Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: comprehensive literature review, demand side management, distributed energy system, distributed generation, electric vehicles, energy storage systems, smart markets
Distributed energy resources have been increasingly integrated into electrical grids. Consequently, electricity markets are expected to undergo changes and become more complex. However, while there are many scientific publications on the topic, a broader discussion is still necessary. Therefore, a systematic literature review on electricity markets in the context of distributed energy resources integration was conducted in this paper to present in-depth discussions on the topic, along with shedding light on current perspectives, the most relevant sources, authors, papers, countries, metrics, and indexes. The software R and its open-source tool Bibliometrix were used to perform the systematic literature review based on the widely recognized databases Web of Science and Scopus, which led to a total of 1685 articles after removing duplicates. The results demonstrate that demand response, renewable energy, uncertainty, optimization, and smart grid are the most-used keywords. By assessing h... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Energy Storage, intuitionistic fuzzy sets, MARCOS, MEREC, multi-attribute decision analysis, rank sum, Sustainability
The energy storage is an important character for sustainable energy structures and the prospective future economy. This paper aims to propose a multi-attribute decision analysis (MADA) approach to prioritize and choose the energy storage system (ESS) alternatives in terms of the different technical, economic, environmental and social aspects of them. In this line, an integrated approach is developed with the combination of intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IFSs), a method using the removal effects of criteria (MEREC), rank sum (RS) and the measurement of the alternatives and ranking based on compromise solution (MARCOS) methods for prioritizing the ESSs. The IF-MEREC-RS was used to find the integrated weight by combining the objective and subjective weights of the different indicators for prioritizing the ESSs. The MARCOS method was implemented to rank the various ESSs over several crucial indicators of sustainability. The practical outcome illustrates that the Li-ion battery (LIB) is the bes... [more]

Inertia Estimation of Synchronous Devices: Review of Available Techniques and Comparative Assessment of Conventional Measurement-Based Approaches
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: frequency stability, inertia estimation, power-system dynamics, swing equation, synchronous devices
The increasing deployment of renewable energy sources (RESs) reduces the inertia levels of modern power systems, raising frequency stability issues. Therefore, it becomes crucial, for power-system operators, to monitor system inertia, in order to activate proper preventive remedial actions in a timely way, ensuring, this way, the reliable and secure operation of the power system. This paper presents a brief review of available techniques for inertia estimation of synchronous devices. Additionally, a comparative assessment of conventional measurement-based inertia-estimation techniques is performed. In particular, five conventional inertia-estimation techniques are considered and examined. The distinct features of each method are presented and discussed. The effect of several parameters on the accuracy of the examined methods is evaluated via Monte Carlo analysis. The performance of the examined methods is evaluated using dynamic responses, obtained via RMS simulations, conducted on the... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat exchanger effectiveness, heliostat field, printed circuit heat exchangers, recompression Brayton cycle, Solar Thermal, supercritical carbon dioxide
One of the most promising concentrated solar power technologies is the central receiver tower power station with heliostat field, which has attracted renewed research interest in the current decade. The introduction of the sCO2 recompression Brayton cycles in the near future installations instead of the Rankine cycle is very probable, due to the prospects of a significant efficiency improvement, process equipment size and capital cost reduction. In this study, energy and exergy analysis of a recompression Brayton cycle configuration for a central receiver power station are performed. Special emphasis is given to the computation of actual performance for the High-Temperature Recuperator and the Low-Temperature Recuperator. The results define realistic thermal and exergetic efficiency limits for the specific cycle configurations applied on a central receiver solar power plant with variable turbine entry temperature. Thermal efficiency, predicted with the improved accuracy of heat exchang... [more]

Reliability Enhancement of Photovoltaic Systems under Partial Shading through a Two-Step Module Placement Approach
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: efficiency, maximum power point, partial shading, power loss, reconfiguration, Solar Photovoltaic
Partial shading has a negative impact on photovoltaic systems by forcing the connected modules to generate lower power, creating severe unexpected power losses. To resolve this issue, numerous solutions have been proposed, among which configuration modification has recently attracted a greater audience. The preliminary approach to module reconfiguration was based on the alteration of electrical connections through switches, which introduces lag due to the large number of switches and sensors, complex algorithms, and impractical application. Hence, static techniques are considered to be a cost-effective, low-complexity and easy-to-adopt solution for efficiently reducing the losses due to shading. Hence, this paper proposes a two-step module replacement approach that is validated under multiple partial shading conditions, and the performance is compared with various conventional and hybrid configurations and a static electrical reconfiguration technique using mathematical analysis, compa... Far-Wake Meandering of a Wind Turbine Model with Imposed Motions: An Experimental S-PIV Analysis
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: far wake meandering, far wake power fluctuation, floating offshore wind turbine, imposed motions, stereoscopic particle image velocimetry, wind-tunnel experiment
Intra-array wake meandering increases fatigue loading in downstream turbines and decreases farm total power output. In the case of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs), the motions of the floating substructure could have a non-neglectable contribution to wake meandering dynamics. This research experientially analyses the influence of imposed motions on the far-wake meandering of a FOWT. The study considers a 1:500 scaled porous disc representation of the 2 MW FLOATGEN system (BW Ideol) located off the coast of Le Croisic, France. A representative marine neutral atmospheric boundary layer is generated in a wind tunnel whilst monochromic and multi-frequency content three degrees of freedom (surge, heave, pitch) motion is imposed on the model tower. The stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (S-PIV) is then utilised to measure velocity vectors at a cross-section located at 8.125 D downstream of the model. No significant effect on the far-wake recovery in the velocity, turbulence and t... [more]

Modern Supercapacitors Technologies and Their Applicability in Mature Electrical Engineering Applications
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric double-layer capacitors, energy storage devices, hybrid capacitors, pseudocapacitors, supercapacitors
Supercapacitors can store a million times more energy per unit mass or volume compared to electrolytic capacitors. Due to their low internal resistance, they are capable of driving or absorbing pulsative high currents. Over the last quarter, century supercapacitor (SC) manufacturers have developed several families of mass-scale devices with high-power density and a longer cycle life that helped the end-users to improve their energy storage systems and products. Today, there are three common device families, namely, (i) symmetrical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs), (ii) hybrid capacitors with a lithium electrode, and (iii) battery capacitors based on pseudo capacitance concepts. This review paper compares these families and provides an overview of several state-of-the-art applications in electric vehicles (EVs), microgrids, and consumer electronics.

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alternative fuel components, hydrodesulphurisation, plastic, pyrolysis oil, used tyres
This study aimed to determine the effect of the supplied pyrolysis oils (oils obtained from the pyrolysis of used tyres and the depolymerisation of plastics) on the activity of the hydrodesulphurisation catalyst. Each pyrolysis oil was added at 20% weight to a standard feedstock and processed on pilot plant reactors under the set conditions of a commercial unit, including an activated catalyst. Following the catalyst stabilisation, the standard material was changed to the mixture with the pyrolysis oils. The reaction conditions, particularly the reaction temperature, were controlled. The results of the product analyses were compared with the EN 590 standard for evaluating diesel fuel; the hydrogenated mixed fuel meets most requirements. Only the density, flash point, distillation curve and lubricity have minor deviations, which could be adjusted by treating the sample before or after hydrogenation. The properties of the products, in terms of the low-temperature properties, were also in... [more]

Experts versus the Public: Perceptions of Siting Wind Turbines and Performance Concerns
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: expert-public perceptions, siting, wind turbines
Experiences of wind turbines (WT) shape public perception and acceptance of the technology, influencing government policy, deployment, and land-use policies of wind turbines. This paper attempts to find changes in public perceptions over the last three decades and differences between experts and the public over different land-use options. A semi-structured questionnaire that integrates a visual survey of 10 images of WT technology in different urban, landscape and seascape settings was presented to both groups. The perceptions of siting, proximity, landscape type, and maturity of urban wind turbines’ technology in renewable energy generation were contrasted. The results revealed that both the public and experts alike significantly preferred images of WT inclusion in seascape and landscape settings and responded negatively to images of WT as an addition to buildings in urban contexts. Images of wind turbines around transport settings were ranked in the second set of acceptances, after l... [more]

Transport Sustainability Index: An Application Multicriteria Analysis
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Diesel, fuzzy logic, recognition system, sustainability index, sustainable transport
The unrestricted consumption of fossil fuels negatively impacts the economic, social and environmental aspects, observed from a sustainable perspective. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and adopt skills that enable the monitoring and mitigation of risks to the environment. In view of this, we propose a method with multiple approaches emphasizing a three-dimensional perspective of energy consumption by diesel engines, which represent one of the main pollutants emitters in transport. As a methodology, fuzzy logic was adopted, together with a recognition system, in order to mitigate the uncertainties inherent to the applied data. The procedure was applied to the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with information collected from seven toll plazas and a radar with volumetric counting. The results indicate a good adherence of the sustainability index to real cases, allowing a better observation of changes in environmental criteria and a more efficient inspection in the application of good... Synthesis of Biodiesel via Interesterification Reaction of Calophyllum inophyllum Seed Oil and Ethyl Acetate over Lipase Catalyst: Experimental and Surface Response Methodology Analysis
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, Box–Behnken design, Calophyllum inophyllum seed oil, enzymatic, interesterification
Biodiesel is increasingly being considered as an alternative to the fossil fuel as it is renewable, nontoxic, biodegradable, and feasible for mass production. Biodiesel can be produced from various types of vegetable oils. Calophyllum inophyllum seed oil (CSO) is among the prospective nonedible vegetable oils considered as a raw material for biodiesel synthesis. The most common process of the biodiesel manufacturing is the transesterification of vegetable oils which results in glycerol as a by-product. Thus, product purification is necessary. In this work, an alternative route to biodiesel synthesis through interesterification reaction of vegetable oil and ethyl acetate was conducted. By replacing alcohol with ethyl acetate, triacetin was produced as a side product rather than glycerol. Triacetin can be used as a fuel additive to increase the octane number of the fuel. Therefore, triacetin separation from biodiesel products is needless. The interesterification reaction is catalyzed by... [more]

The Optimal Configuration of Wave Energy Conversions Respective to the Nearshore Wave Energy Potential
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: evolutionary algorithms, nearshore sites, optimal configuration, Wave Energy, wave energy converters
Ocean energy is one potential renewable energy alternative to fossil fuels that has a more significant power generation due to its better predictability and availability. In order to harness this source, wave energy converters (WECs) have been devised and used over the past several years to generate as much energy and power as is feasible. While it is possible to install these devices in both nearshore and offshore areas, nearshore sites are more appropriate places since more severe weather occurs offshore. Determining the optimal location might be challenging when dealing with sites along the coast since they often have varying capacities for energy production. Constructing wave farms requires determining the appropriate location for WECs, which may lead us to its correct and optimum design. The WEC size, shape, and layout are factors that must be considered for installing these devices. Therefore, this review aims to explain the methodologies, advancements, and effective hydrodynamic... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air-source heat pump, COP, enhanced vapor injection, solar-air collector
In this paper, a solar-assisted enhanced vapor injection air-source heat pump (SC-EVIHP) system was built to investigate its heating performance in cold regions. A typical-weather day in Harbin was selected for the experiment, and the heating characteristics of the SC-EVIHP system were explored under variable working conditions. The experimental results showed that the system was greatly affected by solar radiation intensity. On typical-weather days in winter, the maximum values for the heating capacity and COP of the system appeared at the time of maximum radiation intensity. Compared with conventional enhanced vapor injection air-source heat pump systems (EVI-ASHPs), the heating capacity and COP were increased by 24.9% and 12.5% at most, respectively. The COP of the system increased by at most 11.1% under conditions where the outdoor temperature was −12 °C and the outlet hot air temperature of the solar air collector was 40 °C. A Theoretical Model of the Gasification Rate of Biomass and Its Experimental Confirmation
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biomass, coefficient, gasification, mathematical model, pellets, rate, straw, wood
The gasification rate of fuel, biomass gasification in particular, is an important parameter which is worth considering in the process of creating a gasifier with a continuous operation process. The gasification of biomass is a complex thermochemical process. The theoretical and practical studies of the gasification rate of biomass are complicated because of a high thermochemical rate of reactions in the functioning zones of a gasifier. The complexity of the study prevents the achievement of the required accuracy of the analytical model of the gasification rate of biomass. The known theoretical models of the gasification rate only partially describe the dynamics of the gasification rate of biomass. Moreover, most scientific studies are focused on establishing the effects of gasifier parameters and the gasification process on the quality indicators of the received gas but not on the gasification rate of fuel. To build an accurate model of the gasification rate the authors propose a seri... [more]

Investigation on the Propagation Mechanisms of a Hydraulic Fracture in Glutenite Reservoirs Using DEM
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DEM, fracture propagation, glutenite, hydraulic fracturing, stress heterogeneity
The geometry heterogeneity induced by embedded gravel can cause severe stress heterogeneity and strength heterogeneity in glutenite reservoirs, and subsequently affect the initiation and propagation of hydraulic fractures. Since the discrete element method (DEM) can accurately describe the inter-particle interactions, the macromechanical behavior of glutenite specimen can be preciously represented by DEM. Therefore, the initiation and propagation mechanisms of hydraulic fractures were investigated using a coupling seepage-DEM approach, the terminal fracture morphologies of hydraulic fractures were determined, and the effects of stress differences, permeability, and gravel strength were studied. The results show that the initiation and propagation of hydraulic fractures are significantly influenced by embedded gravel. In addition, the stress heterogeneity and strength heterogeneity induced by the gravel embedded near the wellbore increase local initiation points, causing a complicated f... [more]

Reference Test Method for Calculating the Thermal Effect of Coal Spontaneous Combustion
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coal spontaneous combustion, heating rate, oxidation heat effect, physical similarity reference test, positive temperature difference leading
During a heating experiment, there are two sources of heat that increase the temperature of a coal sample: the heat released by the oxidation reaction of the coal itself, and the heat provided by the experimental system. Here, we propose a method for measuring the thermal effect of oxidation and self-ignition through a reference experiment conducted with a material that is physically similar to coal but does not combust. The reference material used was an aggregate of alumina, fly ash, and concrete, and experiments were conducted on both materials simultaneously. The temperature of the coal sample was obtained under self-heating conditions, and compared with that of the non-combusting material. The relationship of temperature as a function of time for both materials was determined from the data, the comparison of which allowed for the thermal effect of oxidation and coal spontaneous combustion (CSC) to be calculated. This paper presents the impact of flow changes in the Warta River and water management rules regarding the Jeziorsko dam reservoir on the energy production by the hydropower plant in the period 1995−2021. The Jeziorsko dam reservoir was built in 1986. It is the second largest dam reservoir in Poland in terms of surface area. In 1994, a hydropower plant with an installed capacity of 4.89 MW started operation. The study results show the average annual energy production from 1995 to 2021 at a level of 18,718 MWh. On the other hand, energy production largely changed from year to year, from 12,432 MWh (in 2019) to 26,916 MWh (in 2001). The droughts that have occurred in the Warta River basin over the past two decades have had a major impact on energy production. As a consequence of the drought, it was not possible to maintain the required water level in the reservoir. Moreover, a change in the rules for the reservoir’s management that led to lower water levels in the reservoir by 1.5 m betw... [more]

Keywords: FTIR, HCHO, laboratory testing, on-road testing, QCL-IR, transport emissions
Formaldehyde (HCHO), a carcinogenic carbonyl compound and precursor of tropospheric ozone, can be found in vehicle exhaust. Even though the continuous monitoring of HCHO has been recommended, the real-world emissions from the road transport sector are not commonly available. The main reason for this knowledge gap has been the difficulty to measure HCHO in real-time and during real-world testing. This, for instance, increases the uncertainty of the O3 simulated by air quality models. The present study investigates real-time HCHO measurements comparing three Fourier Transform InfraRed spectrometers (FTIRs) and one Quantum Cascade Laser InfraRed spectrometer (QCL-IR) directly sampling from the exhaust of one gasoline passenger car, one Diesel commercial vehicle and one Diesel heavy-duty vehicle, all meeting recent European emission standards (Euro 6/VI). Non-negligible emissions of HCHO were measured from the Diesel light-duty vehicle, with emissions increasing as temperature decreased. R... [more]

Research on the Influence of Moisture Exchange between Oil and Cellulose on the Electrical Parameters of the Insulating Oil in Power Transformers
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cellulose, FDS method, insulation of transformers, mineral oil, moisture, pressboard, transformer diagnostics
The article presents an oil moistening method, identical to the oil moistening in power transformers. Moistening took place through the migration of moisture from the moistened pressboard to the brand new oil. The AC electrical parameters (admittance, phase shift angle, permittivity, loss tangent and conductivity) of the brand new and moistened insulating oil were tested. All measured parameters were found to be affected by the oil moistening. The greatest changes were observed in the loss tangent and conductivity. Moisturization increases the value of tanδ at a frequency of 10−4 Hz from about 20 to about 70. With an increase in frequency to about 400−1000 Hz, a minimum is observed, the position of which depends on the temperature. Its value for moistened oil is about six times lower than for brand new oil. This moisturizing increased the activation energy of the conductivity from 0.466 ± 0.0265 eV to 0.890 ± 0.0115 eV. This is likely due to the acceleration of water molecules diffusio... [more]
