View Factors of Flat Collectors, Including Photovoltaics, Visible to Partial Sky
Joseph Appelbaum, Avi Aronescu
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cross-string rule, diffuse radiation, PV fields, row spacing, sky view factors
The sky view factor of collectors in photovoltaic (PV) fields is a parameter that determines the amount of incident diffuse radiation. The diffuse radiation may contribute significantly to the generated electric energy. PV systems are deployed in multiple rows and separated from each other and from nearby structures. Rows in front and nearby structures may block part of the visible sky to the collectors, thus decreasing the sky view factor. The distance between collectors and objects is an important parameter for the design of photovoltaic systems. The present study develops the expression for sky view factors for cases encountered in deployments of PV fields and presents numerical values for the sky view factors for distances between collectors and from obscuring structures. Sky view factors for flat collectors in the presence of adjacent collectors or structures have not been treated in the literature, besides for simple or common cases. Based on the values of the sky view factor, th... [more]

Keywords: channel, heat transfer, square-winged transverse baffles, thermal performance
The experimental examination of local heat transfer, thermal intensification, friction factors, and thermal performance factors (TPF) in a rectangular channel with square-winged transverse baffles (SW-TB) are presented in this paper. The purpose of this study is to modify the typical transverse baffles (TB) into square-winged transverse baffles (SW-TB) in order to improve the thermal performance and heat transfer rate of the channel. The effects of SW-TBs with various wing attack angles and Reynolds numbers on the heat transfer performance characteristics were examined using a thermochromic liquid crystal sheet. In the experiments, the SW-TBs were attached to the bottom wall of the channel, which had an aspect ratio (W:H) of 3.75:1. The SW-TBs had a width (w) of 150 mm, a square perforated cross-sectional area (a × b) of 8 × 8 mm2, and attack angles (θ) of 0° (solid transverse-baffle), 22.5°, 45°, 67.5°, and 90°. The bottom wall of the channel was evenly heated, while the other walls w... [more]

Keywords: heat transfer, microelectronic cooling, mini-channel heat sink, nanofluid, supercritical carbon dioxide
Mini-channel heatsinks have proven useful in removing high heat fluxes from microelectronic devices. However, further miniaturization of electronic devices requires significant enhancement in the mini-channel heatsinks’ thermohydraulic characteristics, which depend greatly on the coolant and geometrical configuration of the channel. Therefore, the current study explores the potential of mini-channel heatsinks’ using different coolants (water, nanofluid and supercritical carbon dioxide) and various channel configurations. The effect of various channel configurations on the thermohydraulic characteristics of the mini-channel heat sinks is evaluated numerically for different coolants employing three flow rates (17 g/s, 34 g/s and 50 g/s). Hence, the effects of fin height, spacing and thickness, and mass flow rate on the overall heat transfer coefficient (CHT) and pressure drop (ΔP) are reported for the abovementioned coolants. It is found that increasing the mass flow rate increases both... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hydraulic fracturing, particle lateral velocity, particle–particle interaction, proppant settling, stable repulsion
The elevated energy demand and high dependency on fossil fuels have directed researchers’ attention to promoting and advancing hydraulic fracturing (HF) operations for a sustainable energy future. Even though previous studies have demonstrated that the proppant suspension and positioning in slickwater play a vital role during the shut-in stage of the HF operations, minimal experimental work has been conducted on the fundamental proppant−proppant interaction mechanisms, especially a complete mapping of the interactions. This study utilizes high-speed imaging to provide a 2D space- and time-resolved investigation of two-particle (proppant models: 2 mm Ø, 2.6 g·cm−3) interactions during gravitational settling in different initial spatial configurations and rheological properties. The mapping facilitates the identification of various interaction regimes and newly observed particle trajectories. Pure water results at a settling particle Reynolds number (Rep) ~ 470 show an unstable particle−... [more]

Keywords: inverter, multilevel, PWM, SHE, SPWM, T-type, topology
Multilevel inverters (MLI) consist of a wide range of power converters. They have many designs and have been introduced with different circuit topologies such as neutral point clamped, diode clamped, cascaded H-bridges, and flying capacitors. Some of these MLIs have disadvantages, including design complexity, size, and losses due to the large number of switching devices required when they produce many output voltage levels. They are also bulky in size and may require several DC power sources. This paper presents a review of the various topologies of single-phase T-Type MLIs (T-MLIs). These MLIs are used to convert DC power from renewable energy sources (RES)” into AC with a near-sine waveform and low total harmonic distortion (THD). Simple and complex MLI designs are discussed. The major types of modulation techniques are discussed, including sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM), selective harmonic elimination (SHE), and preprogrammed PWM. Various methods of output voltage control... [more]

Keywords: iron–chromium redox flow battery, RM, waste membrane recycling
Iron−chromium redox flow batteries (ICRFB) possess the advantage of low raw material cost, intrinsic safety, long charge−discharge cycle life, good life-cycle economy, and environmental friendliness, which has attracted attention from academia and industry over time. The proton exchange membrane (PEM) is an important part of the ICRFB system, impacting the efficiency and lifetime of the battery. Currently, the most widely used PEMs in the market are per-fluorinated sulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes, which possess high electrolyte stability and achieve the separation of positive and negative electrolytes. In addition, the complex preparation process and extremely high market price limited the usage of PEM in ICRFB. In this paper, we developed a remanufactured membrane (RM) strategy from waste PFSA resins. The RM has higher electrical conductivity and better proton transport ability than the commodity membrane N212. In the cell performance test, the RM exhibits similar coulombic efficiency... [more]

Keywords: bottom-hole pressure, gas compressibility factor, high temperature and high pressure, Natural Gas, southern margin of Junggar Basin, ultra-deep
Gas reservoirs discovered in the southern margin of the Junggar Basin generally have high temperatures (up to 172.22 °C) and high pressures (up to 171.74 MPa). If using the PVT laboratory to get the gas compressibility factor, data from the laboratory are so little that it will not satisfy the demands of reservoir engineering calculations. There are many empirical correlations for calculating the Z-factor; however, these correlations give large errors at high gas reservoir pressures. The errors in estimating the Z-factor will lead to large errors in estimating all the other gas properties such as gas formation volume factor, gas compressibility, and gas in place. In this paper, a new accurate Z-factor correlation has been developed based on PVT data by correcting the high-pressure part of the most commonly used Dranchuk-Purvis-Robinson Correlation. Multivariate nonlinear regression is used to establish the independent variable function of pseudo-critical temperatures and pressures. By... [more]

Keywords: distributed generators, distribution static compensator, distribution system, electric vehicles, power factor
Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly popular due to their inexpensive maintenance, performance improvements, and zero carbon footprint. The electric vehicle’s load impacts the distribution system’s performance as the electric vehicle’s adoption rises. As a result, the distribution system’s dependability depends on the precise location of the electric vehicle charging station (EVCS). The main challenge is the deteriorating impact of the distribution system caused by the incorrect placement of the charging station. The distribution system is integrated with the charging station in conjunction with the distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) and distributed generation (DG) to reduce the impact of the EVCS. This paper presents a fuzzy classified method for optimal sizings and placements of EVCSs, DGs, and DSTATCOMs for 69-bus radial distribution systems using the RAO-3 algorithm. The characteristic curves of Li-ion batteries were utilized for the load flow analysis to devel... [more]

Keywords: cross-flow wind turbines, guide vanes, power coefficient, vertical axis wind turbine
More than ever, the generation of energy from renewable sources has become one of the most critical and challenging areas of human activity. This is the result of a number of factors acting simultaneously, including the highly publicized greenhouse effect, the need to reduce CO2 emissions, the dwindling of natural resources and thus the need to protect them, including the preservation of wealth (among other natural resources) for future generations. This paper presents a numerical investigation of the operation of a vertical axis wind turbine with guide vanes. The work analyzes the obtained power on the turbine rotor for different numbers of rotor blades and different numbers of guide vanes, as well as for different proportions of the width of the rotor ring and the guide ring. The analyses carried out point to the potential feasibility of using this type of design in practice. The obtained power coefficient is higher than that of classical vertical axis wind turbines. The analyses als... [more]
Thermocouple Effective Length under Sinusoidal Gas Temperature Condition
Qinghuang Huang, Zhiwei Liu, Xingyou Li, Peiyong Wang
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: effective length, sinusoidal temperature profile, thermocouple
When a thermocouple is used to measure gas temperature, the measured temperature is the thermocouple bead temperature, which is not equal to the gas temperature. The bead temperature results from its energy balance. Through the wire convection and conduction, the temperature of the bead is related to the gas temperature within a certain geometric range around it, and this range is quantified by the effective length. Under the sinusoidal incoming gas temperature condition, the analytical expression for the effective length is deduced, and its accuracy is validated by the one-dimensional numerical solution. The differences between the analytical and numerical effective lengths are less than 10.5% for the test cases. Similar to that under the uniform incoming gas temperature condition, the effective length under the sinusoidal gas temperature condition increases with the thermal conductivity and the diameter of the wire and decreases with the heat transfer coefficient of the wire. The inf... [more]

Keywords: reservoir characteristics, resource potential, shale gas, South China
Many sets of Paleozoic marine organic-rich shale strata have developed in South China. However, the exploration and development results of these shale formations are quite different. Based on the data of core experiment analysis, drilling, fracturing test of typical wells, the reservoir differences and controlling factors of four sets of typical marine organic-rich shale in southern China are investigated. The four sets of shale have obvious differences in reservoir characteristics. Ordovician−Silurian shale mainly develops siliceous shale, mixed shale and argillaceous shale, with large pore diameter, high porosity, moderate thermal maturity, large pore volume and specific surface area. Cambrian shale mainly develops siliceous shale and mixed shale, with small pore diameter, low porosity, high thermal maturity and smaller pore volume and specific surface area than Ordovician−Silurian shale. Devonian−Carboniferous shale has similar mineral composition to Ordovician−Silurian shale, with... [more]

Keywords: driving cycles, exhaust emission, hybrid vehicles, real driving emissions
Hybrid vehicles account for the largest share of new motor vehicle sales in Europe. These are vehicles that are expected to bridge the technological gap between vehicles with internal combustion engines and electric vehicles. Such a solution also makes it possible to meet the limits of motor vehicle emissions, at a time when it is particularly important to test them under actual traffic conditions. This article analyzes the impact of the length of the test routes in relation to current, but also future regulations of approval standards. Three routes of post-phase composition (urban, rural, motorway) with lengths of about 30, 16 and 8 km were selected for the study. Measurements of the main emission components were made using portable emission measurement systems (PEMS), and exhaust emissions were determined using the moving average window (MAW) method. Analysis of the obtained results led to the conclusion that the current requirements for the RDE test (in particular, the duration of t... [more]

Keywords: agent-based model, energy consumption prediction, occupant–equipment interaction, office buildings, two-part model
Traditional building energy consumption prediction methods lack the description of occupant behaviors. The interactions between occupants and equipment have great influence on building energy consumption, which cause a large deviation between the predicted results and the actual situation. To address this problem, a two-part prediction model, consisting of a basic part related to the building area and a variable part related to stochastic occupant behaviors, is proposed in this study. The wavelet decomposition and reconstruction method is firstly used to split the energy consumption. A relationship between the low frequency energy consumption data and the building area is discovered, and an area-based index is used to fit the basic part of the prediction model. With a quantitative description of the occupant−equipment interaction by classifying the equipment into environmentally relevant and environmentally irrelevant equipment, an agent-based model is established in the variable part.... Keywords: damping, optimization strategy, PI, pitch-speed system, wind turbine
Given the difficulty of accurately setting multiple control parameters in wind turbines, a design method for a pitch controller considering tower load reduction is proposed, which enhances the control performance and reduces both the tower vibration and load. Firstly, the pitch-speed system and the tower fore-aft active damping control are built. In addition, the explicit equation of the tower fore-aft active damping gain is deduced to calculate its initial value. Secondly, the pitch-speed system is identified as an inertial time-delay system using the least squares method. Subsequently, the pitch PI control parameters are set using the Chien−Hrones−Reswick method. Thirdly, the pitch PI control parameters and the tower fore-aft active damping gains are optimized based on the kindred-protected genetic algorithm, which improves the accuracy of the control parameters. Meanwhile, the Pareto method is used to coordinate the control objectives by allocating the weight. Furthermore, the adapt... [more]

Keywords: energy demand forecast, Hydrogen, LNG regasification terminal, LOHC, Modelling, neural network
This publication explores how the existing synergies between conventional liquefied natural gas regasification and hydrogen hydrogenation and dehydrogenation processes can be exploited. Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier methodology has been analyzed for hydrogen processes from a thermodynamic point of view to propose an energy integration system to improve energy efficiency during hybridization periods. The proposed neural network can acceptably predict power demand using daily average temperature as a single predictor, with a mean relative error of 0.25%, while simulation results based on the estimated natural gas peak demand show that high-pressure compression is the most energy-demanding process in conventional liquefied natural gas regasification processes (with more than 98% of the total energy consumption). In such a scenario, exceeding energy from liquid organic hydrogen carrier processes have been used as a Rankine’s cycle input to produce both power for the high-pressure compres... [more]

Keywords: battery energy storage system (BESS), battery lifespan, EDLC, hybrid energy storage system (HESS), Python/MATLAB/Simulink (PMS)-hybrid model, supercapacitor
This paper investigates the effect of the electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) in reducing stress and prolonging the battery lifespan in a hybrid energy storage system (HESS). A 65 F, 16.2 V EDLC supercapacitor was connected in a laboratory experiment to produce its charge/discharge profile at a constant current of 5 and 10 A. The EDLC’s Faranda or “two branch model” mathematical parameters were extracted from the experimental charge/discharge profile. The extracted parameters were used as inputs to design the Python/MATLAB/Simulink (PMS)-hybrid model of the EDLC. The charge/discharge profiles of the simulated PMS model of the EDLC were then compared to the charge/discharge profiles derived from the experimental setup of the EDLC and were found to match. The PMS model of the EDLC was then used as a subcomponent in an HESS system modelled in MATLAB/Simulink. Using constant load conditions, the battery’s voltage, current, power and state of charge (SOC) were analyzed for a battery ener... [more]

Keywords: air heat pump, Carnot battery system, cost flow rate of electricity, energy density, roundtrip efficiency, steam turbine
In this study, exergy and thermoeconomic analyses were performed on a Carnot battery system (CBS) comprising an air heat pump and steam turbine. The Carnot battery technology employed in this study stored electricity as heat for 10 h during night-time, when electricity prices were low, and generated electricity for 10 h with power output of 500 MW during the day, when electricity prices were relatively high. The roundtrip efficiency and the energy density of the CBS were approximately 0.37, and 150.0 MJ/m3, respectively. When the unit cost of electricity supplied to the heat pump system was approximately 23.0 USD/GJ, that of electricity produced by the steam turbine was approximately 70.8 USD/GJ. The thermoeconomic results indicate that the changes in electricity cost flow rate relative to the reference value can be used as an indicator to make purchasing, replacement, and research and development decisions for specific components of the CBS.

Keywords: boost converter, MPPT fuzzy, output PV power estimation, PV system, solar forecasting, STVAR model, tropical insular region
Photovoltaic (PV) energy source generation is becoming more and more common with a higher penetration level in the smart grid because of PV energy’s falling production costs. PV energy is intermittent and uncertain due to its dependence on irradiance. To overcome these drawbacks, and to guarantee better smart grid energy management, we need to deal with PV power prediction. The work presented in this paper concerns the study of the performance of the fuzzy MPPT approach to extract a maximum of power from solar panels, associated with PV power estimation based on short time scale irradiance forecasting. It is particularly applied to a case study of a tropical insular region, considering extreme climatic variability. To validate our study with real solar data, measured and predicted irradiance profiles are used to feed the PV system, based on solar forecasting in a tropical insular context. For that, a spatio-temporal autoregressive model (STVAR) is applied. The measurements are collecte... [more]

The transition towards net-zero emissions is inevitable for humanity’s future. Of all the sectors, electrical energy systems emit the most emissions. This urgently requires the witnessed accelerating technological landscape to transition towards an emission-free smart grid. It involves massive integration of intermittent wind and solar-powered resources into future power grids. Additionally, new paradigms such as large-scale integration of distributed resources into the grid, proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, and electrification of different sectors are envisioned as essential enablers for a net-zero future. However, these changes will lead to unprecedented size, complexity and data of the planning and operation problems of future grids. It is thus important to discuss and consider High Performance Computing (HPC), parallel computing, and cloud computing prospects in any future electrical energy studies. February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: defect detection, micro-cracks, photovoltaics, quality inspection, smart manufacturing
Photovoltaic cell manufacturing is a rigorous process involving many stages where the cell surface is exposed to external pressure and temperature differentials. This provides fertile ground for micro-cracks to develop on the cell surface. At present, domain experts carry out a manual inspection of the cell surface to judge if any micro-cracks are present. This research looks to overcome the issue of cell data scarcity through the proposed filter-induced augmentations, thus providing developers with an effective, cost-free mechanism for generating representative data samples. Due to the abstract nature of the cell surfaces, the proposed augmentation strategy is effective in generating representative samples for better generalization. Furthermore, a custom architecture is developed that is computationally lightweight compared to state-of-the-art architectures, containing only 7.01 million learnable parameters while achieving an F1-score of 97%.

Keywords: BEM, pitch imbalance, wind turbine aerodynamics
An experimental and numerical investigation about the pitch imbalance effect on a wind turbine model is performed. The characterization of the power losses and loads generated on a small-scale model and the validation of an analytical framework for the performance of unbalanced rotors are proposed. Starting from the optimal collective pitch assessment (performed to identify the condition with the maximum power coefficient), the pitch of just one blade was systematically changed: it is seen that the presence of a pitch misalignment is associated with a degradation of the turbine performance, visible both from experiments and from Blade Element Momentum (BEM) calculations (modified to account for the load asymmetry). Up to 30% power losses and a 15% thrust increase are achievable when an imbalanced rotor operates at tip speed ratios around five, clearly highlighting the importance of avoiding this phenomenon when dealing with industrial applications. The numerical model predicts this res... [more]

Keywords: heat transfer coefficient, heat transfer enhancement, Laguerre–Voronoi tessellation, open-cell foams, porous media, pulsating flow
Open-cell foams are attractive for heat transfer enhancement in many engineering applications. Forced pulsations can lead to additional heat transfer enhancement in porous media. Studies of heat transfer in open-cell foams under forced pulsation conditions are limited. Therefore, in this work, the possibility of heat transfer enhancement in porous media with flow pulsations is studied by a numerical simulation. To generate the 3D open-cell foams, the Laguerre−Voronoi tessellation method was used. The foam porosity was 0.743, 0.864, and 0.954. The Reynolds numbers ranged from 10 to 55, and the products of the relative amplitude and the Strouhal numbers ranged from 0.114 to 0.344. Heat transfer was studied under the conditions of symmetric and asymmetric pulsations. The results of numerical simulation showed that an increase in the amplitude of pulsations led to an augmentation of heat transfer for all studied porosities. The maximum intensification of heat transfer was 43%. Symmetric pu... [more]

Battery electric tractors (BETs) demonstrate considerable advantages over diesel-fueled tractors, including higher conversion efficiency, higher torque, less maintenance, and no tailpipe emissions. Converting to BETs also requires tradeoffs in the form of the batteries’ high cost, increased weight, limited energy capacity, finite charging cycles, and lengthy charging time. The extent to which small-scale organic vegetable, fruit and cut-flower growers are aware of these tradeoffs is unknown. Little research exists examining these growers’ perceptions, concerns, and willingness to pay for or adopt BETs. Here, we address that gap by conducting qualitative semi-structured interviews with 14 organic growers in the US Midwest, most operating in Michigan. We focus our questions on growers’ motivations, existing tractor-use patterns, and the evaluation of different configurations of a belly-mount open-station cultivating BET. Our results suggest interest in and potential for growers to transi... [more]
