Arputhasamy Joseph Amalanathan, Maciej Zdanowski, Ramanujam Sarathi
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: additives, dielectric liquids, double layer, electric field, flow pattern, insulation diagnostics, interfacial zone, power transformers, reclamation, streaming current, sulfur
This paper presents a detailed review of the streaming electrification phenomena of different insulating fluids for power transformers. The comparison of different techniques used to assess the charging tendency of fluids is discussed depending on the flow type (planar or centrifugal), volume of oil, and interface material. The charge separation between the insulating fluid and metallic/pressboard interfaces is explained in terms of the electrical double layer formation involving a fixed layer and diffuse layer. Based on the experimental results, the streaming electrification is observed to be a function of various factors such as speed, temperature, electric field, and surface roughness. Depending on the molecular structure of insulating liquids that come into contact with solid insulation at the interface, the streaming current can increase; hence, a suitable additive (benzotriazole, fullerene, Irgamet 39) is selected based on the type of fluid and charge polarity. The degradation of... [more]

Keywords: experimental setup, heat exchanger, thermal performance, uniformity, velocity distribution
The thermal performance of fin-and-tube heat exchangers (HX) is a crucial aspect in a multitude of applications and fields; several design and operational parameters influence this performance. This study focuses on the issue of flow maldistribution and its effect on the HX thermal performance. For this purpose, an experimental setup is designed and implemented to emulate the conditions under which an automotive heat exchanger operates in regard to the non-uniform upstream airflow velocity distribution over the HX surface. The setup allows obtaining various configurations of airflow velocity non-uniformity of some desired mean velocity and standard deviation. The experimental results reveal that a higher degree of non-uniformity (higher standard deviation of the velocity distribution) causes an increased deterioration of the HX thermal performance. For example, at a water flowrate of 200 L/h and a mean airflow velocity of 2 m/s, increasing the standard deviation from 0 to 2 m/s (i.e.,... [more]

Keywords: Big Data, electrolysis, IoT, Machine Learning, methanation, power-to-X, synthetic gas
This study is a systematic analysis of selected research articles about power-to-X (P2X)-related processes. The relevance of this resides in the fact that most of the world’s energy is produced using fossil fuels, which has led to a huge amount of greenhouse gas emissions that are the source of global warming. One of the most supported actions against such a phenomenon is to employ renewable energy resources, some of which are intermittent, such as solar and wind. This brings the need for large-scale, longer-period energy storage solutions. In this sense, the P2X process chain could play this role: renewable energy can be converted into storable hydrogen, chemicals, and fuels via electrolysis and subsequent synthesis with CO2. The main contribution of this study is to provide a systematic articulation of advanced data-driven methods and latest technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), big data analytics, and machine learning for the efficient operation of P2X-related processes... February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery energy storage system, DAB converter, totem-pole converter
In this paper, a bidirectional converter with multi-mode control strategies is proposed for a battery energy storage system (BESS). This proposed converter, which is composed of a half-bridge-type dual-active-bridge (HBDAB) converter and an H-bridge inverter, is able to operate the BESS with different power conditions and achieve the DC−AC function for lower input DC voltage applications. For the HBDAB converter, the variable-frequency control (VFC) and phase-shift control (PSC) are both adopted to achieve zero-voltage switching over a wider power range and the battery module balance control capability for BESS, respectively. In addition, the interleaved configuration is used to reduce the current ripple and increase the overall current rating. For the H-bridge inverter, the unipolar control mode (UCM) and totem-pole control mode (TPCM) are adopted to manage the real and reactive current control under different AC grid conditions. The UCM offers a reduction in current ripple for real a... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aerodynamics, annual energy production, blade element method, blade performance characteristics, capacity factor, cost of energy, small wind turbine
During a turbine’s lifetime, minimizing the cost of power production should be the primary aim in addition to attaining high technical efficiency. Thus, this paper was aimed at enhancing the aerodynamic efficiency of a site-specific small wind turbine considering the cost of energy as one of the design parameters. The wind distribution of a specific site was employed to characterize the wind using the Weibull distribution method. The aerodynamics of a typical 5 kW wind turbine blade were investigated by implementing a blade element method (BEM) using a MATLAB code that applied the advancements and improvements with different modifications and which was validated by engaging computational fluid dynamics (Ansys-Fluent). The optimal pitch angle was then employed to further promote the performance characteristics of the blade. The cost of energy was reformulated in terms of rated power considering a cost variation of the main components that deviates with the rated power. Accordingly, the... [more]

Keywords: Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), Energy, failure, Multiple-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA), photovoltaic
Photovoltaic installations (PVs) are currently one of the fastest-growing sources of renewable energy. Expanded forms of financial support and higher electricity prices have resulted in a large increase in its installed capacity. PV installations are increasingly being ordered by industry and privates, often for installations capacity of several hundred kilowatts. In addition to the advantages, photovoltaic installations also have drawbacks. One of these is that the increase in the voltage in the power grid leads to the exclusion of individual installations from the grid. An important issue in the operation of photovoltaic installations is also their reliability during their lifetime. The reliability of photovoltaic installations depends on the random nature of the cloud cover as well as the material’s mechanical degradations. This paper presents a literature analysis using Citespace software in terms of reliability. A detailed bibliometric analysis has been performed to outline the ma... [more]

Keywords: borehole wall pressure, Coal, damage fracture law, experimental study, solid propellant blasting
The low permeability of coal seams has always been the main bottleneck restricting coalbed methane drainage. In this paper, a coal seam anti-reflection technology with solid-propellant blasting was proposed, and the composition and proportion of the solid propellants were determined based on the principle of oxygen balance. The authors designed a solid-propellant blasting damage fracture experiment of simulation coal, tested the impact pressure on a blast hole wall, measured the ultrasonic wave velocity, explosive strain and crack propagation velocity, and then revealed the blasting damage fracture process and mechanism of coal based on the experimental results and damage fracture mechanics theory. The history curve of impact pressure time can be divided into three processes including the slow pressurization process, dramatic increase process, and nonlinear pressure relief process. The pressure distribution along the whole blasting hole was uneven, and the peak pressure was relatively... [more]

Keywords: ant colony optimization (ACO), decision making, importance performance analysis (IPA), mechanical engineering, production engineering, quality of product
The current situation in the energy market contributes not only to the sales growth of photovoltaic panels (PV) but also to the intense search for possibilities for its improvement. The purpose of this research was to develop a model to determine, where possible, the most beneficial modifications to improve products. The model used combination techniques, i.e., the SMARTER method, brainstorming (BM), the 7 ± 2 rule, questionnaire, ant colony optimization (ACO), and importance-performance analysis (IPA). In addition, an algorithm supporting ACO was proposed in the MATLAB program. The test was carried out on PV and showed that it is possible to determine the way of product (PV) improvement by determining a sequence of modifications for product criteria states while simultaneously considering customers’ expectations. It was shown that each state of the short-circuit electricity and peak power was satisfactory for customers. It was necessary to modify the maximum current and idle voltage.... [more]
Gender Mainstreaming the European Union Energy Transition
Paula Carroll
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy transition, energy trilemma, gender equality, gender mainstreaming
This paper explores gender dimensions of the energy transition in the European Union (EU). The EU has set out its ambitions for an equitable transition to clean secure energy. It has also set out it objectives for gender equality. In this paper, I implement a systematic literature review to explore the intersection of gender issues with the energy transition in the EU. There is little peer reviewed literature in this area. Analysis of academic papers shows most focus on social science rather than technical or engineering problems. A critical review of the grey literature including EU policies and reports shows that there is a disconnect between EU gender equality and clean energy plans and that gender has yet to be mainstreamed into the EU energy transition. This review identifies opportunities to mainstream gender into EU energy policies by linking to EU gender equality objectives, and connecting to gender-energy research themes.

Keywords: AC characteristics, alkaline electrolyzer, DC characteristics, Hydrogen, measurements, Modelling, SPICE
This paper presents the results of investigations into modeling the DC and dynamic characteristics of an alkaline electrolyzer. A model of the device under consideration is proposed in the form of analytical relationships in which the coefficients depend on the concentration of the potassium hydroxide solution contained in the electrolyzer under consideration. The correctness of the proposed model is verified by comparing the calculated and measured current−voltage characteristics and the dependence of the module of the impedance of the electrolyzer on the frequency obtained at different values of the electrolyte concentration. The dependence of the time needed to produce a given portion of hydrogen on the supply current and the electrolyte concentration is also presented. Good compliance with the calculation and measurement results is obtained over a wide range of voltage and current, frequency, and concentration of the electrolyte.

In this paper, a methodology based on data-driven models is developed to predict the NOx emissions of an internal combustion engine using, as inputs, a set of ECU channels representing the main engine actuations. Several regressors derived from the machine learning and deep learning algorithms are tested and compared in terms of prediction accuracy and computational efficiency to assess the most suitable for the aim of this work. Six Real Driving Emission (RDE) cycles performed at the roll bench were used for the model training, while another two RDE cycles and a steady-state map of NOx emissions were used to test the model under dynamic and stationary conditions, respectively. The models considered include Polynomial Regressor (PR), Support Vector Regressor (SVR), Random Forest Regressor (RF), Light Gradient Boosting Regressor (LightGBR) and Feed-Forward Neural Network (ANN). Ensemble methods such as Random Forest and LightGBR proved to have similar performances in terms of prediction... [more]
The Role of Micro Gas Turbines in Energy Transition

Keywords: condition monitoring, energy transition, micro gas turbine, performance improvement
In the progressively rising decentralized energy market, micro gas turbines (MGT) are seen with great potential owing to their low emissions, fuel flexibility, and low maintenance. The current transformation in the landscape of electricity supply with an increasing share of fluctuant renewable energy resources and increasing complexity requires a reliable and energy-efficient power generation source to support the grid. In this scenario, small-scale power plants that are constructed based on micro gas turbines with up to 250 kW power range can play a substantial role in meeting the challenges of the modern electricity grid. Micro gas turbines provide a reliable and cost-effective power source with a quick load-following ability which can respond to demand peaks and compensate for intermittent renewable sources when they are not available. MGT units can work as a system together with renewables, or function as a stand-alone unit in off-grid operations. The features of micro gas turbines... [more]

Blast furnace gas is the major combustible by-product produced in the steel industry, where iron ore is reduced by coke into iron. Direct combustion of blast furnace gas after simple treatment for power generation is a common utilization method nowadays. However, this method suffers from low efficiency and high carbon intensity. The use of gas-steam combined cycle is an excellent method to improve the efficiency of blast furnace gas for power generation. However, there is a problem of insufficient utilization of low product heat, and the addition of CCS system can further reduce the power efficiency. To solve these issues, a new blast furnace gas power generation system with a Brayton cycle with supercritical CO2 and a Rankine cycle with transcritical CO2 is proposed in this work. The new system is then thermodynamically simulated by Aspen Plus, after the sub-modules are validated. The effects of molar ratio of steam to carbon, selexol/CO2 mass ratio, compression ratio, turbine import... [more]

The freight sector is expected to keep, or even increase, its fundamental role for the major modern economies, and therefore actions to limit the growing pressure on the environment are urgent. The use of electricity is a major option for the decarbonization of transports; in the heavy-duty segment, it can be implemented in different ways: besides full electric-battery powertrains, electricity can be used to supply catenary roads, or can be chemically stored in liquid or gaseous fuels (e-fuels). While the current EU legislation adopts a tailpipe Tank-To-Wheels approach, which results in zero emissions for all direct uses of electricity, a Well-To-Wheels (WTW) method would allow accounting for the potential benefits of using sustainable fuels such as e-fuels. In this article, we have performed a WTW-based comparison and modelling of the options for using electricity to supply heavy-duty vehicles: e-fuels, eLNG, eDiesel, and liquid Hydrogen. Results showed that the direct use of electric... [more]

The use of insects as a biofuel feedstock has received limited research, and little is known about the fuel characteristics of insect biofuel. Fuel properties characterization can guide researchers focused on renewable fuel for the internal combustion engine. Therefore, this investigation focused on the physical-chemical properties modification of Hermetia illucens larvae oil (HILO) and diesel fuel blends, which could highly become an alternative renewable fuel. Five test fuel blends of HILO and diesel fuel were prepared at 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% on a volume basis. Fuel properties such as chemical composition, density, viscosity, heating value, cetane number, and flash point of the test fuel blends were analyzed and compared to the diesel fuel. The main physical-chemical properties of HILO-diesel fuel blends were determined following the ASTM standards. Based on the results, the density, viscosity, cetane number, and flash point of the diesel fuel-HILO fuel blends were increased b... [more]

Keywords: decarbonization, electrolyzer, Hydrogen, hydrogen valley, Natural Gas, transmission network
Green hydrogen exploitation plays a crucial role in achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Hydrogen, in fact, provides a number of key benefits for the energy system, due to its integrability with other clean technologies for energy production and consumption. This paper is aimed at presenting the project of recovery of an abandoned industrial area located in central Italy by developing a site for the production of green hydrogen. To this aim, the analysis of the territorial and industrial context of the area allowed us to design the project phases and to define the sizing criteria of the hydrogen production plant. The results of a preliminary cost−benefit analysis show that a huge initial investment is required and that, in the short term, the project is sustainable only with a very large public grant. On the other hand, in the long term, the project is sustainable, and the benefits significantly overcome the costs.

Keywords: battery management system, battery wear, energy storage system, frequency regulation, state of health
Frequency regulation (FR) using a battery energy storage system (BESS) has been expanding because of the growth of renewable energy. This study introduces the wear density function, which considers battery degradation factors such as the rate of current, temperature, and depth of discharge (DOD) to provide a precise lifespan prediction. Furthermore, an equivalent system model is developed to evaluate the FR performance of the BESS for various operating parameters. Finally, a quantitative tradeoff relationship between performance and battery lifecycle is derived from the analysis using operational data of the actual BESS for FR.

Keywords: quad-active-bridge series-resonant (QABSR), reactive power, single-stage AC–DC converter, smart battery charges (SBC), solid-state transformer (SST), vehicle-to-grid (V2G)
Single-stage isolated and bidirectional (SSIB) AC−DC converters have a high potential for future solid-state transformers and smart battery chargers due to their reduced volume and high efficiency. However, there is a research gap for SSIB reactive power injection. This article introduces an SSIB three-phase AC−DC converter composed of three low frequency rectifiers linked by tiny film capacitors with a quad-active-bridge series-resonant (QABSR) DC−DC. A novel QAB modulation is proposed to solve three issues: (1) Three DC inputs with high ripple compensation, (2) active−reactive power injection, and (3) minimization of high-frequency (HF) transformers currents. The rectified grid voltages were modulated by time-variant duty ratio (DR) angles. In contrast, the DC source was modulated by a fixed DR (FDR) angle along with a phase-shift angle which changes according to the grid current amplitude. A constant HF current amplitude with minimum value was obtained. It is shown that the HF curre... [more]

Keywords: breakwater integrated, hybrid wave energy converters, laboratory tests, oscillating water column, overtopping devices, proof-of-concept
This paper presents the results of laboratory tests on a hybrid wave energy converter concept, the O2WC (Oscillating-Overtopping Water Column) device. The proposed device aims at providing an alternative to the classical OWC concept, storing part of the wave energy of the highly energetic sea states in a second chamber at atmospheric pressure, through overtopping phenomena. In this way, the maximum airflow rate and air pressure in the OWC chamber are reduced, possibly aiding the safe functioning of the air turbine, and allowing to exploit the excess of energy instead of dissipating it through by-pass valves. The performance of the device is investigated under different incident wave conditions, for different design parameters. The height of the overtopping threshold from the second chamber of the device which allows to maximize the performance has been selected. Results show that the decrease of the primary conversion efficiency of the OWC component of the device caused by the decrease... [more]

Keywords: converter-interfaced generation, frequency stability, power system inertia, power system stability, renewable power generators, rotor angle stability, voltage stability
The growing attention to environmental issues is leading to an increasing integration of renewable energy sources into electrical grids. This integration process could contribute to power system decarbonization, supporting the diversification of primary energy sources and enhancing the security of energy supply, which is threatened by the uncertain costs of conventional energy sources. Despite these environmental and economical benefits, many technological and regulatory problems should be fixed in order to significantly increase the level of penetration of renewable power generators, which are connected to power transmission and distribution systems via power electronic interfaces. Indeed, these converter-interfaced generators (CIGs) perturb grid operation, especially those fueled by non-programmable energy sources (e.g., wind and solar generators), affecting the system stability and making power systems more vulnerable to dynamic perturbations. To face these issues, the conventional... [more]

Keywords: cell performance deviation, electrical behaviors, lithium-ion battery, Modelling, voltage deviation
Owing to the variation between lithium-ion battery (LIB) cells, early discharge termination and overdischarge can occur when cells are coupled in series or parallel, thereby triggering a decrease in LIB module performance and safety. This study provides a modeling approach that considers the effect of cell variation on the performance of LIB modules in energy storage applications for improving the reliability of the power quality of energy storage devices and efficiency of the energy system. Ohm’s law and the law of conservation of charge were employed as the governing equations to estimate the discharge behavior of a single strand composing of two LIB cells connected in parallel based on the polarization properties of the electrode. Using the modeling parameters of a single strand, the particle swarm optimization algorithm was adopted to predict the discharge capacity and internal resistance distribution of 14 strands connected in series. Based on the model of the LIB strand to predic... [more]

Keywords: air-to-air heat pump (AAHP), energy simulations, ground source heat pump (GSHP), renewable energy sources, small modular house, zero-energy building (ZEB)
Energy security is becoming one of the most important issues today. Continuous increases in the prices of fossil fuels, firewood and wood pellets have become commonplace in many countries. One positive effect of this situation is the greater focus on the development of renewable energy technologies and the search for solutions to reduce the heat demands of residential buildings. The purpose of this paper is to present a small modular building that can be a response to the energy crisis and Ukraine’s wave of refugees in Poland. The results of the energy simulations performed in DesignBuilder software showed that this type of house has a primary energy demand of 139.35 kWh/m2. The calculations were performed for the climatic conditions of north-eastern Poland, assuming natural gas as the fuel. The use of a geothermal heat pump reduced this value to 90.14 kWh/m2. In order to achieve a zero primary energy balance, 23.76 m2 of PV panels and 4 m2 of solar thermal collectors should be install... [more]
