Numerical Study on the Effects of Water and Heat Transport on Two-Phase Flow in a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: finite volume method, heat transport, one-dimensional model, phase change, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell, two-phase flow
A one-dimensional transient non-isothermal model was developed to study the two-phase flow phenomenon in a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell. The model focused on the phase change between vapor and liquid water, and the transport of oxygen, hydrogen, water, and heat. The cell was discretized into 39 control volumes, and the finite volume method and the iteration method were used to solve the transport equations. The variations in the state parameters of the model during fuel cell operations were analyzed. The results showed that, when the inlet gas humidity was high, the vapor tended to condense in gas diffusion layer regions close to the gas channel. As temperatures in these regions were low, the vapor was more likely to condense. Liquid water appeared latest in the middle of the anode gas diffusion layer, because the vapor concentration in this area is always lower than its saturated value. A higher operating temperature in a cell is beneficial to prevent flooding at the cathode... [more]

Review of PV Solar Energy Development 2011−2021 in Central European Countries
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Central European countries, energy crisis, PV installations, solar energy
According to the data collected in 2022 during 5th International Off-Grid Renewable Energy Conference organized in Abu Dhabi by the International Renewable Energy Agency, the global energy requirements show a negative impact on approximately 785 million people facing energy poverty. The long-term energy sustainability solutions should consider off-grid solutions in the planning of an energy mix and be considered as interim both in remote and already urbanized areas. These measures require integrated planning and partnering with local distribution networks. The review presents the development of photovoltaic installations in Central European countries. For more than 40 years, this area belonged to different regimes and joined the European Union at various dates. Hence, the development of energy policies and cultural and social expectations differ even when based on the Green Deal presented by the European Union in 2020. The outcomes prove that even with a variety of policy measures, the... [more]

Solution of Probabilistic Optimal Power Flow Incorporating Renewable Energy Uncertainty Using a Novel Circle Search Algorithm
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: circle search algorithm, Optimization, probabilistic OPF, solar energy, wind energy
Integrating renewable energy sources (RESs) into modern electric power systems offers various techno-economic benefits. However, the inconsistent power profile of RES influences the power flow of the entire distribution network, so it is crucial to optimize the power flow in order to achieve stable and reliable operation. Therefore, this paper proposes a newly developed circle search algorithm (CSA) for the optimal solution of the probabilistic optimal power flow (OPF). Our research began with the development and evaluation of the proposed CSA. Firstly, we solved the OPF problem to achieve minimum generation fuel costs; this used the classical OPF. Then, the newly developed CSA method was used to deal with the probabilistic power flow problem effectively. The impact of the intermittency of solar and wind energy sources on the total generation costs was investigated. Variations in the system’s demands are also considered in the probabilistic OPF problem scenarios. The proposed method wa... [more]

Numerical and Experimental Study on Combustion Characteristics of Micro-Gas Turbine Biogas Combustor
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biogas combustion, DLE, emission, micro-gas turbine, Mixing
The use of biogas in land-based gas turbines for power generation is a promising approach to reducing greenhouse gases and our dependence on fossil fuels. The focus of this research was to investigate the fuel/air mixing and combustion performance in an DLE (dry low emission) type can combustor designed for a micro-gas turbine. The fuel and air mixing uniformity was studied considering the air flow characteristic and fuel injection performance through the numerical simulation. The influence of the fuel/air mixing characteristics on the combustion characteristics was studied by numerical simulation and experimental tests. The combustion characteristics studied included the temperature field in the combustor, the pattern factor at the combustor outlet, combustion efficiency, and pollutant emission characteristics. The results show the position of the fuel nozzle has little effect on the mixing uniformity due to the limited mixing space for the micro-gas turbine combustor, while there are... [more]

The Comprehensive Overview of Large-Volume Surfactant Slugs Injection for Enhancing Oil Recovery: Status and the Outlook
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alkali–surfactant–polymer flooding, chemical EOR, chemical reagents, enhanced oil recovery, pilot application, surfactant flooding, surfactant–polymer flooding
Despite the development of alternative energy sources, oil and gas still remain the predominant energy sources in most countries in the world. Due to gradual hydrocarbon reserve depletion and the existing downward trend in the production level, there is a need to search for methods and technical approaches to level off the falling rates. Chemically enhanced oil recovery methods (EOR) by surfactant solution injections are one of the possible approaches for addressing this issue in already developed fields. Most often, surfactants are injected together with polymers or alkalis. These technologies are called surfactant−polymer (SP) and alkali−surfactant−polymer (ASP) flooding. Basically, SP and ASP have been distributed in China and Canada. In this article, in addition to these countries, we paid attention to the results of pilot and full-scale tests of SP and ASP in Russia, Hungary, and Oman. This study was a comprehensive overview of laboratory and field tests of surfactant solutions us... [more]

Improvements to and Experimental Validation of PI Controllers Using a Reference Bias Control Algorithm for Wind Turbines
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hardware in the loop simulator (HILS), proportional–integral (PI) control, reference bias control (RBC), switching logic, wind tunnel testing
In this study, a reference bias control (RBC) algorithm for variable speed and variable pitch wind turbines was designed and validated. To improve the performance of conventional PI control algorithms, the RBC algorithm applies biased references to power and pitch angle to the pitch and the torque control loops, respectively. To validate the control performance of the improved RBC algorithm, hardware in the loop simulator (HILS) was conducted using a commercial programmable logic controller (PLC). The performance of a conventional PI control algorithm and the proposed RBC algorithm were compared for the target wind turbine model in terms of both the transition region and the rated power region. In the transition region, the proposed RBC algorithm improved the sudden dips in the generator torque and power, which often occur when using a control algorithm with a switching logic. As a result, the damage equivalent load (DEL) of the main shaft was reduced by 15%. In the rated power region,... [more]

Interaction between Droplets and Particles as Oil−Water Slurry Components
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
The characteristics of the collisions of droplets with the surfaces of particles and substrates of promising oil−water slurry components (oil, water and coal) were experimentally studied. Particles of coals of different ranks with significantly varying surface wettability were used. The following regimes of droplet−particle collisions were identified: agglomeration, stretching separation and stretching separation with child droplets. The main characteristics of resulting child droplets were calculated. Droplet−particle interaction regime maps in the B = f(We) coordinates were constructed. Equations to describe the boundaries of transitions between the droplet−particle interaction regimes (B = nWe) were obtained. The calculated approximation coefficients make it possible to predict threshold shifts in transition boundaries between the collision regimes for different fuel mixture components. Differences in the characteristics of secondary atomization of droplets interacting with particle... [more]

Implementation and Validation for Multitasks of a Cost-Effective Scheme Based on ESS and Braking Resistors in PMSG Wind Turbine Systems
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: braking resistors, energy storage super-capacitors, fault ride-through, permanent-magnet synchronous generator, wind turbine systems
This study deals with fault ride-through (FRT) capability and output power fluctuation suppression of wind turbine systems (WTS) having PMSG (permanent-magnet synchronous generator) for mitigating grid frequency variation and voltage flicker in the distribution system. The coordinated control of a cost-effective scheme based on energy storage supercapacitors (ESSs) and braking resistors (BR) is introduced to perform the multiple tasks of the WTS. In this hybrid scheme, the ESSs are initially used to absorb the fluctuated power component with the constraints of their ratings during the grid faults and wind speed variation conditions prior to the activation of the BRs when the ESSs cannot fully consume the mismatched power between the PMSG and grid during severe grid faults. With the additional BRs, the capacity of the costly ESSs is remarkably reduced, while the performance of the fault ride-through capability and power smoothening for the WTS are still kept satisfactory and in complian... Steam Gasification of Refuse-Derived Fuel with CaO Modification for Hydrogen-Rich Syngas Production
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CaO modification, H2-rich syngas, RDF, steam gasification, system modeling
Steam gasification of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) for hydrogen-rich syngas production was investigated in a lab-scale gasification system with CaO modification. A simulation model based on Aspen Plus was built to study the characteristics and the performance of the RDF gasification system. The influences of gasification temperature, steam to RDF ratio (S/R), and CaO adsorption temperature on the gas composition, heating value, and gas yield were evaluated. Under the gasification temperature of 960 °C and S/R of 1, H2 frication in the syngas increased from 47 to 67% after CaO modification at 650 °C. Higher syngas and H2 yield were obtained by increasing both S/R and gasification temperature. However, as the CaO adsorption temperature increased, a lower H2 fraction was obtained due to the limitation of the CaO adsorption capacity at high temperatures. The highest H2 fraction (69%), gas yield (1.372 m3/kg-RDF), and H2 yield (0.935 m3/kg-RDF) were achieved at gasification temperature of 960... [more]

Price-Guided Peer-To-Peer Trading Scheme and Its Effects on Transaction Costs and Network Losses
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electricity market, loss management, peer-to-peer(P2P) electricity trading, transaction guide
Distributed energy resources (DERs), such as small-scale renewable energy generators, storage systems, and controllable loads, have been attracting great attention. Accordingly, interest in peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading between prosumers with DERs is growing. The prosumers may perform the P2P electricity trading within the loss-guided framework, where network losses are primarily considered during the peer matching process. However, the loss-guided framework has limitations in that prosumer welfare is neglected in favor of prioritizing the network losses caused by the P2P transactions. Thus, in this study, a price-based framework for P2P electricity trading is suggested, where the prosumer welfare is considered by including not only network loss costs but also energy costs in the matching procedure. The effects of the suggested price-based framework on network efficiency, prosumer welfare, and social welfare are examined by comparing simulation results with the loss-guided framewor... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
The paper deals with the experimental study of a medium-load spark ignition engine under operation with different fuel mixtures among those deemed as promising for the transition towards carbon-free energy systems. In particular, the performance of a non-conventional ignition system, which permits the variation of the ignition energy, the spark intensity and duration, was studied fuelling the engine with 60−40% hydrogen−methane blends, three real syngas mixtures and one biogas. The paper is aimed to find the optimal ignition timing for minimum specific fuel consumption and the best setup of the ignition system for each of the fuel mixtures considered. To this end, a series of steady-state tests were performed at the dynamometer by varying the parameters of the ignition system and running the engine with surrogate hydrogen−methane−nitrogen mixtures that permit the simulation of hydrogen−methane blends, real syngas, and biogas. The results quantify the increase of spark advance associate... [more]

Keywords: downhole vibration, self-powered sensor, triboelectric nanogenerator
Because of their low flexibility, traditional vibration sensors cannot perform arbitrary bending adjustments when facing curved surfaces and other complex working conditions during the drilling process; therefore, this research proposes a ring-shaped vibration sensor (RSV−TENG) that can deform freely in the bending direction, and which can be used in working conditions where the inner bending angle of the drill pipe changes greatly. Test results show that the vibration frequency measurement range is from 4 Hz to 16 Hz, with a measurement error less than 4%, the vibration amplitude measurement range is less than 20 mm, with a measurement error less than 5%, the output voltage and current signal are 120 V and 60 nA, respectively, when three RSV−TENGs are connected in parallel, and the maximum output power is 6 × 10−7 W when the external resistance is 106 Ω. Compared with traditional downhole sensors, this sensor has self-powered and self-sensing functions, eliminating the shortcomings of... [more]

Numerical Comparative Study of Fuel Cavitation in Microchannels under Different Turbulence Models
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cavitation, injector, internal combustion engine, microchannel, model comparison
The fuel injector is a critical component of the internal combustion engine. The diameters of the injector nozzle and the control chamber’s oil inlet and outlet are generally between 0.2 and 0.5 mm, which are typical microchannel structures. During high-pressure injection, the cavitation phenomenon in the channel seriously affects the reliability of the internal combustion engine. The choice of turbulence and cavitation models is the key to investigate the cavitation in the microchannel by using numerical methods. Based on the Winklhofer microchannel fuel experiment, five representative turbulence models were used to construct a microchannel model, and the results were compared and analyzed with the experiment. The results show that the pressure gradient values obtained from the combination of RNG k-ε and ZGB models were similar to the experimental data, with an error of less than 6%. February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: exergoeconomic analysis, finite element methods, gas crossover, proton exchange membrane, renewable energy resources
Integrating the exergy and economic analyses of water electrolyzers is the pivotal way to comprehend the interplay of system costs and improve system performance. For this, a 3D numerical model based on COMSOL Multiphysics Software (version 5.6, COMSOL, Stockholm, Sweden) is integrated with the exergy and exergoeconomic analysis to evaluate the exergoeconomic performance of the proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) under different operating conditions (operating temperature, cathode pressure, current density) and design parameter (membrane thickness). Further, the gas crossover phenomenon is investigated to estimate the impact of gas leakage on analysis reliability under various conditions and criteria. The results reveal that increasing the operating temperature or decreasing the membrane thickness improves both the efficiency and cost of hydrogen exergy while increasing the gas leakage through the membrane. Likewise, raising the current density and the cathode pressure... [more]

Predictive Emission Management Based on Pre-Heating for Heavy-Duty Powertrains
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: emission reduction, engine aftertreatment, fuel-efficient vehicles, hybrid vehicles, model-based control, optimal control, SCR catalyst, thermal management
Hybrid electric vehicles are promising solutions to the need for cleaner transport. Their ability to drive fully electric also opens the possibility of zero local emission operation by turning off the internal combustion engine. However, prolonged periods with the engine turned off result in a cooldown of the aftertreatment system resulting in increased emissions when the engine is restarted. To remedy this problem, an emission management strategy that, based on pre-heating of the aftertreatment system, aims to reduce the impact of a prolonged engine-off event on NOx emissions is developed. The method works by locating each engine-off event and then handling each event separately using an optimization scheme that combines pre-heating and a causal heuristic emission management strategy. The individual events are linked using an equivalence factor that describes the decided trade-off between fuel and NOx. The equivalence factor can be chosen heuristically or iteratively to give the desir... [more]
