Fault Ride-Through Operation Analysis of Doubly Fed Induction Generator-Based Wind Energy Conversion Systems: A Comparative Review
Aftab Ahmed Ansari, Giribabu Dyanamina
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), fault ride-through, renewable energy system, wind energy conversion (WEC) system
In present electrical power systems, wind energy conversion systems based on doubly fed induction generators represent one of the most commonly accepted systems in the global market due to their excellent performance under different power system operations. The high wind energy penetration rate makes it challenging for these wind turbines to follow grid code requirements. All operations of a wind energy system during a dip in voltage require special attention; these operations are critically known as fault ride-through and low voltage ride-through. In this paper, various fault ride-through techniques of doubly fed induction generator-based wind energy conversion systems, such as protective circuitry, reactive power injection, and control methods for transient and steady state operations, have been presented to improve the performance. During system disturbances, protective circuitry or control mechanisms are typically used to limit the over-current of the rotor and the generated inappr... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: compressor-discharge cooler, condensate water, cooling capacity, R32, subcooling
The utilization of condensate water as a compressor-discharge cooler results in subcooling on the condenser outlet. On the other hand, a split-type air conditioner (A/C) with R32 as working fluid can provide higher compressor-discharge temperatures than other refrigerants used in the same A/C. Therefore, A/C working with R32, equipped with a heat exchanger by utilizing waste-condensate water as the compressor-discharge cooler, has promising potential to produce the largest subcooling effect in air-conditioning systems. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of condensate water as the compressor-discharge cooler on the performance of an A/C using R32 as the working fluid with different sizes of heat exchanger. The experimental study was carried out on the A/C with a compressor capacity of 1.1 kW, using three different heat-exchanger lengths, i.e., 18, 20 and 22 cm. The results indicated that longer heat exchangers produced higher degrees of subcooling; the heat exchangers wi... [more]

Keywords: anisotropy, high temperature, oil shale, pore and fracture, thermal conductivity
Due to its sedimentary characteristics and natural fractures, oil shale shows anisotropy in heat transfer characteristics. Moreover, the anisotropic thermal conductivity will change with the temperature. This change in the anisotropic thermal conductivity coefficient affects the temperature field distribution and heating efficiency during the in situ electric heating pyrolysis of oil shale. Therefore, it is very important to study the evolution of the anisotropy thermal conductivity coefficient of oil shale with temperature. In this study, the variation of weight loss and the specific heat of an oil shale with temperature is investigated using a differential scanning calorimeter. The variation of the anisotropic pore and fracture structure of the oil shale with temperature is studied through CT scanning technology. The variation of the anisotropic thermal conductivity with temperature is studied through the hot disk method. Finally, the relationship between the change in the anisotropi... [more]

Keywords: combined heat and power (CHP) technology, combustion chamber, compressor hybrid electric vehicle, control system, distributed generation system, micro gas turbine (MGT), permanent synchronous magnet machine (PMSM), power converter
In recent years, micro turbine technology has become a continuously reliable and viable distributed generation system. The application of distributed energy power generation sources, such as micro gas turbines (MGT), to charge electric vehicles offers numerous technical, economical benefits, and opportunities. MGT are considered as they are smaller than conventional heavy-duty gas turbines. They also are capable of accepting and operating with different fossil fuels in the range of low−high pressure levels as well as co-generation opportunities. The MGT could provide the fast and reliable output power guaranteed and needed for grid stability. This paper provides a mathematical representation, modelling, and simulation of a low-cost fast charging station based on a micro gas turbine and a super capacitor forming altogether a power generation system suitable for use especially as energy source in fast charging stations and dynamic power systems. All the micro gas turbine’s parameters are... [more]

Keywords: biogas, biohydrogen, Energy Efficiency, hydrogen fuel, low-temperature fuel cell, residual methane, waste
The production of low-carbon hydrogen based on renewable energy sources is considered a promising direction in the development of the modern world economy. The purpose of the presented research is to develop technologies and study the processes of converting biogases into hydrogen, as well as its use in low-temperature fuel cells. The methodology for organizing a multi-stage laboratory experiment for obtaining biogas, its purification from impurities and, in the future, the production of biohydrogen was developed based on field studies in Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. The results of modeling studies have shown that during biogas reforming, it is possible to obtain a hydrogen mixture with a hydrogen content of 98% vol and methane 2% vol. Based on the results of the research, the possibility of using the significant potential of “weak” biogas containing methane 30−45% vol to produce biohydrogen (more than 93% vol) was proved. A technique for using biohydrogen in... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hydraulic fracturing, large size phase change proppant, low-temperature curing agent, natural gas hydrate, performance evaluation
The stimulation method of the marine natural gas hydrate (NGH) reservoir through hydraulic fracturing has been proposed to resolve the problem of the low production capacity in the conventional development method of pressure drawdown. Nevertheless, due to the strong plasticity and high argillaceous siltstone content of the marine NGH reservoir, conventional small-particle-size proppant cannot form effective support for fractures after fracturing because of serious embedding in the reservoir. To solve this problem, the large-size phase change proppants were developed in this study. First, an epoxy resin curing system that can reduce curing time to 40 min in low temperature and humid environment was developed. Then, the epoxy resin and curing system was emulsified, and through the optimization of the emulsification process, the particle size of the proppant can be controlled in 0.5−4.5 mm and the cementation between the proppant particles during the curing process can be prevented. Final... [more]

Keywords: modular multilevel converter, phase sequence exchange technology, power angle, power system stability
Power angle stability of power systems is one of the main factors which restricts the power transmission capacity. In order to prevent the power angle instability of power systems, phase sequence exchange (PSE) is a recently developed emergency control technique that reduces the power angle by 120°. This paper proposes a new phase sequence exchange technology based on a modular multi-level converter (MMC). In this paper, the concept of deceleration area ratio is proposed, that is used to characterize the power angle stability of the power system, and the phase sequence exchange theory based on an MMC is analyzed. A phase sequence exchange circuit based on a modular multilevel converter (MMC) is designed. In this paper, the system parameters of the MMC-based PSE are optimized. Finally, a model is developed on PSCAD. The simulation results show that the MMC-based phase sequence exchange technology can effectively improve the power angle stability of the power system.

Keywords: co-production, groundwater chemistry, ionic composition, produced water, water–rock interaction
The geochemical characteristics of water produced from coalbed methane (CBM) wells contain rich information about the associated geology, environment, and production. This study was conducted in the Southern Qinshui Basin, where produced water samples were collected from 10 typical CBM wells and their ionic compositions and water quality parameters were tested. The differences in the chemical characteristics of the produced water between different producing coal seams and between single-seam production wells (SPWs) and multi-seam co-production wells (MCWs) were compared, and the geochemical formation process of the produced water was revealed. The following conclusions were obtained: (1) the water produced samples that were mainly Na-HCO3-type and were generally weakly alkaline and moderately mineralized. The water produced from No. 15 coal seam was more enriched in SO4, Ca, and Mg compared to that of No. 3 coal seam, and the variations were more intense, reflecting a more complex wate... [more]

Keywords: fuzzy theory, multiple-criteria decision modeling, spherical fuzzy sets, supplier evaluation for wind turbines, sustainable sources
The government of Karnataka has resolved to promote and employ an increasing number of alternative fuels, particularly, wind energy. Selecting a windmill supplier is a key decision when developing a wind energy project, and investors must evaluate various qualitative and quantitative variables that interact symmetrically to discover the best source. As a result, a multi-criteria decision-making procedure is applied to choose a wind turbine provider for wind power projects. A variety of approaches have been used to address this judgment process, some of which were predicated on the use of multi-criteria judgment techniques alone or in conjunction with some different multiple-criteria decision approaches. In this study, the researchers advocated selecting windmill producers for geothermal power generation using a judgment method based on a spherical fuzzy system. After the analyses of the last stage of this research, turbine manufacturers for installations could be suggested. The purpose... [more]

Keywords: brines, car battery, CO2 emission, electric vehicles, Extraction, lithium, lithium reserves, lithium-ion battery (LiB), mining, recycling
Lithium, a silver-white alkali metal, with significantly high energy density, has been exploited for making rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LiBs). They have become one of the main energy storage solutions in modern electric cars (EVs). Cobalt, nickel, and manganese are three other key components of LiBs that power electric vehicles (EVs). Neodymium and dysprosium, two rare earth metals, are used in the permanent magnet-based motors of EVs. The operation of EVs also requires a high amount of electricity for recharging their LiBs. Thus, the CO2 emission is reduced during the operation of an EV if the recharged electricity is generated from non-carbon sources such as hydroelectricity, solar energy, and nuclear energy. LiBs in EVs have been pushed to the limit because of their limited storage capacity and charge/discharge cycles. Batteries account for a substantial portion of the size and weight of an EV and occupy the entire chassis. Thus, future LiBs must be smaller and more powerful... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 3D printing, additive manufacturing, minimal surface, TPMS
The design of heat exchangers may change dramatically through the use of additive manufacturing (AM). Additive manufacturing, colloquially known as 3D printing, enables the production of monolithic metal bodies, devoid of contact resistance. The small volume of the exchanger, its lightness of weight, and the reduction of its production costs, compared to conventional methods, make the production of heat exchangers by AM methods conventional technologies. The review study presents a new look at the TPMS as a promising type of developed surface that can be used in the area of heat transfer. (Thus far, the only attractive option. The most important feature of additive manufacturing is the ability to print the geometry of theoretically any topography. Such a topography can be a minimal surface or its extended version—triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS). It was practically impossible to manufacture a TPMS-based heat exchanger with the method of producing a TPMS.) The issues related to th... [more]

Keywords: gas composition, Hydrogen, hydrogen blend, methane number, Natural Gas, Wobbe index
To meet the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, hydrogen as a carbon-free fuel is expected to play a major role in future energy supplies. A challenge with hydrogen is its low density and volumetric energy value, meaning that large tanks are needed to store and transport it. By injecting hydrogen into the natural gas network, the transportation issue could be solved if the hydrogen−natural gas mixture satisfies the grid gas quality requirements set by legislation and standards. The end consumers usually have stricter limitations on the gas quality than the grid, where Euromot, the European association of internal combustion engine manufacturers, has specific requirements on the parameters: the methane number and Wobbe index. This paper analyses how much hydrogen can be added into the natural gas grid to fulfil Euromot’s requirements. An average gas composition was calculated based on the most common ones in Europe in 2021, and the results show that 13.4% hydrogen can be mixed... [more]

Keywords: BEV, CO2 emissions, energy consumption, FCEV, hybrid vehicles
The authors compare the energy consumption and CO2 emissions from vehicles using internal combustion engines (ICE), battery electric vehicles (BEV), fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV), and two types of hybrid vehicles, BEV-ICE hybrid and BEV-FCEV hybrid. This paper considers several scenarios for four countries’ electricity production from primary energy sources to estimate total CO2 release. Energy consumption of the vehicle per 100 km, emissions during manufacturing, battery production, and lifecycle of the vehicle are considered in the total amount evaluation of CO2 released. The results show that with current technologies for battery manufacturing, and a significant proportion of national grid electricity delivered by fossil fuels, BEV is the best choice to reduce carbon emissions for shorter driving ranges. In the case of electricity generation mainly by low-carbon sources, FCEV and BEV-FCEV hybrid vehicles end up with lower carbon dioxide emissions. In contrast, with electricity... [more]

Keywords: Coal, mercury removal, pyrolysis
The main source of mercury (Hg) anthropogenic emissions is the combustion of hard and lignite coal in power plants. Reduction of Hg emissions from coal-based power production systems involves Hg removal from the fuel before combustion/gasification by thermal treatment (i.e., low-temperature pyrolysis). Herein, we present the results of laboratory and bench-scale studies on Hg removal from coal via thermal fuel treatment. The influence of the process temperature and coal residence time in the reaction zone on Hg removal efficiency and fuel parameters is studied. The properties of the process products are analyzed as follows: proximate and ultimate analysis for solids as well as H2, N2, CO, CO2, CH4, organic compounds C2−C5, density, and HHV for gaseous. The results show a substantial reduction of Hg in the fuel using a low-temperature pyrolysis process. At moderate pyrolysis temperature provided Hg removal efficiencies of up to 50% for hard coal and over 90% for lignite, with a moderate... [more]

Keywords: current change rate, doubly-fed induction wind turbines, grey wolf algorithm, grid side current, high voltage ride through
High voltage ride through (HVRT) control strategies for doubly-fed induction wind turbines (DFIG) have mostly focused on the rotor side converter, while the reactive power compensation capability of the grid side converter and the impact of grid side converter current transients have often been ignored on the DC bus voltage and reactive power. Therefore, a control strategy based on grid side current dynamic change characteristics is proposed, which resets the reference values of the grid side active and reactive currents for wind turbine HVRT to ensure partial absorption of reactive power on the grid side. Secondly, the key parameter in the proposed control strategy is optimization to get the most suitable DC bus voltage value with the grey wolf algorithm. Finally, the grid-integrated wind turbine simulation model is built on the MATLAB/SIMULINK and RT-Lab platforms. The simulation test results show that the proposed HVRT control strategy and its parameter optimization method are effec... [more]

Keywords: air-gap relative permeance, back EMF, hybrid electric vehicles, hybrid excitation, separate windings
Aiming to design a generator with high reliability, high efficiency, and especially a constant output voltage over a wide speed range for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), this paper proposes a novel topology of a hybrid excitation doubly salient generator with separate windings (HEDSGSW). The topology herein utilizes a hybrid excitation type of PMs and DC windings to generate parallel magnetic circuits. In addition, PMs are embedded in the magnetic bridge to insulate the excitation windings with armature windings. This design can achieve compactness, efficiency, and especially constant output capability over a wide speed range. The geometry and flux regulation principles, including magnetic flux circuits, are elaborated. After comparing three power generation modes, the most suitable mode, namely, the doubly salient generation 2 (DSG2) mode, is confirmed to ensure a stable voltage output performance. Then, considering the non-uniformity effect of the stator and rotor slots, the no-load... [more]

The proposed anthraquinone-bromate cell combines the advantages of anthraquinone-bromine redox flow batteries and novel hybrid hydrogen-bromate flow batteries. The anthraquinone-2,7-disulfonic acid is of interest as a promising organic negolyte due its high solubility, rapid kinetics of electrode reactions and suitable redox potentials combined with a high chemical stability during redox reactions. Lithium or sodium bromates as posolytes provide an anomalously high discharge current density of order ~A cm−2 due to a novel autocatalytic mechanism. Combining these two systems, we developed a single cell of novel anthraquinone-bromate flow battery, which showed a power density of 1.08 W cm−2, energy density of 16.1 W h L−1 and energy efficiency of 72% after 10 charge−discharge cycles.

Keywords: activated carbon, coffee waste, lithium sulfur batteries, physical adsorption, separator, shuttle effect
A novel approach has been proposed for improving the performance of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) with a carbon-based material as an interlayer between the cathode and separator. With this method, the cross-over of lithium polysulfides (LiPS) to the anode is suppressed, increasing reutilization of the sulfur cathode. In this study, activated carbons (ACs) were prepared using coffee waste as a carbon source and potassium hydroxide (KOH) as an activation agent at various reaction temperatures ranging from 500 to 800 °C. With the rise in heating temperature, the specific surface areas, micro-surface areas, and micro-pore volumes of the AC samples gradually increased. In particular, the AC sample prepared at 800 °C and used as a functional separator for LSB exhibited improved capacity and cycling performance while suppressing the LiPS shuttle effect.

Keywords: diesel particulate filter, non-road mobile machinery, retrofitting
The paper evaluates particulate matter emissions and exhaust gas components from retrofitted engines of non-road vehicles measured under actual operating conditions. The content is divided into three main parts: formation of guidelines, production of the filter and emission tests. The obtained results clearly indicate excess PM and PN emissions from the engine under actual operating conditions when compared to the limits outlined in the type approval standards. Moreover, it was observed that the actual conditions are reflected to a very small extent at the points included in the stationary homologation test cycle. Based on these observations, the authors decided to modify the stationary test cycle. The measured exhaust gas compositions and their mass flow rates were used to create the geometry of the newly developed filter. The paper contains detailed results of the relative specific exhaust emissions of particulate matter and gaseous components at individual engine operating points. T... [more]

A tri-generation system combining cooling, heating, and power generation can contribute to increased system efficiency and thereby reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This study proposed a novel concept using 100-kW polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) as the basis for a tri-generation system with an integrated heat pump and adsorption chiller for greenhouse use. Three configurations of heat pump loop were designed to recover the waste heat from PEMFCs and used either for direct heating or cooling power generation in adsorption cooling. Analyses were carried out in terms of primary energy rate (PER) and exergy efficiencies. Of those investigated, the layout with a heat pump and internal heat exchanger demonstrated the best performance, with PERs of the cooling and heating modes at 0.94 and 0.78, respectively. Additionally, the exergy analysis revealed that the exergies are mostly destroyed at the expansion valve and evaporator due to differences in pressure and temperature. Th... [more]

Keywords: electric consumers, industrial applications, power quality
The quality of electrical energy is of particular importance for power engineering. This study presents an analysis of articles made in the Special Issue “Analysis and Experiments for Electric Power Quality”. As techniques and technology advance, electrical consumers and equipment become more sensitive to disturbances in the electrical network (in particular, low- and medium-voltage). It can lead to costly outages and lost production, which affect productivity. The analyzed articles present interesting technical studies made on industrial and nonindustrial consumers, of low- and medium-voltage, from the point of view of the quality of electricity. Voltage and current harmonics, voltage sags and swells, interruptions, unbalance, and low power factor will lead to higher electricity bills, overloading, and rapid aging of electrical networks and electric equipment. The power quality depends not only on the supplier but also on all consumers connected to the same power network; some can cau... [more]

In response to the key engineering problems of photovoltaic grid-connected inverter cluster resonance suppression affected by grid-connected inverter impedance, in this paper, a control strategy based on a disturbance observer is proposed to dynamically compensate for the damping coefficient of the controlled system and improve the robustness of the system. First, an engineering mathematical model of a 200 MW photovoltaic inverter cluster is established, and the mechanism of the active damping of the cluster inverter influenced by the disturbance is analyzed. Secondly, the capacitor current feedback is utilized to constitute the virtual damping, and the inverter output impedance is reshaped to suppress the resonance peak. Then, a Kalman filter is used to improve the traditional disturbance observer to accurately detect disturbance of the system during the dynamic process of the cluster inverter so as to better adapt to changes in grid impedance and dynamically compensate for the virtua...
