Research and Application of Surface Throttling Technology for Ultra-High-Pressure Sour Natural Gas Wells in Northwestern Sichuan Basin
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CPA equation of state, hydrate, Northwestern Sichuan Basin, sour natural gas, throttling technology, ultra-high-pressure
The gas reservoirs in the Northwestern Sichuan Basin have great development potential. However, their production efficiency is seriously reduced by the complex surface multistage throttling process and frequent hydrate plugging caused by the ultra-high-pressure sour gas. Considering the prevention and control of hydrates, properly designing the throttling temperature and pressure to optimize the surface production process is the key to solving this problem. First, this work presents a method for predicting the hydrate formation conditions of ultra-high-pressure sour natural gas based on the vdW-P (van der Waals−Platteeuw) model and the CPA (cubic-plus-association) equation of state (EoS) and considering the association between acid gases (H2S, CO2) and H2O. Secondly, the throttling temperature prediction method was developed by coupling the isenthalpic throttling model and the modified Lee−Kesler EoS mixing rule; the maximum throttling pressure difference calculation method was constru... Conversion of Biomass to Chemicals via Electrofermentation of Lactic Acid Bacteria
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biofuels, electrofermentation, ensiling, Fermentation, LAB, lactic acid bacteria, platform precursor chemicals, PPCs
Microbial electrosynthesis is the process of supplying electrons to microorganisms to reduce CO2 and yield industrially relevant products. Such systems are limited by their requirement for high currents, resulting in challenges to cell survival. Electrofermentation is an electron-efficient form of microbial electrosynthesis in which a small cathodic or anodic current is provided to a culture to alter the oxidation−reduction potential of the medium and, in turn, alter microbial metabolism. This approach has been successfully utilised to increase yields of diverse products including biogas, butanediol and lactate. Biomass conversion to lactate is frequently facilitated by ensiling plant biomass with homofermentative lactic acid bacteria. Although most commonly used as a preservative in ensiled animal feed, lactate has diverse industrial applications as a precursor for the production of probiotics, biofuels, bioplastics and platform chemicals. Lactate yields by lactic acid bacteria (LAB)... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: experimental fluid dynamics, wake models, wind turbine wake
We propose an experimental study on the influence of the tip speed ratio on the spatial development of a wind turbine wake. To accomplish this, a scaled wind turbine is tested in a wind tunnel, and its turbulent wake measured for streamwise distances between 1 and 30 diameters. Two different tip speed ratios (5.3 and 4.5) are tested by varying the pitch angle of the rotor blades between the optimal setting and one with an offset of +6∘. In addition, we test two Reynolds numbers for the optimal tip speed ratio, ReD=1.9×105 and ReD=2.9×105 (based on the turbine diameter and the freestream velocity). For all cases, the mean streamwise velocity deficit at the centerline evolves close to a power law in the far wake, and we check the validity of the Jensen and Bastankhah-Porté-Agel engineering wind turbine wake models and the Townsend-George wake model for free shear flows for this region. Lastly, we present radial profiles of the mean streamwise velocity and test different radial models. Ou... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fuel processing, gas clean-up method, Methane Reforming, PEMFC, post-treatment system
Proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are low-temperature fuel cells that have excellent starting performance due to their low operating temperature, can respond quickly to frequent load fluctuations, and can be manufactured in small packages. Unlike existing studies that mainly used hydrogen as fuel for PEMFCs, in this study, methane is used as fuel for PEMFCs to investigate its performance and economy. Methane is a major component of natural gas, which is more economically competitive than hydrogen. In this study, methane gas is reformed by the steam reforming method and is applied to the following five gas post-treatment systems: (a) Case 1—water−gas shift only (WGS), (b) Case 2—partial oxidation reforming only (PROX), (c) Case 3—methanation only, (d) Case 4—WGS + methanation, (e) Case 5—WGS + PROX. Free-Standing Li4Ti5O12/Carbon Nanotube Electrodes for Flexible Lithium-Ion Batteries
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: buckypaper, flexible, free-standing, Li-ion battery, LTO
Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been used in many fields, such as consumer electronics and automotive and grid storage, and its applications continue to expand. Several studies have attempted to improve the performance of LIBs. In particular, the use of high-capacity silicon and tin as anodes has been widely studied. Although anodes composed of silicone and tin have high theoretical capacities, poor electrical conductivity and considerable volume expansion of such anodes deteriorate the LIB performance. Thus, Li4Ti5O12 (LTO), a zero-strain material, has attracted much attention with high cycle stability and rate capability through improved electrical conductivity. However, LTO has the disadvantages of a low electrical conductivity (10−8 to 10−13 S cm−1) and moderate Li+ ion diffusion coefficient (10−9 to 10−16 cm2 s−1). In this study, the flexible and free-standing composite films were fabricated using only LTO and multi-walled carbon nanotube(CNT) with high electrical conductivity a... [more]

Keywords: ammonia, carbon-free fuels, downsizing, e-fuels, spark-ignition engines
Recently, the research interest regarding ammonia applications in energy systems has been increasing. Ammonia is an important hydrogen carrier that can also be obtained starting from renewable energy sources. Furthermore, ammonia can be used as a carbon-free fuel in combustion systems. In particular, the behavior of internal combustion engines (ICEs), fueled by ammonia, needs to be further investigated. The main disadvantage of this kind of fuel is its low laminar flame speed when it is oxidized with air. On the other hand, considering a spark-ignition (SI) engine, the absence of knock phenomena could allow a performance improvement. In this work, a 1D numerical approach was used in order to assess the performance and the operating limits of a downsized PFI SI engine fueled with pure ammonia. Furthermore, the reliability of the 1D model was verified by means of a 3D approach. Both throttled and unthrottled engine operation was investigated. In particular, different boost levels were an... Keywords: demand response, economic assessment, open source, optimisation, regional
In this work, we investigate the economic viability of demand response (DR) as a balancing option for variable renewable energies, such as wind and solar. Our assessment is based on a highly resolved national energy system model for Germany coupled with a regional DR optimisation model. First, this allows us to determine the spatially resolved flexibility demand, e.g., for avoiding transmission grid congestion. Second, a high number of DR technologies from the residential, commercial and industrial sector, as well as sector coupling, can be considered to cover the regional flexibility demand. Our analysis is based on a scenario for 2035 with a 66% share of renewable energy sources in the power generation. The results show that the largest DR capacity is being installed in the west of Germany, an area with a high density of population and industry. All DR units have an aggregated capacity below 100 MW per transmission grid node. For the economic assessment, we further differentiate betw... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: photovoltaic energy, PSAT, STATCOM, voltage stability, wind energy
There are three main parts of an electric power system—power generation, transmission, and distribution. For electric companies, it is a tough challenge to reduce losses of the power system and deliver lossless and reliable power from the generating station to the consumer end. Nowadays, modern power systems are more complex due to gradually increasing loads. In the electrical power system, especially in transmission and distribution networks, there are power losses due to many reasons such as overloading of the line, long distribution lines, low power factors, corona losses, and unsuitable conductor size. The main performance factor of the power system is reliability. Reliability means continuity of the power supply without any interruptions from the generating station to the demand side. Thus, due to these power losses, there are voltage stability problems and economic losses in the electrical system. The voltage stability of the power system can be increased by improving the voltage... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: geochemical modeling, hydraulic fracture, shale reservoirs
Field operations report that at least half of the fracturing fluid used in shale reservoirs is trapped. These trapped fluids can trigger various geochemical interactions. However, the impact of these interactions on well performance is still elusive. We modeled a hydraulic fracture stage where we simulated the initial conditions by injecting the fracturing fluid and shutting the well to allow the fluids to soak into the formation. Our results suggest a positive correlation between the dissolution and precipitation rates and the carbonate content of the rock. In addition, we observed that gas and load recovery are overestimated when geochemical interactions are overlooked. We also observed promising results for sea water as a good alternative fracturing fluid. Moreover, we observed better performance for cases with lower-saline connate water. The reactions of carbonates outweigh the reactions of clays in most cases. Sensitivity analysis suggests that the concentration of SO4, K and Na i... [more]
