Local Energy Storage and Stochastic Modeling for Ultrafast Charging Stations
Yorick Ligen, Heron Vrubel, Hubert Girault
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric vehicle (EV), Energy Storage, fast charging station, stochastic charging demand
Multi-stall fast charging stations are often thought to require megawatt-range grid connections. The power consumption profile of such stations results in high cost penalties due to monthly power peaks and expensive linkage fees. A local energy storage system (ESS) can be used to address peak power demands. However, no appropriate sizing method is available to match specific constraints, such as the contracted power available from the grid and the projected recharging demand. A stochastic distribution of charging events was used in this paper to model power demand profiles at the station, with a one minute resolution. Based on 100 simulated months, we propose an optimum number of charging points, and we developed an algorithm to return the required local ESS capacity as a function of the available grid connection. The role of ESSs in the range of 100 kWh to 1 MWh was studied for all stations with up to 2000 charging events per week. The relevance of ESS implementation was assessed alon... [more]

Keywords: Energy Storage, heat losses, molten salt, temperature distribution
Two-tank molten salt heat storage systems are considered to be the most mature thermal storage technology in solar thermal power plants. As the key part of the system, the thermal performance of molten salt tanks is of great importance. An experimental thermal storage system with a new type of molten salt as a thermal energy storage medium has been built to investigate the temperature distribution of molten salt inside the tank during the cooling process from 550 °C to 180 °C. The temperature distribution of the salt was obtained, which reveals that temperature stratification appears at the bottom of the tank within the height of 200 mm. The position, with the maximum temperature difference of 16.1 °C, is at the lower edges of the molten salt storage tank. The temperature distribution was also measured to deepen our understanding of the insulation foundation, which shows that the maximum temperature appears at the middle upper part of the foundation and decreases radially. The heat los... [more]

Phase-homogeneous LiFePO4 powders have been synthesized. The content of impurity crystalline phases was less than 0.1%, according to synchrotron diffractometry (SXRD) data. Anisotropic crystallite sizes L¯Vhkl were determined by XRD. A low resistance covering layer of mechanically strong ferric-graphite-graphene composite with impregnated ferric (Fe3+) particles < 10 nm in size increases the cycleability compared to industrial cathodes. In accordance with the corrosion model, the destruction of the Fe3+-containing protective layer of crystallites predominates at the first stage, and at the second stage Fe escapes into the electrolyte and to the anode. The crystallite size decreases due to amorphization that starts from the surface. The rate capability, Q(t), has been studied as a function of L¯Vhkl, of the correlation coefficients rik between crystallite sizes, of the Li diffusion coefficient, D, and of the electrical relaxation time, τel. For the test cathode with a thickness of 8... [more]

Keywords: design of experiments, Energy Storage, Modelling, Optimization, regression analysis, scientific framework, Simulation, tool chain
Since existing energy system models often represent storage behavior in a simplified way, in this work, a tool chain for deriving consistent storage model parameters for optimization models is developed. The aim of our research work is to identify what are non-negligible influences on the the technical characteristics and dynamic behavior of the storage, to quantify the effect of these influences, and represent these effects in the model. This paper describes the developed tool chain and presents its application using an example. The tool chain consists of the steps “parameter screening”, “dynamic simulation”, “regression analysis” and “refining optimization model”. It is investigated which parameters have an influence on the storage system (here pumped hydroelectric energy storage (PHES)), how the storage behavior is modeled, which influencing factors have a measurable effect on the system, and how these findings can be integrated into optimization models. The main finding is that in... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: adiabatic compressed air energy storage, Energy Storage, Life Cycle Analysis, renewable energy sources, sustainable energy communities
The aim of this paper is to evaluate the overall life cycle environmental impact of an adiabatic compressed air energy storage (ACAES) system, which is designed to achieve the best match between the power production of a photovoltaic (PV) power plant and the power demand from the final user. The electrical energy demand of a small town, with a maximum power load of about 10 MW, is considered a case study. The ACAES system is designed with a compressor-rated power of about 10 MW and charging and discharging times of 10 and 24 h, respectively. Different sizes of the PV plant, ranging from 20 to 40 MWp, and two different solutions for the compressed air storage, an underground cavern, and a gas pipeline, are analyzed. The aim of this analysis is to compare the impacts on human health, ecosystem quality, climate change, and resource consumption of the PV power generation plant and the integrated PV-ACAES system with those of a reference scenario in which the end user demand is met entirely... Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Energy Storage, intermittent power supply system, power supply efficiency, supercapacitor
To solve the challenge of low efficiency and high operation cost caused by intermittent high-power charging in an energy storage tram, this work presents a collaborative power supply system with supercapacitor energy storage. The scheme can reduce the peak power of the transformer, therefore reducing the grid-side capacity and improving the efficiency. However, there is a lack of quantitative analysis on the performance improvement of the solution. The energy efficiency models of critical components are proposed to evaluate the efficiency of the system, and energy efficiency optimization is conducted. Taking an operational tram line as an example, the improved charging efficiency and reduced operating costs are derived. Further, the ground energy storage capacity is designed and implemented. The measured data demonstrates that the energy efficiency of the optimized charging system is improved, which proves its effectiveness and practicability.

Keywords: concentrated solar power, Energy Storage, levelized cost of electricity, thermionic energy conversion, thermoelectric generation
Small-size concentrated solar power (CSP) plants are presently not diffused due to a too-high levelized cost of electricity (LCoE), contrarily to CSP plants with capacity >100 MW, which provide LCoE < 20 cEUR/kWh. The integration of solid-state converters within CSP plants can enhance the scalability and economic competitiveness of the whole technology, especially at smaller scales, since the conversion efficiency of solid-state converters weakly depends on the size. Here a system with a high-temperature thermionic energy converter (TEC), together with an optical concentrator designed to be cheap even providing high concentration ratios, is proposed to improve the cost-effectiveness of CSP plants, thus achieving conditions for economic sustainability and market competitiveness. This is possible since TEC can act as a conversion topping cycle, directly producing electricity with a possible conversion efficiency of 24.8% estimated by applying realistic conditions and providing useful... Keywords: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), design optimization, Energy Storage, heat sinks, power converters, Surrogate Model
As forced-air cooling for heat sinks is widely used in the cooling design of electrical and electronic equipment, their thermal performance is of critical importance for maintaining excellent cooling capacity while reducing the size and weight of the heat sink and the equipment as a whole. This paper presents a method based on the combination of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation and surrogate models to optimize heat sinks for high-end energy storage converters. The design takes the thermal resistance and mass of the heat sink as the optimization goals and looks for the best design for the fin height, thickness and spacing, as well as the base thickness. The analytical and numerical results show that the thermal resistance and mass of the heat sink are reduced by the proposed algorithms, as are the temperatures of the heating elements. Test results verify the effectiveness of the optimization method combining CFD simulation with surrogate models.

Deep geothermal resources for heat supply and waste heat potentials were assessed and measured for a high-temperature dairy plant. For the industrial waste heat, a borehole heat exchanger (BHE) seasonal storage was configured and simulated after an extensive investigation of shallow geothermal resources. We developed a concept for the subsequent use of the residual and waste heat from the plant in a low-temperature heating and cooling (LTHC) grid for the neighbouring former military camp “Martinek-Kaserne” with a future use as mixed-use urban quarter were investigated in two projects. The modelling of the deep geothermal resources showed that of the three potential reservoirs one is most feasible for geothermal heat supply with temperatures between 129 and 146 °C, which could be used with a high-temperature heat pump for process heat. The waste heat in all sub-processes of the dairy plant were measured over 18 months to identify the most suitable waste heat streams with regard to tempe... [more]

Decarbonisation of the energy sector is becoming increasingly more important to the reduction in climate change. Renewable energy is an effective means of reducing CO2 emissions, but the fluctuation in demand and production of energy is a limiting factor. Liquid hydrogen allows for long-term storage of energy. Hydrogen quality is important for the safety and efficiency of the end user. Furthermore, the quality of the hydrogen gas after liquefaction has not yet been reported. The purity of hydrogen after liquefaction was assessed against the specification of Hydrogen grade D in the ISO-14687:2019 by analysing samples taken at different locations throughout production. Sampling was carried out directly in gas cylinders, and purity was assessed using multiple analytical methods. The results indicate that the hydrogen gas produced from liquefaction is of a higher purity than the starting gas, with all impurities below the threshold values set in ISO-14687:2019. Relative ANFIS will take over to greatly boost resilience during times of crisis, power savings, and routine operations. A bidirectional converter connects the battery in order to keep the DC link stable and allow energy displacement due to changes in generation and consumption. When combined with the ANFIS algorithm, PV can be used to meet precise power needs. This means it c... [more]

Although alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) is the most widespread technology for hydrogen production by electrolysis, its electrochemical and fluid dynamic optimization has rarely been addressed simultaneously using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation. In this regard, a two-dimensional (2D) CFD model of an AWE cell has been developed using COMSOL® software and then experimentally validated. The model involves transport equations for both liquid and gas phases as well as equations for the electric current conservation. This multiphysics approach allows the model to simultaneously analyze the fluid dynamic and electrochemical phenomena involved in an electrolysis cell. The electrical response was evaluated in terms of polarization curve (voltage vs. current density) at different operating conditions: temperature, electrolyte conductivity, and electrode-diaphragm distance. For all cases, the model fits very well with the experimental data with an error of less than 1% for the po... [more]

Keywords: drop control, Energy Storage, primary frequency regulation, virtual inertial control
In order to solve the capacity shortage problem in power system frequency regulation caused by large-scale integration of renewable energy, the battery energy storage-assisted frequency regulation is introduced. In this paper, an adaptive control strategy for primary frequency regulation of the energy storage system (ESS) was proposed. The control strategy combined virtual droop control, virtual inertial control, and virtual negative inertial control. The virtual inertial control was used to reduce the frequency change rate, and the virtual droop control was used to reduce the steady-state frequency deviation. The virtual droop control and the virtual inertia control were adopted in the frequency deterioration stage to slow down the frequency drop. While in the frequency recovery stage, the virtual negative inertia control worked together with the virtual droop control to accelerate the frequency recovery. Besides, the coefficients of the control methods were related to the state of ch... [more]

This work explores the development of a home energy management system (HEMS) that uses weather and market forecasts to optimize the usage of home appliances and to manage battery usage and solar power production. A Moving Horizon Estimation (MHE) application is used to find the unknown home model parameters. These parameters are then updated in a Model Predictive Controller (MPC) which optimizes and balances competing comfort and economic objectives. Combining MHE and MPC applications alleviates model complexity commonly seen in HEMS by using a lumped parameter model that is adapted to fit a high-fidelity model. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) on/off behaviors are simulated by using Mathematical Program with Complementarity Constraints (MPCCs) and solved in near real time with a non-linear solver. Removing HVAC on/off as a discrete variable and replacing it with an MPCC reduces solve time. The results of this work indicate that energy management optimization significa... [more]

Keywords: building envelope, dynamic exergy analysis, Energy Storage
As a measure of energy “quality”, exergy is meaningful for comparing the potential for thermal storage. Systems containing the same amount of energy could have considerably different capabilities in matching a demand profile, and exergy measures this difference. Exergy stored in the envelope of buildings is central in sustainability because the environment could be an unlimited source of energy if its interaction with the envelope is optimised for maintaining the indoor conditions within comfort ranges. Since the occurring phenomena are highly fluctuating, a dynamic exergy analysis is required; however, dynamic exergy modelling is complex and has not hitherto been implemented in building simulation tools. Simplified energy and exergy assessments are presented for a case study in which thermal storage determines the performance of seven different wall types for utilising nocturnal ventilation as a passive cooling strategy. Keywords: alkaline electrolysis, Energy Storage, stainless steel, titanium nitride
The use of hydrogen gas as a means of decoupling supply from demand is crucial for the transition to carbon-neutral energy sources and a greener, more distributed energy landscape. This work shows how simple commercially available titanium nitride coatings can be used to extend the lifetime of 316 grade stainless-steel electrodes for use as the cathode in an alkaline electrolysis cell. The material was subjected to accelerated ageing, with the specific aim of assessing the coating’s suitability for use with intermittent renewable energy sources. Over 2000 cycles lasting 5.5 days, an electrolytic cell featuring the coating outperformed a control cell by 250 mV, and a reduction of overpotential at the cathode of 400 mV was observed. This work also confirms that the coating is solely suitable for cathodic use and presents an analysis of the surface changes that occur if it is used anodically.

Keywords: Energy Storage, hybrid multilevel converters, modular multilevel converter (MMC), multilevel converters
Modular and cascaded multilevel converters provide a functional solution for the integration of energy storage systems (ESSs). This paper develops a hybrid multilevel converter based on the modular multilevel converter (MMC) that can be functionally extended with partial embedded ESS as a fraction of the overall converter power rating. The configuration, which can operate as a typical DC-AC converter, enables multi-directional power flow between the DC- and AC-side of the converter, as well as the embedded energy storage elements. The use of a three-phase flying-capacitor submodule eliminates the second-order harmonic oscillations present in modular cascaded multilevel converters. Current, voltage and power control are discussed in the paper while simulation results illustrate the operation of the hybrid MMC as a DC-AC converter in a typical inverter application and the additional functions and control of the embedded ESS.

The extended describing function (EDF) is a well-known method for modelling resonant converters due to its high accuracy. However, it requires complex mathematical formulation effort. This paper presents a simplified non-linear mathematical model of series-series (SS) compensated inductive power transfer (IPT) system, considering zero-voltage switching in the inverter. This simplified mathematical model permits the user to derive the small-signal model using the EDF method, with less computational effort, while maintaining the accuracy of an actual physical model. The derived model has been verified using a frequency sweep method in PLECS. The small-signal model has been used to design the voltage loop controller for a SS compensated IPT system. The designed controller was implemented on a 3.6 kW experimental setup, to test its robustness.
