Efficiency and Slippage in Draw Gears with Flat Belts
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: belt slippage, composite belts, energy consumption of transmissions, transmission efficiency
This paper presents the measured energy losses in a draw gear with NE22, XH500, LL2, and CFG flat belts. The ranges of torque capacity, slippage occurrence, and transmission efficiency of selected drive belts are also presented. Knowing the exact values of these parameters allows the selection of the most suitable belts for different applications. In addition, belt manufacturers do not provide these data accurately, leading to machine failures and downtime. The paper describes the dependence of belt efficiency and belt slippage as a function of transmission load. Running transmissions with high slippage values are associated with a significant loss of energy and efficiency, rapid wear of the belt and pulleys, and increased operating temperature. In addition, when flat belts are under excessive load, it is common for the belt to quickly fall off the pulleys, interrupting the operation of machinery and equipment. Experiments on a test bench can accurately determine the energy loss caused... [more]

Shale Formation Damage during Fracturing Fluid Imbibition and Flowback Process Considering Adsorbed Methane
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flowback, formation damage, fracturing fluids, imbibition, pore structure, shale gas
Hydraulic fracturing of shale gas reservoirs is characterized by large fracturing fluid consumption, long working cycle and low flowback efficiency. Huge amounts of fracturing fluid retained in shale reservoirs for a long time would definitely cause formation damage and reduce the gas production efficiency. In this work, a pressure decay method was conducted in order to measure the amount of fracturing fluid imbibition and sample permeability under the conditions of formation temperature, pressure and adsorbed methane in real time. Experimental results show that (1) the mass of imbibed fracturing fluid per unit mass of shale sample is 0.00021−0.00439 g/g considering the in-situ pressure, temperature and adsorbed methane. (2) The imbibition and flowback behavior of fracturing fluid are affected by the imbibition or flowback pressure difference, pore structure, pore surface properties, mechanical properties of shale and mineral contents. A Review on Power Electronic Topologies and Control for Wave Energy Converters
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: marine energy systems, power electronic converters, renewable energy systems (RESs), wave energy converter (WEC)
Ocean energy systems (OESs) convert the kinetic, potential, and thermal energy from oceans and seas to electricity. These systems are broadly classified into tidal, wave, thermal, and current marine systems. If fully utilized, the OESs can supply the planet with the required electricity demand as they are capable of generating approximately 2 TW of energy. The wave energy converter (WEC) systems capture the kinetic and potential energy in the waves using suitable mechanical energy capturers such as turbines and paddles. The energy density in the ocean waves is in the range of tens of kilowatts per square meter, which makes them a very attractive energy source due to the high predictability and low variability when compared with other renewable sources. Because the final objective of any renewable energy source (RES), including the WECs, is to produce electricity, the energy capturer of the WEC systems is coupled with an electrical generator, which is controlled then by power electronic... Ammonia Removal by Simultaneous Nitrification and Denitrification in a Single Dual-Chamber Microbial Electrolysis Cell
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bioelectrochemical system, denitrification, microbial electrolysis, nitrification, wastewater treatment
Ammonia removal from wastewater was successfully achieved by simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) in a double-chamber microbial electrolysis cell (MEC). The MEC operations at different applied voltages (0.7 to 1.5 V) and initial ammonia concentrations (30 to 150 mg/L) were conducted in order to evaluate their effects on MEC performance in batch mode. The maximum nitrification efficiency of 96.8% was obtained in the anode at 1.5 V, followed by 94.11% at 1.0 V and 87.05% at 0.7. At 1.5 V, the initial ammonia concentration considerably affected the nitrification rate, and the highest nitrification rate constant of 0.1601/h was determined from a first-order linear regression at 30 mg/L ammonium nitrogen. The overall total nitrogen removal efficiency was noted to be 85% via the SND in the MEC operated at an initial ammonium concentration of 50 mg/L and an applied cell voltage of 1.5 V. The MEC operation in continuous mode could remove ammonia (50 mg/L) in a series of anode a... [more]

A Generalized Switched-Capacitor Multilevel Inverter Topology with Voltage Boosting Ability and Reduced Inrush Current
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: boost inverter, harmonics, multilevel inverter, power loss, switched-capacitor cell
This article presents a novel quadruple boost inverter (QBI) with an integrated boost stage that comprises an inductor, a capacitor, a switch, and an input source. The inductor on the input side limits the inrush current and also the capacitor charging current ripples. The QBI topology comprises a dc source, an input inductor, nine switches, three diodes, and capacitors. This produces a nine-level waveform, which reduces the need for additional filters such as inductors and capacitors. The proposed QBI is elementary, compact, and needs fewer components than existing nine levels inverter. Compared to the typical triangular carrier-based sinusoidal pulse width modulation, the newly developed parabolic level-shifted carrier has a much greater RMS value. Another advantage of the proposed topology is extension for generating higher voltage levels without increment in the blocking voltage across the switches. This makes the topology ideal for medium voltage high power applications. The outpu... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: KS-test, multi-parameter, Ni-MH batteries, Pearson correlation coefficient, SVR
In order to solve the problems of long-time consumption and high energy consumption in existing capacity detection methods of retired Ni-MH batteries, a fast and reliable capacity prediction method for retired Ni-MH batteries by multi-parameter driven analysis was proposed in this paper. This method mainly obtains several parameters through short-time measurement and pulse rapid nondestructive testing. Then, Pearson correlation coefficient and KS-test were used to analyze the correlation between the two parameters and verify the same distribution. Finally, SVR was used to predict the battery discharge capacity. The results show that the volume expansion thickness difference Δd, AC internal resistance R, terminal voltage U of the battery, charge and discharge polarization internal resistance Rf1 and R and pulse charging power P2 of the battery are strongly negatively correlated with the discharge capacity, and these characteristic parameters can effectively and reliably reflect the inte... Safety Characteristics of Lithium-Ion Batteries under Dynamic Impact Conditions
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dynamic impact, failure boundary, lithium-ion battery, safety characteristics
With the rapid development of electric vehicles, the safety accidents caused by the damage and failure of lithium-ion batteries under mechanical load are increasing gradually, which increases the significance of collision safety in lithium-ion batteries. The failure threshold of the cell in a free state is different from that of the cells in the module. Therefore, the safety characteristics of cells and modules under vertical dynamic impact conditions were studied in this paper. Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries and assembled 2-in-10 series modules with a 100% state of charge (SOC) were tested. Analyses included the voltage, temperature, and mechanical behavior of test samples under different impact loads, extrusion positions, and indenter shapes. The results showed that the damage behavior of a battery was closely related to the contact shape, contact area, and contact position. A smaller contact area led to greater deformation; moreover, the contact area being closer to the... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biomass, Energy Storage, energy system, hybrid, Polygeneration, renewables, solar, systems analysis, Wind
The energy sector is nowadays facing new challenges, mainly in the form of a massive shifting towards renewable energy sources as an alternative to fossil fuels and a diffusion of the distributed generation paradigm, which involves the application of small-scale energy generation systems. In this scenario, systems adopting one or more renewable energy sources and capable of producing several forms of energy along with some useful substances, such as fresh water and hydrogen, are a particularly interesting solution. A hybrid polygeneration system based on renewable energy sources can overcome operation problems regarding energy systems where only one energy source is used (solar, wind, biomass) and allows one to use an all-in-one integrated systems in order to match the different loads of a utility. From the point of view of scientific literature, medium- and large-scale systems are the most investigated; nevertheless, more and more attention has also started to be given to small-scale... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: direct absorption, nanofluids, PHP, solar energy
Developing renewable energy technologies, especially solar technology, is of vital importance to cope with increasing energy consumption. The existing solar thermal systems have the disadvantages of capturing solar energy inefficiently and needing additional pumping power to circulate the working fluid. A concept of a direct absorption pump-free solar thermal system that combines the advantages of nanoparticles and pulsating heat pipes (PHP) is proposed in this work. The effects of a variety of parameters including nanoparticle types, nanoparticle concentration, and nanofluid filling rate on the performance of PHP were studied. It was found that PHP has the best filling rate (80−90%) making the best heat transfer performance and minimizing the thermal resistance. The concentration of nanoparticles affects the input power of the pulsating heat pipe and thus the operation of the PHP. The nanofluid with relatively low concentration cannot absorb enough solar energy to drive the PHP to ope... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: distributed energy systems, flexibility, Hydrogen, power-to-gas, sector coupling, smart energy systems, substitute natural gas
The deployment of distributed energy systems must take place paying attention to the self-consumption of renewable generation. Innovative sector coupling strategies can play that role linking local electricity and gas grids. The present work aims to evaluate the energy and economic feasibility of the Power-to-Methane strategy application in urban energy districts. A residential cluster was considered as a case study. Two PV configurations have been applied to evaluate the Substitute Natural Gas (SNG) production under different renewable excess conditions. Thereafter, the Power-to-Methane strategy was implemented by varying the system’s size. Some significant configurations have been compared to each other in terms of energy and economics. Beyond a certain threshold limit, an increase in the photovoltaic size slightly enhances the effectively self-consumed energy. The Power-to-Methane strategy can exploit all the renewable excess once the system is properly sized, almost doubling the po... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: AHP, electric vehicles, fuel cell, internal combustion engine vehicles, mobility alternatives, pairwise comparison, plug-in hybrid
It is, undoubtedly, a widespread belief that the electric vehicle (EV) is considered sustainable. However, in the manufacturing and retirement phases, EVs do not appear to be as sustainable as internal combustion vehicles (ICVs) and during the use phase, the pollution produced by EVs depends on the source of electricity generation to recharge the batteries. From an economic point of view, EVs do not appear to be competitive compared to ICVs either. However, current market trends push hard on battery EVs (BEV) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV). This study aims to analyze which of the possible mobility alternatives has more sense to be considered as the option with higher penetration in the future. To this end, four known mobility technologies (ICVs, PHEVs, BEVs, and hydrogen fuel cell EVs or FCEVs) are compared for a mid-size car using published data, through environmental and techno-economic criteria, by applying the analytic hierarchy process method in an objective manner on multiple... February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: corner radius ratio, FIV, flow structure, heat transfer, oscillating heated cylinder, vortex shedding
This numerical study investigated the flow-induced vibration (FIV) on non-heated and heated cylinders with different normalized corner radii (r*) at different Reynolds numbers (Re). Four different values of r* were considered (i.e., 0 (square cylinder), 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 (circular cylinder)) at three different Re: 100, 150, and 200 within the laminar regime. The cylinder constrained in the axial direction and oscillated transversally was considered for a fixed nondimensional cylinder mass (m*) of 10 and a reduced velocity (Ur) of 4.92. The effect of r* and Re could be seen in the vibration modes of cylinders. The two-dimensional incompressible Navier−Stokes and energy equations were solved together with Newton’s Second Law governing the motion of the cylinder with the help of a computational solver. Four different modes were observed in this study: Mode-I characterized by exceptionally low amplitude; Mode-II characterized by fluctuating amplitude known as hysteresis (beating); M... [more]

Tabular Open Circuit Voltage Modelling of Li-Ion Batteries for Robust SOC Estimation
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery management system, hardware implementation of algorithms, memory constraints, OCV-SOC characterization, polynomial fitting, sampling of functions, state of charge estimation
Battery management systems depend on open circuit voltage (OCV) characterization for state of charge (SOC) estimation in real time. The traditional approach to OCV-SOC characterization involves collecting OCV-SOC data from sample battery cells and then fitting a polynomial model to this data. The parameters of these polynomial models are known as the OCV-parameters, or OCV-SOC parameters, in battery management systems and are used for real-time SOC estimation. Even though traditional OCV-SOC characterization approaches are able to abstract the OCV-SOC behavior of a battery in a few parameters, these parameters are only applicable in high precision computing systems. However, many practical battery applications do not have access to high-precision computing resources. The typical approach in a low-precision system is to round the OCV-parameters. This paper highlights the perils of rounding the OCV parameters and proposes an alternative OCV-SOC table. First, several existing OCV-SOC para... [more]

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of the Effect of Blades Number on the Dynamic Response of a Small Horizontal-Axis Wind Turbine
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dynamic response, number of blades, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, small wind turbine, solidity, vibrations, wind tunnel test
The new energy scenario is rising a strong interest towards the distributed production from renewable sources; among them, wind seems to be one of the most interesting and at the same time critical due to the challenges of the conversion technology. Operation of small wind energy conversion systems is generally very complex due the extremely variable regime of operation and the high turbulent wind, so that a deep knowledge of the dynamic response of such devices is crucial not only for optimising their performances but also to make them comfortable to be used in residential areas. For these reasons, the present work is focused on analysing the effect in changing the number of blades on a small horizontal axis wind turbine through an experimental campaign in the wind tunnel. The turbine dynamics has been characterised running some “wind ramp” tests and analysing the rotor capability in following the wind as well the vibrations transmitted by the turbine during the operation. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biomass, electronic wastes, gasification, rare earth metals (REMs), rare earth metals (REMs) recycling
This manuscript investigates an improvised gasification process for capturing and recycling rare earth metals (REMs) from consumer and industrial electronic wastes, often termed “e-waste”. The proposed procedure is based on the formation of coalesced and aggregated metal nodules on biochar surfaces through the gasification of e-waste mixed with gasifier feedstocks. A preliminary understanding of metal nodule formation based on different atmospheric conditions (inert, oxidizing, and oxidizing followed by reducing atmospheres) was examined in both pilot-scale gasifier and tube furnace experiments using iron powder mixed with corn. Iron powder is representative of the REM in the e-waste. Metal nodule sizes, morphology, and composition are analyzed and compared via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) techniques. We conclude that sintering is the key mechanism responsible for metal nodule growth through me... [more]

Curled-Skewed Wakes behind Yawed Wind Turbines Subject to Veered Inflow
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: analytical wake model, Coriolis force, wake steering, wind turbine, wind veer, yaw angle
This work presents a new engineering analytical model that predicts the effect of both the turbine yaw misalignment and the inflow wind veer on the wake flow distribution downwind of a wind turbine. To consider the veered inflow, two methods were examined. In the first method, the curled shape of the wake due to the yaw offset is initially modelled. The wake shape is then laterally skewed at each height due to the wind veer based on the assumption that the turbine wake is transported downstream by the incoming flow. The second method is a more realistic approach that accounts for the effect of wind veer on the wind velocity direction and the yaw angle seen by the wind turbine. This models the wake region in a local coordinate system defined based on the wind direction at each height. A coordinate transformation is then performed to represent the wake flow distribution in the global coordinate system attached to the ground. The results show that while the two methods provide similar out... [more]
