Remuneration Sensitivity Analysis in Prosumer and Aggregator Strategies by Controlling Electric Vehicle Chargers
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery storage system, electric vehicle charger, prosumer, remuneration, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sensitivity analysis
The efficient use of energy resources is profoundly changing power grid regulation and policy. New forms of power generation coupled with storage and the presence of new, increasingly flexible loads such as electric vehicles enable the development of multi-agent planning systems based on new forms of interaction. For instance, consumers can take advantage of flexibility by interacting directly with the grid or through aggregators that bridge the gap between these end-users and traditional centralised markets. This paper aims to provide insight into the benefits for aggregators and end-users from a financial perspective by proposing a methodology that can be applied to different scenarios. End-users may provide flexibility services related to private vehicle charging stations or battery storage systems. The paper will analyse different remuneration levels for end-users by highlighting the most beneficial scenarios for aggregators and end-users and providing evidence on potential conflic... [more]

Intensification of Bioethanol Production from Different Lignocellulosic Biomasses, Induced by Various Pretreatment Methods: An Updated Review
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biofuels, delignification, Energy Conversion
While world energy demand has certainly decreased with the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the need has been significantly on the rise since 2021, all as the world’s fossil fuel resources are depleting; it is widely accepted that these resources emit greenhouse gases (GHG), which are the leading cause for the climate crisis. The main contributors to global warming are manufacturing, energy, and agriculture. The agricultural sector is composed of diversified and potential mobilizable sources of waste which can become an attractive alternative to fossil fuels for energy production, and thus sequester and use carbon. Therefore, a paradigm shift towards more sustainable energy alternatives, efficient waste management, and new technologies is necessary. One good solution is the energetic valorization of lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) which can also originate from agricultural wastes. The biomass consists of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, which are sources of fermentable su... [more]

Increase Butanol Production from Corn Straw by Mineral Compounds Supplementation
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ABE fermentation, Biofuels, enzymatic hydrolysis, lignocellulosic biomass
In this study, two types of fermentation methods: SSF and consolidation SHF/SSF were used for production of acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) from corn straw as a feedstock. Clostridium acetobutylicum DSM1731 was used as the fermenting organism. Corn straw was thermochemically pretreated and then hydrolyzed using three types of enzymes. The impact has been investigated on the effect of mineral compounds supplementation ((NH4)2SO4, MgSO4, (NH4)3PO4) on ABE productivity and butanol content. From the SSF, where mineral salts were supplemented into the fermentation medium, it was found that the maximum ABE and butanol concentrations were 28.35 g/L and 24.03 g/L, respectively, corresponding to a productivities of 0.295 g/L/h (ABE) and 0.250 g/L/h (butanol). In the consolidation SHF/SSF method with mineral compounds supplementation, the maximum ABE and butanol concentrations were 31.35 g/L and 28.64 g/L, respectively, corresponding to productivities of 0.327 g/L/h (ABE) and 0.298 g/L/h (butanol)... February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy losses, friction force, injection apparatus, internal combustion engines, measurements, precision pairs
This article reviews the state of the knowledge and technology in the field of friction-loss measurements in internal combustion piston engines. The dependencies that describe the loss of energy in combustion engines and injection apparatus are presented. Currently, very little can be found in the literature on the study of frictional forces in injection apparatus, but mainly in the piston−cylinder group, so this work significantly fills that gap. The aim of this article is to construct a device and to develop a method for assessing the technical state of injector nozzles to minimize friction losses in internal combustion engines at the stages of evaluation, design, production and operation. This article presents a stand for determining the maximum friction forces due to gravity loading by water-jet control. This article also presents test results on the maximum friction force between a needle and a body of injector nozzles in piston combustion engines on a designed and purpose-built s... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: emulation, hardware-in-the-loop, maximum power point tracking, permanent magnet synchronous generator, wind energy conversion systems, wind turbines
This article studies the stator windings asymmetry fault in direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous generator(PMSG)-based wind turbines (WTs), having passive converters at the generator side, through developing a power-hardware-in-the-loop (P-H-i-L) system. It is based on a digital real-time simulation (DRTS) of turbine blades, a wind generator in the abc reference frame, and a three-phase diode rectifier mathematical models. The DC voltage, provided by the model of the three-phase diode rectifier, is linked to a one-level hardware boost converter by using a programmable DC power supply. Furthermore, the maximum power point tracking technique, based on the optimal torque, is evaluated when the one-level boost converter supplies a resistive load. Stator windings asymmetry fault in the PMSG is identified by analyzing the rectifier output voltage, the rotor speed, and the electrical signatures of the boost converter. It shows that this kind of fault clearly gives rise to the amplitudes... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biomass, bituminous coal, fluidized bed, Miscanthus giganteus, oxy-fuel combustion, Salix viminalis, Scots pine, Sida hermaphrodita, wheat straw
In recent years, global warming and climate change associated with emissions of CO2 from fossil fuel-fired power systems are a big worry for authorities in many countries worldwide. The utilization of biomass as an alternative, carbon-neutral fuel can reduce emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases. Furthermore, the coupling of oxy-combustion of biomass with CO2 capture is an option for carbon-negative power generation technology. In this study, emissions of NOx, SO2, and CO from the air- and oxy-combustion of three energy crops (Miscanthus giganteus, Sida hermaphrodita, and Salix viminalis) are presented and compared with emissions from other biomass fuels and reference coal. Combustion tests in air and O2/CO2 mixtures were conducted in a 12-kW bench-scale CFB combustor at 850 °C. Measurements of flue gas compositions were taken using an FTIR spectrometer. In all tested atmospheres, emissions of SO2, N2O, and CO for biomass were lower than those for the reference coal. The oxidatio... [more]

Optimal Allocation of Renewable Energy Sources and Battery Storage Systems Considering Energy Management System Optimization Based on Fuzzy Inference
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery storage, distributed generation, energy loss reduction, fuzzy inference system, metaheuristic optimization, power distribution system
The main problem in planning the optimal operation of renewable energy sources and battery storage systems is the amount of data that must be considered to cover an entire observation period. If the observation period is one year, the characteristic days or averaged data (daily, weekly or monthly averages) are considered to reduce the number of data. Since the average values of the entered data differ from the actual values, it is better to work with hourly or 15-min data at the annual level. The study presents a framework for solving the problem of the optimal allocation and operation of renewable energy sources and battery storage systems. The proposed method simultaneously solves the optimal allocation and energy management problem considering hourly data at the annual level. The fuzzy inference-based system is proposed for scheduling optimal profiles of battery storage systems and renewable energy sources. The developed fuzzy inference system manages the power factors of the photov... [more]

S4 Framework for the Integration of Solar Energy Systems in Small and Medium-Sized Manufacturing Companies in Mexico
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: photovoltaic panel, photovoltaic system, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar energy
Currently, the industrial sector consumes more than 60% of the energy produced in Mexico, mainly from fossil fuels, causing negative impacts on the environment and human beings. Solar energy helps companies diversify their energy sources, generate savings, and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Moreover, the environmental impact can be reduced when CO2 emissions are reduced. Nevertheless, in Mexico, less than 3.5% of the electricity comes from solar energy, and along with a lack of information about the technical and social aspects involved in photovoltaic (PV) systems, it is difficult for companies to analyze and evaluate relevant data, and thus make effective decisions based on their needs. As such, companies cannot understand the complete lifecycle of PV systems, and, usually, the economic, environmental, and technical decisions are made only using the installation analysis, which is only one stage in the lifespan of PV systems. This paper proposes an S4 framework with the sensing,... [more]

Dynamics of Pressure Evolution during Gaseous Ethane−Air Mixture Explosions in Enclosures: A Review
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: deflagration index, ethane, explosion time, maximum explosion pressure, maximum rates of pressure rise
The study here presents data from the literature regarding the characteristic parameters of explosion propagation in gaseous ethane−air mixtures. The maximum explosion pressures, maximum explosion times, maximum rates of pressure increase, and deflagration indices from experimental measurements are discussed and analyzed against the initial pressure, initial temperature, and equivalence ratio, as well as the explosion vessel characteristics. Ethane is used for ethylene production, as a refrigerant in cryogenic systems, as an alternative clean fuel in the power generation industry and automotive propulsion, and for many other applications. Therefore, the explosion characteristics of its mixtures with air are of great interest for explosions occurring after accidentally forming flammable mixtures, as well as for the prediction of combustors’ performances and/or engines that work in different conditions.

Short-term, automated car rental services, i.e., car sharing, are a solution that has been improving in urban transportation systems over the past few years. Due to the intensive expansion of the systems, service providers face increasing challenges in their competitiveness. One of them is to meet the customer expectations for the fleet of vehicles offered in the system. Although this aspect is noted primarily in the literature review on fleet optimization and management, there is a gap in research on the appropriate selection of vehicle models. In response, the article aimed to identify the vehicles best suited for car-sharing systems from the customer’s point of view. The selection of suitable vehicles was treated as a multi-criteria decision-making issue; therefore, the study used ELECTRE III—one of the multi-criteria decision-making methods. The work focuses on researching the opinions of users who rarely use car-sharing services in Poland. The most popular car models in 2021, equi... [more]

Theoretical and Numerical Study on Thermal Insulation Performance of Thermal Barrier Coatings
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: conjugate heat transfer, film cooling, sensitivity analysis, thermal barrier coating
In this article, a theoretical 1-D heat transfer model and conjugate heat transfer numerical simulation was carried out to evaluate the thermal insulation of TBCs under different factors. The relationship of temperature-drop between the inner or outer surface of thermal barrier coating (TBC) was investigated by conjugate heat transfer numerical simulation. The effect of TBC and the coupling between the internal and external heat transfer are obtained, which indicates that TBC and film cooling can both contribute to an overall cooling performance. In addition, the combination of the two results are better results than the two alone. However, the two weaken each other’s contribution to the overall cooling performance. Meanwhile, unlike the effect of film cooling, the change in the internal heat transfer coefficient basically does not affect the thermal insulation effect of coatings. Furthermore, sensitive analysis on the different levels of film cooling and coating’s thermal insulation w... [more]

In order to ensure the safety and extend the lifecycle of lithium-ion power batteries in electric vehicles, a battery thermal management system based on minichannel liquid cooling is proposed to cool rectangular lithium-ion batteries, and a three-dimensional cooling system model is established. The effects of the number of channels, the thickness of heat conducting silicone grease and the thermal conductivity of the battery itself on the temperature rise and voltage drop changes during the discharge process of the battery are studied. The results show that the maximum temperature of the battery decreases with the increase of the number of channels, and the voltage drop inside the channel increases with the increase of the number of channels. The maximum temperature of the battery increases with the increase of the thickness of the thermal grease, but the increase is only 1.26 K. February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: damageability, data acquisition, economic factors, efficiency, gas turbine engine, life cycle, life test, Modelling
The task of choosing the modes and duration of life tests of complex technical objects, such as aircraft engines, is a complex and difficult-to-formalize task. Experimental optimization of the parameters of life tests of complex technical objects is costly in terms of material and time resources, which makes such an approach to the choice of test parameters practically difficult. The problem of life test optimization for gas turbine engines on the basis of the engine life cycle information support and statistical modeling is discussed. Within the framework of the research, the features of the optimization of life tests based on simulation modeling of the life cycle of gas turbine engines were studied. The criterion of the efficiency of the life tests was introduced, and this characterized the predicted effect (technical and economic) of the operation of a batch of engines, the reliability of which was confirmed by life tests; a method of complex optimization of resource tests in the li... Three-Dimensional Modeling for the Internal Shorting Caused Thermal Runaway Process in 20Ah Lithium-Ion Battery
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat dissipation, internal short circuit, lithium-ion battery, numerical simulation, thermal runaway
Better understanding of how internal short circuit causes thermal runaway will benefit the engineering for safer lithium-ion batteries. In this study, three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations of a 20Ah lithium battery under internal shorting condition are performed. The effects of internal short circuit area, resistance, penetration depth, convective heat transfer coefficient and internal short circuit position, on the thermal runaway are investigated with the simulations in this work. This study demonstrates that the average cell temperature is only weakly affected by the internal short circuit area, penetration depth, and position. On the other hand, the internal short circuit resistance and the convective heat transfer coefficient have large impacts on the thermal runaway propagation in the lithium-ion battery. A high convective heat transfer coefficient can effectively suppress the thermal runaway propagation. However, such a high convective heat transfer coefficient is hard to... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: anionic-nonionic surfactant, competitive adsorption, hall curve derivative method, injectability, medium and low permeability, partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide
Injectability of the polymer solution is a very important factor that determines the effectiveness of polymer flooding for enhanced oil recovery. Here, the medium and low permeability oil reservoir was taken as a research object, and effects of relative molecular weight, concentration and core permeability on the flow and injection performance of a partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) solution with and without anionic-nonionic surfactant (ANS) were studied by indoor outcrop core physical model experiments. It was found that the influence of HPAM concentration on the flow performance was related to the core permeability. When the core permeability was lower than 59 mD, the resistance factor and residual resistance factor of HPAM increased with increasing the concentration. High molecular weight and low core permeability were not conducive to the injectability of HPAM solutions. The addition of ANS was beneficial in enhancing the injectability of HPAM solution by reducing the criti... [more]

Modified Cascaded Controller Design Constructed on Fractional Operator ‘β’ to Mitigate Frequency Fluctuations for Sustainable Operation of Power Systems
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dragonfly search algorithm, fractional operator, load frequency control, modified cascade controller, renewable energy resources
The demand for energy is increasing at an abrupt pace, which has highly strained the power system, especially with high share of power generation from renewable energy sources (RES). This increasing strain needs to be effectively managed for a continuous and smooth operation of the power system network. Generation and demand exhibit a strong correlation that directly creates an impact on the power system frequency. Fluctuations and disruptions in load frequency can manifest themselves as over-voltages and physical damages in the power grid and, in the worst case, can lead to blackouts. Thus, this paper proposed an effective solution to mitigate the load frequency problem(s), which is initiated by the changing load demand under high penetration of RES. This paper presented an improved cascaded structure, the proportional integral with a fractional operator coupled with proportional derivative PI−FOP+PD. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ANSYS Fluent, castor biodiesel, jatropha biodiesel, penetration length, Sauter mean diameter, spray characteristics, spray cone angle
Fuel spray characteristics influence combustion, which in turn has a direct impact on engine performance and emissions. Recently, there has been an increasing interest in novel castor oil biodiesel. However, few investigations have been performed that combine both numerical and experimental biodiesel spray analyses. Hence, in this paper, we aim to explore the spray behavior of castor and jatropha biodiesel by employing numerical and experimental methods under non-evaporating, varying injection, and ambient conditions. The experimental study was carried out in a control volume vessel (CVV) at high injection and ambient pressures. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: arc-shaped fins, bifurcated fins, entropy generation, Fluent, heat transfer enhancement, latent heat storage units
Latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) technology can alleviate the mismatch between the supply and demand of solar energy and industrial waste heat, but the low thermal conductivity of phase change materials (PCMs) is an issue that needs to be solved. In this work, the effects of the bifurcated fins on melting and solidification are studied, and local and global entropy generation are discussed. The radial lag time and the circumferential lag time were defined to evaluate thermal penetration and thermal uniformity. Subsequently, a novel arc-shaped fin configuration was proposed to further enhance the heat transfer. The results showed that attaching the bifurcated fins could effectively reduce the global entropy generation. Increasing the trunk fin length was beneficial to enhance the thermal uniformity and promote the melting process, while increasing the branch fin was more effective in the solidification process. Overall, thermal uniformity determined the phase change process. M... [more]

This paper presents the results of theoretical and experimental studies to determine the optimal thickness of thermal insulation from basalt fiber and aerogel products for pipelines at temperatures of 300 and 600 °C. We carried out a comparison of the key thermophysical characteristics of the claimed heat-insulating materials. In this paper, the dynamic process of inverter based on the cascode Gallium nitride (GaN) high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) for the photovoltaic (PV) application is analyzed in detail. The parasitic inductors and capacitors have been considered in our proposed equivalent model, which can explain the phenomenon that the crossover time of the voltage and current is prolonged by the parasitic parameters. The influence of the parasitic parameters is identified through theoretical analysis. By analyzing the influence of parasitic parameters, the design process of high-frequency inverter can be optimized. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biomass gasification, Carbon Dioxide Capture, Hydrogen, kinetic models, NTP, plasma reactor
Global warming, along with increasing global energy demands, has led to the need for a sustainable and low-carbon-based energy economy. In addition to renewable energy technologies, such as biomass, solar, hydro, and wind, another possible strategy to mitigate climate change is the capture/conversion and recycling of CO2. In recent years, many methods for both CO2 capture (mainly adsorption, absorption, and membrane) and conversion (many electrolysis, catalyst, and plasma) have been investigated. Conversion technology is less studied but seems to be very promising. Within that, non-thermal plasma technology has received much interest because it works at low temperatures and atmospheric pressure, and there is no need for high temperature and high electricity consumption, which are typical of the catalyst and electrolysis conversion processes, respectively. Therefore, in order to optimize this emerging technology, simulative kinetic models have been developed with the aim of maximizing b... [more]
