Keywords: analytic hierarchy process, carbon neutrality, energy planning, low-carbon energy, power plant, spatial suitability
China announced a target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. As one of the most promising pathways to minimize carbon emissions, the low-carbon electricity supply is of high consideration in China’s future energy planning. The main purpose of this study is to provide a comparative overview of the regional siting potential of various low-carbon power plants in the Yangtze River Delta of China. First, unsuitable zones for power plants are identified and excluded based on national regulations and landscape constraints. Second, we evaluate the spatial siting potential of the seven low-carbon energy power plants by ranking their suitability with geographic information system (GIS)-based hierarchical analysis (AHP). The results revealed that around 78% of the area is suitable for power plant siting. In summary, biomass power plants have high siting potential in over half of the spatial areas. Solar photovoltaic and waste-to-electricity are encouraged to establish in the long-term future.... [more]

Semi-Empirical Approach to Gas Flow Velocity Measurement by Means of the Thermal Time-of-Flight Method—Further Investigation
Jacek Sobczyk
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: low flow velocity, thermal anemometer, thermal time-of-flight (TTOF), thermal wave
This paper describes a study to expand the knowledge as to whether a thermal wave anemometer can be used to measure the velocity of flowing gases or gas mixtures in situ. For this purpose, several series of measurements were performed in laboratory conditions using both the previously used probe and other probes of similar design. The probes were not modified mechanically or electrically in any way. The obtained results were compared with each other, and on this basis, the optimal, though purely empirical, form of the calibration function was determined (4). The analysis of the relative differences between the measured and set velocity values showed that they do not exceed 1% in the velocity range from 0.05 to 2.5 m/s. Lowering the sensitivity of the method for velocities below approx. 0.05 m/s results in a rapid increase in the observed deviations, reaching 15% for 0.015 m/s. The conducted research also revealed an increased resistance of the proposed measurement method to small flow... [more]

Wei Wang, Haifeng Zhao
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coal powder, critical particle size model, fiber fracturing fluid, space network structure
In view of the problems associated with coal powder production in the development of Coalbed Methane (CBM), a fiber fracturing fluid technology is proposed to control pulverized coal production. Based on a force analysis of coal powder in the fracture and the microstructure of fiber-proppant, a critical intercepted particle size model of coal powder is established. This model is primarily related to fiber properties, proppant particle size and flow rate. To verify this, an FCES-100 device (Nantong Yichuang Experimental Instrument Co., Ltd., Nantong, China) was used to study the influence of fibers on the transportation of pulverized coal in the proppant pack. Five groups of comparative experiments were set up using no fiber, 0.25 g undegraded fiber, 0.25 g degradable fiber, 0.5 g undegraded fiber and 0.5 g degraded fiber, with the flow rate and closure pressures controlled, and, finally, particle size analysis of the discharged pulverized coal was performed using a laser particle size... March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: demographic data, energy transitions, information management, residential sector, smart cities
Demographic factors, statistical information, and technological innovation are prominent factors shaping energy transitions in the residential sector. Explaining these energy transitions requires combining insights from the disciplines investigating these factors. The existing literature is not consistent in identifying these factors, nor in proposing how they can be combined. In this paper, three contributions are made by combining the key demographic factors of households to estimate household energy consumption. Firstly, a mathematical formula is developed by considering the demographic determinants that influence energy consumption, such as the number of persons per household, median age, occupancy rate, households with children, and number of bedrooms per household. Secondly, a geographical position algorithm is proposed to identify the geographical locations of households. Thirdly, the derived formula is validated by collecting demographic factors of five statistical regions from... [more]
A Study on Energy Tax Reform for Carbon Pricing Using an Input-Output Table for the Analysis of a Next-Generation Energy System
Satoshi Nakano, Ayu Washizu
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon tax, equilibrium price model, fairness of tax burden, input-output table
Carbon pricing, such as a carbon tax, is an invisible hand that leads to the construction of a sustainable low-carbon society, and precise analysis of the impact of carbon pricing on each sector of the economy is indispensable for its design. In this study, an equilibrium price model based on the 2015 input-output table was used for the analysis of next-generation energy systems (2015 IONGES) and the effect of the introduction of a carbon tax on the price of the industrial sector was assessed. Based on the existing energy-related tax system in Japan, the introduction of a carbon tax is regarded as an increase in the tax for global-warming countermeasures (TGWC) in the petroleum and coal tax (PCT). While existing energy-related taxes are designed to place a relatively heavy burden on the transportation sector, tax reform of the petroleum and coal tax has a relatively large effect on raising prices in energy-conversion and energy-intensive sectors. As a result, the reform of the energy-r... [more]
Thermochromic Materials as Passive Roof Technology: Their Impact on Building Energy Performance
Eva Crespo Sánchez, David Masip Vilà
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Absorption, color, Energy Efficiency, reflection, roof coating, surface temperature, thermochromic
Over the last few years, new materials have been developed which a priori, appear to improve passive energy efficiency in buildings. This article focuses on chromogenic devices that allow changing their optical properties in a reversible manner through some external stimulus. The covering of the envelopes may have different textures or colors, which determine the amount of solar radiation absorbed by the material compared to the incident radiation. In buildings with a high percentage of roof relative to façade, the surface finish plays an interesting role in the energy demand. In the present work, the influence of the application of thermochromic materials to the roofs of commercial buildings is analyzed. It has been demonstrated that the application of a thermochromic surface finish can produce savings of annual energy demand between 1% and 12% in kilowatt-hours and kilograms of CO2 and they become more significant for construction solutions with higher transmittances values. Then, th... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Archie’s law, lattice Boltzmann simulation, microfluidic experiments, porous media imaging, reactive transport modelling
Reactive transport modelling is a powerful tool to assess subsurface evolution in various energy-related applications. Upscaling, i.e., accounting for pore scale heterogeneities into larger scale analyses, remains one of the biggest challenges of reactive transport modelling. Pore scale simulations capturing the evolutions of the porous media over a wide range of Peclet and Damköhler number in combination with machine learning are foreseen as an efficient methodology for upscaling. However, the accuracy of these pore scale models needs to be tested against experiments. In this work, we developed a lab on a chip experiment with a novel micromodel design combined with operando confocal Raman spectroscopy, to monitor the evolution of porous media undergoing coupled mineral dissolution and precipitation processes due to diffusive reactive fluxes. The 3D-imaging of the porous media combined with pore scale modelling enabled the derivation of upscaled transport parameters. The chemical react... [more]
Solidified-Air Energy Storage: Conceptualization and Thermodynamic Analysis
Sandro Hiller, Christian Hartmann, Babette Hebenstreit, Stefan Arzbacher
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: air clathrate hydrate, air energy storage, electrical energy storage, thermal energy storage
Grid-scale electrical energy storage (EES) is a key component in cost-effective transition scenarios to renewable energy sources. The requirement of scalability favors EES approaches such as pumped-storage hydroelectricity (PSH) or compressed-air energy storage (CAES), which utilize the cheap and abundant storage materials water and air, respectively. To overcome the site restriction and low volumetric energy densities attributed to PSH and CAES, liquid-air energy storage (LAES) has been devised; however, it suffers from a rather small round-trip efficiency (RTE) and challenging storage conditions. Aiming to overcome these drawbacks, a novel system for EES is developed using solidified air (i.e., clathrate hydrate of air) as the storable phase of air. A reference plant for solidified-air energy storage (SAES) is conceptualized and modeled thermodynamically using the software CoolProp for water and air as well as empirical data and first-order approximations for the solidified air (SA).... Md Jamal Ahmed Shohan, Md Omar Faruque, Simon Y. Foo
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, artificial neural network, load forecasting, long short-term memory, neural prophet, time series forecasting
Load forecasting (LF) is an essential factor in power system management. LF helps the utility maximize the utilization of power-generating plants and schedule them both reliably and economically. In this paper, a novel and hybrid forecasting method is proposed, combining a long short-term memory network (LSTM) and neural prophet (NP) through an artificial neural network. The paper aims to predict electric load for different time horizons with improved accuracy as well as consistency. The proposed model uses historical load data, weather data, and statistical features obtained from the historical data. Multiple case studies have been conducted with two different real-time data sets on three different types of load forecasting. The hybrid model is later compared with a few established methods of load forecasting found in the literature with different performance metrics: mean average percentage error (MAPE), root mean square error (RMSE), sum of square error (SSE), and regression coeffic... A Nash Equilibrium Approach to the Brazilian Seasonalization of Energy Certificates
Fellipe Fernandes Goulart dos Santos, Marcus Vinícius de Castro Lobato, Douglas Alexandre Gomes Vieira, Adriano Chaves Lisboa, Rodney Rezende Saldanha
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Brazilian energy market, game theory, Nash equilibrium, seasonalization
This paper presents a Nash equilibrium approach to model a non-cooperative game that takes place among Brazilian hydro-generating companies in the annual process called “seasonalization”. We have “remade” the seasonalizations that occurred in the period of 2013−2020 by using our model and comparing the financial outcomes with the current ones that resulted from the seasonalizations the generators made each year, with financial improvements in almost every year. By using the Nash equilibrium approach, it is possible to achieve optimal decisions concerning the seasonalization process that were not evident by using traditional methods. This approach is useful for companies willing to enhance their income and to improve their risk management by making better choices in seasonalization.

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: buried hill reservoir, diagenesis, dolomitization, pore evolution, the lower Paleozoic
The Lower Paleozoic carbonate strata experience multi-stage tectonic activity and post-depositional volcanic activity in the Dongying Depression, Bohai Bay basin. These tectonic and magmatic activities have caused the reservoir to undergo severe diagenesis, resulting in strong reservoir heterogeneity. This study aims to identify the characteristics of dolomite, various reservoir spaces’ characteristics, the origin of different types of dolomite, and the porosity evolution. According to crystal size and morphology, dolomites can be divided into three kinds of matrix dolomites and four kinds of dolomite cements. The petrology and geochemistry of the dolomite suggests that matrix dolomite is formed from seawater. The medium-to-coarse-crystalline dolomite cement (D3) has a higher 87Sr/86Sr ratio (0.7119 to 0.7129) and a higher homogenization temperature (>125 °C), suggesting that the fluid for the precipitation of D3 is a mixed fluid formed by hydrothermal fluid eroding the 87Sr-rich felds... A Permanent Magnet Assembling Approach to Mitigate the Cogging Torque for Permanent Magnet Machines Considering Manufacturing Uncertainties
Haipeng Liu, Xin Jin, Nicola Bianchi, Gerd Bramerdorfer, Pengzhong Hu, Chengning Zhang, Yongxi Yang
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cogging torque reduction, combination sequence of uncertainties, motor design, PM uncertainties, robust assembling approach
Conventionally, the small mean and variance of peak-to-peak cogging torque of permanent magnet (PM) machines considering manufacturing uncertainties can be achieved by a robust design or by reducing the uncertainties range. However, the consequent compromise of other design objectives or the increase in the manufacturing costs are frequently inevitable. In this paper, the combination sequence of the uncertainties is highlighted and implemented to achieve a stable performance even for a non-robust design without increasing the cost too much. A PM assembling approach is proposed to mitigate the influences of PM uncertainties on cogging torque by means of combining the uncertainties in a particular sequence, where the effects of uncertainties would counteract each other. Both the singular type of PM uncertainties and the combined ones are considered in the assembling approach. Furthermore, the proposed approach is verified by comparing the cogging torque performance with PM randomly assem... [more]
A Review of the Status of Fossil and Renewable Energies in Southeast Asia and Its Implications on the Decarbonization of ASEAN
Hon Chung Lau, Kai Zhang, Harsha Kumar Bokka, Seeram Ramakrishna
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ASEAN, blue hydrogen, carbon capture and storage, decarbonization, net-zero, Southeast Asia
The ten nations of Southeast Asia, collectively known as ASEAN, emitted 1.65 Gtpa CO2 in 2020, and are among the most vulnerable nations to climate change, which is partially caused by anthropogenic CO2 emission. This paper analyzes the history of ASEAN energy consumption and CO2 emission from both fossil and renewable energies in the last two decades. The results show that ASEAN’s renewable energies resources range from low to moderate, are unevenly distributed geographically, and contributed to only 20% of total primary energy consumption (TPEC) in 2015. The dominant forms of renewable energies are hydropower, solar photovoltaic, and bioenergy. However, both hydropower and bioenergy have substantial sustainability issues. Fossil energies depend heavily on coal and oil and contribute to 80% of TPEC. More importantly, renewable energies’ contribution to TPEC has been decreasing in the last two decades, despite the increasing installation capacity. This suggests that the current rate of... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: abnormal data detection, density clustering, distribution Internet of Things, fuzzy logic, low-voltage terminal unit
As an important part of the ubiquitous power Internet of Things, the distribution Internet of Things can further improve the automation and informatization level of the distribution network. The reliability of the measurement data of the low-voltage terminal unit, as the sensing unit of the sensing layer of the distribution Internet of Things, has a great impact on the fault processing and advanced applications of the distribution Internet of Things. The self-check and the equipment working status monitoring of the main station of the low-voltage terminal unit struggle to identify the abnormality of measurement data. Aiming at this problem, an abnormal data detection and identification recognition method of a distribution Internet of Things monitoring terminal is proposed on the basis of spatiotemporal correlation. First, using the temporal correlation of monitoring terminal data, the proposed composite temporal series similarity measurement criterion is used to calculate the distance... [more]

In hot and dry regions such as the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, the cooling demand is often responsible for more than 70% of electricity consumption, which places a massive strain on the electricity grid and leads to significant emissions. Solar thermal driven Silica-Gel/Water adsorption chillers, used for space cooling, could provide low carbon emission cooling and reduce the reliance on grid electricity. However, a meticulous design is required to make this both economically and environmentally beneficial. This paper aims to evaluate the solar thermal adsorption chiller performance based on large-scale cooling demand through a TRNSYS simulation for 1 year of operation. The proposed system consists of two main parts: first, the solar loop with evacuated tube solar collectors; and second, the adsorption cooling system with a silica-gel/water adsorption chiller. Keywords: cost–benefit analysis, distribution system resilience, empirical distribution function, expected value of resilience enhancement, microgrid, Monte Carlo simulation
Recently, it has been suggested that microgrids (MGs) can improve the resilience of distribution systems. However, predictions about future faults are uncertain. This makes calculating the exact value of the benefits of system resilience enhancement close to impossible at the time of MG planning. Therefore, this paper proposes a framework for MG planning, which focuses on resilience estimation. To consider the uncertainties of future failure events, the proposed method for estimating the resilience utilized the Monte Carlo simulation. In addition, an optimal scenario was estimated using a cost−benefit analysis and constraints on the expected value of resilience enhancement. In the case study, an actual MG installation at D-university was evaluated to obtain the optimal MG planning scenario. The results show that the capacity and installation locations of the distributed generators (DGs) impact the resilience enhancement. The proposed method can effectively derive the optimal MG plannin... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Austrian road network, battery electric vehicles, fast-charging, highway charging infrastructure, long-distance travel, optimization model, placement and sizing of charging stations
Given the ongoing transformation of the transport sector toward electrification, expansion of the current charging infrastructure is essential to meet future charging demands. The lack of fast-charging infrastructure along highways and motorways is a particular obstacle for long-distance travel with battery electric vehicles (BEVs). In this context, we propose a charging infrastructure allocation model that allocates and sizes fast-charging stations along high-level road networks while minimizing the costs for infrastructure investment. The modeling framework is applied to the Austrian highway and motorway network, and the needed expansion of the current fast-charging infrastructure in place is modeled under different future scenarios for 2030. Within these, the share of BEVs in the car fleet, developments in BEV technology and road traffic load changing in the face of future modal shift effects are altered. In particular, we analyze the change in the requirements for fast-charging inf... [more]

The wood industry is an essential part of the economy of some regions in Brazil. Although the excess of wood residue is an environmental concern, it is also an alternative source for electricity generation. This allows for compliance with current legislation to minimize environmental impacts such as strategies to control the emission of pollutants and the decarbonization in the wood exploration activity. Despite this, the thermoelectric plants based on wood residues face problems associated with the low efficiency in generation due to the high moisture content of the residues, and challenges related to transport and storage. In this sense, this work is to evaluate the application of a self-sustainable briquetting plant as an alternative for solving the problems associated with the high moisture content, transport, and storage of wood residues. Keywords: alternative wind technology, capture value, Compressed Air Energy Storage, generation integrated energy storage, intake swept volumes, optimal operation of energy stores, underwater compressed air energy storage, wind system simulation, wind-driven air compression, wind-integrated energy storage
The increasing push for renewable penetration into electricity grids will inevitably lead to an increased requirement for grid-scale energy storage at multiple time scales. It will, necessarily, lead to a higher proportion of the total energy consumed having been passed through storage. Offshore wind is a key technology for renewable penetration, and the co-location of energy storage with this wind power provides significant benefits. A novel generation-integrated energy storage system is described here in the form of a wind-driven air compressor feeding underwater compressed air energy storage. A direct drive compressor would require very high intake swept volumes. To overcome this difficulty, some prior compression is introduced. This paper discusses the constituent technologies for this concept, as well as the various configurations that it might take and the logic behind operating it. Special consideration has been given to the differences resulting from utilising a near-isothermal... [more]
