads to imperfect crystallization and micro-def... [more]
Effect of Shear-Thinning Property on the Energy Performance and Flow Field of an Axial Flow Pump
Weihua Sun, Zhiyi Yu, Wenwu Zhang
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: axial pump, energy performance, flow field, shear-thinning property
In the chemical and petroleum industry, the axial flow pump is widely used for the circulation pipeline system, and most of the transportation mediums are the shear-thinning non-Newtonian fluids. However, previous investigations on axial flow pumps are focused on water, which leads to a considerable deviation between the actual application and the research finding. In this work, shear-thinning non-Newtonian fluid (CMC solution) and viscous Newtonian fluid (the viscosity equals the apparent viscosity of CMC solution as the flow index is 1) are selected as the working medium. Based on the research output, lower apparent viscosity occurs in the near-wall and rotor−stator interaction region due to the larger velocity gradient. The shear-thinning property results in an increased tip leakage flow rate, and a sharp decline in friction loss. Compared to the viscous Newtonian fluid, the head and efficiency of the pump improves substantially for the shear-thinning fluid. The discrepancy is obser... [more]

Keywords: direct driven hydraulics, efficiency, forestry tractor, fuel savings, skidder
This paper investigates potential uses of a novel direct driven electro-hydraulic systems for articulated forestry tractors (skidders), due to these systems having notably higher energy efficiencies compared to classical electro-hydraulic systems that are currently being used in skidders for steering, lifting the front and the rear plate, as well as for operating the double-drum winch. A detailed analysis of the skidder rear plate mechanism is carried out, and static force profiles of hydraulic cylinders are obtained for the rear plate based on mechanism dynamics and measurement data from the literature. Thus, obtained results have been used to emulate the real-life force profiles in laboratory experiments featuring both the classical and the proposed direct driven hydraulic systems for the purpose of comparative analysis of their energy and fuel efficiency. These results are subsequently used to estimate the skidder fuel consumption and possible fuel savings over the entire vehicle li... [more]

Keywords: climate change, depth of zero annual amplitude, ground thermal regime, mean annual temperature, monitoring of permafrost
Climate warming in the Russian Arctic over the past 40 years shows a variety of patterns at different locations and time periods. In the second half of the 20th century, the maximum rates of warming were characteristic of the subarctic permafrost regions of Russia. But in the 21st century, the locations of the greatest rates of climate warming moved to the Arctic zone of Russia. It was one of the reasons for a sharp increase in permafrost temperatures, an increase in the depth of seasonal thaw, and the formation of closed taliks. It was found that as a result of climate change, the differences in permafrost temperatures between different cryogenic landscapes in the area of continuous and discontinuous permafrost distribution have decreased, and in the area of sporadic permafrost distribution are now practically absent. The thermal regime of the ground shows dramatic changes everywhere with a pronounced reduction in the depth of zero annual amplitude.

Keywords: asymmetric collapse, high spatiotemporal imaging, laser-induced bubble, liquid microjet, shadowgraph imaging, toroidal bubble
The collapse of a cavitation bubble is always associated with the radiation of intense shock waves, which are highly relevant in a variety of applications. To radiate a strong shock wave, it is necessary to converge energy at the collapse, and understanding generation processes of multiple shock waves at the collapse is a key issue. In the present study, we investigated the formation of multiple shock waves generated by the collapse of a laser-induced bubble. We used a high-speed imaging system with unprecedented spatiotemporal resolution. We developed a triggering procedure of high precision and reproducibility based on the deflection of a laser beam by the shockwave passage. The high-speed videos clearly show that: (A) a first shockwave is emitted as the micro-jet hits the bottom of the bubble interface, followed by a second shock wave due to the collapse of the remaining toroidal bubble; (B) a sequential collapse of elongated bubbles, where the top part of the bubble collapses sligh... Keywords: deep neural networks, electric vehicles (EVs), energy dissagregation, non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM), transfer learning
Electrification of transportation is gaining traction as a viable alternative to vehicles that use fossil-fuelled internal combustion engines, which are responsible for a major part of carbon dioxide emissions. This global turn towards electrification of transportation is leading to an exponential energy and power demand, especially during late-afternoon and early-evening hours, that can lead to great challenges that electricity grids need to face. Therefore, accurate estimation of Electric Vehicle (EV) charging loads and time of use is of utmost importance for different participants in the electricity markets. In this paper, a scalable methodology for detecting, from smart meter data, household EV charging events and their load consumption with robust evaluation, is proposed. This is achieved via a classifier based on Random Decision Forests (RF) with load reconstruction via novel post-processing and a regression approach based on sequence-to-subsequence Deep Neural Network (DNN) with... Keywords: energy demand, mobile robotics, powertrain design, robot delivery, sensitivity analysis
Last mile is known as the last leg of the delivery process, which is the most expensive and time-consuming part per kilometer. The most common last mile deliveries are postal packages, groceries and take away meals. Recently, there has been a growing interest and implementation of sidewalk autonomous delivery robots. These robots travel roughly at the speed of pedestrians (6 km/h). A high-speed (15 km/h) delivery robot design is proposed for reducing the time, energy and carbon footprint of deliveries. The preliminary design of the delivery robot powertrain is based on worst-case scenario analysis and Monte Carlo simulations with synthetic driving cycles. Synthetic driving cycles were used because there are no open data available of delivery robots. Thus, the procedure presented in this paper is a general approach for cases where there is no precedent application and/or no data are available. The synthetic driving cycles are based on start and end location of food-delivery services in... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, pressure balance pipeline, pump-turbine, runner axial force
In order to balance the intermittent supply of energy to the power grid, pumped storage units have to operate more and more in extended operating conditions and switch their mode frequently. During operation, the turbine unit has to withstand various axial forces that may cause deformation and fatigue damage to the key components of the machine. The excessive load could surpass the weight of the runner body, which is dangerous for the power plant. For the safe and stable operation, the simulation of the axial force under pump condition is performed by the computational fluid dynamics method (CFD) in this paper. The CFD simulation result has revealed the variation rule of the axial force with the operating condition. Besides, the conditions with pressure-balance pipelines (PBP) blockage are also investigated and the mechanism of PBP on reducing the axial force applied on the bracket has been revealed. The maximum stresses are calculated by means of Finite Element Method (FEM) and compar... [more]

Keywords: flux switching, parameter sensitivity, robust design approach, stator-PM
Parameter sensitivity analysis is usually required to select the key parameters with high sensitivity to the optimal goal before the optimization is carried out, especially for flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machines where lot of design parameters should be considered. Unlike the traditional studies on parameter sensitivity, which are generally experience- or statistics-based, and are time-consuming, this paper proposes a parameter sensitivity analysis method of a FSPM machine based on a magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC), which enables the parameters’ sensitivities to be evaluated by their exponential in the nondimensionalized equations, thus providing a fast and accurate way to obtain the parameter sensitivities. Thereafter, the influences of modular manufacturing methods on magnetic performances are discussed, and the robust design approach for the FSPM machine is introduced, which aims to achieve the best machine stability and robustness by setting boundaries on design dimen...
