February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO, compression ignition engine, HC emissions, nickel, NOx, platinum catalyst, platinum coating, SEM and EDX images analyses
The monitoring of environmental contamination is an important issue to protect human health and the atmospheric environment. In this study, the optical imaging of mesh structures not coated and coated with platinum was performed to analyze the optical characteristics of the lattices. A nickel monolith catalyst was manufactured via additive manufacturing and coated with platinum, and it was presented to characterize the catalyst properties. The analysis focused on the process of coating using hydrazine bath as a reducing agent. The results showed an increase in the thickness of the coating with baths with durations of 1.5 h, 2.0 h and 2.5 h. The coating thickness was strongly dependent on time duration. The SEM images and EDX were used to confirm the process of coating and analyze the presence of platinum on the catalyst. Coating layers were very thin, and others were not homogeneous over the surface. When the catalyst was exposed to platinum for 2.5 h, the catalyst showed an efficiency... [more]

Hongling Ma, Xinxing Wei, Xilin Shi, Xiaopeng Liang, Weizheng Bai, Lingzhi Ge
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: salt pillar, salt rock, stability, underground energy storage
Underground energy storage is essential for the country’s development, and underground salt cavern groups are a productive way to store energy. Safety pillar design is the key to ensuring the safe operation of large salt cavern gas storage groups. Therefore, this paper is based on the salt pillar stability design problem and analyzes three aspects: (1) Three kinds of pillar stability design theories—reliability theory, strain energy theory, and catastrophe theory; (2) Two methods for designing stable pillars—determining pillars through formulas and numerical simulations; (3) The form and influencing factors of salt pillar instability—macro and microform and the main influential factors. From the current research, the major problem is that the design of safety pillars has not been systematic, due to the differences in salt rock in the region, and the engineering of salt pillar design still relies on experience. Finally, the impact of salt pillar width and gas injection and withdrawal on... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air stoichiometry, impedance, PEMFC, phase angle, temperature, water management
Water management is an important issue for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). The research mainly focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of faults. However, faults harm PEMFC and cause its durability decay, whatever duration they last. This study designs a closed-loop water management system to control the water content in a reasonable range which can not only avoid the faults of hydration and flooding but also improve the performance and durability of PEMFC. The proposed system introduces the measurement methodology based on the phase of single-frequency impedance, which corresponds numerically well with the water content. Moreover, two preferred operating conditions, cathode air stoichiometry and stack temperature, are adopted to regulate the water content with a trade-off between the time cost and power loss. The open-loop characteristics of water content on the temperature and air stoichiometry are studied to design the corresponding control strategy. Findings suggest tha... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: axial turbine, dry fluid, organic Rankine cycle (ORC), partial evaporating organic Rankine cycle (PEORC), wet-to-dry cycle
The organic Rankine cycle (ORC) technology is an efficient way to convert low-grade heat from renewable sources or waste heat for power generation. The partial evaporating organic Rankine cycle (PEORC) can be considered as a promising alternative as it can offer a higher utilization of the heat source. An experimental investigation of a small ORC system used in full or partial evaporation mode is performed. First characterized in superheated mode, which corresponds to standard ORC behavior, a semi-empirical correlative approach involving traditional non-dimensional turbomachinery parameters (specific speed, pressure ratio) can accurately describe one-phase turbine performance. In a second step, two-phase behavior is experimentally investigated. The efficiency loss caused by the two-phase inlet condition is quantified and considered acceptable. The turbine two-phase operation allows for an increase in the amount of recovered heat source. The ability to operate in two phases provides a n... [more]

Keywords: chemical kinetics, geochemistry, hydrocarbon generation potential, Laiyang Formation, Ri-Qing-Wei Basin, source rock
The Ri-Qing-Wei Basin is a newly discovered Late Mesozoic rift basin on the eastern Shandong coast in recent years. Thick, continuous deposited source rocks are found in the Lingshan Island scientific drilling project. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the distribution and hydrocarbon generation potential of source rocks in this area. Organic geochemical experiments were carried out on samples from the core of LK-1 and outcrops in the Lingshan Island, the Laoshan area, and the Jimo Zhougezhuang area to evaluate the maturity, abundance, and type of organic matter in source rocks. The results show that the cumulative thickness of the source rocks in the study area is more than 500 m, and the TOC content is generally greater than 1.0%. The organic matter type is good (mainly type II1 and type II2 kerogen) and the Ro value is more than 2.0. The thermal evolution degree of the organic matter is high with natural gas predominantly generated. We carried out Rock-Eval, PY-GC and gold tube... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery energy storage, control, disturbance rejection, hybrid inverter, photovoltaic generation dispatch
This paper proposes a dispatchable photovoltaic (PV) hybrid inverter for output power tracking without any dependency on the converter’s efficiency and with no power closed loop. The system uses an extra-low-voltage battery energy storage system (BEES) based on a Li-ion battery pack to be applicable for use inside homes and other installations close to the end-user. A bidirectional isolated current-fed dual-active bridge (CF-DAB) converter associated with the batteries provides a wide conversion voltage ratio and ensures safety for the users. The proposed control system shares the DC bus voltage controller between the ac grid interfacing converter (AC-DC) and CF-DAB (DC-DC), eliminating the converter’s efficiency in the reference equations. When dispatchable power is not required, or according to the user’s request, the battery’s charge/discharge current can be specified. A disturbance rejection technique avoids low-frequency current ripple on the battery side. It contributes to the ba... [more]

Keywords: airflow, climatic hazard, electric battery-powered monorails, gas concentration, suspended monorail, underground climatic conditions, underground mine
Transporting materials and mine staff is a vital link necessary to the production process in underground mines. Deteriorating climatic conditions, mainly due to the increasingly deep mining and the usage of machines, force us to look for solutions to improve the underground mine environmental situation. Another essential factor responsible for deteriorating working conditions is harmful substances and exhaust fumes emitted from diesel engines. Supplying the workplaces with air quantity exceeding requirements such as the minimum velocity of air movement or gas and climatic conditions will allow for maintaining the gas concentration at the appropriate level. One possible way to solve the problems mentioned above is to replace suspended monorails powered by internal combustion engines with new solutions of electrically battery-powered monorails. Electric monorails are not yet widely used in mines; nevertheless, they have many advantages. This article analyzes the exhaust gas parameters fr... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: evaluation criteria, evaluation method, Exergy, flue gas condensation, waste heat recovery
Flue gas condensation heat recovery technology has a good technical and economic performance in industrial exhaust gas waste heat recovery. Thermal efficiency analysis is the traditional analysis method for the flue gas condensation heat recovery system but it cannot reflect the recovered heat degree. Exergy analysis, which can reflect the recovered energy heat degree, was first applied to the evaluation of a flue gas condensation waste heat recovery system in this paper. The calculation method of wet flue gas exergy is more complex as both a heat and mass transfer is presented. Flue gas waste heat exergy efficiency (EE) and the flue gas waste heat exergy utilization rate (EUR) were proposed as the evaluation indexes for exergy analysis. The exergy analysis method was applied to the comparative evaluation of three recovery schemes in a practical project. The results show that when the water vapor content of wet flue gas is less than 10%, the condensed water exergy can be neglected when... [more]

With the exploration and development of unconventional oil and gas resources, downhole environmental monitoring and data-analysis technologies are becoming more and more important. Distributed fiber optic measurement technology, as a new monitoring technology to obtain accurate data, has a wide range of applications in hydraulic fracturing and production monitoring. It mainly includes: distributed fiber optic temperature sensors (DTSs) to monitor gas lift, identify in-flow fluid types, interpret flow profiles and monitor production enhancement operations; distributed fiber optic acoustic sensors (DASs) to monitor low frequency strain and microseismic and hydraulic fracturing operations; and distributed fiber optic stress sensors (DSSs) to characterize fractures in the near-well area, which have been well applied in the field. This paper describes the current application status of DASs and DSSs in hydraulic fracturing and production monitoring, respectively, from the principle of distri... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: absorption-compression, COP, Energy, energy use, heat pump, heat transfer, high temperature, waste heat
Utilization of high-temperature energy in industrial production processes is often exhausted by huge low-temperature waste heat without recovery. Thus, energy efficiency is quite limited. Heat pumps are widely used as a high-efficiency waste heat recovery system and are divided into vapor compression cycle, driven by electricity, and absorption type, driven by steam or hot water. However, compression heat pumps are quite difficult to reach more than 100 °C due to the temperature and compression limits of compressors and the working medium. Meanwhile, the COP (coefficient of performance) of an absorption heat pump is quite low due to the thermodynamic cycle characteristics. In order to increase the outlet temperature and COP significantly, a new type of compression-absorption hybrid heat pump cycle is presented and simulated. Compared with traditional cycles, this heat pump can reach the heat sink temperature of 200 °C with a highly satisfactory COP. This heat pump could reach the optim... [more]

Keywords: flow boiling, flow pattern, heat flux, heat transfer coefficient, mass flux, pressure drop, saturation pressure, two-phase flow
This study presents an extensive evaluation of heat transfer characteristics, flow patterns, and pressure drop for saturation pressures ranging from 460−660 kPa in a horizontal smooth tube of 5 mm internal diameter using R134a as the working fluid. The effect of saturation pressures for mass fluxes of 150−300 kg/m2s and heat fluxes of 8.26−23.3 kW/m2 which are typical of refrigeration and air conditioning applications are also investigated. Flow patterns observed during the study are predicted with a well-known flow pattern map of Wojtan et al. The experimental results are compared with seven (7) correlations developed based on different theories to find which correlation best predicts the experimental data. The results show that, at low mass flux, increasing saturation pressure results in an increased heat transfer coefficient. This effect is more pronounced in the low vapor quality region and the dominant mechanism is nucleate boiling. At high mass flux, increasing saturation pressur... [more]

Keywords: contact glow-discharge electrolysis (CGDE), electrolytic solution, Hydrogen, hydrogen production, hydrogen production energy yield, hydrogen production rate, plasma electrolysis, plasma-driven solution electrolysis (PDSE)
This paper reviews the progress in applying the plasma-driven solution electrolysis (PDSE), which is also referred to as the contact glow-discharge electrolysis (CGDE) or plasma electrolysis, for hydrogen production. The physicochemical processes responsible for the formation of PDSE and effects occurring at the discharge electrode in the cathodic and anodic regimes of the PDSE operation are described. The influence of the PDSE process parameters, especially the discharge polarity, magnitude of the applied voltage, type and concentration of the typical electrolytic solutions (K2CO3, Na2CO3, KOH, NaOH, H2SO4), presence of organic additives (CH3OH, C2H5OH, CH3COOH), temperature of the electrolytic solution, the active length and immersion depth of the discharge electrode into the electrolytic solution, on the energy efficiency (%), energy yield (g(H2)/kWh), and hydrogen production rate (g(H2)/h) is presented and discussed. This analysis showed that in the cathodic regime of PDSE, the hyd... [more]

Keywords: ILFN, infrasound and low-frequency noise, wind turbine noise, windshields
Measuring noise from wind turbines is a problematic metrological task due to the significant interference caused by the wind, especially in the low-frequency range. In the audible band, especially A-weighted, the impact of interference from wind is considerably less than in the low-frequency and infrasound bands. In the audible band, especially the A-weighted curve, the impact of interference from wind is significantly less than in the low-frequency and infrasound bands. For this reason, methods are still being sought to reduce interference from wind in the lowest frequency bands effectively. Experimental tests within the scope of the work were carried out using several windshields, with a single standard windscreen at 1.5 m and 4 m height, with an additional microphone shield (tent), and on the board with a double windscreen at a ground level according to IEC 61400-11. Experimental verification of a windshield’s effectiveness and impact under real conditions was carried out using a lo... [more]

Keywords: climate change, decentralised energy system, renewable energy sources, small modular reactors
Climate change is one of the global issues being combatted in recent times. One of the measures is a worldwide cutdown on carbon emissions. This has brought about the rapid development of technologies that can best actualise this goal. The decentralised energy system is designed to harness the strengths of small power-generating sources such as renewable energy sources in a noncentralised manner to help meet the global need for clean energy. Renewable energy sources are faced with the challenge of intermittency, which brings about instability in the grid. Another source of clean energy is nuclear energy, which is traditionally large and not flexible; however, the recent development of technology has resulted in a scaled-down version of the large nuclear plants that are more flexible yet provide clean and stable electricity. This paper explores the possibility of deploying nuclear microreactors in the decentralised energy system and describes the features and the challenges of a decentr... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 3D AUTODYN, explosion, gas cylinder cabinet, gas protective wall, hydrogen gas
In the semiconductor industry, hydrogen is used with many other hazardous and dangerous substances with flammable, toxic, and corrosive properties. In order to safely handle them, convenient-to-use gas cabinets are often required. As known well, hydrogen is highly flammable and explosive, and risk analysis needs to safely use the gas in the cabinets. In this study, overpressure and impact according to various gas cabinet conditions were measured when hydrogen leaks in the gas cabinet, and the effect of overpressure on the protective wall was simulated. For the research, a demonstration experiment was conducted by custom manufacturing a gas cylinder cabinet identical to the standard used in the field, and the protection performance analysis was performed by reverse-engineering it through 3D scanning. As a result of the demonstration experiment, the maximum pressure at the time of hydrogen gas explosion in the gas cylinder cabinet was measured at 0.3 bar. After calculating the detonation... [more]

Keywords: Alternative Fuels, cargo ship, containership, decarbonization, marine fuel, maritime energy, ship design, tanker
Fuel transition can decarbonize shipping and help meet IMO 2050 goals. In this paper, HFO with CCS, LNG with CCS, bio-methanol, biodiesel, hydrogen, ammonia, and electricity were studied using empirical ship design models from a fleet-level perspective and at the Tank-To-Wake level, to assist operators, technology developers, and policy makers. The cargo attainment rate CAR (i.e., cargo that must be displaced due to the low-C propulsion system), the ES (i.e., TTW energy needed per ton*n.m.), the CS (economic cost per ton*n.m.), and the carbon intensity index CII (gCO2 per ton*n.m.) were calculated so that the potential of the various alternatives can be compared quantitatively as a function of different criteria. The sensitivity of CAR towards ship type, fuel type, cargo type, and voyage distance were investigated. All ship types had similar CAR estimates, which implies that considerations concerning fuel transition apply equally to all ships (cargo, containership, tankers). Cargo type... [more]

Keywords: clean technologies, financial development, pollutant emission, renewable energy consumption, Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)
The present study draws motivation from the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with a special focus on SDGs 7 and 13, which highlight the need for access to clean and affordable energy in an environment devoid of emissions; it addresses climate change mitigation in the context of Sub-Saharan Africa. To this end, a carbon-income function setting for Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is constructed. The dynamic relationship between financial development and climate change is evaluated using three indicators and foreign direct investment and carbon dioxide emissions (CO2), while accounting for regulatory institutional quality using a “generalized method of a moment” estimation technique that addresses both heterogeneous cross-sectional issues. Empirical results obtained showed a positive statistical relationship between economic growth and CO2 emissions in SSA at the <0.01 significance level. This suggests that, in SSA, the economic growth path is pollutant emissions driven. This ind... [more]
Review of Recent Offshore Photovoltaics Development

Keywords: fixed pile-based, floating platform, floating thin-film, offshore photovoltaic system, wave-proof
Photovoltaic power generation (PV) has significantly grown in recent years and it is perceived as one of the key strategies to reach carbon neutrality. Due to a low power density, PV requires much space, which may limit PV expansion in the future. Placing PV on water has therefore become an interesting alternative siting solution in several countries. China has the largest fleet of water floating photovoltaic power stations. Water-based PV is typically installed on inland shores, but now offshore areas may become the next step of development. In this paper, the background of offshore photovoltaic power generation and an analysis of existing offshore photovoltaic systems is presented. Fixed pile-based photovoltaic systems are stationary PV systems in offshore or tidal areas characterized by higher safety, but also a higher initial investment. Wave-proof PV systems are highly modular, easier to install, and more practical in countries with high population density and less available land.... [more]

Keywords: inductive power transfer (IPT), microcontrollers, phase-shift control
A wireless battery charger with inductive power transfer (IPT) was proposed in this paper. The commonly used constant-current constant-voltage (CC-CV) charging method is accomplished by a closed-loop controlled IPT with a hybrid resonant circuit on the secondary side. A smooth transition between the CC stage and the CV stage can be made simply by swapping exactly the associated switches on resonant capacitors. The required charging voltage and current are regulated by controlling the phase-shifted angle of the high-frequency inverter on the primary side. To stabilize the charging current and voltage, a closed-loop digital controller was introduced with infrared (IR) transmission feedback. Precise regulation of the resonant inverter on a relative small ranged phase-shifted angle can be realized by two 16-bit microcontroller units (MCUs) with compact encoding and decoding techniques. A hybrid resonant inverter was designed for a 600 W prototype of the proposed IPT battery charger. Experi... [more]

Keywords: flow distribution, header structure, heat pump, maldistribution, microchannel heat exchanger, vertical header
In this study, we investigated the behavior of two-phase flow distribution inside a vertical header of a microchannel heat exchanger (MCHX) that functions as an evaporator of a heat pump system. In general, the two-phase flow distribution behavior of the refrigerant differs depending on the target application, which ranges from small-scale automobile air-conditioners to large-scale building heat pump systems. Particularly, it is reported that the distribution characteristics in the vertical header of the MCHX vary extensively according to the inlet flow conditions of the refrigerant and the physical profile of the header. In this study, the physical configurations (header height, branch tube diameter) of four types of vertical headers were considered. Thereafter, the operating conditions in an experimental device that simulates an MCHX with a vertical header were selected. The experiment was performed under R410A as the working fluid, with a saturation temperature of 15 °C, inlet mass... [more]

Keywords: electric field, entropy generation, hybrid nanofluid, magnetic field, porous medium, radiative heat flux, viscous dissipation
In this study, the entropy formation of an electromagnetohydrodynamic hybrid nanofluid at a stagnation point flow towards a stretched surface in the presence of melting heat transfer, second-order slip, porous medium, viscous dissipation and thermal radiation are investigated. Hybrid nanoparticles alumina (Al2O3) and copper (Cu) are considered, with the base fluid water (H2O). Similarity transformations are used to address the governing partial differential equations (PDEs) that lead to the corresponding ordinary differential equations. The resulting ODEs are solved by employing bvp4c solver numerically in the MATLAB package. The effects of temperature, transport, production of entropy and Bejan number Be are graphically exhibited. Higher radiation parameters R and an electric field E lead to an increase in fluid temperature. The velocity boundary layer is lowered by the magnetic field and porous media parameters. The opposite behaviour is observed in the electric field E. As a result,... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Europe, gas crisis, Liquified Natural Gas, Natural Gas, Qatar, supply shortages
European countries are required to look for alternative gas suppliers to deliver energy security for Europe. Qatar has been proposed to be an alternative gas supplier; however, there are problems that limit Qatar from exporting more gas to Europe, namely: the limited LNG quantities available for export, the long-term fixed contracting strategy, and the lack of room to receive additional gas in European LNG terminals. As these problems are critical and limit Qatar from exporting more gas to Europe, this research aims to propose potential solutions to overcome them. The results show that to solve the issue of the limited LNG quantities available for export, Qatar can produce electricity from renewable sources and export the gas consumed for power production, and can produce renewable natural gas (RNG) from green hydrogen and captured carbon dioxide. Two BCM of natural gas can be exported if 15% of the electricity required is produced from renewables in Qatar. In addition, 0.45 BCM of RNG... [more]
