March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: active power control (APC), demanded power point tracking (DPPT) control, linear quadratic regulator (LQR), multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), wind tunnel testing
In this study, a demanded power point tracking (DPPT) control algorithm was designed for the application of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) modern control algorithms. The proposed DPPT control algorithm has been newly implemented as a multiple reference trajectory method for applying an MIMO control algorithm without mode switches. Dynamic simulations and wind tunnel experiments were performed using a scaled wind turbine to validate the proposed control algorithm. The wind speeds were 4.6 and 7.3 m/s, the average wind speeds corresponding to region 2 and region 3, respectively, with a turbulence intensity of 10%. Both sets of results demonstrated satisfactory performance for tracking the power commands transmitted from the wind farm controller. Furthermore, the proposed control algorithm was compared and validated with a DPPT control algorithm proposed in previous studies, and its improved control performance and validity were confirmed.

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ex situ tests, lignite, UCG, underground coal gasification
Two experimental simulations of underground coal gasification (UCG) processes, using large bulk samples of lignites, were conducted in a surface laboratory setup. Two different lignite samples were used for the oxygen-blown experiments, i.e., “Velenje” meta-lignite (Slovenia) and “Oltenia” ortho-lignite (Romania). The average moisture content of the samples was 31.6wt.% and 45.6wt.% for the Velenje and Oltenia samples, respectively. The main aim of the study was to assess the suitability of the tested lignites for the underground coal gasification process. The gas composition and its production rates, as well as the temperatures in the artificial seams, were continuously monitored during the experiments. The average calorific value of gas produced during the Velenje lignite experiment (6.4 MJ/Nm3) was much higher compared to the result obtained for the experiment with Oltenia lignite (4.8 MJ/Nm3). The Velenje lignite test was also characterized by significantly higher energy efficiency... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery electric vehicle, BEV, consumption shares, cruising range, electric truck, physical model, range prediction, real-world conditions, recuperation, rolling resistance
The further development of electric mobility requires major scientific efforts to obtain reliable data for vehicle and drive development. Practical experience has repeatedly shown that vehicle data sheets do not contain realistic consumption and range figures. Since the fear of low range is a significant obstacle to the acceptance of electric mobility, a reliable database can provide developers with additional insights and create confidence among vehicle users. This study presents a detailed, yet easy-to-implement and modular physical model for both passenger and commercial battery electric vehicles. The model takes consumption-relevant parameters, such as seasonal influences, terrain character, and driving behavior, into account. Without any a posteriori parameter adjustments, an excellent agreement with known field data and other experimental observations is achieved. This validation conveys much credibility to model predictions regarding the real-world impact on energy consumption a... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: multidimensional comparative analysis, non-typical object, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, TOPSIS, VIKOR, VMCM
The development of energy from renewable sources is one of the most important aspects of today’s energy industry. The level of this development (production of green energy) is determined by the use of a variety of methods, e.g., the methods of multicriteria and multivariate analysis. The effectiveness of these methods is affected by many factors, and one of them is the appearance of non-typical objects (outliers). This paper investigates the effectiveness of selected methods (TOPSIS, VIKOR, VMCM) in terms of computational robustness to outlier objects. The most effective method in this respect (VMCM) is then applied to study the level of development of renewable energy sources in European countries. The presented research provides the opportunity to carry out a dynamic analysis (for selected base years) of the level of energy generation from diverse renewable sources in reference to the adopted patterns and anti-patterns (European countries). The obtained results are discussed, thus co... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: AC, DC, efficiency, electric vehicle, nanogrid, protection, solar PV, stability
Future office buildings are expected to be integrated with energy intensive, inherently DC components such as photovoltaic panels (PV), electric vehicles (EV), LED lighting, and battery storage. This paper conceptualizes the interconnection of these components through a 750 V DC nanogrid as against a conventional three-phase 400 V AC system. The factors influencing the performance of a DC-based nanogrid are identified and a comparative analysis with respect to a conventional AC nanogrid is presented in terms of efficiency, stability, and protection. It is proved how the minimization of grid energy exchange through power management is a vital system design choice. Secondly, the trade-off between stability, protection, and cost for sizing of the DC buffer capacitors is explored. The transient system response to different fault conditions for both AC and DC nanogrid is investigated. Finally the differences between the two systems in terms of various safety aspects are highlighted.

Power Enhancement of a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Equipped with an Improved Duct
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DAWT, ducted wind turbine, dynamic stall, H type Darrieus, leading edge vortex, VAWT
Efforts to increase the power output of wind turbines include Diffuser Augmented Wind Turbines (DAWT) or a shroud for the rotor of a wind turbine. The selected duct has three main components: a nozzle, a diffuser, and a flange. The combined effect of these components results in enriched upstream velocity for the rotor installed in the throat of the duct. To obtain the maximum velocity in the throat of the duct, the optimum angles of the three parts have been analyzed. A code was developed to allow all the numerical steps including changing the geometries, generating the meshes, and setting up the numerical solver simultaneously. Finally, the optimum geometry of the duct has been established that allows a doubling of the flow velocity. The flow characteristics inside the duct have also been analyzed in detail. An H-Darrieus Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) has been simulated inside the optimized duct. The results show that the power coefficient of the DAWT can be enhanced up to 2.9 tim... [more]

Evaluation of Subsurface Heat Capacity through Oscillatory Thermal Response Tests
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: borehole thermal resistance, ground-coupled heat pump, heat capacity, oscillatory thermal response test, thermal conductivity, thermal energy
Two methods are currently available to estimate in a relatively short time span the subsurface heat capacity: (1) laboratory analysis of rock/soil samples; (2) measure the heat diffusion with temperature sensors in an observation well. Since the first may not be representative of in-situ conditions, and the second imply economical and logistical issues, a third option might be possible by means of so-called oscillatory thermal response tests (OTRT). The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an OTRT as a tool to infer the subsurface heat capacity without the need of an observation well. To achieve this goal, an OTRT was carried out in a borehole heat exchanger (BHE). The total duration of injection was 6 days, with oscillation period of 12 h and amplitude of 10 W m−1. The results of the proposed methodology were compared 3-D numerical simulations and to a TRT with a constant heat injection rate with temperature response monitored from a nearby observation well. Forecasting Natural Gas Spot Prices with Machine Learning
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: forecasting, Machine Learning, Natural Gas, spot price
The ability to accurately forecast the spot price of natural gas benefits stakeholders and is a valuable tool for all market participants in the competitive gas market. In this paper, we attempt to forecast the natural gas spot price 1, 3, 5, and 10 days ahead using machine learning methods: support vector machines (SVM), regression trees, linear regression, Gaussian process regression (GPR), and ensemble of trees. These models are trained with a set of 21 explanatory variables in a 5-fold cross-validation scheme with 90% of the dataset used for training and the remaining 10% used for testing the out-of-sample generalization ability. The results show that these machine learning methods all have different forecasting accuracy for every time frame when it comes to forecasting natural gas spot prices. However, the bagged trees (belonging to the ensemble of trees method) and the linear SVM models have superior forecasting performance compared to the rest of the models.

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: economic efficiency, electricity costs, PV, renewable energy sources, underground hard coal mining
In Poland, a dynamic increase in the share of renewable energy sources in the national energy mix has been observed in recent years. Until now, these were mainly installations used for the needs of single-family houses and large-scale installations used on the RES auction market. However, due to the fact that the carbon footprint of the offered products is taken into account, this aspect is becoming more and more important. The carbon footprint can be offset by, among others, by covering the energy needs of the industrial plant by its own renewable energy sources. The article analyzes four sample electricity demand profiles of production plants operating in the mining industry, mainly located in Upper Silesia. Using statistical methods, the fitting of potential photovoltaic sources production profiles to the electricity consumption profiles in the analyzed case studies was checked. The analysis was carried out for each hour of the day and for the profiles weighted by the electricity pr... [more]

Keywords: flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS), multilevel inverter (MLI), renewable energy resource (RER), selective harmonic elimination (SHE), space vector control (SVC), total harmonic distortions (THD)
In recent years, multilevel inverters (MLIs) have emerged to be the most empowered power transformation technology for numerous operations such as renewable energy resources (RERs), flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS), electric motor drives, etc. MLI has gained popularity in medium- to high-power operations because of numerous merits such as minimum harmonic contents, less dissipation of power from power electronic switches, and less electromagnetic interference (EMI) at the receiving end. The MLI possesses many essential advantages in comparison to a conventional two-level inverter, such as voltage profile enhancement, increased efficiency of the overall system, the capability of high-quality output generation with the reduced switching frequency, decreased total harmonic distortions (THD) without reducing the power of the inverter and use of very low ratings of the device. Although classical MLIs find their use in various vital key areas, newer MLI configurations have an expandi... [more]

A Novel Tripod Concept for Onshore Wind Turbine Towers
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: structural design, tripod, wind turbine tower
A wind turbine tower assembly is presented, consisting of a lower “tripod section” and an upper tubular steel section, aiming at enabling very tall hub heights for optimum exploitation of the wind potential. The foundation consists of sets of piles connected at their top by a common pile cap below each tripod leg. The concept can be applied for the realization of new or the upgrade of existing wind turbine towers. It is adjustable to both onshore and offshore towers, but emphasis is directed towards overcoming the stricter onshore transportability constraints. For that purpose, pre-welded individual tripod parts are transported and are then bolted together during erection, contrary to fully pre-welded tripods that have been used in offshore towers. Alternative constructional details of the tripod joints are therefore proposed that address the fabrication, transportability, on-site erection and maintenance requirements and can meet structural performance criteria. Optimization of a Thermomagnetic Heat Engine for Harvesting Low Grade Thermal Energy
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy harvesting, gadolinium, low grade thermal energy, magnetocaloric effect, thermomagnetic engine (TME)
Thermomagnetic energy harvesters are one form of technology that can be effectively used to extract energy from low grade heat sources, without causing damage to the environment. In this study, we investigated the output performance of our previously designed thermomagnetic heat engine, which was developed to extract thermal energy by exploiting the magnetocaloric effect of gadolinium. The proposed heat engine uses water as the heat transfer fluid, with heat sources at a temperature in the range 20−65 °C. Although this method turned out to be a promising solution to extract thermal energy, the amount of energy extracted through this geometry of thermomagnetic engine was limited and depends on the interaction between magnetic flux and magnetocaloric material. Therefore, in this paper we carry out an in-depth analysis of the designed thermomagnetic heat engine with an integrated approach of numerical simulation and experimental validation. The computational model improved recognition of... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ANSYS, heat transfer coefficient, insulating glazing, vacuum glazing
In this paper, a prediction method of the heat transfer coefficient of composite vacuum glazing (CVG) is proposed. By analyzing the heat transfer process of CVG, the theoretical calculation formula for the heat transfer coefficient of CVG is established. CVG temperature variation under the test conditions specified in the national standard is simulated using ANSYS. The CVG heat transfer coefficient is calculated by combining the theoretical formula and simulation results. The simulation results are then verified by comparison to a physical experiment. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alternative fuel vehicles, automotive industry, battery electric vehicles, carbon dependability, energy costs, fiscal policies, green energy reliability, public incentives, public interventions
Throughout decades, conflicts related to the access and usage of various energy sources have caused political tensions between nations and confederations of states. Thus, partially to decrease the dependence on fossil fuels, a thorough transition towards renewable energies has been promoted by several regional and national governments as well as by multinational institutions such as the European Union. In this context, the automotive industry has particularly been held responsible for the production of negative externalities, such as global greenhouse gas emissions (GHG emissions), noise and air pollution. To a notable extent, these externalities were caused by vehicles running on fossil fuels such as petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel fuel and fuel oil. Accordingly, it is often argued that replacing vehicles run by internal combustion engines (ICEs) with so-called alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs), particularly with plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs), is crucial to increase t... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy management, process engineering, system energy saving
The effect of the traditional energy saving mode on process engineering is decreasing, so the idea of system energy saving is developing vigorously. This paper summarizes the existing studies on energy saving from three aspects—energy saving technology, energy management, comprehensive evaluation or analysis—and clearly finds that related studies on energy saving have been gradually promoted to promote the development of system energy saving in the whole process engineering process. Among them, the calculation of energy saving brought by energy saving technology is a difficult point in the research. This paper proposes a novel calculation method of energy saving by taking the iron and steel production process (ISPP) as an example. Enhancement of the Flickermeter for Grid-Connected Wind Turbines
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: IEC standard, voltage flicker, voltage fluctuation, wind turbine
Distributed generators connected to the power system usually produce voltage fluctuations. For wind turbines connected to a grid, large changes in wind speed can cause voltage flicker at the point of common coupling. The measurement of voltage flicker caused only by wind turbines is difficult. The wind turbine under test is usually connected to a medium voltage point, in which other fluctuating loads may produce significant voltage disturbances at the wind turbine terminal where the measurement is made. Although the IEC 61400-21-1 standard specifies a method to evaluate voltage flicker caused by wind turbines, because of the complex algorithm and process of the IEC standard, there is currently a lack of measurement equipment that meets the IEC standard. In addition, some countries that use other voltage flicker standards, such as ΔV10, do not have suitable flicker measurements for wind turbines. Therefore, this study proposes an enhanced version of the IEC 61400-21-1 standard, which in... [more]
