Equivalent Inertia Estimation of Asynchronous Motor and Its Effect on Power System Frequency Response
Xingyong Zhao, Penghui Qin, Zhen Tang
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: asynchronous motor, electromechanical time scale, equivalent inertia, potential after transient reactance
With the increase in renewable energy penetration, the traditional synchronous generator is gradually replaced, resulting in the decrease in system inertia level and the weakening of frequency modulation capability. In addition to synchronous inertia, load inertia of asynchronous motors also widely exists in power systems, but its effect on system frequency stability has not been fully studied. To this end, based on the detailed model of asynchronous motor, the amplitude−phase motion equation based on potential after transient reactance is proposed, and then the phase motion equation of potential after transient reactance is derived to evaluate the equivalent inertia of asynchronous motor under electromechanical time scale. The equivalent inertia of asynchronous motor is studied theoretically by building the system frequency response model. The results show that the equivalent inertia of asynchronous motor can essentially improve the system frequency stability, while showing time-varyi... [more]

Keywords: data-driven, gas turbine, lean blowout, lean premixed combustor, prediction technique
The lean blowout is the most critical issue in lean premixed gas turbine combustion. Decades of research into LBO prediction methods have yielded promising results. Predictions can be classified into five categories based on methodology: semi-empirical model, numerical simulation, hybrid, experimental, and data-driven model. First is the semi-empirical model, which is the initial model used for LBO limit prediction at the design stages. An example is Lefebvre’s LBO model that could estimate the LBO limit for eight different gas turbine combustors with a ±30% uncertainty. To further develop the prediction of the LBO limit, a second method based on numerical simulation was proposed, which provided deeper information and improved the accuracy of the LBO limit. The numerical prediction method outperformed the semi-empirical model on a specific gas turbine with ±15% uncertainty, but more testing is required on other combustors. Then, scientists proposed a hybrid method to obtain the best ou... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Caribbean, photovoltaics, prefeasibility, PV, small island developing states, solar resource, Trinidad and Tobago
Small island developing states (SIDS) are the lowest emitters of greenhouse gases yet are the most vulnerable to the impacts of global climate warming. Many islands, such as the Caribbean islands, identified solar photovoltaics as a technology for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from their electricity sector. However, prefeasibility economic studies for photovoltaics are challenging as operational photovoltaic system data are nonexistent, and the measured solar radiation datasets are limited. Thus, a prefeasibility PV tool that uses ground-measured global horizontal irradiation and a supplementary photovoltaic derating factor model is proposed for use in tropical SIDS. In addition, the bias of a modelled irradiation dataset was quantified with limited solar radiation data for a tropical Caribbean SIDS, Trinidad and Tobago. For this SIDS, the tool estimates the annual energy output of a 50 MW photovoltaic system to be 57,890 MWh and the levelized cost of electricity to be USD 0.12/kWh... [more]

Keywords: Sindh case, wind energy, wind energy integration, wind mapping, wind turbine generators
The environment and the economy are negatively impacted by conventional energy sources, such as coal, gasoline, and other fossil fuels. Pakistan’s reliance on these resources has resulted in a catastrophic energy crisis. This has driven the government to make critical decisions such as early retail closures, power outages for the industrial sector, and an increase to two days a week vacations. Wind energy, accessible and affordable, will become a viable option for meeting Pakistan’s present and future energy demands. Approximately 3% of Pakistan’s land can produce nearly 132 GW of power with an installed capacity of 5 MW per km2. In this study, four zones (Karachi, Thatta, Badin, and Jamshoro) in Sindh province are assessed for the feasibility of wind energy generation. The installed capacity, generator types, and detailed specifications are provided for each zone. Moreover, the wind mapping of Pakistan is presented considering the four potential zones. The zones are analyzed using ann... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combined, energy and exergy analysis, solar cooker, thermal energy storage
Most solar cookers usually perform a single task of solely cooking food during sunshine hours. Solar cookers coupled with thermal energy storage (TES) material for off-sunshine cooking are usually expensive and require complex engineering designs, and cannot be used for dual purposes, for example, solar water heating and cooking. In this paper, a solar cooker that can perform dual tasks of cooking as well as storing thermal energy to be used during off-sunshine periods is presented. The experimental setup is composed of a parabolic dish, a solar receiver coupled with a flat plate and an oil-circulating copper coil for charging and discharging a storage tank. The objective of the experiment is to evaluate the energy and exergy thermal performance parameters of the dual-purpose system during charging and discharging cycles. The effect of the flow rate and the mass of the load are investigated while using sunflower oil as both the heat transfer fluid and the storage material. Charging and... [more]

Keywords: cell stack, computed tomography, crush test, cylindrical impactor, hemispherical impactor, prismatic cell
Recently, the use of prismatic cells in electric vehicles has increased significantly. Unlike the cylindrical or pouch format, the prismatic cell format has not been sufficiently investigated. In this study, quasi-static mechanical tests are performed on prismatic cells. The tests include a cylindrical and a hemispherical impactor that mechanically load the cells in all three spatial directions. In both in-plane directions, a cell stack consisting of three cells is tested to capture the influence and loading of the outer cells of a cell stack. It is found out that, in the in-plane tests, short-circuiting occurs first in the outer cells and subsequently in the middle cell, which is targeted by the impactor. This result can also be supported by computed tomography scans. The results illustrate that, when evaluating the crash safety of battery cells, several cells should always be tested in order to capture the different loading of the cells.

Keywords: coal gasification wastewater, Genetic Algorithm, Heat Exchanger Network, heat integration
A heat integration optimization method that considers the changes in process parameters is proposed to find the global optimal process scheme for a coal chemical company’s phenols and ammonia recovery process. The phenols and ammonia recovery process is simulated by Aspen Plus, and a programming method for heat exchanger networks synthesis that can simultaneously optimize process parameters and heat integration is constructed by Matlab. Taking the total annual cost as the objective function, the following process parameters are optimized: the hot feed temperature and cold/hot feed ratio of sour water stripper, the temperature of three-step partial condensation system, the feed temperature and column pressure of both solvent distillation column and solvent stripper. The result shows that, compared with the heat integration process under original process parameters, the new heat integration process saves 14.3% energy consumption and reduces the total annual cost by about 15.1%. The new h... [more]

Keywords: fixed-wing UAV, hybrid propulsion, hysteresis, Li-Po battery, Modelling, Simulation, testing
Lithium batteries employed in lightweight fixed-wing UAVs are required to operate with large temperature variations and, especially for the emerging applications in hybrid propulsion systems, with relevant transient loads. The detailed dynamic modelling of battery packs is thus of paramount importance to verify the feasibility of innovative hybrid systems, as well as to support the design of battery management systems for safety/reliability enhancement. This paper deals with the development of a generalised approach for the dynamic modelling of battery packs via Thevenin circuits with modular hysteretic elements (open circuit voltage, internal resistance, RC grids). The model takes into account the parameters’ dependency on the state of charge, temperature, and both the amplitude and sign of the current load. As a relevant case study, the modelling approach is here applied to the Li-Po battery pack (1850 mAh, 6 cells, 22.2 V) employed in the lightweight fixed-wing UAV Rapier X-25 devel... [more]

Keywords: artificial hummingbird algorithm, Artificial Intelligence, on-load tap-changing transformer, optimal power flow, optimal reactive power dispatch
This paper proposes a new artificial hummingbird algorithm (AHA)-based framework to investigate the optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problem which is a critical problem in the capacity of power systems. This paper aims to improve the performance of power systems by minimizing two distinct objective functions namely active power loss in the transmission network and total voltage deviation at the load buses subjected to various constraints within multiobjective framework. The proposed AHA-based framework maps the inherent flight and foraging capabilities exhibited by hummingbirds in nature to determine the best settings for the control variables (i.e., voltages at generation buses, the tap positions of on-load tap-changing transformers (OLTCs) and the size of switchable shunt VAR compensators) to minimize the overall objective functions. A multiobjective optimal reactive power dispatch framework (MO-ORPD) considering renewable energy sources (RES) and load uncertainties is also pro... [more]

Keywords: battery management system, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), equivalent circuit model, impedance, least squares estimation, Li-ion batteries
Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is a well-established method of battery analysis, where the response of a battery to either a voltage or current excitation signal spanning a wide frequency spectrum is measured and analyzed. State-of-the-art EIS analysis is limited to high-precision measurement systems within laboratory environments. In order to be relevant in practical applications, EIS analysis needs to be carried out with low-cost sensors, which suffer from high levels of measurement noise. This article presents an approach to estimate the equivalent circuit model (ECM) parameters of a Li-Ion battery pack based on EIS measurements in the presence of high levels of noise. The proposed algorithm consists of a fast Fourier transform, feature extraction, curve fitting, and least-squares estimation. The results of the proposed parameter-estimation algorithm are compared to that of recent work for objective performance comparison. The error analysis of the proposed approach, i... [more]

Keywords: cavity growth, field test, laboratory experiment, numerical simulation, underground coal gasification
Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) is a leading-edge technology for clean and effective utilization of coal resources, especially for deep coal seams with a depth of more than 1000 m. Since the core operation place of UCG is the cavity, mastering the cavity growth pattern is a prerequisite to ensure the efficient and economic development of UCG. At present, scholars have conducted numerous research works on cavity growth, but the simulation conditions limit the research results. Hence, it is necessary to summarize and sort out the research results of cavity growth patterns, which contribute to deepening the understanding of UCG and pointing out the direction for subsequent research. First of all, this paper summarizes the development history of UCG technology and describes the cavity growth mechanism from chemical reactions and thermo-mechanical failure. Then, the research methods of cavity growth are summarized from three aspects: a field test, laboratory experiment, and numerical si... [more]

The natural potential of Chile—solar energy and 8 km of coastline—make the implementation of small-scale reverse osmosis desalination plants (RODPs) in coastal areas energetically supported with photovoltaic systems (PVs) feasible. This work considers a survey of the plants in Chile. As a demonstration of a RODP, a technical/economic evaluation is carried out, analyzing four possible cases in which different energy configurations are proposed: electric grid, diesel generator, and photovoltaic systems, without or with batteries. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of these plants are presented. The results obtained indicate that there are 39 plants in operation, which produce an average permeate water flow of Qp 1715 m3d−1. Solar Explorer, and Homer Pro software are used for a plant that generates 8 m3day−1 of permeate water, resulting in the conclusion that Case 3 is the most economically viable, as it has a useful life of 20 years and will have an annual solar contribution of mo... Keywords: battery energy storage system, frequency regulation, power smoothing, ramp rate control, renewable energy grid, renewable energy sources
This paper presents a hybrid model constituting dynamic smoothing technique and particle swarm optimization techniques to optimally size and control battery energy storage systems for wind energy ramp rate control and power system frequency performance enhancement. In today’s modern power system, a high-proportion renewable energy grid is inevitable. This high-proportion renewable energy grid is a power system with abundant integration of renewable energy resources under the presence of energy storage tools. Energy storage tools are integrated into such power systems to balance the fluctuation and intermittence of renewable energy sources. One of the requirements in a high-proportion renewable energy grid is the fractional power balance between generation and load. One of the requirements set by power system regulators is the generation variation between two time points. A power producer is mandated to satisfy the ramp rate requirement set by the grid owner. This paper proposes dynamic... [more]

Keywords: enhanced heat transfer, liquid/solid circulating fluidized bed, non-spherical particle, porosity, sphericity, surface cleaning
Industrial liquid/solid fluidized bed heat exchangers are commonly used with particle recycling systems to allow an increased superficial velocity and higher heat transfer rates. Here, experimental results are reported on a novel helical flow channel geometry for liquid/solid fluidized beds which allow higher heat transfer rates and reduced complexity by operating below the particle transport fluid velocity. This eliminates the complexity of particle recycle systems whilst still delivering a compact heat exchanger. The qualitative character of the fluidization was studied for a range of particle types and sizes under several inclinations of the helices and various hydraulic diameters. The best fluidization combinations were further studied to obtain heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops. Improvements over the heat exchange from a plain concentric tube in an annulus were obtained to the following degree: vertical fluidized bed, 27%; helical baffles, 34 to 54%; and fluidized bed... Improved Operation and Stability of a Wind-Hydro Microgrid by Means of a Li-Ion Battery Energy Storage
Rafael Sebastián
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery energy storage, hydro power, isolated microgrid, Li-ion battery, PID control, power systems modeling, power systems stability, power systems transients, wind power
This article presents an isolated microgrid which combines two renewable power generators: a Hydraulic-Turbine-Generator (HTG) and a Wind-Turbine-Generator (WTG) with a Li-ion battery-energy-storage (BES). Depending on the generator(s) which supply active power, the microgrid can operate in three modes: Hydro-Only (HO), Wind-Hydro (WH) and Wind-Only (WO). In WH mode, the HTG supplies the difference between the power demanded by the consumers and the power supplied by the WTG. This net demanded power can be negative when the WTG power is greater than the load and this situation can lead to a microgrid collapse. This article shows by means of simulations how the BES is controlled to consume the WTG power excess guaranteeing the microgrid stability. Additionally, when the negative net demanded load is persistent the microgrid must transition from WH mode to WO mode, where only the WTG supplies active power, and this WH-WO transition is also simulated. In the simulations in WO mode, the BE... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DFIG, PMSG, strong grids, weak grids, wind energy
The recently stipulated grid codes require wind generators to re-initiate normal power production after grid voltage sag. This paper presents a comparative performance of two commonly employed variable speed wind turbines in today’s electricity market, the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) and the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) wind turbines. The evaluation of both wind turbines was performed for weak, normal and strong grids, considering the same machine ratings of the wind turbines. Because of the critical situations of the wind turbines during faulty conditions in the weak grids, an analysis was done considering the use of effective series dynamic braking resistor (SDBR) for both wind turbines. The grid voltage variable was employed as the signal for switching the SDBR in both wind turbines during transient state. Additionally, an overvoltage protection system was considered for both wind turbines using the DC chopper in the DC-link excitation circuitry of both wi... [more]

Keywords: Cu slag, gasification, Ni slag, sewage sludge, waste heat recovery
Waste heat recovery is a key problem to be solved for metallurgical slag. Furthermore, the heat source is a current bottleneck for sewage sludge gasification technology. At present, there is no complete process system for the thermochemical conversion of sludge driven by metallurgical slag waste heat. To recover the waste heat of slag, a granulation and waste heat recovery system using the sewage sludge gasification reaction is proposed in this paper. The sludge gasification kinetics were analyzed using thermogravimetry (TG). The active catalytic components in both Cu and Ni slag were determined using X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results show that the metallurgical slag could improve the decomposition rate of the sludge gasification reaction. The main catalytic components were Fe3O4 and CaO for Cu slag and Ni slag, respectively. The conversion ratio was increased by 7.8% and 11.8%, while the activation energy decreased from 21.09 kJ/mol to... [more]

Keywords: carbon-neutral economy, diversification of energy supply, economic crisis, electrification, energy transition, flexibility of energy systems, renewable energy sources, systems approach
The article seeks to describe a more realistic approach to the transition to a carbon-neutral energy model in the current period of economic and geopolitical turbulence, with the high volatility of energy prices, and the disruption of geopolitical and logistic ties, and puts forward a set of fundamental principles for the energy transition. The hypothesis tested is that the development of low-carbon energy is based on the structural-technological diversification of production methods and rationalization of energy consumption through expanded electrification and application of energy demand-side management programs. The analysis of the main approaches to the energy transition across the world shows that many countries now prioritize renewable energy sources, even though, despite their obvious environmental benefits, they are less reliable due to their intermittent nature. The proposed principles of the energy transition draw from a more flexible, compromise approach that implies an opti... [more]

Keywords: biomarker, carbon isotope, geochemical characteristics, source rock, Soxhlet extraction
The choice of the solvent to use in the Soxhlet extraction process dramatically affects the extraction yield. In this work, ten hydrocarbon source rocks were extracted using different solvents, and the chemical compositions of their products were analyzed to assess the extraction efficiency and the differences between fractions. The results indicated that using a mixed dichloromethane (DCM) and methanol (MeOH) reagent instead of the traditional chloroform (TCM) reagent can improve extraction efficiency for all rock types except for coal. The improvement in extraction efficiency was attributed to the contributions of non-hydrocarbon compounds (NOSs). A comparative study of the biomarkers of the fractions extracted using different reagents showed no significant differences in geochemical parameters, such as ∑C22−/∑C23+, Pr/Ph, Pr/nC17, Ph/nC18, OEP1, OEP2, CPI, and hopane distribution. Additionally, the carbon isotopic compositions of the fractions varied by less than 1‱, indicating that... [more]

Keywords: bald eagle search technique, global maximum power point tracking, maximum power point tracking, PV systems
Maximum power point tracker (MPPT) methods work to maximize the output power of a PV system under changes in meteorological conditions. The performance of these methods depends on the complexity of the algorithm and the number of used variable inputs for obtaining the MPP value. Moreover, they oscillate around the MPP in steady-state operations, causing a waste of power and power loss. Moreover, they do not work perfectly for a PV system running under partial shading conditions. Therefore, this paper proposes modifications to the global maximum power point bald eagle search-based (GMPP BES) method so that it runs as an MPPT as well. The modifications enable the GMPP BES method to detect minor changes in insolation and temperature by observing the changes in the PV array output voltage and, accordingly, trigger the search for the suitable MPP voltage. An experimental setup using a real-time digital simulator (RTDS) was utilized to evaluate the modified GMPP BES-based method under real c... [more]
