February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electro-hydraulic coupling, electro-hydraulic servo pump control system, simulation study, system partition
Electro-hydraulic servo pump control belongs to an electro-hydraulic coupling motion control system, which involves the mutual penetration and integration of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, control, and other disciplines, as well as the time-varying, uncertain, multisource, and multifield problems of the internal and external excitation of the system, which makes the electro-hydraulic servo pump control system have the characteristics of a complex model, strong coupling, nonlinearity, and time-variation, resulting in the low accuracy and poor dynamic characteristics of the system. This paper takes a servo motor quantitative pump hydraulic cylinder load as the main dynamic line; divides the electro-hydraulic servo pump control system into a motor pump unit, a hydraulic transmission unit and a power output unit; analyzes its electromechanical coupling characteristics, pressure flow coupling characteristics, and mechanical−hydraulic coupling characteristics, respectively; studies the m... Optimization of Water Injection Strategy before Re-Stimulation Considering Fractures Propagation
Guangcong Ren, Xinfang Ma, Shicheng Zhang, Yushi Zou, Guifu Duan, Qiyong Xiong
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: frac hit, infill well, parent well, re-stimulation, water injection
Water injection before re-stimulation has a positive effect to mitigate the “frac hit” and increase oil production in tight reservoirs. However, the study of water injection strategy optimization has not been thoroughly investigated. Some conclusions can be found in the existing literature, but the pressure and stress distribution, fractures morphology and oil production were not considered as a whole workflow during the study. In addition, the different reservoir deficit was not considered. Although technical experience and economic benefit have been obtained in some field tests, failed cases still exist. To fill this gap, a series of numerical models are established based on a tight reservoir located in northwest China. Under the different re-stimulation timing, the pressure distribution, stress distribution, and fractures morphology after water injection of different injection/production ratios are calculated, respectively. The oil and water production are predicted. The results sho... [more]

Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: anti-cancer, apoptosis, mitochondrial membrane potential, reactive oxygen species (ROS), Rubus chingii
is a traditional Chinese medicinal herbal that has been used since ancient times for its great dietary and medicinal values. Recent reports have underscored the promising cytotoxic effect of R. chingii extracts against a wide variety of cancer cells. Therefore, in the current study, we aim to explore the anticancer potential of the Rubus chingii ethanolic leaf extract (RcL-EtOH) against non-small cell lung cancer A549 cells. RcL-EtOH efficiently exerted a cytotoxic effect against A549 cells in a dose dependent manner, whilst, it exhibited non-significant toxic effects on normal murine macrophage cells, signifying its safety against normal cells. The reduced viability of A549 cells was reaffirmed by the acridine orange/ethidium bromide double staining, which confirmed the induction of apoptosis in RcL-EtOH-treated A549 cells. In addition, RcL-EtOH instigated the dissipation of mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) with mutual escalation in ROS generation in a dose-dependent manner. Fur... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy loss, high power density, ignition timing, lean-burn characteristics, nitrogen oxides, opposed rotary piston engines
The application of hydrogen fuel in ORP engines makes the engine power density much higher than that of a reciprocating engine. This paper investigated the impacts of combustion characteristics, energy loss, and NOx emissions of a hydrogen-fuelled ORP engine by ignition timing over various equivalence ratios using a simulation approach based on FLUENT code without considering experiments. The simulations were conducted under the equivalence ratio of 0.5~0.9 and ignition timing of −20.8~8.3° CA before top dead centre (TDC). The engine was operated under 1000 RPM and wide-open throttle condition which was around the maximum engine torque. The results indicated that significant early ignition of the ORP engine restrained the flame development in combustion chambers due to the special relative positions of ignition systems to combustion chambers. In-cylinder pressure evolutions were insensitive to early ignition. The start of combustion was the earliest over the ignition timing of −17.3° C... [more]

Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: antimicrobial treatment, bacterial inactivation, biofilms, cutting tools, glow discharge plasma, metal surfaces, plasma-activated aqueous solution, ROS
The development of approaches for the non-thermal sterilization of instruments is an urgent task to ensure the safety of meat industry products, where the use of hot water leads to the formation of condensates and a deterioration in the hygienic condition of the premises. In this study, an installation for sterilizing knives was created, which works by activating aqueous salt solutions with a glow discharge. The power consumption of the installation reactor is only 125−150 Wh. The temperature rise of the sterilizing agent used is about 1.1 ± 0.2 °C/min/L. The effectiveness of the installation for plasma-activation of aqueous solutions of chloride and sodium sulfate by glow discharge (PAW) in relation to the inactivation of microorganisms, including Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimurium, Pseudomonas gessardii and L. monocytogenes, on steel surfaces was evaluated. Samples of stainless steel (parts of knives) were used in two versions (new and artificially aged). Mono- and polyspe... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 utilization, heat integration, intermediate condensation steps, methanol synthesis, plant simulation, power-to-X, product removal, Technoeconomic Analysis
In order to increase the typically low equilibrium CO2 conversion to methanol using commercially proven technology, the addition of two intermediate condensation units between reaction steps is evaluated in this work. Detailed process simulations with heat integration and techno-economic analyses of methanol synthesis from green H2 and captured CO2 are presented here, comparing the proposed process with condensation steps with the conventional approach. In the new process, a CO2 single-pass conversion of 53.9% was achieved, which is significantly higher than the conversion of the conventional process (28.5%) and its equilibrium conversion (30.4%). Consequently, the total recycle stream flow was halved, which reduced reactant losses in the purge stream and the compression work of the recycle streams, lowering operating costs by 4.8% (61.2 M€·a−1). In spite of the additional number of heat exchangers and flash drums related to the intermediate condensation units, the fixed investment cos... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acoustic logging, acoustic wave propagation, AWFE, fracture reflection rule, shale reservoir
Based on the acoustic wave finite element (AWFE) method, one can establish an AWFE method and study the influence of mechanical parameters on the shale reservoir acoustic wave propagation characteristics. The different crack characteristics and different crack multi-physical coupling phenomena are studied by using the AWFE method on shale gas reservoir cracks. To calculate the shape and position along the crack near a side borehole, the model parameters are compared with the simulation results. The reflection waveform characteristics of adjacent cracks are studied by using the AWFE method. By considering the borehole axis of symmetry, for an acoustic impedance discontinuous interface on one side of the two-dimensional axisymmetric AWFE, one can establish a borehole cross-crack and an arc cross-crack reflection interface model with the AWFE method. By processing the waveform data received by different receiving points under the same source distance, the parameters, such as the reflectio... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cold storage fires, fire extinguishing, pressure, water mist, water mist temperature
The self-built fine water mist fire extinguishing platform studied the fire extinguishing effect of ultra-fine water mist in cold storage fires. The combustible material selected for our experiments is the cold storage insulation material—polystyrene insulation foam board. The combustion characteristics of the insulation board were studied by pyrolysis analysis. We analyzed the temperature, smoke, and other characteristics of the fire scene when a fire occurs in the cold storage and then manipulated the water mist to carry out the fire extinguishing experiment. Experiments aim to change the particle size and pressure of water mist and study the fire extinguishing efficiency of water mist under different conditions. A thorough analysis was used to determine the particle size range of fine water mist most suited for extinguishing fires in cold storage to offer a theoretical foundation for fire protection design.

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: chemical reactors, mass transfer, multiphase flows, Process Intensification, reactor concepts, scale-up strategies
For the purpose of the intensification of an industrial-scale gas-liquid process, the implementation in an alternative reactor concept is investigated at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) in cooperation with Ehrfeld Mikrotechnik GmbH. Existing process operation data from a bubble column hint at a mass transfer limitation of the gas-liquid reaction. In the project, a jet loop reactor (JLR) is chosen to increase the specific interfacial area between gas and liquid, and thus increase mass transfer, while keeping the reactor system mechanically simple and low-maintenance. For the investigation, a laboratory scale reactor has been designed on the basis of an existing industrial scale process and scaled according to a pilot scale reactor available at TUHH. For scaling, geometric similarity is desired, while specific energy dissipation rate and volumetric gas input are kept constant for the chosen scale-up strategy. Between the two different scales, the reactors are successfully charact... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: fuzzy logic, incremental conductance, interval type 2 fuzzy, maximum power point tracking (MPPT), partial shading condition (PSC), Perturb and Observe (P and O), photovoltaic system (PV)
Photovoltaic systems (PV) are becoming more popular as a way to make electricity because they offer so many benefits, such as free solar irradiation to harvest and low maintenance costs. Moreover, the system is environmentally friendly because it neither emits noxious gases nor generates environmental noise. Consequently, during the operation of a PV system, the working environment is free of all types of pollution. Despite the aforementioned advantages, a photovoltaic (PV) system’s performance is significantly impacted by the fluctuation in electrical charges from the panel, such as shading conditions (PSC), weather conditions, and others, which significantly lowers the system’s efficiency. To operate the PV modules at their peak power, maximum-power point tracking (MPPT) is employed. As a result of the various peaks present during fluctuating irradiance, the P-V curves become complex. Traditional methods, such as Perturb and Observe (P and O) have also failed to monitor the Global Ma... [more]

In order to improve the operation performance of the multi-stage double-suction centrifugal pump and reduce the internal energy loss of the pump, this paper proposes a single-objective optimization design method based on the non-hierarchical response surface methodology (RSM) and the multi-island genetic algorithm (MIGA). Nine parameters, such as the blade outlet width and blade wrap angle, were used as design variables, and the optimization objective was efficiency under design conditions. In total, 149 sets of valid data were obtained under the Latin hypercube sampling method (LHS), the corresponding thresholds were set for efficiency and head, and 99 sets of valid data were obtained. A cross-validation analysis of the sieved data was carried out based on non-hierarchical RSM, global optimization of the efficiency was carried out using MIGA, and numerical verification was carried out via CFD. The research results show that compared with hierarchical RSM, non-hierarchical RSM can appr... [more]

Keywords: gasification, kinetics model, lipid-extracted algae, Syngas, thermogravimetric analysis
A thermal behavior study of lipid-extracted Nannochloropsis gaditana (LEA) was performed in a thermogravimetric analyzer. The study was performed by heating the sample under different heating rates (5, 10, and 15 °C/min) from room temperature to 1000 °C using N2 gas as the medium. This is crucial for thermal stability studies in a kinetic control regime. The following three stages of chemical decompositions were found: (1) moisture removal (2) devolatilization (3) fixed carbon decomposition; maximum decomposition was observed at the second stage. Activation energies of the LEA were studied using the Flynn−Wall−Ozawa model and Kissinger−Akahira−Sunose model. Main sample decomposition was observed from 100−700 °C during volatile matter evaporation. The thermal behavior study findings were used for the gasification of the sample with air to study the effect of varying reaction parameters on the compositions of the synthesis gas yield. Maximum H2 yield was found at 700 °C and 0.7 g, which... [more]

Keywords: consumption value, consumption willingness, green design, kid’s toy, product life cycle
In promoting the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), increasing attention has been given to environmental pollution and abnormal climate issues. In particular, a large number of products made of plastic materials have caused harm to the environment. Secondly, with the improvement of average spending power, many parents are more willing to buy toys for their children. However, the lifespan of kid’s toys is often short, and most materials are made of plastic, which also causes issues as they are not easy to break down and are difficult to recycle. This study investigates the concept of the product life cycle in kid’s toys and explores the decision-making factors of green design. First, analysis and induction were conducted through literature collection. Through semi-structured interviews with experts, the design dimensions related to the green design of kid’s toys and the elements that affect the willingness of consumption by consumption values and behavior were obtained. Keywords: flame-holder, low pressure, low velocity region, NS-DBD, plasma flow control, recirculation zone, residence time
Flame holders are widely used in ramjet combustors. We propose using surface nanosecond-pulsed surface-dielectric-barrier-discharge (NS-DBD) to manipulate the flame-holder flow field experimentally. The electrical characteristics, induced flow performance, and temperature distribution of NS-DBD were investigated via the electrical and optical measurement system. In the filamentary discharge mode, the discharge energy rose with decrease of the ambient pressure. The discharge pattern of NS-DBD changed from filamentous to uniform around 5 kPa. Starting-vortex intensity and jet-flow angle relative to the wall increased at low pressure. The recirculation zone was asymmetrical at pressures above 60 kPa. The recirculation zone’s area and length were smaller at lower pressures, but when the actuator was operating, the recirculation zone was nearly 11.8% longer. The vorticity increased with pressure. When the pulse width was 300 ns, the actuator had the greatest effect, and the low velocity reg... [more]

Keywords: axial loads and radial loads, downhole robot actuator, elastic deformation errors, fatigue life, load distribution, PRSM
This paper designs a new class of actuators for the downhole traction robot system to achieve high-accuracy transmission, which is realized by the planetary roller screw mechanism (PRSM). As the downhole environment is a non-structure one, which increases the difficulty of the load analyses and distributions of the downhole robot system to complete a predesigned mission. Traditional achievements about the mechanical behavior analyses of PRSM ignore the effects of radial loads and torque elastic deformation errors, which are inevitable for the downhole robot actuator, and the results of which would affect the load distribution and fatigue life of the PRSM-aided actuator. To assist the complex task, in this study the mechanical behavior analyses of PRSM for the downhole robot system are investigated by considering axial loads, torque elastic deformation errors, and radial loads. Moreover, the calculation models for contact load distribution and fatigue life are established by utilizing t... [more]

Keywords: distributed flexible job shop scheduling, fuzzy processing time, fuzzy transfer time, memetic algorithm, mutiobjective, variable neighborhood search, weight vector
Most studies on distributed flexible job shop scheduling problem (DFJSP) assume that both processing time and transmission time are crisp values. However, due to the complexity of the factory processing environment, the processing information is uncertain. Therefore, we consider the uncertainty of processing environment, and for the first time propose a multiobjective distributed fuzzy flexible job shop scheduling problem with transfer (MO-DFFJSPT). To solve the MO-DFFJSPT, a hybrid decomposition variable neighborhood memetic algorithm (HDVMA) is proposed with the objectives of minimizing the makespan, maximum factory load, and total workload. In the proposed HDVMA, the well-designed encoding/decoding method and four initialization rules are used to generate the initial population, and several effective evolutionary operators are designed to update populations. Additionally, a weight vector is introduced to design high quality individual selection rules and acceptance criteria. Then, t... [more]

Keywords: calcination, heat transfer, kiln model, numerical simulation, rotary kiln
A 2D axisymmetric computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model, coupled to a 1D bed model, has been developed to capture the key processes that occur within rotary lime kilns. The model simulates the calcination reaction using a shrinking core model, and predicts the start of calcination and the degree of calcination at the end of the kiln. The model simulates heat transfer due to radiation, convection and conduction between the gas, wall, chains, and bed. The 2D gas and 1D bed models are coupled by mass and heat sinks to simulate heat transfer, evaporation, and the calcination reaction. The model is used to simulate two industrial kilns, one wet and one dry. The steady-state simulation results are compared to mill data, and good agreement is found. A sensitivity analysis is also presented, to obtain insight on how operating conditions and model variables impact the calcination location and degree of calcination.
