Star Wars? Space Weather and Electricity Market: Evidence from China
Tong Wu, Zhe You, Mengqi Gong, Jinhua Cheng
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coal consumption, electricity sales, geomagnetic, power demand, solar wind, space weather
This paper aims to investigate the impact of space weather on China’s electricity market. Based on data products provided by NOAA and the National Energy Administration in China, this paper uses solar wind velocity as a solar weather indicator and the disturbance storm time index as a magnetospheric weather indicator to match monthly Chinese electricity market data over 10 years. Based on a VAR model, we found that (1) space weather increases the demand for electricity in China, and solar wind speed and the geomagnetic index increase the electricity consumption of the whole of Chinese society, as space weather mainly increases the electricity consumption of the secondary and industrial sectors. (2) The geomagnetic index significantly promotes power station revenue. (3) Space weather is associated with increased energy consumption. The geomagnetic index significantly increases the coal consumption rate of fossil power plants in China, but the solar wind speed has nothing to do with the... [more]

Ningjian Peng, Enhua Wang, Hongguang Zhang
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: efficiency improvement, mean-line model, multi-stage axial turbine, small-scale orc, trailing edge thickness
A small-scale organic Rankine cycle (ORC) with kW-class power output has a wide application prospect in industrial low-grade energy utilization. Increasing the expansion pressure ratio of small-scale ORC is an effective approach to improve the energy efficiency. However, there is a lack of suitable expander for small-scale ORC that can operate with a high efficiency under the condition of large expansion pressure ratio and small mass flow rate. Aiming at the design of high-efficiency axial-flow turbine in small ORC system, this paper investigates the performance of a kW-class axial-flow turbine and proposes a method for efficiency improvement. First, the preliminary design of an axial-flow turbine is conducted to optimize the geometric parameters and aerodynamic parameters. Then, the effects of tip clearance and trailing edge thickness on turbine performance are analyzed under design and off-design conditions. The results show that the efficiency of the two-stage or three-stage turbine... [more]
Factors Affecting the Adoption of Photovoltaic Systems in Rural Areas of Poland
Marek Angowski, Tomasz Kijek, Marcin Lipowski, Ilona Bondos
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: consumer behaviour, consumer innovativeness, economic value, PV systems, renewable energy resources, rural areas
The paper aims to identify and explain the factors influencing the decision-making process on the behavioural intention to use home photovoltaic systems by Polish households and potential buyers. The survey was conducted in 2021 on a sample of 521 participants. The research used a random sample of households without PV systems located in the rural areas in Poland, where the adoption of innovative technologies related to obtaining energy from renewable sources is especially important. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was applied to measure structural relationships. The main finding indicates that consumer innovativeness has the strongest impact on the intention to purchase a photovoltaic installation. The perceived value also affects the intention to purchase a photovoltaic installation. The perceived value is affected by perceived economic benefits and indirectly by the subjective knowledge of PV. Surprisingly, environmental concerns negatively affect the intention to use PV install... [more]
The Power of Co-Creation in the Energy Transition—DART Model in Citizen Energy Communities Projects

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: citizen energy community, co-creation, DART model, housing cooperative, value co-creation
Successful energy transformation is interconnected with greater citizenry participation as prosumers. The search for novel solutions to implement the transition to renewable energy that will neutralize the barriers to this process, e.g., the reluctance of citizens to get involved, lack of trust in decision-makers and lack of co-ownership of energy projects, is inevitable as a part of the bottom-up process. Energy communities have vast potential to scale up Renewable Energy projects. Due to the fact that in Poland, establishing citizen energy communities in the cities is not allowed, the key success factor of energy transformation is to engage housing cooperatives and other housing communities in this process. A similar legal framework prevents communities from establishing themselves in the Czech Republic and Hungary. The research problem of this paper is to identify determinants of the co-creation process in Renewable Energy project activation at the housing cooperative level. The aim... [more]

Longxing Wu, Kai Liu, Hui Pang, Jiamin Jin
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: lithium-ion batteries, proportional–integral observer, sensor bias, simplified electrochemical model, state of charge
State of Charge (SOC) is essential for a smart Battery Management System (BMS). Traditional SOC estimation methods of lithium-ion batteries are usually conducted using battery equivalent circuit models (ECMs) and the impact of current sensor bias on SOC estimation is rarely considered. For this reason, this paper proposes an online SOC estimation based on a simplified electrochemical model (EM) for lithium-ion batteries considering sensor bias. In EM-based SOC estimation structure, the errors from the current sensor bias are addressed by proportional−integral observer. Then, the accuracy of the proposed EM-based SOC estimation is validated under different operating conditions. The results indicate that the proposed method has good performance and high accuracy in SOC estimation for lithium-ion batteries, which facilitates the on-board application in advanced BMS.

Keywords: all-electric ship, battery energy storage system (BESS), DC shipboard power system, integrated power system (IPS), pure electric propulsion ship, shipboard microgrid
With the strengthening of international environmental regulations, many studies on the integrated electric propulsion systems applicable to eco-friendly ship are being conducted. However, few studies have been performed to establish a guide line for the overall pure electric propulsion ship design. Therefore, this paper introduces the comprehensive design of DC shipboard power system for pure electric propulsion ship based on battery energy storage system (BESS). To design and configure the pure electric propulsion ship, 2 MW propulsion car ferry was assumed and adopted to be the target vessel in this paper. In order to design the overall system, a series of design processes, such as the decision of the ship operation profile, BESS capacity selection, configuration of the power conversion systems for propulsion, battery charging/discharging procedures, classification of system operation modes, and analysis of the efficiency, were considered. The proposed efficient design and analysis o... [more]

Keywords: Biofuels, Chlorella sp., Cyanobacteria, growth, physiological activity, Salix viminalis L., torrefaction
The effect of foliar application of Cyanobacteria and Chlorella sp. monocultures on physiological activity, element composition, development and biomass weight of basket willow (Salix viminalis L.) and the possibility to prepare biofuel from it in the fortification process was studied. Triple foliar plant spraying with non-sonicated monocultures of Cyanobacteria (Anabaena sp. PCC 7120, Microcystis aeruginosa MKR 0105) and Chlorella sp. exhibited a considerably progressive impact on metabolic activity and development of plants. This biofertilization increased cytomembrane impermeability, the amount of chlorophyll in plants, photosynthesis productivity and transpiration, as well as degree of stomatal opening associated with a decreased concentration of intercellular CO2, in comparison to control (treatments with water, Bio-Algeen S90 or with environmental sample). The applied strains markedly increased the element content (N, P, K) in shoots and the productivity of crucial growth enzymes... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dimensional analysis, Energy Efficiency, flow rate regulation, pump systems
This paper presents a method for evaluating the energy efficiency of pump systems used to transport fluids .It is mainly scientifically applied and engineering-applied in nature and aims to propose a new approach (method) to researchers in their study of the energy efficiency of such systems. By applying the well-known scientific method of Dimensional Analysis (Buckingham π-theorem), dimensionless complexes (π-criterions and their relevant equations, which are original (innovative) and are offered for the first time in the scientific literature), used in accomplishing an energy assessment and analysis of such systems, are obtained. The criterion ∏1 = ev/ρgD represents specific energy consumption in kWh/m3 for a given pipe system with an exemplary diameter D. The criterion ∏2 = Q/[n(Hp − Hst)D2] represents a generalized parameter which is characterized by the selected method of flow rate (Q) regulation for a pump system with given static head Hst—by changing the speed of rotation (VFD,... Effect of Adding Emulsifier to Fuel on Work Efficiency and Gas Turbine Emissions
Paweł Niszczota, Marian Gieras
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Alternative Fuels, CO emission, emulsifier, emulsion fuels, gas turbine, NOx emission, surfactant
In an effort to reduce the emissivity of transport and energy, numerous studies are being carried out on the impact of the combustion of alternative fuels on the emission and operating parameters of propulsion and energy units. One of the observed trends is the use of emulsion fuels. The addition of an emulsifier to an emulsion fuel reduces the interfacial tension between two liquids, which allows obtaining an emulsion fuel with the expected stability. The research conducted on self-ignition engines and gas turbines (TG) does not give an unambiguous answer as to the influence of the use of fuel-water emulsion on CO emissions. One of the reasons for the discrepancy in the obtained results may be the type and amount of the emulsifier used in the emulsion fuel. Tests were carried out on the GTM-120 gas turbine to compare the operating parameters and emissions between the cases in which TG was supplied with three fuel mixtures—the standard fuel for TG (DF) and DF with 2% and 5% emulsifier... Keywords: electromagnetic transient analysis, ground-return admittance, ground-return impedance, lightning, transmission lines
This paper evaluates the influence of frequency-dependent soil conductivity and permittivity in the transient responses of single- and double-circuit transmission lines including the ground wires subjected to lightning strikes. We use Nakagawa’s approach to compute the ground-return impedance and admittance matrices where the frequency-dependent soil is modeled using Alípio and Visacro’s model. We compare some elements of these matrices with those calculated by Carson’s approach which assumes the frequency constant. Results show that a significant difference can be obtained in high resistive soils for these elements in impedance and admittance matrices. Then, we compute the transient responses for single- and double-circuit lines with ground wires located above soils of 500, 1000, 5000, and 10,000 Ω·m considering the frequency constant and frequency-dependent parameters generated for two lightning strikes (subsequent stroke and Gaussian pulse). We demonstrate that the inclusion of freq... [more]

Following electrification of automotive transport, studies on the penetration of electric vehicles (EVs) are widespread, especially in defined contexts. As major transport hubs, airports fall within contexts worthy of interest. In this work, a forecast of the demand for electric mobility in an Italian international airport (Rome−Fiumicino) is presented. The main goal of the research is to build up a methodology that allows evaluating the penetration index of EVs that will access the airport parks in 2025 and 2030, to be able to have a preliminary assessment of the number of charging points necessary for serving them. In the paper, first, a wide review of proposed scenarios on the penetration of EVs at international and national level and available data on local automotive transport are presented, as a preliminary study for the definition of reference scenarios for the local context. Then, the proposed methodology is presented and applied to the specific case study. Finally, a prelimina... [more]
Combination of b-Fuels and e-Fuels—A Technological Feasibility Study

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biomass, catalytic methanation, gasification, power-to-gas, synthetic natural gas
The energy supply in Austria is significantly based on fossil natural gas. Due to the necessary decarbonization of the heat and energy sector, a switch to a green substitute is necessary to limit CO2 emissions. Especially innovative concepts such as power-to-gas establish the connection between the storage of volatile renewable energy and its conversion into green gases. In this paper, different methanation strategies are applied on syngas from biomass gasification. The investigated syngas compositions range from traditional steam gasification, sorption-enhanced reforming to the innovative CO2 gasification. As the producer gases show different compositions regarding the H2/COx ratio, three possible methanation strategies (direct, sub-stoichiometric and over-stoichiometric methanation) are defined and assessed with technological evaluation tools for possible future large-scale set-ups consisting of a gasification, an electrolysis and a methanation unit. Due to its relative high share of... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ad hoc text mining, data wrangling, DC fast charging, descriptive analytics, EV charging cost, level 2 charging, spatial variation
Electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure is present all over the United States, but charging prices vary greatly, both in amount and in the methods by which they are assessed. For this paper, we interpret and analyze charging price information from PlugShare, a crowd-sourced EV charging data platform. Because prices in these data exist in a semi-structured textual format, an ad hoc text mining approach is used to extract quantitative price information. Descriptive analytics of the processed dataset demonstrate how the prices of EV charging vary with charging level (Direct Current Fast Charging versus Level 2), geographic location, network provider, and location type. Our research indicates that a great deal of diversity and flexibility exists in structuring the prices of EV charging to enable incentives for shaping charging behaviors, but that it has yet to be widely standardized or utilized. Comparisons with estimates of the levelized cost of EV charging illustrate some of the ch... [more]

Keywords: line commutated rectifier, liquefied natural gas plants, phase control, sub-synchronous damper converter
In electrified liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants variable frequency drives (VFDs) interact with turbine-generator (TG) units creating torsional vibrations known as sub-synchronous torsional interactions (SSTIs). Torsional vibrations can be dangerous for an LNG plant when they involve torsional instability. The stability of an LNG plant depends on the plant configuration and on the number of TG units and of VFDs. In such peculiar configurations stability cannot be achieved acting of the VFDs control system. Alternatively, dedicated equipment is needed to damp the torsional vibrations. In this paper, a sub-synchronous damper (SSD) converter is used to mitigate the SSTI phenomena. The SSD converter consists of a thyristor H-bridge regulating the phase of the additional torque provided at the TG unit air-gap. A phase control system is proposed and is based on the torsional torque oscillations measurement. An adaptive reference signal is employed, also guaranteeing high performance in isla... [more]

Keywords: grid-connected photovoltaic system, low voltage ride through, transient active power, voltage sags
Due to a limitation in the magnitude of the three-phase output inverter currents, the output active power of the photovoltaic (PV) unit has been de-rated during low voltage ride through, which brings great instability risk to the power system. With the increase in the penetration rate of new energy, the impact of the power shortage on the system transient stability increases. It is of great significance to analyze the impact of this transient power shortage on system stability. This article explores methods to improve the active power output capability of photovoltaic units during low-breakthrough periods. A transient simulation model of a grid-connected PV generator with low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) capability is presented, under the condition of meeting the overcurrent capacity of the PV inverter and the requirement of dynamic reactive power support supplied by the PV generator specified in the China grid codes (GB/T 19964-2012) during grid fault. An example system with high PV pe... [more]

Keywords: 100% RE, cost optimization, HVDC grid expansion, linear modelling, Paris Agreement, sector coupling, wind power
To be able to fulfil the Paris Climate Agreement and keep global warming with reasonable confidence at a maximum of 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels, Germany must set an end to all greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. At the core of this task is the switch to 100% renewables across all sectors on the same time horizon. Conventional technologies fueled by fossil and nuclear energies are, according to the vast majority of current cost calculations, energetically inefficient, too expensive, and too slow in expansion to be able to deliver a substantial contribution to rapid climate protection. We present the first comprehensive energy scenario that shows the way to 100% renewable energy for all energy sectors by 2030. The result of the calculations is a cost-effective energy system that is compatible with the German share of necessary greenhouse gas reduction. This study shows a target system of generation, conversion, and storage technologies that can achieve the transformation to 100% ren... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: critical capture velocity, fly ash, incident angle, normal restitution coefficient, particle impact
In this paper, the rebound characteristics of coal ash particles impacting on a stainless steel surface are studied experimentally with the background of ash deposition on the heating surface of the boiler. The impact processes of coal ash particles with different incident angles were recorded by high-speed digital camera technology. The evolution of the normal restitution coefficient with incident normal velocity was obtained. Three different static contact theories are used to establish the equations of motion to predict the critical capture velocity of particles. The results show that the normal restitution coefficient first increases and then decreases with the increase of incident normal velocity. The critical capture velocity of particles under the three models was predicted. It is found that the prediction results of the Brach and Dunn (BD) model for the critical capture velocity are close to the experimental results. Taking the particle of size 23 μm as an example, the maximum... [more]

Quanying Yao, Bo Yang, Qin Zhang
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DUCG, oil and gas reservoir exploration, shale-gas, sweet-spot evaluation
Shale-gas sweet-spot evaluation as a critical part of shale-gas exploration and development has always been the focus of experts and scholars in the unconventional oil and gas field. After comprehensively considering geological, engineering, and economic factors affecting the evaluation of shale-gas sweet spots, a dynamic uncertainty causality graph (DUCG) is applied for the first time to shale-gas sweet-spot evaluation. A graphical modeling scheme is presented to reduce the difficulty in model construction. The evaluation model is based on expert knowledge and does not depend on data. Through rigorous and efficient reasoning, it guarantees exact and efficient diagnostic reasoning in the case of incomplete information. Multiple conditional events and weighted graphs are proposed for specific problems in shale-gas sweet-spot evaluation, which is an extension of the DUCG that defines only one conditional event for different weighted function events and relies only on the experience of a... Keywords: bioenergy, energy system model, energy systems analysis, energy transition, power demand, renewable energy potentials
The pressure on the energy sector to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is increasing. In the light of current greenhouse gas emissions in the energy sector, further expansion of renewable energy sources (RES) is inevitable to reduce emissions and reach the climate goals. This study aims at investigating structural characteristics of German counties regarding advantages for self-sufficient power systems based on RES. The modelling of the power sector based on RES is coupled with a cluster analysis in order to draw a large-scale conclusion on structural characteristics beneficial or obstructive for municipal energy systems. Ten clusters are identified with the Ward algorithm in a hierarchical-agglomerative method. The results underline a further need for RES expansion projects in order to close the gap between supply and demand. Only then, bioenergy can effectively balance the offset and support a truly self-sufficient local energy system. While the model results indicate that the majority... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy transition, Indonesia, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, renewable energies, transformation to sustainability
Indonesia is an interesting case study for researchers, educators and students of sustainable development and sustainable energy due to its ability to connect the multiple “worlds” it has become part of. Indonesia is an important bridge to Muslim countries, the voice of the Global South in the G20 and a main pillar of the 134-country-strong G77. Indonesia’s development trajectory is also key to the achievement of the Paris Climate Agreement as well as of the 2030 Agenda. This article proposes that one way to understand Indonesia’s complex energy transition is by knowing how to teach it as a case study. By teaching how Indonesia addresses contradictions that would have been unsurmountable for other countries, new insights and values can be gained. Indonesia’s energy transition offers helpful lessons, because of its aspiration to become a developed country by 2045. However, as the methodology of this paper suggests, these lessons can be more valuable when they are achieved through the st... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic load pressure, multiple-seam, pillar collapse, room pillar, strata movement, undermining
Numerous room-and-pillar mining goaf are apparent in western China due to increasing small coal mining activities, which causes the collapse of the overlying coal pillars and the occurrence of strong ground pressure on the longwall face and surface subsidence. In this study, Yuanbao Bay Coal Mine, Shuozhou, Shanxi, was selected to study the collapse of the overlying coal pillars on the longwall face and reveal the mechanism of the pillar collapse and the disaster-causing mechanism caused by strong ground pressure. Results show that the dynamic collapse process of coal pillars is relatively complicated. First, the coal pillars on both sides of the goaf are destroyed and destabilized, followed by the adjacent coal pillars, which eventually cause a large-scale collapse of the coal pillars. This results in a large-scale cut-off movement of the overlying strata, and the large impact load that acts on the longwall face causes an unmovable longwall face support. Moreover, the roof weighting i... [more]

Keywords: fuzzy logic, heuristics, Markov chains, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar energy, solar power forecasting
Solar energy is an economic and clean power source subject to natural variability, while energy storage might attenuate it, ultimately, effective and operationally feasible forecasting techniques for energy management are needed for better grid integration. This work presents a novel deterministic forecast method considering: irradiance pattern classification, Markov chains, fuzzy logic and an operational approach. The method developed was applied in a rolling manner for six years to a target location with no prior data to assess performance and its changes as new local data becomes available. Clearness index, diffuse fraction and irradiance hourly forecasts are analyzed on a yearly basis but also for 20 day types, and compared against smart persistence. Results show the proposed method outperforms smart persistence by ~10% for clearness index and diffuse fraction on the base case, but there are significant differences across the 20 day types analyzed, reaching up to +60% for clear day... Keywords: convective heat transfer, experimental investigation, nanofluids
In this study, several experimental investigations on the effects of nanofluids on the convective heat transfer coefficient in laminar and turbulent conditions were analyzed. The aim of this work is to provide an overview of the thermal performance achieved with the use of nanofluids in various experimental systems. This review covers both forced and natural convection phenomena, with a focus on the different experimental setups used to carry out the experimental campaigns. When possible, a comparison was performed between different experimental campaigns to provide an analysis of the possible common points and differences. A significant increase in the convective heat transfer coefficient was found by using nanofluids instead of traditional heat transfer fluids, in general, even with big data dispersion from one case to another that depended on boundary conditions and the particular experimental setup. In particular, a general trend shows that once a critic value of the Reynolds numbe... [more]
