February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: collaborative allocation, COVID-19, emergency medical materials, IAGA, multiple regions, Yangtze River Delta of China
Medical materials are the most important, fundamental resources necessary for emergency relief of major infectious disease disasters. The scientific and optimal allocation of emergency medical materials is the key to reducing casualties and losses in epidemic regions, and to improving the effectiveness and efficiency of rescue operations. In response to the cross-border characteristics of major infectious diseases, the imbalance of material storage, and the differences of supply across regions, a multi-objective optimization model for a multi-regional collaborative allocation of emergency medical materials was developed. Then, an improved adaptive genetic algorithm (IAGA) was designed and applied to solve the proposed model. Finally, a case study of the collaborative response to the COVID-19 epidemic in the Yangtze River Delta of China was conducted for model verification. The results show that collaborative allocation can improve the material satisfaction rate at demand points, especi... [more]

Effect of Shear Flow on Drag Reducer Performance and Its Microscopic Working Mechanism
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: drag reducer for slick water fracturing fluid, grain size distribution, micro-mechanism of shear failure, rheological properties, shear failure
As the development of unconventional oil and gas resources goes deeper, the stimulation of reservoirs goes deeper year by year. Flow in longer wellbores poses a challenge to the stability of drag-reduction performance of fracturing fluid. However, at present we have limited understanding of the mechanism of drag-reduction damage caused by shear flow, especially the microscopic mechanism. Therefore, in this work, the variation pattern of drag reducer solution performance with shear rate has been analyzed by using a high precision loop flow drag test system. The test results show that there is a critical shear rate for the performance damage of the drag reducer solution, and high strength shear flow and cumulative shear flow time are the main factors leading to the performance degeneration of the drag reducer. Based on the nanometer granularity distributions, rheological properties and microscopic structures observed with a transmission electron microscope of drag reducer solutions subje... [more]

Identification of Four Chicken Breeds by Hyperspectral Imaging Combined with Chemometrics
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: chicken, k-nearest neighbor, Modelling, support vector machine, variable selection
The current study aims to explore the potential of the combination of hyperspectral imaging and chemometrics in the rapid identification of four chicken breeds. The hyperspectral data of four chicken breeds were collected in the range of 400−900 nm. Five pretreatment methods were used to pretreat the original spectra. The important characteristic wavelength variables were extracted by random frog (RF), successive projection algorithm (SPA), and competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) algorithms. The classification models were established by using support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), and partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). The results showed that the mean normalization pretreatment method was preferable, and overall classification accuracy of SVM-based models was higher than that of KNN-based and PLS-DA-based models. The correct classification rate (CCR) of the full-spectrum SVM model (Full-SVM) could reach 96.25%. The SPA method extracted 13... [more]

Study on Gaseous Chlorobenzene Treatment by a Bio-Trickling Filter: Degradation Mechanism and Microbial Community
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: bio-trickling filter, chlorobenzene, mass transfer kinetics, microbial communities, pharmaceutical and chemical industry
Large-flow waste gas generated from the pharmaceutical and chemical industry usually contains low concentrations of VOCs (volatile organic compounds), and it is also the key factor that presents challenges in terms of disposal. To date, due to the limitations of mass transfer rate and microbial degradation ability, the degradation performance of VOCs using the biological method has not been ideal. Therefore, in this study, the sludge from a chlorobenzene-containing wastewater treatment plant was inoculated into our experimental bio-trickling filter (BTF) to explore the feasibility of domestication and degradation of gaseous chlorobenzene by highly active microorganisms. The kinetics of its mass transfer reaction and microbial community dynamics were also discussed. Moreover, the main process parameters of BTF for chlorobenzene degradation were optimized. The results showed that the degradation effect of chlorobenzene reached more than 85% at an inlet concentration of chlorobenzene 700... [more]

Topology-Based Initialization for the Optimization-Based Design of Heteroazeotropic Distillation Processes
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: heteroazeotropic distillation, multi-objective optimization, Optimization, process design, sensitivity analysis, solvent screening
Distillation-based separation processes, such as extractive or heteroazeotropic distillation, present important processes for separating azeotropic mixtures in the chemical and biochemical industry. However, heteroazeotropic distillation has received much less attention than extractive distillation, which can be attributed to multiple reasons. The phase equilibrium calculations require a correct evaluation of phase stability, while the topology of the heterogeneous mixtures is generally more complex, comprising multiple azeotropes and distillation regions, resulting in an increased modeling complexity. Due to the integration of distillation columns and a decanter, even the simulation of these processes is considered more challenging, while an optimal process design should include the selection of a suitable solvent, considering the performance of the integrated hybrid process. Yet, the intricate mixture topologies largely impede the use of simplified criteria for solvent selection. To... [more]

Research on Pore Pressure Detection While Drilling Based on Mechanical Specific Energy
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: compound drilling, drill string mechanics, effective stress, formation pore pressure, mechanical specific energy
The detection of the formation of pore pressure while drilling is of great importance to ensure safe drilling operations. At present, the dc-exponent concept is mainly used to detect pore pressure while drilling. The dc-exponent concept is based on the theory of shale compaction, which is limited when used in carbonate rocks. A mechanical specific energy (MSE)-based method is proposed to detect pore pressure in deep, complex intervals. The method is based on the theory that the energy consumed by the bit to break and remove a unit volume of rock can reflect the effective stress and pore pressure of the rock in situ. In this paper, a torque and weight on bit (WOB) transfer model is proposed for estimating the downhole torque and WOB using drill string mechanics. Meanwhile, the rotary speed and torque of the positive displacement motors under compound drilling are considered, and the model of total MSE under compound drilling is modified. The MSE-based method was used to estimate the por... [more]

Use of TrochodendronAralioides Extract as Green Corrosion Inhibitor for Mild Steel in 1M HCl Solutions
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Adsorption, AFM, corrosion, electrochemical studies, mild steel, SEM-EDX, Trochodendron aralioides
Recently, there is an interesting discussion that has transpired around the world about the usage of plant extracts as corrosion inhibitors. We report that to control corrosion in mild steel (MS) specimens in a 1M HCl medium, Trochodendron aralioides (T. aralioides) extract was used as an economical green corrosion inhibitor. The various tests, namely, potentiodynamic polarization, weight loss measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were performed to analyze the inhibition efficiency (IE) of the extract. The highest IE value of 96.42% was seen at 250 ppm, with the IE% increasing as the extract concentration increased. Potentiodynamic polarization suggests that T. aralioides plant extract acts as a mixed-type inhibitor. UV−visible (UV−Vis) and FT-IR spectroscopy were performed with the inhibitor to study the adsorption mechanism and surface analysis of the specimen, respectively. The results revealed that plant extracts form a protective film on the surface of the... [more]

Optimization of Two-Dimensional Extended Warranty Scheme for Failure Dependence of a Multi-Component System with Improved PSO−BAS Algorithm
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: evolutionary algorithms, extended warranty decision, failure dependence, multi-component systems, preventive maintenance, two-dimensional warranty
Human society is entering the era of Industry 4.0; engineering systems are becoming more complex, which increases the difficulties of maintenance support work. Failure dependence exists widely in multi-component systems. In this work, a model of two-dimensional (2D) warranty decision making was constructed by using a failure-dependence analysis for multi-component systems and by considering the extended warranty cost and the system availability. The decision was to cut the warranty cost as much as possible for manufacturers, while the constraint condition was the minimum acceptable availability for the customer. The model combined preventive maintenance as well as corrective maintenance strategies. Under the condition that the multi-component system is replaced upon the expiration of the extended warranty (EW), the optimal 2D EW duration and preventive maintenance interval could be obtained through the model. In a case analysis, the optimal EW scheme for the gearbox of an electric mult... [more]

Experimental Research and Practice of Mineral Separation from Flotation Tailings Based on Self-Spinning Hydrocyclones
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: flotation tailings, numerical simulation, rotation speed, self-spinning hydrocyclone, tailings separation and purification
The high-ash tailings produced by flotation contains a large number of minerals that can be recycled. However, as the separation and purification technology for flotation tailings is not mature and separation efficiencies are low, it is generally treated as separation waste, resulting in the waste of mineral resources. In view of this phenomenon, the particle size composition and density composition of high-ash minerals in flotation tailings of coal slime as well as the type and content of mineral elements were measured. It was determined that the main mineral composition is quartz, and there is also a certain amount of chlorite (silicate mineral). A self-spinning hydrocyclone used for flotation tailings separation and purification was designed, and numerical simulation was carried out by fluent software. The internal flow field-, tangential velocity-, and axial velocity-distribution characteristics of the hydrocyclone at different rotational speeds were investigated. The physical mode... [more]

Surface-Passivated Single-Crystal Micro-Plates for Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: defect, perovskite, single crystal, solar cell, surface passivation
Perovskite solar cells (PeSCs) prepared with single crystals (SCs) ideally exhibit higher power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) because they possess a lower density of structural imperfection and superior charge transport. However, the density of the surface defects on the SCs is still very high, thereby inevitably affecting the device performance. Herein, perovskite single-crystal micro-plates were grown on a hole-transporting material, poly[bis(4-phenyl)(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl) amine], through a space-limited inverse temperature crystallization method. The surfaces of the as-prepared SCs were passivated using trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) during the device fabrication to alleviate the impact of surface defects. The PCE values are averagely improved from 11.90 ± 0.30% to 14.76 ± 0.65% after the surface passivation; the champion device even exhibits a PCE of 15.65%. The results from photoluminescence and hole-only devices reveal that TOPO treatments effectively reduce the number of surf... [more]

Developing an Anomaly Detection System for Automatic Defective Products’ Inspection
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: anomaly detection, deep learning, image processing
Since unqualified products cause enterprise revenue losses, product inspection is essential for maintaining manufacturing quality. An automated optical inspection (AOI) system is an efficient tool for product inspection, providing a convenient interface for users to view their products of interest. Specifically, in the screw manufacturing industry, the conventional methods are the human visual inspection of the product and for the inspector to view the product image displayed on the dashboard of the AOI system. However, despite the inspector and the approach used, inspection results strongly depend on the inspector’s experience. Moreover, machine learning algorithms could improve the efficiency of human visual inspection, thus addressing the above problem. Based on these facts, we improved anomaly detection efficiency during product inspection, using product image data from the AOI system to obtain valuable information. This study notably used the visual geometry group network, Incepti... [more]

Diagnostics and Control of Pumping Stations in Water Supply Systems: Hybrid Model for Fault Operating Modes
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: “data-driven” models, fault diagnostics, fault-tolerant control, hybrid models, pumping stations operation, water supply systems control
This paper indicates the importance and advantages of the application of hybrid models in the control of water supply systems. A range of possibilities provided by this scientific approach is presented in the practical examples related to the fault diagnostics and fault-tolerant control in the pumping station (PS) control systems. It is presented that continuous monitoring and recording of the data of the pumping stations operation processes (electrical parameters such as electrical power, pressure or flow in the pipelines, water levels in the tanks, changes in various discrete states, etc.) could represent a significant resource that can be used to develop various hybrid models using the appropriate “data-driven” techniques. During this process, data are transformed into information, and thereafter, information into knowledge. Based on this knowledge, the control of PS operation can be significantly improved and a significant increase in the user’s satisfaction can be achieved while t... [more]

Analytical Solutions Formulated in the Time Domain for Three-Dimensional Heat Diffusion Equation
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: analytical solutions, heat polynomial, partial differential equation, three-dimensional heat diffusion equation
Two different strategies are provided to generate solutions to the three-dimensional heat diffusion equation. The first strategy is inspired by the well-known one-dimensional heat polynomial, which consists of an infinite set of polynomials, which are solutions to the one-dimensional heat diffusion equation. The second strategy is based on an exponential type function. None of the solutions presented here can be obtained by the method of separation of variables. The mathematical developments proving that, indeed, the particular solutions generated with both strategies satisfy the three-dimensional heat diffusion equation are presented. The analytical solutions are validated by generating the corresponding numerical solutions with the method of finite differences. When comparing both analytical and numerical solutions, it is found that they are identical. In addition, as part of the results, it is found that there are exponential solutions that reproduce the behavior of polynomial solut... [more]

Ionic Polyacrylamides as Stability-Modifying Substances of Soil Mineral Suspensions Containing Heavy Metal Impurities
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: adsorption removal, flocculation, heavy metal, ionic polyacrylamide, layered aluminosilicates, lead(II) and chromium(VI) separation, solid aggregation
The accumulation of heavy metal in soils is a serious environmental problem. The aim of this paper was to compare the adsorption mechanism of ionic polyacrylamides (PAMs)—anionic and cationic with different contents of functional groups, on the surface of clay minerals—montmorillonite (type 2:1) and kaolinite (type 1:1), without and with the presence of heavy metal ions (Cr(VI) or Pb(II)). The dependence of solution pH, structure of mineral, type of PAM, ionic form of heavy metal, as well as order of adsorbates addition on the adsorption efficiency and stability of the clay mineral-polymer-heavy metal system was determined. In addition to adsorption and stability studies, electrokinetic and potentiometric titration measurements were performed. It was shown that the mixed PAM+heavy metal adsorption layers modify the surface properties of clay minerals significantly, which in many cases leads to the effective destabilization of the solid suspension and its separation from the liquid phas... Effects of Coating Parameters of Hot Filament Chemical Vapour Deposition on Tool Wear in Micro-Drilling of High-Frequency Printed Circuit Board
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: coating technology, drilling, high-frequency PCB, hot filament chemical vapor deposition, tool wear
High-frequency and high-speed printed circuit boards (PCBs) are made of ceramic particles and anisotropic fibres, which are difficult to machine. In most cases, severe tool wear occurs when drilling high-frequency PCBs. To protect the substrate of the drills, diamond films are typically fabricated on the drills using hot filament chemical vapour deposition (HFCVD). This study investigates the coating characteristics of drills with respect to different HFCVD processing parameters and the coating characteristics following wear from machining high-frequency PCBs. The results show that the methane concentration, processing time and temperature all have a significant effect on the grain size and coating thickness of the diamond film. The grain size of the film obviously decreases as does the methane concentration, while the coating thickness increases. By drilling high-frequency PCBs with drills with nanocrystalline and microcrystalline grain sizes, it is discovered that drills with nanocry... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 3D modeling, drop-on-demand, droplet, inkjet printhead nozzle, printing process
This article presents a numerical simulation of a printhead model for drop-on-demand (DoD) inkjet printers. A three-dimensional droplet model is provided for the numerical study of inks, ejection parameters, droplet movement, and the analysis of droplet impacts on the surface. This work is devoted to the analysis of different droplet ejection settings during the printing process, when the behavior of the droplet directly affects the accuracy of the printing process itself. A numerical model was also developed to investigate the effect of various settings on droplet stability, including printhead size and nozzle orifice, motion parameters (pulse strength and droplet ejection amplitude) and fluid properties. The results reflect the behavior of the ink droplet over time. The behavior of the drop was tested at different waveform ejection parameters and a mass turnover was observed.

Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: circular economy, complex, iron, peptides, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, supplementation, yeast
Given the importance of iron in human nutrition and the significance of waste and by-product valorisation in a circular economy environment, we investigated the effects of protein and iron concentration on the production yield of iron−peptide complexes from spent Saccharomyces cerevisiae. For this purpose, different amounts of protein and iron were used in the complexation process. The results have shown that higher concentrations, although permitting a faster and larger scale process, provide a significantly lower complexation yield, which deems the process less feasible. This is corroborated by fluorescence analysis, which shows a lower degree of complexation with higher protein concentration. In addition, varying the concentration of iron does not change the quality of formed complexes, as evidenced by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis. The morphology of all samples was also evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Therefore, further studies are nee... [more]
